Japanese naval officers in dress whites are frequent guests at Pearl Harbor's officers' mess and are very polite. They always were. Except, of course, for that little interval there between 1941 and 1945.

But in 1941, on December 8th, after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, my mother bought a radio and we listened to the war news. We'd not had a radio up to that time. I was born in 1934, so I was seven years of age.

The Navy has changed a great deal. Not that the officers of my day were bad, because I served under a lot of good officers, believe me. But there were a few bad ones, too.

In a completely integrated unit where you'd have white soldiers, particularly from southern states, serving under black noncommissioned officers or officers... I think you would have a problem definitely.

When you have police officers who abuse citizens, you erode public confidence in law enforcement. That makes the job of good police officers unsafe.

Dharma Chakra
What Buddha set in motion,
The Wheel of Dharma
Was already, always in motion.
We used to discuss, with scorn,
The retired officers charging fee
To procure a meeting with us.
Now after retirement while
Doing consultancy, we charge
A higher fee for meeting officers!
I do feel sorry that I thought ill
Of them then, and so now if others
In the chair think ill of me, let them.
The circle will complete for everyone:
Only there is a season for everything,
As laid down in the Ecclesiastes.

Too often we act - ask our schools to be truant officers, our teachers to be truant officers, because we're giving them children who have, you know, they're not ready to learn. And if they're not ready to learn by the third grade, they know they're behind.

Unfortunately I put the opening date on the 5th of December 1941 and on the 7th of December the Japanese bombarded Pearl Harbour. My dream of a theater in Washington D.C. came to a prompt end.

Samurai Competition
The steel blade of the sword flashed in the bright sunshine.
Second Lieutenant Toshiaki Mukai clutched the handle in both hands.
He raised the weapon high towards the sky and took a deep breath.
And then, with a powerful strike,
He slashed the head of the young Chinese man kneeling before him.
He smiled.
Did Second Lieutenant Tsuyoshi Noda win or lose?
On route to Nanjing, the two officers
Of the Japanese Imperial Army were
Competing with each other for being the first
To behead 100 people.
The competition was not a war crime, they said,
But in the Samurai spirit of kiri sute gomen,
The ancient feudal era custom
That authorized the Samurai to execute by sword anyone
From the lower classes who compromised the warrior’s honor.
The Japanese media liked the idea of the beheading contest.
Newspapers celebrated it with enthusiastic reports.
They explained that cutting heads strengthened military character,
Increased patriotism and public support, as well as army moral.
The Tokyo Nichi-Nichi Shimbun covered the contest
Of cutting 100 heads with a series of articles.
“Incredible Record”, announced the newspaper
In its December 13,1937 headline:
“Mukai beheaded 106, Noda 105”.
The Tokyo paper also claimed that the two officers decided
To start another competition with the aim being 150 severed heads.
During the Fascist invasion of China and in World War II
Soldiers of the Japanese Imperial Army treated people
In the occupied territories as inferior lower classes and slaves.
Beheading by sword became a common war crime in the Asian theatre.
Yet Japanese officers saw it not only as an antidote to faintheartedness
But as a grand act of heroism.
By the end of the Second World War an estimated four million soldiers
And perhaps up to sixteen million civilians lost their lives in China.

When reflecting upon it today, that the Pearl Harbor attack should have succeeded in achieving surprise seems a blessing from Heaven. It was clear that a great American fleet had been concentrated in Pearl Harbor, and we supposed that the state of alert would be very high.

Secular Pope
The secular Pope
Cuba 1957, Havana was full of randy tourists,
prostitutes, gambling casinos and assassins.
Castro was still up his mountain stronghold,
when a robber came onboard our ship;
he was caught on the wooden dock by two
police officers, who pocketed his loot.
He was told to run away and then they shot
him dead…five bullets in his back.
Young red blood dripped into turquoise sea.
The officers laughed holstered guns and lit
Marlboro cigarettes. But Fidel Castro was on
his way down from the mountain and Cuba
would get her dignity back.

The Protectors
police officers and firefighters
deserve an applause
at times they are fighting a loosing cause.
they fight this battle every day
and they do it for little pay.
they risk their lives for you and me
so that we live our lives carefree.
they take away our stress and strains
and have so little to gain.
a little smile, a friendly thank you
for all the things that they do.
walking the streets, or in their cars
always close, never far.
how many of us can say
that into a burning building
we would stay
to save the lives of others
who we do not know.
perishing in a fire
is not the way to go.
police officers stopping
the crimes in the streets
as they patrol their scheduled beat.
going into a house with family abuse
wondering if it'll be of any use.
let us give thanks to all who serve.
including the medical fields
without their concerns
we would not heal.
we thank you from the bottom
of our hearts
for you have become
a very big part.
THANK YOU

On The Civil War On The East Coast Of The United States Of North America 1860-64
Because of the unaccountable spirit of the troops
oh we were marched as we were never marched before
and flanked them off from home. Stupid Meade
was after them, head on to tail, but we convinced
him, finally, to flank, flank, cut off their head.
He finally understood, the idiot, and got a fort
named after him, for wisdom. He probably thought
Lee would conquer Washington from Appomattox
if he, Meade, should march his infantry behind
him, Lee. Ah well, the unaccountable spirit of the troops
triumphed, Meade got his fort, Grant got his presidency,
Sherman got his motto, what was it? War is heck?, Lee got a military school
for the education of young Southern gentlemen, and the Union
Army was taken over by Southern noncommissioned officers
in the wars against the Indians to the west. I know all
about this, I know who won, I served under them
for three hundred and fifty years in World War II,
just long enough not to be called a rookie but a veteran,
and realized the rank and order of my enemies:
first, the West Point officers; second, the red-neck sergeants;
third, the Nazis and perhaps the Japanese. I won
all of these wars as a private soldier, for a while,
and am happy to have done so: without me
Hitler and Hirohito would he ruling the world
instead of America and Russia, but I still will not
drive through Georgia with New York license plates.
