Malaysiana - Lost in Direction

sarawak bumis so subtly they carry the tag
with them i dont even feel deprivileged among them
definitely not as an affronts this tag for them

peninsula bumis everywhere i go the glaring
overstatement of a status that makes a society
unsettled, even lost in direction at times

sarawak bumis every other race they view
as opportunities to reap talking to them with
a sincerity and friendship no words can muster
you can even call them a family

peninsula bumis every other race some sort
of a threat, and when they talk, talk to them with
a kris dangled between their words

sarawak bumis they see a destiny clearly
beyond the horizon of friendship
the other, a clouded vision marred
by a metastasis of biases and insecurities
i pray the cancer will not spread

(the third stanza can also be written thus)

sarawak bumis every other race they view
as opportunities that only friendship can earn
they speak to them with a sincerity
no words can muster
you can even call them a family

Down the Memory lane

You're a learned soul that I admire at all,
In my school days I had a pen-friend a girl from Sarawak, Malaysia
Her name is Punithawathy an Indian origin if I am not mistaken and when I came to Sarawak once on a ship.
I was forty then, little aggressive
I want to see her but I have lost her address.
So no more, life's a dream day by day soulship reaches to the place called 'Anchorage' close to a certain Port,
And then you dropp your Anchor and lay up!
No voyages hereafter!

Pantun - Arus deras sungei Klang setelah hujan lebat (translated to English)

arus deras setelah hujan lebat
cepat ubah wajahnya sungei klang
bagai kuala lumpur di susuli ekonomi pesat
dulu pekerja ladang skrang towkay kilang

the water is treacherous after the rain
the klang river is fast to change her image
like kuala lumpur after the fast economic progress
those farmers some are now factory owners

arus deras sungei klang setelah hujan lebat
bagai kuala lumpur di susuli ekonomi hebat
bangunan tingi lambang pembagunan pesat
ibu kota yang mulai dari lumpur ke suatu pusat

river klang is choppy after a bout of rain
like kuala lumpur after its economic growth
high buildings are signs of development
the city that grows from a mud estuary to an important centre

War Within

Kadang kita harus menunggu dengan tenang
Kadang kita harus segera menyerang
Kadang kita harus mencari celah untuk menang
Kadang kita tak boleh lengah dan tetap menerjang
Kadang kita lembut dan bergerak seperti bayang
Kadang kita ganas bagai hewan garang
Kadang itu akan membuat kita dikenang
Kadang itu hanyalah sebuah kekonyolan perang

Malaysiana - Rejang River

POETRY IN PROGRESS

I never knew you are a giant
until i went around the country
i saw the Klang and Gombak rivers
in Kuala Lumpur and and were surprised
to learn that they even called them rivers
arent them really just little rivers or streams?
the ones we put pavements over at the old market in Sibu
malaysians should see the Sarawak and Rejang Rivers
to know what Sarawakians mean by rivers
that would be a real integration of
geographical standads and how we see things

when after a rain and the sun begins to set,
a walk at the Rejang Esplanade does feel like
on a beach, the water lapping and splashing
the cool and fresh air revitalising the lungs and body
at sweet and pulpy pineapple town Sarikei
and sugary green orange town Bintangor
and at Kerto where vases and colourful pottery
are moulded out of the Rejang quality clay

Impian

Rudyard Kipling

The Lost Legion

There's a Legion that never was 'listed,
That carries no colours or crest,
But, split in a thousand detachments,
Is breaking the road for the rest.
Our fathers they left us their blessing --
They taught us, and groomed us, and crammed;
But we've shaken the Clubs and the Messes
To go and find out and be damned
(Dear boys!),
To go and get shot and be damned.

So some of us chivy the slaver,
And some of us cherish the black,
And some of us hunt on the Oil Coast,
And some on -- the Wallaby track:
And some of us drift to Sarawak,
And some of us drift up The Fly,
And some share our tucker with tigers,
And some with the gentle Masai
(Dear boys!),
Take tea with the giddy Masai.

We've painted The Islands vermilion,
We've pearled on half-shares in the Bay,
We've shouted on seven-ounce nuggets,
We've starved on a Seedeeboy's pay;
We've laughed at the world as we found it --
Its women and cities and men --
From Sayyid Burgash in a tantrum
To the smoke-reddened eyes of Loben
(Dear boys!),
We've a little account with Loben.

The ends o' the Earth were our portion,
The ocean at large was our share.
There was never a skirmish to windward
But the Leaderless Legion was there:
Yes, somehow and somewhere and always
We were first when the trouble began,
From a lottery-row in Manila,
To an I.D.B. race on the Pan
(Dear boys!),
With the Mounted Police on the Pan.

We preach in advance of the Army,
We skirmish ahead of the Church,
With never a gunboat to help us
When we're scuppered and left in the lurch.
But we know as the cartridges finish,
And we're filed on our last little shelves,
That the Legion that never was 'listed
Will send us as good as ourselves
(Good men!),
Five hundred as good as ourselves.

Then a health (we must drink it in whispers)
To our wholly unauthorised horde --
To the line of our dusty foreloopers,
The Gentlemen Rovers abroad --
Yes, a health to ourselves ere we scatter,
For the steamer won't wait for the train,
And the Legion that never was 'listed
Goes back into quarters again!
'Regards!
Goes back under canvas again.
Hurrah!
The swag and the billy again.
Here's how!
The trail and the packhorse again.
Salue!
The trek and the laager again.

Basta't Kasama Kita (w/english - 'As Long As You're With Me'-)

Basta't kasama kita
kahit ulam natin
ay tuyo at talong
sa mundo
ako'y ngingiti.

Basta't kasama kita
maglakad man sa baha
sa gabing madilim
sa buwan
ako'y ngingiti.

Basta't kasama kita
kahit maghapon kang
hindi kikibo
sa iyo
ako'y ngingiti.

Basta't kasama kita
asahan mo
ako'y ngingiti.

english translation
-As Long As You're With Me-

As long as you're with me
even if we only have dried fish
and eggplant for our meal
I will smile to the world.

As long as you're with me
even if we walk in the flood
in the dark night
I will smile to the moon.

As long as you're with me
even if you don't speak any words
the whole day long
I will smile to you.

As long as you're with me
surely,
I will smile.

Kahit Kailan

Nagtatanong ang isip
Di raw maintindihan
Kung anong nararamdaman
Dapat mong malaman
Sa puso ko'y ikaw lamang
Ang nag iisa...

Pangangamba
Dapat bang isipin
Walang hanggan
Asahan mo na...

Kahit kailan
Di kita iiwan
Kahit kailan
Di kita pababayaan
Kahit kailan
Kahit kailan...

Bulong ng yung damdamin
Pagibig na walang hanggan
Ang siyang nais kong makamtan
Ngayon ay narito ako
Handang umibig sa iyo
Na walang katapusan...

Pangangamba
Dapat bang isipin?
Walang hanggan
Asahan mo na...

Kahit kailan
Di kita iiwan
Kahit kailan
Di kita pababayaan
Kahit kailan
Kahit kailan...

Kung ikaw ay mawala sa piling ko
Di na alam kung kakayanin pa kayang
Umibig pang muli
Kahit na ano pang mangyayari
Di maaring ipag-balik
Sasamahan pa kita
Hanggang sa huli.......

Kahit kailan
Di kita iiwan
Kahit kailan
Di kita pababayaan
Kahit kailan
Di magbabago
Kahit kailan
Kahit kailan...
