Native Born

I love it when I am approached by someone,
Who is totally oblivious to my attachment...
To my ethnicity that is affliated with my appearance.
I want to be identified as a Blackman of pride.
And dignity.

There are many who are of African ancestry,
Who are still in debate about that.
I've never been puzzled about the issue.
So whenever I am approached and questioned,
How does it feel to be a Black man living...
With feelings that are isolated?
I have to ensure I respond to that...
With a confirmation someone with a consciousness,
Has indeed asked me that question.

Since it should be obvious,
I have a head full of hair dreadlocked for a reason.
And one of them is not to keep what I feel hidden.
I have already been a 'Negro'.
I am an American.
Native born.
Like my daddy and my momma...
And their daddies and mommas before them.
And...
I am extremely proud of my Indian heritage as well.

To Amuse At The Expense Of Wasted Time

Would these be betting odds,
That an asking of someone...
Who has done something in their life,
For more than 'sixty years'.
And approached to be questioned,
What they have been doing...
Since they were last seen ten years ago?

And that question has been asked,
By that same person rerpeatedly.
And the response is known.

What would be the likely odds,
That the person asked the question...
Would 'not' be doing,
What has become an obvious love...
For what that person does.

Should the one asking that same question,
Take a gamble and ask another question...
That would initiate a conversation,
Expressing a real interest?
And not just say the same thing to re-tread.

I maybe wrong about this,
But...
Leaving the person feeling a sense of being appreciated,
Would probably reveal a human being existing.
Instead of a novelty to amuse at the expense of wasted time.

American Pride

(Throughout the singing of this song there is continuous
background of announcements about 9-11 incident by
goverment leaders and announcers)
American pride something you feel inside
Something you can't describe American pride.
Dad said, Son I'm proud you won
But the game is more than any toy
Mama said, Now Son say sir and say ma'am
And be proud you're southern born
You play when you're hurt and you work when you're tired
'Cause that was Grandpa's way
And the biscuits are better at Granny's house
And the gravy taste great all day.
American pride yes it is something you feel inside
Something you can't describe, something you cannot hide
American pride something you feel inside
Traditions run deep and wide with American pride.
When a baby is born we all celebrate
With tears of joy in family eyes
'Cause we all know the baby
Will grow up with American pride
Yeah. we work and we play and we have our own ways
And we don't all look alike
But if the cause is right we stand up and fight
To protect our American pride.
Sing it, sing it, sing it.
American pride yes it is something you feel inside
It's something you can't describe,
Yt's something you can't hide
American pride, something you feel inside
Traditions run deep and wide with American pride.
With American pride, it's American pride...

Love becomes me

We fly above clouds,
I thought it friendship,
You perceived it companionship,
We became immune,
Love approached us,
Love becomes me

We settled in the mists,
Taking pride in our thoughts,
We never saw it come,
Love approached,
Love became me

We drowned in love,
We became adventurous,
I found you beautiful
You found me handsome
My word i wooed
You were delighted in them
Love approached me,
Love becomes me

We crossed the boundaries,
We got it all long,
And it grew all strong
Love approached me,
It gave a call, i answered,
Love becomes me

Enjoy Your Day

You approached me to ask a question.
And taking my time to listen...
With a response I had hoped,
You would comprehend.
Not only did you not do that.
But you edited my answer...
To 'insert' what you thought,
For you did not offend.

Now you accuse me of not being direct.
You say my answer,
For you is not effective.
You inject words connected to my response,
To something you rather accept.
And I hear your attempts,
To try to comvince others...
What it is I really meant!

'Why are you leaving? '

You asked me a question.
I answered it.
Now I take my exit.
To that do you also object?

'But I think your response,
Should be open to debate.'

First of all...
You approached me.
And the time given...
I did not hesitate.
You wanted to hear something you formulate.
Something in your mind you hoped I would find.
And I'm not wasting any more of my time...
To play a game of ping pong,
With someone who has yet to learn...
The reason or the effective use of the paddle.

And besides,
If I did decide to play...
It would be with someone,
Who had something meaningful to say.
And all you wish to do is to occupy space,
In the hopes someone will come forward...
To assist you in the use of it!

'Don't you think your point of view is a bit arrogant? '

That depends!
Is that your second question?
Or should I be seeking your permission to leave?
And neither question,
Do I seek from you an answer.
But I will give you the benefit...
To decide for yourself,
Which one eventually applies!
How is that?
Enjoy your day.

'You will not be asked back here again! '

Was I not already here when you entered?
Again...
Enjoy your day!

Xxx's And Ooo's (An American Girl)

Phone rings baby cries TV diet guru lies
Good mornin' honey
Go to work make up try to keep the balance up
Between love and money
She used to tie her hair up in ribbons and bows
Sign her letters with X's and O's
Got a picture of her Momma in heels and pearls
She's trying to make in her Daddy's world
An American girl
An American girl
Slow dance second chance Momma needs romance
And a live in maid
Fix the sink, mow the yard, really isn't all that hard
If you get paid
She used to tie her hair up in ribbons and bows
Sign her letters with X's and O's
Got a picture of her Momma in heels and pearls
She's trying to make in her Daddy's world
An American girl
An American girl
Well she's got her God and she's got good wine

Roll On

(chorus)
Roll on highway, roll on along
Roll on daddy till you get back home
Roll on family, roll on crew
Roll on momma like I asked you to do
And roll on eighteen-wheeler roll on (roll on)
Its monday morning, hes kissin momma goodbye
Hes up and gone with the sun
Daddy drives an eighteen-wheeler
And hes off on a midwest run
As three sad faces gather round momma
They ask her when daddys comin home
Daddy drives an eighteen-wheeler
And they sure miss him when hes gone (yeah they do)
Ah, but he calls them everynight and he tells them that he loves them
And he taught them this song to sing
(chorus)
Roll on highway, roll on along
Roll on daddy till ya get back home
Roll on family, roll on crew
Roll on momma like I asked you to do
And roll on eighteen-wheeler roll on (roll on)
Its wednesday evening, mommas waitin by the phone
It rings but its not his voice
Seems the highway patrol has found a jacknifed rig
In a snow bank in illinois
But the driver was missin and the search had been abandoned
For the weather had everything strong
And they had checked all the houses and local motels
When they had somemore news theyd call
And she told them when they found him to tell him that she loved him
And she hung up the phone singin
(chorus)
Roll on highway, roll on along
Roll on daddy till ya get back home
Roll on family, roll on crew
Roll on momma like I asked you to do
And roll on eighteen-wheeler roll on
Momma and the children will be waiting up all night long
Thinkin nothing but the words just comin
With the ringin of the telephone
Oh, but the man upstairs was listening
When momma asked him to bring daddy home
And when the call came in it was daddy on the other end
Askin her if she had been singin the song, singin
(chorus)
Roll on highway, roll on along
Roll on daddy till ya get back home
Roll on family, roll on crew
Roll on momma like I asked you to do
And roll on eighteen-wheeler
(chorus)
Roll on highway, roll on along

Roll on family, roll on crew

And roll on eighteen-wheeler roll on (roll on)

I Love The African Woman

I Love The African Woman
I love the African woman
Her golden eyes
Burnt by smoke yet remained pure
Her black hair
Burdened by loads yet remained long
I love the African woman
Her dark lips
Kissed and chewed by men, Black and White
Yet remained full and thick
Her tender breast
Fondled by hands, smooth and callous
Yet remained firm and tall
At her back great men slept
On her laps heroes were nursed
At the meeting of her thighs all men dream
Her feet, hardened and bruised
Yet she keep moving
With pride
With dignity
I love her African heart
I love her African passion
I love the African woman

Our First Born

[verse 1]
Now you made me the proudest daddy,
Girl Im at a loss for words,
Cant explain the feelings in me,
So proud when I heard,
That we were having a little baby,
Girl I couldnt wipe off my smile,
Heaven went and told the world,
That you were having my child,
Words cant explain it
[chorus]
Our first born
Its our first, its our first
Our first born,
Its our first little baby,
Come on, our first born,
Its our first, its our first,
Our first born,
Its our first little baby, cmon
[verse 2]
When you had it something went through me, and it hit my soul,
I had no control,
This little life was mine,
And Ill do anything to protect it,
I will never neglect it,
I will always stand right there,
Im the daddy, Im the father,
Now what that means,
I will always love and care for you always,
Come on just say it again,
Im the daddy, Im the father,
I just cant explain how I feel about our first
[chorus]
Im so proud that we share,
I am so proud that we share,
The most precious thing in the world,
That you could love and share,
Baby I love you,
Yes I do,
Baby do you feel me baby,
Do you hear me, do you hear me
[chorus]

Dreads

It's not a statement of defiance,
I wear my hair in dreads.
It's who I am...
And I'm proud to show them.
Naturally...
On my head!

I use to keep my hair short and faded...
Conservative in conformity!
To fit into a 'conscious' acceptance...
An unspoken, visual uniformity.
Believing to appear like everyone else...
Would bestow upon me,
A certain respected sense of self.

Having no clue it was 'me' I pursued!

It took me a while to realize,
From myself I ran and fled!
Then when I 'woke' up clear with understanding...
I still had concealed a truthfulness not revealed.
My hair is 'nappy'!
And when not cut,
It dreads!
Curling into 'naps'.
And feeling comfortable on my head.

How sweet the awakening...
To a wholesomeness fed!
Not to dred but to wear in pride.

It's not a statement of defiance,
I wear my hair in dreads.
It's who I am...
And I'm proud to show them.
Naturally...
On my head!
Dreadlocked.

And now that I feel,
My best of self can be expressed...
I see so many who are trapped in masquerades.
Doing their best to project...
What they feel someone else,
Will accept without protest!

And I am so happy I can live my life...
With a peace of mind I find at rest!
Knowing a simple thing like 'dreads'...
Exposes a complete identity I keep.
And makes me feel at my very best yet!
Instead.
Forgetting the 'me' who I thought I knew...
And having not one regret!
Not within my heart I thread.

Note:
Dedicated to those dreadlock wearers
who feel the gloriousness of being who they are!
And a deep kindred with 'Jah' The Supreme!
A strengthening of 'spirit' develops when one
becomes...'dread-headed'!

Please Daddy Don't Get Drunk This Christmas

Please Daddy don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't want to see my Momma cry
Please Daddy don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't want my Momma cry
Just last year when I was only seven
Now I'm almost eight, as you can see
You came home a quarter past eleven
And fell down underneath
our Christmas tree
Chorus
"Please Daddy don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't want to see my Momma cry
Please Daddy don't get drunk this Christmas
"Please Daddy don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't want to see my Momma cry
Please Daddy don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't want my Momma cry
"Please Daddy don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't want to see my Momma cry
Please Daddy don't get drunk this Christmas
I don't want my Momma cry
I don't want my Momma cry
Mama smiled and looked
Outside the window
She told me son
You better go upstairs Then you laughed and hollered
"Merry Christmas"
I turned around and saw
My Momma's tears
Chorus
No,I don't want to see my Momma cry

To Daddy

Momma never seemed to miss the finer things in life
If she did, she never did say so to daddy
She never wanted to be more than mother and a wife
If she did, she never did say so to daddy
The only things that seemed to be important in her life
Was to make our house a home and make us happy
Momma never wanted anymore than what she had
If she did, she never did say so to daddy
He often left her all alone
She didnt mind the stayin home
If she did, she never did say so to daddy
And she never missed the flowers
And the gifts he never gave her
If she did, she never did say so to daddy
Being took for granted was a thing that she accepted
And she didnt need those things to make her happy
She didnt even seem to notice
That he didnt kiss and hold her
If she did, she never did say so to daddy
Chorus:
One morning we awoke
Just to find the note
That momma carefully wrote
And left to daddy
And as he began to read it
Our ears could not believe it
The words that she had written there to daddy
She said our kids are old enough
And they dont need me very much
So Ive gone in search for love I need so badly
I have needed you so long
But I just cant keep holdin on
She never meant to come back home
If she did, she never did say so to daddy

Your Daddy's,
Little ray of sunshine,
That came into the world,
Your Daddy's,
Little rays of sunshine,
In the shape of a girl,
Your Daddy's,
Little ray of sunshine,
With a head full of curls,

Your Daddy's pride and joy,
Your Daddy's love,
His own flesh and blood,
Your happines,
And being part of him,
Makes him proud,
That you are his,
Little ray of sunshine,

The love that you both share,
No-one else on earth could,
You'll always be special,
In your Daddy's heart,

For you are,
His little ray of sunshine.

Nappy and Happy And Not Harried

I have never been 'black'.
Not midnight black.
Or even shown that,
At the crack of dawn.

I know that for a fact.
I would get up early to look.

And when I became African-American...
What happened to the West Indian part of me?
All I know is this,
Someone made an announcement...
And that part of my heritage,
Became a subdivision.
Like an urbanite separated...
From the others who surrounded,
In neighborhoods of suburban glee.

And when I wished to take all of that back,
To proclaim, in fact, I am indeed black...
It seems those who were lighter than I,
Wanted me to prove my loyalty too.
As if they had to approve...
My manner of speech,
And other things I chose to do.

I think they were trying to confuse me.
As confused as some of them appeared to be.

Sometimes when I did then reminisce,
The days of my youth I admit I missed...
I remember just being a 'Negro'.
And not have a concern...
On whose list I did not fit.
I was just 'Larry'...
Nappy and happy and not harried!

Barack Obama

It is claimed he is inexperienced.
It is claimed he is too young.
It is claimed he is of mixed heritage.
And his mother is white...
And his father is a native African son!
It is claimed he is intelligent.
A good father.
A husband with a black mate.
It is claimed he is honest.
It is claimed he is degreed.
It is claimed people love him.
And he is a Harvard graduate?

I 'hope' like hell these are not allegations...
Because he is perfect to lead this swill,
Out of the cesspool of sewage
That has been seeping for decades!
What is his name?

'Oh-Bula, Oh Bumba, OBala, Oh...?
Baracka...Bolaka?
Barack Obama!
Yes.
That's it I think!
I don't know exactly.
But someone from those Star Wars movies!
Your Majesty...
I believe our prayers will be answered.
He 'reeks' with truth.
You have to see it for yourself.
It's incredible.
AND...
He has the gall to have published,
For all...
His flaws and blemishes! '

OH REALLY?
You're kidding!
Someone affliated
With those George Lucas
And Steven Spielberg productions?
Someone appearing before us,
Without hidden agendas...
OR seductions?

Yes, yes!
Send him in immediately.
He is the 'chosen' One!
He will lead this 'Federation'!

Play the theme upon his entrance.
I want him to feel he has found a home!
We've got to 'sell' our new mission,
To the people.
They have been hungry for this guy!
Send him right in!
I can not believe this!
Someone who dares to expose himself...
Without disguise?
Send that guy in here.
Immediately!

The Question

Joy flows through my heart
As I think of the one question that put the grin on my face
As I think of how this will start
And as I feel my mind being covered in this happy lace

I think of the feeling I got when you asked me
When you asked me to be yours
I think of it and smile as so you can see

I feel my heart becoming full
I feel my mind screaming with joy
For now my life won’t be dull
As I think of how I can say “that’s my boy”

I remember the light that you put into my eyes
When I think of the feeling of love
I rember how I have entered the bliss and left the demise
And how my feelings rise above

I hear your name and now I can say “he’s mine”
And I can tell people how I feel
When someone asks how I am I can see more than fine
The love for you in my heart no one can steal

Mommy & Daddy

Ask your mommy and daddy, what happened to the indian?
How come theyre all living in places
With too much snow or too much sand?
Tell your mommy, I got a funny feeling deep inside of me
Ask your daddy, is it really as bad as people make it seem?
Wa ta tick it ta too too..
Ask your mommy why everybody swallows all those little pills
Ask your daddy why that soldier doesnt care who he kills
After theyve put you to sleep and tucked you safely down in your bed
Whisper, mommy and daddy would you rather that
I learned it from my friends, instead?
Do you think Im to young to know, to see, to feel, or hear
My questions need an answer or a vaccuum will appear
Dont be surprised if they turn and walk away
And tell your mommy and daddy that you love them anyway
That you love them anyway...
Give them a kiss
Love will set you free
Kings of emi
Mommy and daddy (alt.)
Ask your mommy and daddy, what happened to the indian?
Ask your mommy and daddy to tell you where you really came from
Then mommy and daddy will probably turn and quickly walk away
Then ask your mommy and daddy who really killed j.f.k
Wa ta tick it ta too too...
Ask your mommy if she really gets off on all her - all her pills
Ask your daddy, why doesnt that soldier care who he kills?
After theyve put you to sleep and tucked you safely down in your bed
Whisper mommy and daddy,
Would it matter if the bullet went through my head?
If it was my blood spilling on the kitchen floor
If it was my blood, mommy, would you care a little more?
Dont be surprised when they turn and start to cry
And tell your mommy and daddy, tell your mommy and daddy
Scream it to your mommy and daddy
Theyre living in a lie, a lie, a lie
Its all a lie, a lie, a lie
A lie, a lie...

Momma This Pain

As I lay in my bed
Fear takes over me
Wondering what could take hold of me

Momma i've cried
Momma i've laid
But this fear is pain

Not like any pain
The pain you feel when a womb can't heal
A pain you feel when you take a bad pill

Where no matter how hard you try to breath
It seem like nothing will work
I reach out

Trying to feel but I reach for air trying to breathe
Momma I'm scared please help me
But it seem like you're not listening to me

Momma this pain is worst than many
This pain is worst than any
It feels like I'm dyeing

I can't breath
I see your shadow help me as I try and talk
You smile instead, can't you see I can't walk

Momma can you hear me
Momma this pain
Momma this death feels like nothing

I feel free I have no feeling
I feel like I'm lifting air
So you feel it

Momma I feel no pain
Momma no pain, no pain
Momma I'm free, no more pain
