Nosehopper
You are right, Nosehopper...
I am no Langston.
Or a Maya do I choose to be.
Nor a Nikki, Amiri OR Muhammad Ali.
And I admire them with all my heart.
However...
My name is Lawrence.
And I intend to play a major part.
I have my own way of saying things.
With a taste of tomorrow!
And what that offering brings.
Following behind someone's footsteps...?
I ain't never did.
Like they never used AIN'T ever in their language!
And I ain't all over the place...
Bigtime!
You are right, Nosehopper...
I am not like them at all!
'What's a nosehopper? '
Somebody in other people's business.
Like you.
Who try to discourage their efforts!

Bigtime Operators
Well, they told me to come on over
I made my way to new york
And they tried to have me deported
Stop me from getting work
Blacklisted me all over
They were vicious and they were mean
They were bigtime operators
Baby, on the music business scene
Oh, they looked like politicians
But underneath they were thugs
And they spread malicious rumours
Threatened to have me busted for drugs
They had nothing on me
Oh man, I was really clean
But they were bigtime operators
On the music business scene
They put a bug in my apartment
To listen in on my calls
I was looking for some motivation
I couldnt find any, any motivation at all
They were very desperate people
Riding in long black limousines
But they were bigtime operators
On the music business scene
They were glorified by the media
They were heroes who had names
They said that they would bury me
If I didnt play their game
They said I didnt know the score
And that I was young and green
They were bigame operators
On the music business scene
Tried to hold me to a phoney contract
I said I didnt agree
Had to get out of the clutches
Had to go underground you see
Now Im living in another country
But I know exactly just where Ive been
Stay away from bigtime operators
Baby, on the music business scene
Well, baby bigtime operators
On the music business scene
Oh baby, bigtime operators
On the music business scene
Well, full of names and places
Baby, you know who I mean

Bigtime
Hey dragged up my holly and I pull it to a town for the bigtime
Hey rig down the road I tore 'em down I'm a bigtime
I wheeled right in them swinging doors
Out through the window with half of that store
Everybody stopped and roared here comes Bigtime
Lemme grab me a bottle when I bit off a tap cause I'm bigtime
I do a 90 miles an hour in this speedin' trap and that's bigtime
I rolled up the telephone pole and then I kissed 15 women fought 16 men
I thought I'd start over again for another bigtime
And then a cop come up he said I see you've been enjoyin' quite a bigtime yeah
But you got to pay for what have been destroyed Mr Bigtime
I told that cop you better cut right out
Cause you're a little bitty man I'm a great big trout
I swung at him and the lights went out on my bigtime
Hey here I am coolin' in the country slam and this is the bigtime
The judge didn't believe how imprtant I am he gave me bigtime
And in the bunk above me there is a poor tempted soul
He shot his wife cause she sneezed untold
Hope he didn't catch cold here in the bigtime
Hey when I get out I can have it made I could be bigtime
Vause my safecracker buddies wanna teach me the trade in their bigtime
I thanked them kindly but I told them no when I get out I'm gonna take it slow

Perception
People do choose to protect their delusions,
In ways they've been taught...
Feels safe.
And perception plays a major part,
In the separating of truth...
From one's mind and heart!
If someone believes what another has said...
Little if any research will be done,
Before what has been shared is spread.
And this eases the way,
For a round of gossip to land in one's head.
And perception plays a major part,
In the separating of truth...
From one's mind and heart!
People do choose to protect their delusions,
In ways they've been taught...
Feels safe.

'The bigtime for you is just around the corner.' They told me that first in 1952 - boy, it's been a long corner. If I don't hit the bigtime in the next 25 or 30 years, I'm gonna pack in the music business and become a full-time gigolo.

Simplistic Wishes
I am influenced by Poe.
But there is no comparison.
Maya too inspires.
And Langston seems to 'crystalize'...
The hardships of a people,
Observed through his unique eyes.
Those dark and emotional days,
Arriving with Sunrise...
And until Sunset left,
But within me stayed.
Aren't as dark,
To cast Moonlit shadows.
It seems I have graduated,
To controlled melancholy...
And free flowing sentiments.
I attribute that to aging.
As time releases,
Those reflections of memories...
More than ever to me meant.
I am influenced by Poe.
But there is no comparison.
Maya too inspires.
And Langston seems to 'crystalize'...
The hardships of a people,
Observed through his unique eyes.
And even though my own eyes,
Are opened wider than ever...
There is a sensitivity I've noticed increasing.
There is a connection to humanity,
That enables me to see each day...
Much brighter than the days before.
So bright with a clarity,
My simplistic wishes now...
Are to experience many many more.
With an opening of a door,
To adventure life,
With intentions to explore.

Do It! It Works
Don't deal with those,
Who wish you failure.
Or participate in their shenanigans.
You've got to watch your back,
Around people like that.
Don't seek from them approval,
Or try to appeal with your disclosures.
But keep your eyes open...
And your tongue still,
Behind a mouth kept closed.
Today it's getting more difficult,
To even trust yourself.
And you know who you are.
And what it takes to weaken your temptations.
It is worse to make promises...
The lips may utter,
But the heart does not keep.
And sharing them with others...
Does not decrease their teasing.
They may not admit it...
But they wish to see you quit!
To rid yourself of dreams.
So they can be the ones to say...
Give up your hopes,
As they scheme.
While doing their best to discourage your efforts.
By saying things intended to demean.
Don't deal with those,
Who wish you failure.
Or participate in their shenanigans.
You've got to watch your back,
Around people like that.
And...
Don't seek from them approval,
Or try to appeal with your disclosures.
But keep your eyes opened.
And your tongue sitting still.
Keep your teeth clinched...
Behind a mouth kept closed.
And you will remain peaceful,
Happy and fulfilled.
Do it!
It works.
Few who make claims they know you...
Are not that supportive of your success!
Choose to remove your life...
From someone else's contest.
Champion your own efforts.
Do it!
It works.

Each Day Lived Has Been a Dream
Why do you wish to know,
What will happen tomorrow?
You are not living today,
To appreciate what tomorrow brings.
Each day lived has been a dream.
A wish often disregarded.
And you were not prepared to start,
To fulfill your desires...
Or take part.
Each day lived has been a dream.
If your heart is not in it...
Tomorrow will come and go.
And you will not realize,
Or know you have benefitted...
And grow.

Maya Love
Maya love - maya love,
Maya love is like the sea
Flowing in and out of me
Maya love - maya love,
Maya love is like the day
First it comes, then it rolls away
Maya love - maya love,
Maya love is like the wind
Blowing hard on everything
Maya love - maya love,
Maya love is like the rain
Beating on your window brain
Maya love - maya love,
Maya love is like the stream
Flowing through this cosmic dream

MAya Maya
she came a long way to me
but I found her in my heart
she came a long way to me
but I found her in my soul
she came a long way alone
but she was in; always with me
maya maya she was always indeep
she danced for me
she rose a dream;
for me
she broke the sound
of groan in me
for me
she was a hope
for me
she sang her songs
for me
and gave the freedom
her sound to me
maya the voice of freedom
for me
maya a sound out for me

Little Discourage
I found a mountain on my own (I'm encouraged)
Trust history to say it's unknown (It's discouraging)
There's a seventeen contest in my own home (Discourage)
Sick of seventeen contests in my own home (Discourage)
Don't cross the road, you're under a spell
A broken violin (Discourage)
Don't cross the road, you're under a spell
Of broken violins
But all I need is a little discourage
All I need is a little discourage
All I need is a little discourage
All I need is a little discourage
All I need is a little discourage
I ran away from my own telephone (Discourage)
It rings to tell you what the future holds in store, so.....
There's a lack of confidence at home (Discourage)
When a seventeen contest fills your own home (Discourage)
Put your trust in courage, no one can tell
The broken violin
All I need is a little discourage
(The world knows what I need, but it's proving far too hard for me

When Remembered For What It Is And Missed
Knowing the business of one's talent helps,
After establishing a recognition.
It is not the fact that one gains attention,
That a gift is remembered when it is presented.
It is the timelessness of content.
And one's ability to perceive,
From where that talent comes...
To one who has received it from a birth given.
To acknowledge a tree and admire its leaves,
To then disregard its roots...
Is a foolish position one should never take.
People become curious when one's talent is exposed.
But only those who are about the genuineness,
Of their talents from a business sense...
Continue to work on it all their lives.
And the growth and blooming of it shows to others,
Who enjoy the taste of it over and over again.
Since the quality of it never diminishes,
When remembered for what it is and missed.
And a true talent that is,
Never becomes subjected to standards lowered...
By those who excel,
In limited beliefs...
That a game pf playing a battle of wits,
Is part of it!
It isn't.
Not in this genre!

An Emptiness Collected (Things)
Things,
People pray for.
Things,
People have.
Things,
All around the people.
And things they have make them sad.
Things,
They ask of God to give.
Things,
They get don't please.
And when they realize it's not things they need...
That touch that is desired and wanted,
Has come to leave...
Them!
With their things!
And a generous offering,
Felt...
Of an emptiness collected!

Not Your Type Of Town
It will never be known as a cultural town
Where footballers and macho men vie for renown
In the pub one once spoke of Rembrandt someone asked who is he
If he does play football his name is strange to me.
If you cannot talk of work, farming, politics or sports and join your pub mates in a beer
This not your sort of town what business have you here
Though if you like line dancing and Country music that might be your saving grace
For these are the most cultural things that are known to the place.
If you talk of Beethoven or Handel they might ask who are they
For they must not be famous never heard of them anyway
Those we most admire play cricket or football
These are the people that we wish to recall.
If you are literary minded or a poet at heart
Or if you are one who is interested in art
Then this is a town you ought not to live in
For here you may not meet with similar kin.

Drive
Sometimes I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear
And I cant help but ask myself how much Ill let the fear take the wheel and steer
Its driven me before, it seems to have a vague
Haunting mass appeal
Lately Im beginning to find that I should be the one behind the wheel
Whatever tomorrow brings, Ill be there
With open arms and open eyes yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, Ill be there, Ill be there
So if I decide to waiver my chance to be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine and hold my own and drive, oh oh
Its driven me before, it seems to be the way
That everyone else get around
Lately, Im beginning to find that when I drive myself, my light is found
Whatever tomorrow brings, Ill be there
With open arms and open eyes yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, Ill be there, Ill be there
Would you choose water over wine
Hold the wheel and drive
Whatever tomorrow brings, Ill be there
With open arms and open eyes yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, Ill be there, Ill be there

May I Have Another Helping of Those Delicious Critics, Please?
What do I have to say,
To those who are my critics?
I have been aware of them,
Since I began taking my first steps.
Since my first breath taken...
Was done independently.
I've heard it said,
My lifetime of actions...
By them has been disapproved.
And things I do have been ego led.
It's believed what I do,
Is done to seek attention.
Even those things I do to cleanse,
In privacy...
I care not mention.
We all have talents,
And those gifts that are given.
How I use the ones I have...
Aren't from a critic's invention.
Or maybe because of the creation of 'them'.
Who knows?
Perhaps that's what has them upset.
And if they have time like that to waste...
Don't hesitate in delay to say,
I am just getting started.
And what I've given to them to nibble...
Is just a little taste.
From a baking not completed,
Yet imaginations rate!
They have no idea,
Of who I am!
Or the making of 'me'.
And-what-that-takes!
Since I'm the cooker who does the feeding...
I know who eats!
And those served,
That ate.
Those who choose to regurgitate...
Do it without my decision given to make!
What do I have to say,
To those who are my critics?
I do admire their efforts,
But...
What's there is there for them to digest.
I'm not about to give up my peace,
Or my mind for them to test.
My eyes are clear,
And focused on my progress.
Not on things that I've done.
For purposes to keep manifested,
The days I spent in my youth...
Doing things to shock and stun,
Just for the 'hell' of having devilish fun.
Although I must admit,
There is 'something' about controversy...
That appetites my palate much more than just a bit.
'Excuse me...
I know I shouldn't.
Since I am here by invitation.
But,
May I have another helping of those delicious critics,
Please?
I can not believe they could be this delicious.
What have these critics been mixed with? '

Lip and Nonsense
Choose if you wish,
To strip and whip me...
With lip and nonsense.
Too long have I recognize,
Longevity does not guarantee...
One a smooth life ride.
And I intend to enjoy every bit of it.
Spitting the experience of bitterness.
If there is a taste I can not stomach.
And admitting when and where,
Joy comes to sit and visit.
With a daring to prolong its stay!

Beauty
Will you stop it and go away! ?
I can't get anything done!
In my eyes you seem to stay.
'Well...
Look the other way!
I can't change what it is you see! '
That's my point, Beauty!
I'm just recognizing,
You are all over the place!
You've been here all the time?
Everywhere in my face?
And now that I've awakened...
I'd rather admire your grace.
Forgiving and forgetting,
My disgraceful attitudes
Accompanied by my bad taste!
'I thought you said,
You couldn't get 'anything' done? '
Those selfish things I was accustomed to do.
Believing I alone had something to prove.
But now that I've discovered you...
And in everything you are...
Even things once ugly,
You are there in all things and in everyone!
I am aware of exactly what you are!
I'm sure what I've done can be quickly overcomed!
Now that you've shown me,
The quality of what 'you've' done!
Beauty I am nothing!
I 'see' you...and I am stunned!

Night-Night from Africa
What has Africa shown you today?
Was it colour; it's wildlife or just how to play?
What did you do in Africa's bush?
Did you take your time or did you rush?
Slow down, my friend. The animals do.
If observed with care they'll demonstrate too,
how to live life with leisure, wasting no time,
but enjoying the bushveld, like very fine wine.
Did Africa speak to you today?
Did you feel her soul? What did she say?
Did your spirit engage with that of the earth?
Did your humorous side enjoy all her mirth?
Did you smell all her perfumes? Enjoy all her charms?
Did you taste all her flavours from all of her farms?
What stories to tell you will have after this,
of adventure, excitement and Africa's kiss.
This is the place where today you have grown.
Your exposure to bushveld a seed well sown.
The sons of Africa - you are now one
This group of Africans have no need of gun
It is camera, binocular that these people bring
The wildlife so good it'll make your heart sing
Celebrate that growth with a glass of good cheer
Look forward to Africa's bounty in here.
Now is the time for you to get rest
For tomorrow, for Africa, you must look your best
Lay head on to pillow and wait for your dreams
Of lions and elephant, mules and ox teams
You'll dream of pioneering in years far gone by
and imagine you're part of it; Wait! What's that cry?
Is it Jackal? Hyena? Or wild dog d'you think?
Relax, s'just an ostrich giving mate a lewd wink! !
So tomorrow in Africa, you must dress the part
Your renewal begins with a bright early start! !
Tomorrow the sun will rise in the east
Warming the earth for Africa's feast
All nature awakens stretching its limbs
Look forward to whatever the new day brings
And you will play a small part in the show
Affecting the bushveld wherever you go
Sleep tight now, my friend, sleep deep and sleep well
That yawn you just had was your bedtime bell.
Did you see how the sun went to bed tonight?
How can such colours be painted so bright?
Did you notice the blues and the purples on hills?
Did you feel the change as temperature chilled?
Did you hear the bushveld's choir start?
Did you taste the atmosphere, the bushveld's heart?
This is sundown in Africa, you know it is true
And today she enjoyed one made better by you.

Democracy
Democracy will not come
Today, this year
Nor ever
Through compromise and fear.
I have as much right
As the other fellow has
To stand
On my two feet
And own the land.
I tire so of hearing people say,
Let things take their course.
Tomorrow is another day.
I do not need my freedom when I'm dead.
I cannot live on tomorrow's bread.
Freedom
Is a strong seed
Planted
In a great need.
I live here, too.
I want freedom
Just as you.

To Radiate or Shine Bright With Light
There is a couple of things I've always known.
My worth and value.
And there is nothing I treasure more,
When in the act of giving without expectation.
Some choose to be represented,
By things seen to flaunt.
As if the age of what is shown is priceless.
As if it could sit without reflecting dust.
Or tease with taunts,
To agitate an envy...
Wished and wanted.
While others consume themselves,
Collecting names to drop.
As if this raises them up a notch.
But these insecurities never meant a thing to me.
I've observed street sweepers,
With more personality and far more dignity.
People like that I see as really being on the top.
People empty of identity and purpose...
Could sit behind the wheel of a Mercedes,
For all I care.
They seem to be nurtured from a hollow crop.
They could drive from point A to arrive at B...
And still not have a thing to offer or share.
But empty conceit and hot air to spare.
There is a couple of things I've always known.
My worth and value.
And there is nothing more I admire...
When I see that within others!
And they don't have to have a dime in their pockets,
To radiate or shine bright with light!
These are the folks I admire and like.
These are the folks who excite my life!
