The Navy has changed a great deal. Not that the officers of my day were bad, because I served under a lot of good officers, believe me. But there were a few bad ones, too.

Japanese naval officers in dress whites are frequent guests at Pearl Harbor's officers' mess and are very polite. They always were. Except, of course, for that little interval there between 1941 and 1945.

Dharma Chakra

What Buddha set in motion,
The Wheel of Dharma
Was already, always in motion.

We used to discuss, with scorn,
The retired officers charging fee
To procure a meeting with us.

Now after retirement while
Doing consultancy, we charge
A higher fee for meeting officers!

I do feel sorry that I thought ill
Of them then, and so now if others
In the chair think ill of me, let them.

The circle will complete for everyone:
Only there is a season for everything,
As laid down in the Ecclesiastes.

Too often we act - ask our schools to be truant officers, our teachers to be truant officers, because we're giving them children who have, you know, they're not ready to learn. And if they're not ready to learn by the third grade, they know they're behind.

Secular Pope

The secular Pope

Cuba 1957, Havana was full of randy tourists,
prostitutes, gambling casinos and assassins.
Castro was still up his mountain stronghold,
when a robber came onboard our ship;
he was caught on the wooden dock by two
police officers, who pocketed his loot.
He was told to run away and then they shot
him dead…five bullets in his back.
Young red blood dripped into turquoise sea.
The officers laughed holstered guns and lit
Marlboro cigarettes. But Fidel Castro was on
his way down from the mountain and Cuba
would get her dignity back.

The Protectors

police officers and firefighters
deserve an applause
at times they are fighting a loosing cause.
they fight this battle every day
and they do it for little pay.

they risk their lives for you and me
so that we live our lives carefree.
they take away our stress and strains
and have so little to gain.

a little smile, a friendly thank you
for all the things that they do.
walking the streets, or in their cars
always close, never far.

how many of us can say
that into a burning building
we would stay
to save the lives of others
who we do not know.
perishing in a fire
is not the way to go.

police officers stopping
the crimes in the streets
as they patrol their scheduled beat.
going into a house with family abuse
wondering if it'll be of any use.

let us give thanks to all who serve.

including the medical fields
without their concerns
we would not heal.

we thank you from the bottom
of our hearts
for you have become
a very big part.

THANK YOU

On The Civil War On The East Coast Of The United States Of North America 1860-64

Because of the unaccountable spirit of the troops
oh we were marched as we were never marched before
and flanked them off from home. Stupid Meade
was after them, head on to tail, but we convinced
him, finally, to flank, flank, cut off their head.
He finally understood, the idiot, and got a fort
named after him, for wisdom. He probably thought
Lee would conquer Washington from Appomattox
if he, Meade, should march his infantry behind
him, Lee. Ah well, the unaccountable spirit of the troops
triumphed, Meade got his fort, Grant got his presidency,
Sherman got his motto, what was it? War is heck?, Lee got a military school
for the education of young Southern gentlemen, and the Union
Army was taken over by Southern noncommissioned officers
in the wars against the Indians to the west. I know all
about this, I know who won, I served under them
for three hundred and fifty years in World War II,
just long enough not to be called a rookie but a veteran,
and realized the rank and order of my enemies:
first, the West Point officers; second, the red-neck sergeants;
third, the Nazis and perhaps the Japanese. I won
all of these wars as a private soldier, for a while,
and am happy to have done so: without me
Hitler and Hirohito would he ruling the world
instead of America and Russia, but I still will not
drive through Georgia with New York license plates.

On the March to Sinopi

Mithridatis, glorious and powerful,
ruler of great cities,
master of strong armies and fleets,
on the march to Sinopi took a route
through a remote part of the country
where a soothsayer lived.

Mithridatis sent one of his officers
to ask the soothsayer how much more wealth,
how much more power, he'd accumulate in the future.

He dispatched one of his officers,
then continued his march to Sinopi.

The soothsayer withdrew into a secret room.
About a half an hour later he came out
troubled, and said to the officer:
"I wasn't able to clarify things very well.
Today is not a propitious day—
there were some murky shadows, I didn't understand them fully—.
But, I think, the king should be content with what he has.
Anything more will prove dangerous for him.
Remember, officer, to tell him that:
for God's sake to be satisfied with what he has.
Fortune changes suddenly.
Tell King Mithridatis this:
it's extremely rare to come across anyone like his ancestor's companion,
that noble companion who wrote in the earth with his lance
those timely words that saved him: ‘Escape, Mithridatis.' "

Carmichael

A silk scarf and a napkin
Hidden in a drawer
Two hundred bucks in an envelope
Labeled Lenore'
"Maybe she shouldn't see this.
She should never know,"
Said the widow's best friend, Ann,
"I'll just take it and go."
"I'll give her the money later
Say it was in his shoe
That way she'll never find out
That'll do."
"Carmichael was a credit to the force
In everything he did.
It's like we got a big hole in our side
Where he fit.
"If any of you officers
Would like to say a word,
Now would be the time
To be heard."
"Well, thank you, Chief, I sure would.
Carmichael was a partner of mine.
He was always very careful.
And he played it straight down the line."
One by one, the officers spoke
And the service came to a close
He had no living relatives but his wife
And she never showed
She just couldn't face the men
They all understood
They got in their cars
And drove home as directly as they could
"Carmichael, you asshole,"
the new widow sobbed beneath her veil
"Shot down in the line of duty
Is that how justice never fails?"
"I wish that things were better
When we said goodbye today
But we had our share of good times though
Along the way.
"Remember, hey Mr. Las Vegas,
You used to be so cool
We met Wayne Newton down at Pebble Beach
And you acted like a fool?
"We just couldn't stop laughing
It seemed so funny to us
We left our luggage back in the hotel
And almost missed the bus.
"That was a great vacation
Maybe the best of all
But God damn it, Carmichael, you're dead now
And I'm talkin' to the wall."
The force got back to normal
Carmichael was replaced
For one year nobody parked a car
In Carmichael's space.

Fifty Cents A Day

I am an humble Soldier
far from my friends and home,
mid scenes of war and hardships
I constantly must roam,
with many officers over me,
and them I must obey,
and do just what they tell me,
for fifty cents a day.

I enlisted in the army
to help my country's cause,
because I loved it dearly,
and would sustain its laws,
I felt a free man's duty,
his country to obey,
I came not as a hireling,
for fifty cents a day

I enlisted as a soldier.
a free man and a man
To do a soldiers duty,
as best a soldier can.
hope to fight the rebels,
and hate this long delay.
I came to help my country,
for fifty cents a day.

I now must yield to hardships
in cold in storm and rain
perchance with scanty rations
not even then complain
the right of seeking comfort
long since I signed away
my life I am slowly losing
for fifty cents a day.

who send the soldiers to the field
to buy his willing hand,
with promises so plentiful,
of treatment like a man?
twas those who, in two days,
received a larger pay
than does the soldiers in a month
at fifty cents a day

who promised to the soldier,
his wrongs should be redressed
if tyanny or officers
should his right oppress?
alas! the sword may smight him,
or kicked around he may be,
he finds his only redress,
is fifty cents a day

who promised to the soldiers,
if sickness should appear,
good doctors and kind nurses
was ready and was near,
to aid him in his feebleness
as quick as though his pay
was ten times as much
as fifty cents a day.

twas those who wear the shoulder straps
with haughty air of grace,
who look upon the soldier
below the negro race,
who thinks a soldier's duty
is only to obey
his lordship, and be content
with fifty cents a day.

how oft I've seen the soldier,
near tottering to the ground,
seek vainly for some friendly aid,
when it could ne'er be found,
when told he was not ailing,
to go and take his way,
one week would end his suffering
and fifty cents a day.

now, how many of these officers
would be here where they are,
if forced to live like soldiers,
and take a soldier's fare?
how few would take the treatment
even with their liberal pay,
let alone the poor pittance
of fifty cents a day

cheer up my gallant soldiers,
be cheerful, gay, and smile,
we'll do the fighting now,
and the voting after awhile,
and then we'll show oppressors
that they may fell dismay,
who treated us as serviles,
at fifty cents a day.

This poem was written by my great, great, great, grandfather when he was a POW in the civil war. He wrote this during the month of December 1863. I wanted to share this with everyone in memory of him.
