Life in a Metro
I live in an apartment on the first floor,
With my name engraved on a brass plate on the door.
Since I am most of the time alone,
The only time I see a soul
Is when I step on the terrace,
Above my garage.
I see some watchmen playing cards,
And maids walking their wards.
It seems people prefer to stay indoors,
I wonder whether they get bored.
It’s the month of May and beads of perspiration
Cover my face and I wonder why I had this aspiration,
To live in a metro while I was growing up
In a small city, I really feel stumped.
You are on a nodding relationship with your neighbors,
And hesitate to ask them for a favor.
People are always fighting for parking space
And don’t mind swearing at the offender’s face.
There are so many cars crammed on the narrow road,
The pedestrian can barely afford
To take a leisurely walk, the children play cricket
On whatever little space is left.
And have to step aside, as a limousine glides blaring a horn
And spoils their excitement of a good game on a Sunday morn.
No wonder they return to their homes,
And sit on the play stations and listen to their I pods.
You feel a sense of alienation
And just eat your dinner in front of television.
If you dare to venture out at night
On the streets,
A leering man behind the wheels will slow down,
While you try to increase your pace with a frown.
I long to walk on a patch of green to lift the gloom,
But have to be content with the sight of gulmohar bloom.
You have to keep your curtains drawn
And are unable to wake up with dawn.
And see the sun’s rays dancing through the window,
The light that dispels the shadows
Of the night and announce it’s another day
I really miss my small town in many ways.

One Small Step
So many people
Need to go so many miles
How do we move them
To where the answer lies
Reach out to the ocean
Beyond the stars that shine
Weve got to take one small step in time
If we are the dreamers
Then the world must be the dream
Driven to question
All the things weve never seen
We search the horizon
Looking for a sign
Weve got to take one small step in time
One step beyond
All our hopes and our passion
There is the light of the universe flashin
All that it takes is one leap of faith
One small step, (one small step)
One small step in time
Deep in the darkness
(deep in the blackness)
Theres a wind that never dies
(theres a wind that never dies)
Out in the vastness
(out in the vastness)
Theres a road across the sky
(a road across the sky)
Out there is the reason
That we were meant to find
Weve got to take one small step in time
Weve got to take one small step in time
(one small step, one small step)
One small step in time
(one small step, one small step)
One small step in time
(one small step, one small step)

Horses In The City
they walk the horses home at night right by my
window they pull their carriages along busy city
streets it's from another time it's like a lullaby but i
don't think that i can sleep tonight so i count the
streetlights i count the stars i make a wish and
wonder where you are i wonder if i'll live long
enough to feel again help me 'cause i'm falling out
of grace i hang my head and hide my face i don't
know what it is i just feel out of place like horses in
the city i played the game i dropped the ball i lost
another friend i gained a future but i can't see
where the future ends i'd write a letter or write a
song but once again my voice just comes out
wrong i wonder if i'll live long enough to sing again
but they don't seem frightened as the cars go
speeding by so why am i so terrified to close my
eyes tonight i'm just afraid there's no time no time
this time they walk the horses home at night right
by my window they pull their carriages along busy
city streets i wonder if they'll live to run without the
reins again

Spiritual Walkers
They knock on your door
You laugh in their face
They tell you its time to pray
They give you a book
And tell you to read
And point to the judgment day
People say they live dangerously
Walking places they should not be
But they will walk their lives
With a never ending light
They will walk their lives
til they shine the light
Of truth into your life
They sit on a stump
You run from their sight
To not hear the holy word
They sing and they chant
They preach and they speak
In tongues you have never heard
But people say they live dangerously
Walking places they should not be
But they will walk their lives
With a never ending light
They will walk their lives
til they shine the light
Of truth into your life
Havent you ever encountered the spiritual walkers
They just walk the light through the day through the night
Havent you ever encountered the spiritual walkers
They just walk the light through the day through the night
Walk on ...
On corners of streets
And airports of tents
They reach out for you to come in
They have no defense
Except inner sense
And knowing the almighty friend
People say they live dangerously
Walking places they should not be
But they will walk their lives
With a never ending light
They will walk their lives
til they shine the light
Of truth into your life truth into your life
Havent you ever encountered the spiritual walkers
They just walk the light through the day through the night
Havent you ever encountered the spiritual walkers
They just walk the light through the day through the night
(repeat)
Come on and shine that light through the day through the night
Havent you ever encountered the spiritual walkers
They just walk the light through the day through the night
Even though when they knock on your door
You laugh in their face
You run from their sight
Not to hear the holy word
They have no defense
Except inner sense
Havent you

Violence Fetish
Bring the violence
It's significant
To the life
If you've ever known anyone
Bring the violence
It's significant
To the life
Can you feel it?
How do you sleep
When you live with your lies
Out of your mouth
Up from your mind
That kind of thinking
Starts a chain reaction
You are a timebomb ticking away
You need to release
What you're feeling inside
Let out the beast
That you're trying to hide
Step right up and be a part of the action
Get your game face on
Because it's time to play
You're pushing and fighting your way
You're ripping it up
How do you live without playing the game
Sit on the side and expect to keep sane
Step right up and be a part of the action
Come get a piece of it before it's too late
Take a look around
You can't deny what you see
Were living in a violent society
Well my brother let me show you a better way
So get your game face on because it's time to play
You're pushing and fighting your way you're ripping it up
So tell me what am I supposed to be
Another goddamn drone
Tell me what am I supposed to be
Should I leave it on the inside
Should I get ready to play

Facing The Frost
People, around me, are confidently striding,
While I worry about slipping and sliding.
Where it is clear, my confidence grows,
But where it is icy, my pace, again, slows.
People are walking, looking fairly relaxed;
While I walk, head down, watching my tracks.
I approach an icy patch, and pull a funny face,
As, once again, I find I have to slow my pace.
I see some children on their way to school;
With walking on ice, they seem pretty cool.
From the looks on their faces, it is very clear,
That, unlike me, they do not hold any fear.
Where I am able, I walk along on the grass,
So that icy patches, on the pavement, I pass.
At times, I have no choice, but to face the ice;
With the threat of potential injury, I now dice.
My face is a picture of concern and worry;
With the ice around, I feel unable to hurry.
My journey to work seems to take forever.
Needless to say, I’m not a fan of this weather.
It is a cold and sunny morn, but by midday,
Some patches of ice have begun to melt away.
The top temperature today is only four degrees;
It’s been forecast that tonight it will, again, freeze.
Upon the frozen ground, where shadows fall,
The frost appears not to have melted at all.
The shady side of the street is still ice white,
While the sunny side, is now clear and bright.
Come afternoon, some patches of ice are still there;
Shrouded in shadow; untouched by the sun’s glare
The day grows older and night time draws near;
The time when Jack Frost, once again, will appear.

Walk Into Light
Close in, move out to where you want to go.
Theres a crowd out there handclapping slow.
Were all powered up, switched on, the rig is tight.
Step into joy. walk into light.
Never mind what some people say.
Theyre going to love you anyway.
Shake off that nervous twitch and feel your strength.
Stand astride the width and walk the length.
Those super-troopers fired and burning bright.
Step into joy. walk into light.
Stand tall and be yourself.
You can do it for your health.
Maybe a circus ring, a disco floor.
Do like we do. and do some more.
A crowded office or a party night.
Step into joy. walk into light.

Music & Lyrics: Hall
I'm tired of playing on the team
It seems I don't get time out anymore
What a change if we set the pace face to face
No one even trying to score
Oh oh I can feel the magic of your touch
And when you move in close a little bit means so much
Ooh yeah, you've got to understand baby
Time out is what I'm here for
One on one I wanna play that game tonight
One on one I know I wanna play that
One on one I wanna play that game tonight
One on one so slow
You can't tell me you don't miss me girl
I think I might know you too well
Wonder what you'd say if you knew that I was coming tonight
Want to? I want you can't you tell
One on one I wanna play that game tonight
One on one I know I wanna play that
One on one I wanna play that game tonight
One on one so slow

One on one I want to play that game tonight...

Smalltown
When youre growing up in a small town
When youre growing up in a small town
When youre growing up in a small town
You say, no one famous ever came from here
When youre growing up in a small town
And youre having a nervous breakdown
And you think that youll never escape it
Yourself or the place that you live
Where did picasso come from
Theres no michelangelo coming from pittsburgh
If art is the tip of the iceberg
Im the part sinking below
When youre growing up in a small town
Bad skin, bad eyes, gay and fatty
People look at you funny
When youre in a small town
My father worked in construction
Its not something for which Im suited
Oh, what is something for which you are suited
Getting out of here
I hate being odd in a small town
If they stare let them stare in new york city
As this pink eyed painting albino
How far can my fantasy go
Im no dali coming from pittsburgh
No adorable lisping capote
My hero, oh, do you think I could meet him
Id camp out at his front door
There is only one good thing about small town
There is only one good use for a small town
There is only one good thing about small town
You know that you want to get out
When youre growing up in a small town
You know youll grow down in a small town
There is only one good use for a small town
You hate it and youll know you have to leave

Good Enough
When footsteps from that Sunday march faded out into the dark
The melody blows in to ease the pain
Two thousand years and we're still here fighting over the same old fear
The muddy steps of hate can't stand this rain
I'll stand up on this stage as if it was my altar
I'll face down all the rage and no, I will not falter
Say I'm good enough to play but not good enough to stay
In your heart
The mat on the floor says welcome, the sign on the door says no
Says 'No coloreds allowed unless you're playing in the show'
Well I've never seen a color except the ones up in the sky
When I see this kind of hatred I die a little inside
I'll stand up on this stage as if it was altar
I'll face down all this rage and no, I will not falter
Say I'm good enough to play but not good enough to stay
And when you finish your song boy you've got to be on your way
But if I'm good enough to play then I'm good enough to stay
In your heart
This one's for the Godfather, Duke, Ella, and the Count
And for all those who fought their way here no matter the amount
For all of God's children walking through dumpsters in the back
Had to finish their show and leave just because their skin was black
They stood up on the stage as if it was their altar
They faced down all the rage and no, they did not falter
They were good enough to play but not good enough to stay
And when they finished their songs boy they had to be on their way
They were good enough to play and somehow they've always stayed
In our hearts
And if I'm good enough to play then we've got to find the space
In our hearts

Next Time
Next time (if I get the chance)
I will take a different stance
Yes, try to be what I am not
And so below unfold my plot) ...
Next time I`ll not turn a cheek
Next time, I shall not be weak
No, next time I won`t weep and wail
For next time round I will not fail
Next time I shall not be late
Next time I won`t hesitate
No, next time I`ll not flounder long
Yes, next time I`ll be sure and strong
Next time I won`t be so small
Next time I`ll walk proud and tall
And next time I won`t hide my face
For next time I will have my place
Next time I shall get it right
Next time I will shout and fight
For next time It won`t be the same
Yes, next time I will win the game
Next time I won`t be afraid
And stay unnoticed in the shade
For next time I will be the one
To shine triumphant `neath the sun
Next time you will hear my voice
Next time, next time I will rejoice
For next time I`ll be brave and free
OH NEXT TIME, YES, JUST WAIT AND SEE! !
(Next time if I can I will
Be all these things, or better still
I`ll stay myself and be content
To live as now, indifferent)

Avenue C
BY B. CLAYTON, J HENDRICKS AND D. LAMBERT
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brass: N. Y. I dig
Reeds: What about it?
Brass: N. Y. is big
Reeds: People tout it
Brass: I flip my wig
Reeds: What about?
Brass: 'Bout a street I dig
Piano (Basie's solo): One day I was walkin' n'
Finally came upon a series of alphabet streets
A-B-C and D, but I went for "C"
The most of the hard-to-forget streets
It's really and truly the dilly of all m'pet streets
Tenor sax: Hey, hey, hey everybody now
Brass: Come go walkin' with me now
Walk up avenue C now
Chicks all lookin' so pretty
They don't give me no pity
Avenue C is the grooviest in the city
Tenor sax: I never dug an avenue so enjoyable to me
"C" Avenue is groovy
Yes it was groovy as it could be
Brass: Walk with me down Avenue C
Tenor sax: Man I really hope to say
Brass: Come on baby, while we ramble
Walk beside me while we ramble
Tenor sax: You dig it too I feel you do
What a scenic hike
It's a walk that you're bound to like
Brass: Y'got "B" on the one side
Reeds: "A"
Brass: "D" on the other
Reeds: "B"
Brass: "C" in the middle
Reeds: "C"
Brass and Reeds: Baby!
Trumpet: The reason that you're feelin' so down, babe
Is 'cause you live in Stuyvesant Town, babe
I dug you down in Hamilton Fish, babe
And realized that you were my dish, babe
Walkin' home and you can walk with me
Walkin' hand in hand up Avenue C, Oh babe
And while we're walkin' we can do some talkin'
While the people dig us wonderin' what we're puttin' down
While we, happy as we can be, glide on
Takin' life in stride up to Murphy Park there beside the river
Brass: Well our feet got rhythm
Reeds: Pure pedal syncopation
Brass: 'N when we walk with 'em
Reeds: Demandin' admiration
Brass: Well our step is snappy
Reeds: Dig people step aside now
Brass: Because we're so happy
Reeds: We're takin' life in stride now
Brass: Avenue C your vibrations are followin' me. Oh yes
Reeds: Everybody busily lookin'
Brass: Yes yes
Reeds: Me and baby steadily cookin'
Brass: Yes yes
Reeds: Start at one end talkin' and movin'
Brass: Yes yes
Reeds: To the other wiggin' and groovin'
Brass: So come
Reeds: You should
Brass: And view
Reeds: I would
Brass: This Ave-
Reeds: You could
Brass: Venue
Reeds: It's good
Brass: Walk on
Reeds: "C" Avenue, see it my way
Brass: Talk on
Reeds: No better view on a highway
Ensemble: Big town you don't know 'till you see it
Brass: Walk on
Reeds: I never saw such a wonderful sight
Drum break
Ensemble: You're gonna love it
Break
Brass: I'm hip, you'll flip
Reeds: When you dig it you'll stop and linger
Brass: You'll pop your top
Reeds: What a pleasure and what a swinger
Ensemble: Go dig it cop that view it's bound to thrill you
(Come on, come on, go)
Go dig it cop that view it's bound to thrill you
(Come on, come on, now, go)
Go dig it cop that view it's bound to thrill you
Go dig it cop that view it's bound to thrill you

The Homeless Man
I reluctantly wake up to another bleary, dreary day
To see the marks from those broken shards of glass
The anxiety, stress and anger, those desperate cries for help
Wrists throbbing, trails of blood, but still on this mortal earth
Shouting, crying at the top of my voice in my head
Those voices and screams, why why, but still left unheard
A hopeless situation in a hopeless uncaring world
Why do I carry on, I do not know
For I am the homeless man
As I walk and wait for the daily metro as the shops begin to open
Looking on as shutters go up, coffees are poured
Those enticing aromas that I can ill afford
Lost in the wilderness, trying to work things out
Confused, not understanding, just want to hide myself away
Those black clouds that are looming heavily above me
To tired to care anymore, to tired to walk, to tired to care
For I am the homeless man
I am the strange man people look at whilst sneering, jeering
Walking down the road getting on with their lives
The business men that carry on with their shallow existence
Unaware and unwilling to care
Their clockwork lives telling them to carry on
Stepping over you, shouting abuse whilst you just sit there
The mothers and children merrily off to school
Complaining because you’re in the way
Why, because I am the homeless man
I wave my hand out, only wanting some small change, begging to live
Thinking whether I will I eat today, but gone without now for so long
Do I even care whether I die or live in the uncaring world
The tall buildings that are drawing me near
Looking from the rooftops above, just one more step and it will all end
Unsure of what is stopping me taking that last plunge
Is there still a glimmer of hope, a strand from a rope to hold on too
For I am the homeless man
I am the man with hidden disabilities
No sticks or wheels to burden or for people to see
But the one in my head, the other person I hate the most
The resentment and anger I have for myself
For the person I have always long to be
Now the paved streets have turned to doors and bars
The sneers and jibes, anxiety and paranoia
What will the future hold for me, we will have to see
For I am the homeless man
So next time you walk through your town or city
On your way to school, work or leisure
And maybe you will come across a homeless man, woman or child
But do not walk past or shun away
A homeless person they may be, but humans they are too
Spare a kind thought, a handshake, or some small change
Because through some misfortune
You too could also be that homeless person

People in my life
Walking down the path of life,
A path often hard, uphill and difficult
I meet people who walk by my side
Some of them choose to touch me
Some of them I touch
Some of them hold my hand and walk with me
All of them scar me somehow
I've met mean people
Violent, angry people
People dark in the soul
People that look good on the outside
People funny and gracious on the surface
But void and empty on the inside
People who try to cover their defects but can't
Emotionally naive, eternally lonely, unhappy and troubled people.
I've met people who step on me to get taller
People who break me to feel better
People who want me for one night only
People who hurt me and don't care
Weird, strange and unstable people
No sense in their behavior
People who take advantage of what I give them
People who don't appreciate me
People who expunge me from their life for good
People who erase me and cancel me with a message
People who refuse to take my calls
People who avoid me like the plague
Irrational people who I want to know better
People who interest me nevertheless...
People who promise won't treat me bad
but do so anyway without explanation
People who reject me abruptly
People who switch me off with the push of a button
People careless about my feelings
Oblivious, confused and indifferent
People who jerk me around for a week
Playing with my vulnerable soul
and toss me in the garbage afterwards.
Why, I ask, why is this happening?
Have normal people disappeared from this world?
Is it me who allows them to step all over me?
Is it my eagerness to meet someone normal
that makes me a magnet for such strange behavior?
Any normal people left out there?
Please come hold my hand
As life's ticking away and I can't hold out any longer
Come and I'll forget all I've been through
I'll try to do it right this time
I'll try to give you just what you need, no more.
Come tonight, I miss you.
I'll be expecting you.

Evening Song of the Thoughtful Child
Shadow children, thin and small,
Now the day is left behind,
You are dancing on the wall,
On the curtains, on the blind.
On the ceiling, children, too,
Peeping round the nursery door,
Let me come and play with you,
As we always played before.
Let's pretend that we have wings
And can really truly fly
Over every sort of things
Up and up into the sky.
Where the sweet star children play--
It does seem a dreadful rule,
They must stay inside all day.
I suppose they go to school.
And to-night, dears, do you see,
They are having such a race
With their father moon--the tree
Almost hides his funny face.
Shadow children, once at night,
I was all tucked up in bed,
Father moon came--such a fright--
Through the window poked his head;
I could see his staring eyes,
O, my dears, I was afraid,
That was not a nice surprise,
And the dreadful noise I made!
Let us make a fairy ring,
Shadow children, hand in hand,
And our songs quite softly sing
That we learned in fairyland.
Shadow children, hin and small,
See, the day is far behind;
And I kiss you--on the wall--
On the curtains--on the blind.

Too Slow To Think
Step aside like the others,
After waking from a slumber.
Shake away your numbness from sleep.
Step aside like the others,
After waking from a slumber.
No need to jump ahead in front with a leap.
You need assistance to keep up with the rhythm.
And...
Your pace is just too slow to think you'll fit in.
The speed has sped to quicken.
And explanations are out of date,
For those trying to catch up much too late.
Where have you been?
To think that you can catch up running.
Where have you been?
To think that others for you wait.
Where have you been?
Your space has been replaced.
And where have you been?
To think that people owe you patience,
With only you to think on their minds.
Not today at this hour of time.
Where have you been?
Your space has been replaced.
And where have you been?
To think that people keep patience,
With only you to think on their minds.
Not today at this hour of time.
Step aside like the others,
After waking from a slumber.
Shake away your numbness from sleep.
Where have you been?
To think that you can catch up running.
Where have you been?
To think that others for you wait.
Where have you been?
Your space has been replaced.
And where have you been?
To think that people owe you patience,
With only you to think on their minds.
Not today at this hour of time.
Step aside,
Like the others after slumber.
Step aside,
Like the others from a sleep.
Step aside,
Like the others after slumber.
Step aside,
Like the others from a sleep.
Step aside.
You're too slow to think.
Step aside.
You're too slow to think.
Step aside.
Step aside...
Like the others after slumber.
Step aside,
Like the others from a sleep,
You're too slow to think.
You're too slow to think.

Summer Night City
Summer night city...
Summer night city...
Waiting for the sunrise, soul dancing in the dark
Summer night city
Walking in the moonlight, love-making in the park
Summer night city
In the sun i feel like sleeping
I can't take it for too long
My impatience slowly creeping
Up my spine and growing strong
I know what's waiting there for me
Tonight i'm loose and fancy-free
Aa-ahhh
When the night comes with the action
I just know it's time to go
Can't resist the strange attraction
From that giant dynamo
Lots to take and lots to give
Time to breathe and time to live
Waiting for the sunrise, soul dancing in the dark
Summer night city
Walking in the moonlight, love-making in the park
Summer night city
It's elusive party feeling
Somehow something turns me on
Some folks only see the middle
We don't miss them when they're gone
I love feeling in the air
My kind of people everywhere
When the night comes with the action
I just know it's time to go
Can't resist the strange attraction
From that giant dynamo
And tomorrow, when it's dawning
And the first birds start to sing
In the pale light of the morning
Nothing's worth remembering
It's a dream, it's out of reach
Scattered driftwood on the beach
Waiting for the sunrise, soul dancing in the dark
Summer night city
Walking in the moonlight, love-making in the park
Summer night city

Watching The World Go By
In a coffee shop window, I sit and stare
At all the people passing by, out there.
In London town, literally anything goes:
Zany hairstyles, as well as crazy clothes.
As a regular visitor, I'm now never surprised
At the sights, which I see set before my eyes.
People of all ages pass by: some young, some old;
Some wear quiet colours, while others wear bold.
Some have mobile phones pressed to their ear:
Their faces full of frowns - no trace of cheer.
But tourists keep a much more leisurely pace;
These are the people with a smile on their face.
Football supporters are just back from a game;
Fuelled with alcohol, they are less than tame.
A tramp searches for food in the nearby trash.
A busker plays his guitar, hoping for some cash.
Small children tightly hold their parents' hands;
The dangers of the city, they don't yet understand.
I see friends greet, and, each other, they happily hug;
The warmth between them, I feel in my coffee mug.
I see teenage girls with hair dyed red or bright blue;
And they dare to flash an amazing amount of flesh to.
Here, people aren't afraid to show just who they are.
Some of them drive around in really cool, funky cars.
London is so different from the town where I reside:
No one in the city feels as though they've got to hide.
Sitting, watching people, just makes the time really fly.
I love sitting in the window, watching the world go by.

Our Small Town
Love going for walks around town
A small town a holler from the big city
The many old building lining the main street
Which by the way isn't main street that's a block away
From the small library to the high school a jot to get to
The sidewalks resemble the old boardwalks from yesteryear
The shops vary as the street winds to the highway
The country air blows thru the street full of manure
Good ole air, they say around here
The small diner with the local farmers dwell at
Talking of this year's events from farming to politics
The ladies at the sew shop talking gossip
It's amazing how time don't change as years pass
Every year the town picnic to the 4th July jamboree
To the harvest dance and everything in between
Small town people living the old time ways
Wishing every town was as good as it
Walking thru saying hey to neighbors all around
Can make everyday a good day
Seeing people in the park enjoying the kids play
The banner welcoming you to our small town
Small town America, loving it, living it

We Live So Fast
Please dont ask me to stay
Im leaving this town
Dont worry now
Believe me as I believe that
Luck is on my side
The future is mine
If I can find
A way through these strange days of my life
We live so fast
Motion, motion
No time to waste
Use it, use it
We live so fast
Motion, motion
Make the first step and reach out for tomorrow
We live so fast
Motion, motion
We cant stand still
Move it, move it
We live so fast
Motion, motion
Move out of my way its time to make it happen
The streets deserted and cold
Theyre not paved with gold
But I dont care
For those who think young will still survive
Making their move
Hoping to prove
That they can face
This big city, small world, big time
We live so fast
Motion, motion
No time to waste
Use it, use it
We live so fast
Motion, motion
Make the first step and reach out for tomorrow
We live so fast
Motion, motion
We cant stand still
Move it, move it
We live so fast
Motion, motion
Move out of my way its time to make it happen
But now I know their ways
I found my place
Saw their true face
Theres nothing to stay for so Ill go
Ill pick up the phone
Still searching for home
We life so fast
Alone but not lonely I move on
We live so fast
Motion, motion
No time to waste
Use it, use it
We live so fast
Motion, motion
Make the first step and reach out for tomorrow
We live so fast
Motion, motion
We cant stand still
Move it, move it
We live so fast
Motion, motion
Move out of my way its time to make it happen
