Times' Closet

Rummaging through Time's Closet
small scenes and quiet joys
looking I
for Meaning's Ploy
which hides in corners
perhaps there is even a secret door in there
where I can or will deploy
some new found secret power
which will make my Time Closet
Grand.
But for now there are only small things
some tattered, semi-hopes
some sweet things
and many many dangling memories
which I take out occasionally;
some to mend and re-make
where reality was too bleak;
I cuddle these
infusing them
with words I never said
or should have
rescue some of them from ignomy
others fondly fondled
as befitting the tiny jewels they are
and then I smile
my slow smile
and for another night
close the door
my closet
treasures
sigh
anticipating
my return
another day.

Skeletons In The Closet

Woah-oh, woah-oh
Skeletons in my closet
Woah-oh, woah-oh yeah
Skeletons in my closet
Skeletons in my closet
Skeletons in my shoes
Skeletons I can only see
I said woah-oh, woah-oh
I got skeletons in my closet
I said woah-oh, woah-oh yeah
Skeletons in my closet
Skeletons I can lose
Skeletons in my basement
Loitering on my streets
Wearing my best pajamas
Sandwiched between my sheets
I said woah-oh, woah-oh yeah
Skeletons in my closet
I said woah-oh, woah-oh yeah
Skeletons in my closet
Ooh, I see bones
I see bones, icy bones
Ooh, I see bones
Say say bones - say boys don't you see them bones?
Rattle them bones at midnight
Shaking my bed, no sleep
I find fingers in my coat pocket
Skeletons from the deep
I said woah-oh, woah-oh
I got skeletons in my closet
I said woah-oh, woah woah-oh
I got skeletons in my closet
Ooh, I see bones
I see bones, s-see bones
Ooh, I see bones
I see bones
Say boys don't you see them bones?
No?
Heart bones, leg bones, ankle bones, arm bones,
finger bones, dogie bones, head bones
Skeletons in my closet
They even know when I'm in my closet
It's my.. my closet
Not your closet
My closet
You can have it though
Alice we want you
Alice
Alice
A-Alice
What?
Whaddya want

Cleaning The Closet

Clear out the clutter
Open the closet door
Take a look around
What is there?

Emotions, habits,
beliefs, people.
The closet must be
cleared,

to make room for the
new.
Exude positive energy.

Stuck In A Closet With Vanna White

Doctor, every night I have the strangest dreams
Doctor, listen to me, tell me what this means
First Im goin shoppin in my underwear
Then all of sudden Im floating in mid air
My lips fall off and everybody starts to stare
Donuts and hot dogs are flying everywhere
Now doctor, wait a minute, you aint heard nothin yet
Next comes the part that I wont ever forget
Now Im bein followed by these russian spies
They give me some velcro, and an order of fries
Suddenly Im bowling on the starship enterprise
I fall down a hole and thats when I realize
I am stuck in a closet with vanna white
Im stuck in a closet with vanna white
Night after night after night after night
All right!
Doctor, wont you tell me, am I going insane
Was it something I ate or something wrong with my brain
See, Im naked in church when I meet a dinosaur
Try to run, but my feet have been nailed to the floor
Then a midget pushes me through a revolving door
And Im back in the very same place I was before
Now Im stuck in a closet with vanna white
Im stuck in a closet with vanna white
Night after night after night after night
And I cant bust out and I cant break free
And its gettin just a little too stuffy here for me
And I cant go home and I cant get loose
And I try to escape but its just no use
And I cant ever leave and I cant ever win
And were runnin outta air and the walls are closin in
And I cant go back and I cant get through
But vanna since youre here, why dont you let me buy a vowel from you
Come on vanna, come on!
Ow, buhhh
Doctor, all those crazy dreams have started again
Thats right, I even wake up screaming now and then
See, Im coming home from work but I forgot my address
Im half an hour late for my algebra test
Then some slimy alien jumps out of my chest
And Im falling and falling and I guess you know the rest
I am stuck in a closet with vanna white
Im stuck in a closet with vanna white
Night after night after night after night
I am stuck in a closet with vanna white
Stuck in a closet with vanna white
N-n-n-night after night after night night night
Then Im stuck in a closet with vanna white (ya-ya ya-ya, ya-ya, ya, ya-ya)
Im stuck in a closet with vanna white
Night after night after night after night
I am stuck in a closet with vanna white (ya-ya ya-ya ya-ya ya-ya)
I am stuck in a closet with vanna white

Keg In The Closet

We had a dog named Bocephus? living in the front yard he liked sleeping out on the top of
the car hed drink beer out of the mason jar and he climb up on everyone bed
A white frame house, a college town, a bunch of people always hanging around, no real
problems we need to drown but we tried our best anyway, we went to class just to pass the time
back in eighty nine
[Chorus:]
We had a Keg in the closet pizza on the floor left over from the night before where
we were going we didnt really care we had all we ever wanted in that keg in the closet
This old guitar taught me how to score right there on the Lambda Chi porch, Mary Ann taught
me a little more one what you cant have, sweatshirts and flag football, spring breaks down in
panama, for a while we had it all we never dreamed it wouldnt last, we went to class just to
pass the time back in eighty nine
[Chorus:]
We had a Keg in the closet pizza on the floor left over from the night before where
we were going we didnt really care we had all we ever wanted in that keg in the closet
We all kind of went our separate ways, but I swear it seems like yesterday
[Chorus:]
We had a Keg in the closet pizza on the floor left over from the night before where
we were going we didnt really care we had all we ever wanted in that keg in the closet

What Did I Do!

I was looking for something in the closet,
I was sure it would be there.
But to my surprise it wasnt there
And I had to look all over the world.
I was telling anybody I need to find it now,
Its very important to find it now.
I wasnt surprised that they didnt care,
And I had to look for it myself.
Where is it? where is it?
Oh, where could it be?
Why dont you help me look for it?
Why dont you help me look for it?
I kept on looking for the thing they say was there,
But I couldnt find it anywhere.
And to my dismay, I didnt even remember
What I was supposed to look for anyway.
What is it? what is it?
Oh, what could it be?
Why dont you tell me what it is?
Why dont you tell me what it is?
I was looking for something I knew was in my head,
I wasnt sure if it were dead.
But to my dismay, it was still there,
I had to close the door real fast.
What did I do? what did I do?
Oh, what did I do?
Why didnt I look in the closet instead?
Why didnt I look in the closet instead?
I was looking for my head in the closet,
I was sure it would be there.
But to my surprise it wasnt there
And I had to look all over the world.
Where is it? where is it?
Oh, where could it be?
Why dont you help me look for it?
Why dont you help me look for it?

Skeletons

(ian hunter/darrel bath/honest john plain)
(transcribed by adrian perkins; corrections by colin ford)
Bimbo, flirts, sluts in skirts - muscles brightly glisten
Conversation's full of filth - let's all have a listen
Oh dear oh dear we live in fear
Media bulbs a poppin'
If you're bent, they're on your scent
There can be no stoppin'
Peroxide blondes, vagabonds, into 'eavy metal
Your hair looks like its been done by a dyke with a score to settle
Mud needs raking, photos taken of your murky past
Haunts you, taunts you, love it don't you
Hey hey the gang's all here
Pimps 'n' pervs, straights 'n' queers
Enquiring minds want to sneer at the skeletons in your closet
Sunday morning in the park,
Down the pub or in the bath
We'll all have a good old laugh
At the skeletons in your closet
Skeletons in your, skeletons in your, skeletons in your closet
Skeletons in your, skeletons in your, skeletons in your closet
It's bloody marvellous - innit?
It's bloody marvellous - innit?
Juicy bits, saucy snips, there's gold in them there gutters
Blue rinse mob on the job, curtains all a-flutter
It's cheapo culture, bleeding ulcers, burnt out by the score
Lurid tales never fails to shock you to the core
Kinky boots 'n' rubbber suits,
It's all going on next door!
Caught you, taught you, love it don't you
If you've had your face re-done
If you spank your girlfriend's bum
We can all join in the fun
At the skeletons in your closet
What's the world coming to?
Ain't we got nothin' better to do?
To spend all day sifting through
The skeletons in your closet
Hey hey the gang's all here
Pimps 'n' pervs, straights 'n' queers
Enquiring minds want to sneer
At the skeletons in your closet

Well, It Worked For Me

First thing I say each night
is
I am my own Lover;
my own best friend.

At first it was words
I did not mean
but over time
I could fill in detail
from little things
that happened each day.

Something positive to celebrate
no matter how small
a smile
a thing small but done
a sincere feeling
given and received.

Busy, I was
saying to my self
each night
building
the person
I want to become.

I added to this
just a small dream list
and acted as though
part of it was true
or coming true
and I found
done each night
my part wish
part recognition
of my small things day
could make part
of my small dreams
also come true.

So over time
I could become
not only Someone
but I could be
the kind of person
I was looking for.

You Hide From Them Your Soul

Oh the tangle weaves of life
Make us as human beings
So unworthy in our lives
To others who think
It’s just all a bad dream
We stand upon the edge
Of life’s calculated risks
Wondering can we be
What others can see
All they ever see
Is the shell that hides your soul?
They poke, prod and question
What kind of life you lead
You hide from them your soul
The journeys of life’s mystery
They think they know you best
But in reality all they see
Is a shell of a being?
That holds your soul to be
One that hides the ghost of pain
That is dormant in your heart
One that’s learnt to live and breathe
Behind a painted door
They often knock to see
If you are still here in reality
Little do they know?
Of your secret life of woe
Only once in while
You let them in your life
Then firmly close the door
That hides your secret life

A Smothering of Poets

A love which ends badly-
if we let it-
freezes Time;

and we move on
covering it;

leaving it unchanged and unresolved.

We plant the last Kiss
with a question mark
knotted in the Semi-finish..

We drag our Dead Poet Love
into the future
bound and gagged
in the truck of the car
because all past loves
are Dead Poets;

we ignore the muffled cries
in the rear;

drive toward the future
tamping down the present
with a finger
dipped in
past and jaded memory.

We smother old past poets
put them away in the dark closet
because New Love
most often
doesn't share our love of
Former Poetries.

We reel in the Future now
before it is born;
strangled;

we make Hope for New Love
to lie
down in the cold;

but, our warm coat
is in the closet
which means
at odd times
in the chill
we dream of dead poets,

who sometimes
don't remain
dead still
in the trunk of the car
in the closet
in the category
nil.

Tag, You're It

Let's assume
That he's the groom
And he's been waiting
To consummate all night
And you're the bride
You're locked tight
Inside the bathroom
And you're overcome with freight
Now here's the chiller
He's the killer
You've discovered
You're trapped, alone, you're scared
We cut to you, we move in close
You're catatonic
You get a close up there
And in this shot
Here's what we got
He breaks the door down
And tears your nightgown lace
You see a can, it's aerosol
You grab the hair spray
And light it in his face
There's a very hungry man in the cellar
Oh, waiting
Or is he in the attic closet
Waiting
Debbie? I like this game.
Debbie?
Debbie? Debbie? Debbie?
He blindly grabs you
Tries to stab you
But you're quicker
You over act right here
You see a cat, a ball of yarn
A knitting needle
His vision's still not clear
He's stumbling 'round
Don't make a sound
And then he grabs you
"Hide and seek, my dear?"
He shifts his glance
You see your chance
You grab the needle and you
You plunge it in his ear
There's a very hungry man in the cellar
Oh, waiting
Or is he in the attic closet
Waiting
There's a very hungry man in the cellar
Oh, waiting
Or is he in the attic closet
Waiting
And just like the scene
In "Halloween"
You think it's all over
And you're gazing into space
But you got to make sure
You hear something, you start to turn
And you're standing there frozen
Staring him face to face
And he looks at you and says
"Tag, you're it, Sweetie
Bye, Debbie. Debbie, Debbie, Debbie.
Goodbye, Debbie...

Kickin It With Your Girlfriend

I've been kickin it with your girlfriend (oh)
What am i gonna do (oh)
Cuz God knows that i really didn't mean to hurt you (oh ooh)
I know its bogus, but i felt that you should know the truth (oh ooh)
I fell in love with her the moment we were introduced
And i just feel that its time for little secret to end
Baby im kickin it with your girlfriend
oh oh ooh oh oh oh oh ooh oh oh oh (2x)
Go on and slap me again cuz i can understand how you feel
When a man takes you for granted and he don't keep it real
I should have been more man and told you a long time ago
Instead of stuntin i should have broke it down and let you know
Girl my fault for that, don't know whats on my mind
And i blame myself for wasting your time
Believe i really tried to keep that girl away from me
But her body language kept on temptin and teasin me
And plus she knew what she was doin, and did it anyway
I knew what she was doin too and that made it ok
Truth is, is that we don't even regret it
Up out the closet i will be the first to say it
I've been kickin it with your girlfriend (oh)
What am i gonna do (oh)
Cuz God knows that i really didn't mean to hurt you (oh ooh)
I know its bogus, but i felt that you should know the truth (oh ooh)
I fell in love with her the moment we were introduced
And i just feel that its time for little secret to end
Baby im kickin it with your girlfriend
oh oh ooh oh oh oh oh ooh
Now I apologize for me and her and everything that went down
These are the reasons that some girls don't bring their friends around
I just didn't know how to tell you, that i was feeling her
And how we would get away sometimes with makin love
I never wanted to mislead you
At first i just wanted to please you
I know its hard for you to be able to trust again
Cuz i came between you and your best friend
I did not ask for this
It just happened out of no where every since the day we kissed
and the truth is, is that we don't even regret it
Up out the closet i will be the first to say it
I've been kickin it with your girlfriend (oh)
What am i gonna do (oh)
Cuz God knows that i really didn't mean to hurt you (oh ooh)
I know its bogus, but i felt that you should know the truth (oh ooh)
I fell in love with her the moment we were introduced
And i just feel that its time for little secret to end
Baby im kickin it with your girlfriend (oh)
I'm sorry again (i never meant to hurt you)
I'm sorry agian (but girl i love her)
I'm sorry again (i never meant to make you cry no)
Now im up out the closet
I've been kickin it with your girlfriend (oh)
What am i gonna do (oh)
Cuz God knows that i really didn't mean to hurt you (oh ooh)
I know its bogus, but i felt that you should know the truth (oh ooh)

So, You Think You've Found Me

I am not here
Not in these words
not on these pages.
I know..
You think if you read
Enough
Of what I write
You'll know me inside and out..
One small problem though
(I say this as I smile)
I am no longer
Who I use to be
When I use to be
The 'She' who wrote this..
I don't publish until I've grown
From the poem I use to be
If I was her at all...
Sometimes the 'She' you read
She isn't me at all
But a friend,
Or a story I read in the paper
Or a conversation I overheard..
The she you're looking for
You'd have to confront
Ask her all the tough questions yourself.
I'm not there..
In the tattered old pages
Of the poetry book you love so much..
If you read enough
Maybe you'll get a glimpse of the girl
The fragile creature I use to be..
That innocent thing who believed
In magical things so easily..
She does make an appearance from time to time..
She was very sweet..
The me you seek, you may not find..
I hide even from myself from time to time..
I grow from day to day
Oops! You missed it,
I've already changed.
Now some things, those are constant..
But, they aren't found here
Where you look for me.

You are not the tears I shed

and I am not the words you speak

as we are not these things that make us

Separate/together

What is the sum of us

words and tears

The whole seen in fragments

Like the items thrown haphazard into an overnight bag

for a weekend tryst,

forgotten, put aside

Only to be discovered later in the back of my closet

the scattered remains of what was/is

words and tears,

You and I

whole/apart

pieced together, the archeology of love

the shards of memory

Lost and found

And I am not the tears you shed,

as you are not the words I write

Yet we are perhaps these things that make us

Together/separate

Andy Warhol Was Right

Twisted Little Daydreams
Memories with pain
Locking me behind the closet door
I will be a good boy
Promise I wont run
Sit quite in my room
Playing with my toy gun
Now I'm older but the memories
still eat me like disease.
Alone in the darkness
watching you on my t.v.
Why did God make you so famous
when he only spit on me.
I want to bathe in your light.
I want to be on the news.
If I take your life
its nothing personal.
Just a boy and his toy gun
dying for attention.
I'm sitting on the steps.
The sun is sinking low.
The world gets very quiet
as the street lamps start to glow.
I step out and I raise my gun
time just seems to slow.
For a moment I can see myself
trapped in your reflection.
I'm angry and I'm lonely
and I'm dying for attention.
I want to bathe in your light.
I want to be on the news.
If I take your life
its nothing personal.
Just a boy and his toy gun
dying for attention.
Dying for attention.

Love-letting

'Woman places corpse of husband in closet.
Linah B-,64, said her husband died
In October 31 in either 1977 or 1978 and she
Put him in a closet because she
Couldn't pay for a proper burial...'

Might've been a good case
For Perry Mason if foul play
Had been suspected, but
The authorities got to the bottom
Of the matter when they

Got the call from the workmen
Painting the house.
Seems there was a little more than
Plaster-of-Paris on a closet floor
Than the woman let on.

One might wonder at the woman's stead
To bear the dead crime,
'No, J- is not home today, '
No one the wiser what lay
In the closet's keep.

It'll probably be the 'in' thing now-
Home Burial.
Little women will squirrel
Their loved ones away-
Where the dead never leave the house.

Cant We Talk It Over In Bed

(sandy linzer/irwin levine)
Harsh words are spoken
Promises are broken
Old wounds are opened
And love walks out that door
Too proud to make up
Youre ready to break up
Too late youll wake up
And love walks out that door
Baby, oh sweet baby
I didnt mean a word I said
You know that I love you
Cant we talk it over in bed
I never meant to hurt you
I must have been out of my head
Tell me you still want me
Cant we talk it over in bed
Talk, talk, talk it over
Talk,lets talk it out baby
Harsh words are spoken
Promises are broken
Old wounds are opened
And love walks out that door
Too proud to make up
Youre ready to break up
Too late youll wake up
And love walks out that door
Out that door
Baby, oh sweet baby
Wont let you walk out that door
Come on a little closer
Cant we just forgive and forget
Everything seems to work out
When we talk it over in bed
Too much time apart
We need a little heart to heart
Cant sleep without you baby
Oooh, cuddle up, cuddle up, cuddle up, cuddle up, baby
Dont end the night this way
Oooh, cuddle up, cuddle up, cuddle up, cuddle up, cuddle up, baby
Oh sweet baby
I didnt mean a word I said
You know that I love you

Heidelberg recollections

Too many memories cling
to the places where you life and stay
from being small and in thoughts you pass
the pain and think about the joy,
so as if good things can make up for that which hurts.

Poems was in my dad’s heart, so as if Afrikaans
is a living thing,
from being small I was aware
of his voice letting words cling to me,
even at the mourning,
where without really realizing
what the meaning of it is
I stood at his grave in the red-brown sand
and saw crying people passing

and for me it was as if he just went away,
but his big black car
with the fins was still there and daily
mother used it to drive to work
and I was really scared
that at a time she would also take to the road
and when she in the mornings was leaving
I was wondering if I would see her again?

The black jacket and hat
with which dad made us scared
when we did not want to eat
or did not want to learn
what he was teaching us
still was hanging behind the door
and time and again I looked
at these objects
expecting them
to on a day come to life again
with dad disguising him self in them
like when I was naughty,
when he came in through the back door.

The Closet

In the closet hung her dresses
and her shoes were on the floor.
She would not wear the dresses now
nor the shoes anymore.
He could not give her clothes away.
He smelled them everyday.

In the closet hung her robes
and nightgowns that were sheer.
She would not wear them in the nights,
her nights no longer here.
He could not give them all away.
He fingered them every day.

In the closet he felt close to her
and spoke in whispered word.
'I remember how you looked in these.'
He spoke as if she heard.
'I cannot give your clothes away.
They're all I have of you today.'

First Person Omniscient

I made her tell me of the affair,
every detail,

and I became him, the man who pulled
her into the closet,

opening the many rooms of her mouth,
knobs spinning,

and then I was her, pulling him
by the tongue

through the river of rooms in the mansion
of my mouth,

his eyes pressing into me, his eye
seeing all,

and then I was the closet, the space
they traveled through

on their way to the mansion, and then the real
I entered the closet,

the wind of doors slamming, bodies
rushing, gone-

my eye lost in the mouth of my pocket,
