The Diver

The diver supremely inquired into speed,
One rocks faster than the diver himself.
A little planet erupts from the cosmos,
As the pledge has surpassed all quarrel.
The blamed matter argues further to enlighten
Those men and women of the diver's strength.
The dived one can ask the sea, and water in general -
Such questions are reasonable for the pleasure.

A little sea and a little ocean masters us well,
Then the divinity of water ensues,
You relax due to light and darkness
Of the very deep matters.

Love Rules the Diver’s Feat!

Love goads the fall from off the cliff so high!
Love keeps afloat the man, bird-like in sky;
Love frees the mind off risks, unwanted fear;
Love takes the plunge into the sea, now near.

Love bubbles up the diver truly fast,
To gasp for air, above the sea so vast;
Love fills the heart with dare-devilish art;
Love rules the diver’s every, risky feat!

Love rules the diver’s every feat;
Love rules the diver’s feat!

Nick Fluge, Cliff-diving in Acapulco

Flies love, swan-like across the sky
From rocky edge- a moment’s try:
With four limbs raised above the head,
And torso seeming, almost dead!

Taut muscles hold the skeleton
As if it’s frozen on the run,
Twenty-five meters high up in
The air, in total perfection.

Breath held in inspiration full,
The cliff-diver now plunges down
In perfect stance, as head first strikes
The surface waters of the sea.

The golden sun-set forms a veil
Of light of varied hues and shapes;
The diver’s body looking dark,
And touching down in three seconds!

What nerves of steel and stamina!
What acrobatics in the air!
What risks and fears of life and death
Pass through the minds, of those who dare!

Love plunges deep into the sea,
The diver coming up afree:
An act of seconds, masterly-
The world is held spell-bound truly!

My Mother's Memory

There is one bright star in heaven
Ever shining in my night;
God to me one guide has given
Like the sailor's beacon light,
Set on every shoal of danger
Sending out its warning ray
To the homebound weary stranger
Looking for the land-locked bay.
In my farthest, wildest wand'rings
I have turned me to that love,
As a diver, neath the water,
Turns to watch the light above.

Five Images

I
A naked body
bronze as the sun
poises against the sky
to dive,
then flings his form
into the tide,
parting waters
without a splash,
like the day sliding
beneath the sky.

II
The day is sliding
beneath the sky,
slipping away soundlessly,
like a diver
parting waters without a splash.

III
The bronze that tanned his body
slips below the lip of earth,
as bit by bit blue turns to gray;
And the sea darkens as it swallows
the single diver and the sun.

IV
The day drains
beneath the sky
as the lip of earth
fuses with and enters
the blue-gray parted waters
of the eastern sky,
and stars bit by bit
find their light.

V
The sun beneath the sky
so silently sank away,
I had not noticed its descent,
until I rubbed my eyed from strain
and turned on the light.

The Pearl Diver

Kanzo Makame, the diver, sturdy and small Japanee,
Seeker of pearls and of pearl-shell down in the depths of the sea,
Trudged o'er the bed of the ocean, searching industriously.

Over the pearl-grounds the lugger drifted -- a little white speck:
Joe Nagasaki, the "tender", holding the life-line on deck,
Talked through the rope to the diver, knew when to drift or to check.

Kanzo was king of his lugger, master and diver in one,
Diving wherever it pleased him, taking instructions from none;
Hither and thither he wandered, steering by stars and by sun.

Fearless he was beyond credence, looking at death eye to eye:
This was his formula always, "All man go dead by and by --
S'posing time come no can help it -- s'pose time no come, then no die."

Dived in the depths of the Darnleys, down twenty fathom and five;
Down where by law, and by reason, men are forbidden to dive;
Down in a pressure so awful that only the strongest survive:

Sweated four men at the air pumps, fast as the handles could go,
Forcing the air down that reached him heated and tainted, and slow --
Kanzo Makame the diver stayed seven minutes below;

Came up on deck like a dead man, paralysed body and brain;
Suffered, while blood was returning, infinite tortures of pain:
Sailed once again to the Darnleys -- laughed and descended again!

Scarce grew the shell in the shallows, rarely a patch could they touch;
Always the take was so little, always the labour so much;
Always they thought of the Islands held by the lumbering Dutch --

Islands where shell was in plenty lying in passage and bay,
Islands where divers could gather hundreds of shell in a day.
But the lumbering Dutch in their gunboats they hunted the divers away.

Joe Nagasaki, the "tender", finding the profits grow small,
Said, "Let us go to the Islands, try for a number one haul!
If we get caught, go to prison -- let them take lugger and all!"

Kanzo Makame, the diver -- knowing full well what it meant --
Fatalist, gambler, and stoic, smiled a broad smile of content,
Flattened in mainsail and foresail, and off to the Islands they went.

Close to the headlands they drifted, picking up shell by the ton,
Piled up on deck were the oysters, opening wide in the sun,
When, from the lee of the headland, boomed the report of a gun.

Then if the diver was sighted, pearl-shell and lugger must go --
Joe Nagasaki decided (quick was the word and the blow),
Cut both the pipe and the life-line, leaving the diver below!

Kanzo Makame, the diver, failing to quite understand,
Pulled the "haul up" on the life-line, found it was slack in his hand;
Then, like a little brown stoic, lay down and died on the sand.

Joe Nagasaki, the "tender", smiling a sanctified smile,
Headed her straight for the gunboat--throwing out shells all the while --
Then went aboard and reported, "No makee dive in three mile!

"Dress no have got and no helmet -- diver go shore on the spree;
Plenty wind come and break rudder -- lugger get blown out to sea:
Take me to Japanee Consul, he help a poor Japanee!"

So the Dutch let him go; but they watched him, as off from the Islands he ran,
Doubting him much -- but what would you? You have to be sure of your man
Ere you wake up that nest-ful of hornets -- the little brown men of Japan.

Down in the ooze and the coral, down where earth's wonders are spread,
Helmeted, ghastly, and swollen, Kanzo Makame lies dead.
Joe Nagasaki, his "tender", is owner and diver instead.

Wearer of pearls in your necklace, comfort yourself if you can.
These are the risks of the pearling -- these are the ways of Japan;
"Plenty more Japanee diver plenty more little brown man!"

The Lake Josephus Days

We left Little Redfish for Lake Josephus, traveling along the good names — from Stanley to Capehorn to Seafoam to the Rapid River, up Float Creek, past the Greyhound Mine and then to Lake Josephus, and a few days after that up the trail to Hell-diver Lake with the baby on my shoulders and a good limit of trout waiting in Hell-diver.

Knowing the trout would wait there like airplane tickets for us to come, we stopped at Mushroom Springs and had a drink of cold shadowy water and some photographs taken of the baby and me sitting together on a log.

I hope someday we'll have enough money to get those pictures developed. Sometimes I get curious about them, wondering if they will turn out all right. They are in suspension now like seeds in a package. I'll be older when they are developed and easier to please. Look there's the baby! Look there's Mushroom Springs! Look there's me!

I caught the limit of trout within an hour of reaching Hell-diver, and my woman, in all the excitement of good fishing, let the baby fall asleep directly in the sun and when the baby woke up, she puked and I carried her back down the trail.

My woman trailed silently behind, carrying the rods and the fish. The baby puked a couple more times, thimblefuls of gentle lavender vomit, but still it got on my clothes, and her face was hot and flushed.

We stopped at Mushroom Springs. I gave her a small drink of water, not too much, and rinsed the vomit taste out of her mouth. Then I wiped the puke off my clothes and for some strange reason suddenly it was a perfect time, there at Mushroom Springs, to wonder whatever happened to the Zoot suit.

Along with World War II and the Andrews Sisters, the Zoot suit had been very popular in the early 40s. I guess they were all just passing fads.

A sick baby on the trail down from Hell-diver, July 1961, is probably a more important question. It cannot be left to go on forever, a sick baby to take her place in the galaxy, among the comets, bound to pass close to the earth every 173 years.

She stopped puking after Mushroom Springs, and I carried her back down along the path in and out of the shadows and across other nameless springs, and by the time we got down to Lake Josephus, she was all right.

She was soon running around with a big cutthroat trout in her hands, carrying it like a harp on her way to a concert — ten minutes late with no bus in sight and no taxi either.

Anna and the Green Jug

Any girl could seal his poems
with her lips; he would call a poem about her 'Anna
and the Green Jug' -
it's all in the motion, the flux:
her skin passed before him fluty-toned, coming out
and calling inertia to follow -
one and long,
water fell into her throat like a specially skilled diver
while nervously he poured
and swallowed the lyric.

Fill A Bumper of Water

Fill a bumper of water that's pure from the spring,
Bright sparkling and clear as the glass,
And with rapture the joyous emotions we'll sing,
Which enliven our hours as they pass
We'll spurn the rude mirth of the wine-bibber's bowl,
While our Abstinence pleasures exceed it,
And we give you the Pledge with our heart and our soul,
Here's success to the cause and God speed it,
God speed it-God speed it,
Here's success to the Pledge, and God speed it.

Surrounded by virtue, by beauty, and youth,
Dear woman we drink to thy charms;
If we pledge thee in water, we pledge thee in truth
And we take thee with joy to our arms.
Go look at our homes and observe the glad smile,
What welcome on earth can exceed it,
Where affection thus greets us our cares to beguile,
Then success to the Pledge, and God speed it,
God speed it-God speed it,
Success to the Pledge and God speed it.

Tho' we boast not of wealth yet we gladly impart
To a brother a share of our store,
And we hail him with feelings of joy from the heart,
When the slave of Intemperance no more;
Our motto is sympathy, friendship and love,
And aid to a friend should he need it,
Our Charter's recorded by Angels above,
Then success to the Pledge and God speed it,
God speed it-God speed it,
Success to the Pledge and God speed it.

Butterfly in The Sky

While i sit on the smooth rocks
Looking over the soft blue sea
Putting my foot in the water
Slowly moving through the water
Take a deep dive in the water
Feels so cold and relaxing
Coming up to the surface
Moving my arms into a freestyle stroke
Taking deep breaths
Moving faster and faster
Until i feel the wind in my wings
Turning into a butterfly
Up and up i go
Not in the water anymore
I am free in the wind
The sun shines on me
Warms my wings from the water

Water and woman

‘Water, water, everywhere,
But not a dropp to drink’. It is the ocean
Women, women, everywhere,
But not a bit to touch. It is the society

Ocean water is salty and open.
Women water is sweet and seald.

What Curious Dresses All Men Wear

What curious dresses all men wear!
The walker you met in a brown study,
The President smug in rotogravure,
The mannequin, the bathing beauty.

The bubble-dancer, the deep-sea diver,

Hide private parts which I disclose
To those who know what a poem knows.

Looking for your own face

Your face is neither infinite nor ephemeral.
You can never see your own face,
only a reflection, not the face itself.

So you sigh in front of mirrors
and cloud the surface.

It's better to keep your breath cold.
Hold it, like a diver does in the ocean.
One slight movement, the mirror-image goes.

Don't be dead or asleep or awake.
Don't be anything.

What you most want,
what you travel around wishing to find,
lose yourself as lovers lose themselves,
and you'll be that.

All Over The World

With a pet at my side
God in the sky
Snow falling down
Freeze my body to the ground
I cant ride
But one more time
I will ride
All over the world
Washed over the side
Top of the sky
Slow diver down
Two feet land on a different fround
You cant live easily
You cant even speak
But all of them speak
All over the world
I will meet you over there
I am going to meet you over there
Washed over the side
Top of the sky
Slow diver down
Two feet land on a different ground
You cant live easily
You cant even speak
Fish all of them speak
All over the world
A plain with no herd
Not even a bird
When one side is hot
The other side of the moon is not
Its just like a ride
Maybe some time
Theyll make it a ride
All over the world
I will meet you over there
I am going to meet you over there
Time is an arrangement
Time is an arranger
I am a derangement
All my thoughts
All I am are my thoughts
All my thoughts
I am all what Im taught
Better call the ranger
Got a train derailments
Better call the ranger
What Im taught
All I am are my thoughts
All my thoughts
All I am are my thoughts
What Im not

Water so Deep and Profound

Water so sinuous and devious,
And as mystifying as you.
Water is always hiding its true self,
Never in one form.
Water can be the shimmer,
Reflecting off the light of the pond,
Making the pond seem magnificent.
Water can be the rushing sound,
As it escapes the secretive pond,
And runes down into the vast ocean,
Seeking adventure and unfound dreams.
Water can be the feeling of calmness,
As it sits there, overlooking the pond,
With wonder and seeing how it made it what it is.
Water so supple and wondrous,
The pond is born from the water.
Water so deep and profound,
Just like you,
The pond so incomplete without water,
Just like your family.
