Feed the Pigeons

The subway rides thru fields of steel
The lost horizon shines over the sea
All these dreams walk like the desert
Go see the fortune telling tower
Speakers blare and call the cave dwellers
Town square fills with snake oil
Open the curtains and let the circus play
Repeat the same droll lines
Agents of the bold new age
Time slips into paved columns
In the distance night is coming
Feed the pigeons while their alive
Painted cement reflects the sun

The revolution is a whore
Songs and anthems sell cars
Everything is for sale
Deep under the sea symbols sink
Forgetfulness of the base
Dreams drift without color
Opaque sex dressed in silicone
Trampled on by the changelings
Merchants praise the unfettered beast
Eyes on the ceiling of the blue Bogotá
By the park she walks deep in thought
Bulletin boards decorated with happiness
Civil ceremony where loneliness wears violet

We meet amidst the fog that just won’t leave
Scale the slippery language past the system
Love is the awakening of sleeping forests
Buried in tribes calloused with centuries
Gravity pulls the spirit into the inquisition
Visceral expression on the canvass of a glance
We are the numb children of subliminal fortune
Novocain only lasts so long
Sit on the roof and watch the traffic roll
Grass between the sidewalk cracks
She hands me a note
Yes, I am alive
Lets go to a movie

Sirens howl like wild wolves
Streets prowl like hungry lions
Neon lights glow instead of stars
Costumes of red and gold
Children of the night come to play
All the great towers are lit with pride
Music from the strip clubs cry
We walk quietly watching the carnival
Vampires come out at midnight
Hookers and pimps
We head for the river
We sit on a park bench
I think she likes me, I hope so

In the bookstore there is a meadow
Hamlet reads about choices
Choices to sleep or fight
Orwell’s 1984 is such a sweet book
I think I’ll get it for her for Valentines Day
No, I better get her a box of chocolates
She smiles at me like she trusts me
Lets make a cozy corner and invent a new language
I know I need you but we need to stay awake
What do you mean?
It seems something is trying to control us
I think someone wants to steal our inward world
I believe we have a soul

We hold hands and go feed the pigeons

Bed of Ghosts

Red wolves under the purple moon
She sighs like the wet tide
I have entered a dark door
Parallax lace tubes of silk
Covered in her golden pain
Eyes like castles of strange stone
Walls as high as broken glass
Maybe awakenings are over
Maybe the end is just a mirror
Is love another passport to pain

Now the circus bells sound like thunder
Pigeons feed on park benches
She loves gargoyles on the old church
We walk shrouded in rain
Panhandlers amidst the saved
Gothic lights from a forest of gray
Her red 5-inch heels click the cement
Everyone in a role
Everyone caught like a bomb shelter
We wait for a libido of silk doom

True love like a frozen river
Time settles sand in valleys of sorrow
Childhood oaks with boughs of dreams
No refuge in the ancient masks
Old swings where children played
First friends with granite memories
Joy like a vague painting, a wish
We hold hands under the lost neon
We talk of a future that already is gone
Make love to the images of silver swords

She loves midnight when darkness plays
The romance of Ann Rice
Vampires with garter belts
Moons that seem to melt into whips
Actors of Eugene O’Neil
Tennessee Williams and Poe
Blues and jazz as sultry as eyeliner
We kiss like wild wolves
Lioness that prowls these streets
I lay on a bed of ghosts

Let It All Be Music

Music is a mirror
Near around my soul
Music is the spirit
Come on let it roll
Music is my nature
People have you heard
Music is my future
Music is the world
Let it all be music
People sing a song
Let it all be music
Let us sing it on and on and on and on
Lets play the music
My kind of music
Lets play the music
Play it on
Lets play the music
My kind of music
Lets play the music
Play it on and on and on
Music isnt somewhere
Music turns you right
Music is a fever
Leads you day and night
Music is like heaven
Where you wanna be
Music is religion
Music sets you free
Let it all be music
People sing a song
Let it all be music
Let us sing it on and on and on and on
Lets play the music
My kind of music
Lets play the music
Play it on
Lets play the music
My kind of music
Lets play the music
Play it on and on and on
Music is tomorrow
Music is today
Music is forever
Music is the way
Music is for women
Music is for men
Music is for children
Sing it all again
Let it all be music
People sing a song
Let it all be music
Let us sing it on and on and on and on
Lets play the music
My kind of music
Lets play the music
Play it on
Lets play the music
My kind of music
Lets play the music
Play it on and on and on
I can feel it, in my soul
I can feel it, in my heart
Sweet sweet sweet music
Music
Sweet sweet sweet music
Sweet music
Play it on

Lets Get Married

Weve been, going together
Too long to be vague
When theres something to say
If its not now, then its never
So Ill say it straight out
cos I have no doubt, no doubt
Lets get married
I love you and I want to stay with you
Lets get married
Have kids and grow old and grey with you
Lets get married
Hold hands, walk in the park
You can get a cat as long as it barks
We know, other people
Who drifted apart
Who broke each others hearts
But we aint other people
So well do things our way
Were gonna be o.k.
Were gonna be more than o.k.
Lets get married
Were ready for tying the knot
Lets get married
Set the seal on the feelings weve got
Lets get married
We can make each other happy or we can make each other blue
Yeah, its just a piece of paper but it says I love you
For the good times
For the days when we can do no wrong
For the moments when we think we cant go on
For the family
For the lives of the children that weve planned
Lets get married
Cmon darlin, please take my hand
And Ill be the one
Whos by your side
Ill be the one
Still taking pride
When were old if they ask me
How do you define succes?
Ill say,
You meet a woman
You fall in love
You ask her and
She says yes
Lets get married
I love and I want to stay with you
Lets get married
Have kids and grow old and grey with you
Lets get married
Hold hands when we walk in the park
All right you can get a cat just as lang as it barks
For the good times
For the days when we can do no wrong
For the bad times
For the moments when we think we cant go on
For the family
For the lives of the children that weve planned
Lets get married
Cmon darlin, please take my hand

The Zoo

Music :rudolf schenker
Lyrics:klaus meine
The job is done and I go out
Another boring day
I leave it all behind me now
So many worlds away
I meet my girl, shes dressed to kill
And all we gonna do
Is walk around to catch the thrill
On streets we call the zoo
We eat the night, we drink the time
Make our dreams come true
And hungry eyes are passing by
On streets we call the zoo
We eat the night, we drink the time
Make our dreams come true
And hungry eyes are passing by
On streets we call the zoo
Enjoy the zoo
And walk down 42nd street
You wanna be excited too
And you will feel the heat
We eat the night, we drink the time
Make our dreams come true
And hungry eyes are passing by
On streets we call the zoo
We eat the night, we drink the time
Make our dreams come true
And hungry eyes are passing by
On streets we call the zoo

Lotus Symphony

Gourds, seeds, sticks from the desert
Music with base beat deep in dharma
Mystical college, orient sun
Woven in stars amidst the lost world
Call to the tribes
All the ghost legions
Cobra dreams
Sacred waters
Waiting for the chaos to depart
Ashrams, swarthy swamis
Karma in centuries
The world of conflict
No random stars
Everything in phases of becoming
Transcendence
Every note a prayer
Every phrase relief
A flight
A reckoning
Random wind
Past the stage a soul
Music rises like a river
Lotus blossoms swirl amidst the stars

Night Life

Debra waitin on the corner
Flarin smile and darin style
Big g cruising, neon flashin
Lost and found
Tinsel town
Day time orphans join the circus
Climb the rope and walk
The wire
To feel the night and the
Music playing
Feed the fire
To feed the fire
Night life, only living for
The night life
Its the only kind of night life
I only come alive for night life
Couples coasting, singles
Searching
Loners lost among the crowd
Action turning on reaction
Lose up
Fool around
Pretzel vendor, first class
Spender
Limousine and ketchup dream
Pinball hall and roulette roller
Every scene
For everything
Night life, only livin for
The night life
Its the only kind of night life
I only come alive for night life
Night life, only livin for
The night life
Its the only kind of night life
I only come alive for night life
Night life, night life
Its the only kind of night life
I only come alive for night life
Night life,
Its the only kind of night life

A November Night

There! See the line of lights,
A chain of stars down either side the street --
Why can't you lift the chain and give it to me,
A necklace for my throat? I'd twist it round
And you could play with it. You smile at me
As though I were a little dreamy child
Behind whose eyes the fairies live. . . . And see,
The people on the street look up at us
All envious. We are a king and queen,
Our royal carriage is a motor bus,
We watch our subjects with a haughty joy. . . .
How still you are! Have you been hard at work
And are you tired to-night? It is so long
Since I have seen you -- four whole days, I think.
My heart is crowded full of foolish thoughts
Like early flowers in an April meadow,
And I must give them to you, all of them,
Before they fade. The people I have met,
The play I saw, the trivial, shifting things
That loom too big or shrink too little, shadows
That hurry, gesturing along a wall,
Haunting or gay -- and yet they all grow real
And take their proper size here in my heart
When you have seen them. . . . There's the Plaza now,
A lake of light! To-night it almost seems
That all the lights are gathered in your eyes,
Drawn somehow toward you. See the open park
Lying below us with a million lamps
Scattered in wise disorder like the stars.
We look down on them as God must look down
On constellations floating under Him
Tangled in clouds. . . . Come, then, and let us walk
Since we have reached the park. It is our garden,
All black and blossomless this winter night,
But we bring April with us, you and I;
We set the whole world on the trail of spring.
I think that every path we ever took
Has marked our footprints in mysterious fire,
Delicate gold that only fairies see.
When they wake up at dawn in hollow tree-trunks
And come out on the drowsy park, they look
Along the empty paths and say, "Oh, here
They went, and here, and here, and here! Come, see,
Here is their bench, take hands and let us dance
About it in a windy ring and make
A circle round it only they can cross
When they come back again!" . . . Look at the lake --
Do you remember how we watched the swans
That night in late October while they slept?
Swans must have stately dreams, I think. But now
The lake bears only thin reflected lights
That shake a little. How I long to take
One from the cold black water -- new-made gold
To give you in your hand! And see, and see,
There is a star, deep in the lake, a star!
Oh, dimmer than a pearl -- if you stoop down
Your hand could almost reach it up to me. . . .

There was a new frail yellow moon to-night --
I wish you could have had it for a cup
With stars like dew to fill it to the brim. . . .

How cold it is! Even the lights are cold;
They have put shawls of fog around them, see!
What if the air should grow so dimly white
That we would lose our way along the paths
Made new by walls of moving mist receding
The more we follow. . . . What a silver night!
That was our bench the time you said to me
The long new poem -- but how different now,
How eerie with the curtain of the fog
Making it strange to all the friendly trees!
There is no wind, and yet great curving scrolls
Carve themselves, ever changing, in the mist.
Walk on a little, let me stand here watching
To see you, too, grown strange to me and far. . . .
I used to wonder how the park would be
If one night we could have it all alone --
No lovers with close arm-encircled waists
To whisper and break in upon our dreams.
And now we have it! Every wish comes true!
We are alone now in a fleecy world;
Even the stars have gone. We two alone!

To me you are

To me you are the woman
that walks up and down
at the traffic light
and smiles almost shy,
when I look up
and still give a view
of her breasts

To me you are
the hunger and pain,
that I hear in the voices
of children in back streets
where they loose all courage.

To me you are
the crippled gum sniffing children,
that swing walk
with eyes without hope.

To me you are the vagrant,
that struggles along shuffling
and worries about the next
sleeping place and food
and smile without teeth
when he gets a few coins.

To me you are the beggar
who stands unobserved
at a busy traffic light,
while cars are streaming past
where nobody knows or comprehends
his despair.

To me you are the drug dealers
who hangs out in clubs
and look whom they can still catch,
with their contaminating
deadly poison.

To me you are the street thug,
that brakes car windows with bricks
and steal the valuables of people
and sell it at only a Rand or two.

To me you are the criminal
that steals cars in the streets
and are happy
with the despair,
that he is dealing out unscrupulous.

In reality you are the big city
that gives and takes,
where people live like termites
past each other
and rowed in,
as if others do not exist

To rather stay far away from it all
and to get rest and peace there
at times wants to take predominance,
but I love you
like a husband does his wife.

In you is where
some people still build dreams
and wish and live
and have an own place.

In you I see children
giving bread to birds
and people,
giving money to car guards.

In you are places
where people are making a living
and really help each other
and still I believe,
that in places in you
there are more good than evil.

Eat Your Heart Out

I've come by, she says, to tell you
that this is it. I'm not kidding, it's
over. this is it.
I sit on the couch watching her arrange
her long red hair before my bedroom
mirror.
she pulls her hair up and
piles it on top of her head-
she lets her eyes look at
my eyes-
then she drops her hair and
lets it fall down in front of her face.
we go to bed and I hold her
speechlessly from the back
my arm around her neck
I touch her wrists and hands
feel up to
her elbows
no further.
she gets up.
this is it, she says,
this will do. well,
I'm going.
I get up and walk her
to the door
just as she leaves
she says,
I want you to buy me
some high-heeled shoes
with tall thin spikes,
black high-heeled shoes.
no, I want them
red.
I watch her walk down the cement walk
under the trees
she walks all right and
as the pointsettas drip in the sun
I close the door.

Grace Sufficient

Golden fields praise the morning sun
Dreams rise in the cool calm day
Autumn winds blow crisp dried leaves
Blue sky shines and clouds play

November courts my imagination
Walk by the wise river flowing in light
Geese flock for their long journey south
Beauty amongst birch, oak and pine

The frosty glaze of night has melted
Many sea gulls still fish and feed
Green grass thrives on a sunny day
I walk in quiet with thoughts deep

Lately my dreams wake me with tears
So many people lonely and in pain
I miss so many friends that have left
Sometimes it all seems so vain

Why am I still here, my family gone?
Maybe God doesn't want to tell me?
Maybe the plan is revealed in living?
This bright morning shines with joy free

I look up, I know his grace is sufficient

No One

Hungry coral hearts lap the night
Recluse as a conch shell of dawn
Surrender to the crying tide
Moon as angry as patience
You never leave your self
Everything neatly packaged
The closed soul knows possession
Dry places they wonder
Your eyes have no Venus
Opulence is an excuse
Maybe suffering is better than valentines
Lust a New Orleans mask
Penetration into the viagra dream
Beauty is never control
Validation is never the circus
Compensation has no eternal gold
We hardly move
Clock hands tremble like cages
Anniversary of slow shadows
No one walks the halls
No one rides the subway
No one sleeps with you
Even the mirror reflects no one
No one becomes a pallbearer

Feed The Monkey

She likes to feed the monkey
She likes to feed the monkey
She likes to feed the monkey
She likes the monkey
Well gather 'round and let me tell you all a story
About a boy and his monkey
He's got that kind of monkey that the girls wanna know
He likes to take his monkey every place that he goes
(Can we pet your monkey?)
Hey, ho, you see the monkey?
Did you know you made my monkey hungry?
I didn't really know how it get so hungry
I'd like to know
Would you feed the monkey?
Well you can pet my monkey
'Cause my monkey don't bite
But when you pet my monkey
He get funky all night
My monkey ain't no ordinary orangutang
'Cause my monkey likes to do the wild thing
My monkey don't scratch
My monkey don't bite
My monkey don't swing no tree
My monkey don't hit
My monkey don't drool
My monkey be swing with me
My monkey don't freak
My monkey don't trip
My monkey don't wear no cape
But you can tell what my monkey wanna eat
'Cause it turn into a big ol' ape
Yeah...
Hey..
The monkey's getting hungry
Hey, hey, why don't you feed your monkey?
(REPEAT x 3)
What she want?
She wants the monkey
(REPEAT x 3)
You know she want
You know she want
You know she wants the monkey
(REPEAT x 3)
Hey, hey, she likes to feed the monkey
Ooh, she's sayin' it's time to feed the monkey
Everyday she wants to feed the monkey
All through the day she likes to feed the monkey
She likes to feed the monkey
(REPEAT x 7)
Feed the monkey
(REPEAT x 19)
She likes to feed the monkey

Lets Go!

(wang chung)
Meet me in a restaurant
Meet me on the top of the world
Meet me and well talk the language of love
Ill meet you anywhere you want
Ill meet you on a ballroom floor
Meet me and well float to a level above
Chorus:
I wish youd stop what youre doing
And get on the case
We could blow this existence
Right out into space
And share a sweet isolation
Lets go there today
Go today, go today
Everyway, right away
Oh, lets go
Lets go, baby, lets go, baby, come on
Lets go, baby, lets go, baby, come on
Lets go, baby, lets go, baby, come on
Lets go, cause we cant hold back no more
Theres no way, theres no way
No, no way
Meet you on a mountain-top
Ill meet you at the end of the block
As long as we can talk in the language of love
Ill take you in my arms again
Ill take you to the edge of time
Together we can reach for the heavens above
Repeat chorus
Lets go, baby, lets go, baby, come on
cause baby, I want your love
Lets go, baby, lets go, baby, come on
cause baby, Im saying
Take your cue from me now
Im saying baby, lets go
Will you listen to me
Im saying baby, come on now
Lets go cause we cant hold back no more
Theres no way
Meet me on the dancefloor and well dance to the rhythm
Get your feet in motion and well dance to the rhythm
Dance to the rhythm
Dance to the rhythm of love
Oh, baby
Lets go, baby, lets go, baby, come on
cause baby, I want your love
Lets go, baby, lets go, baby, come on
cause baby, Im saying
Take your cue from me now
Im saying baby, lets go
Will you listen to me
Im saying baby, come on now

Hollow

I sit alone at the edge
of a bench, watching the children
as they laugh
and play.
And they run past me
as I smile back and laugh
with their small voices
and wet hair in their eyes.
And they call me their friend,
as they see me often.
I often sit alone on that bench.
In the dust at the corner
of the sunlit park.
With a sagging tree
just over my head,
dappling my clothes
and shading my eyes
from the sun.
Until I stayed the night.
The sun was shooed
out of the sky
and the moon took
her shift.
The shadows grew longer
and the children left,
calling in the faeries.
They wanted me to dance.
I smiled and stood
in the center
of the pure Beauty.

In My Dreams

In My Dreams

Written by: Wilfred Mellers, Saturday, May 1,2010 @11: 08 AM

My dearest daughter

In my dreams we walk together

In my dreams we talk together

In my dreams we go to the park together

In my dreams we go to Subway together

I know how you like your tuna with honey muster on it

You introduced me to it and now that is the only way I’ll have it

I know how you love movies especially the scary ones

I take you to movies with your friends and we’d have popcorn and soda

We would go to the Shopping mall and I buy you whatever you liked

How you love those pretzels tots and lemon aid

We would wipe the salt off for it is just too salty

You loved wristbands so we’d buy some and some strange comic books

I’d ask you how your day was going and how is school

You always replied, “It’s okay. Everything is fine.”

You always like to keep it short and simple for some reason

I would take your hand and we would fly across the sky together

We were free as birds of a feather together

In my dream it’s just you and me

We are songs with four part harmonies

What I loved about you is that you were open to listening to my music as well

We would stroll through fields of flowers

You would pick one, just one and hand it to me

In my dreams we would go to the amusement park

You loved the ride that is a swing

You went on with a little boy for he was afraid to go on by himself

I thought that was so sweet your concern for others

I would hug you and tell you how beautiful you are

I would say to you that you are the most beautiful girl on the planet

You would reply “Stop. I’m not.”

I would say, “To me you are more beautiful than the blue sky.”

In my dreams just you and me

I would tell you how cars would stop and people would just look at you

In my dreams you still loved me

In my dreams you still do

Something Holy

Butterflies sail over entropy
Color moves in spheres of light
Transcendent circles spiral
Ancient warriors on quiet hillsides
They rest with morning
Feathers for war
There are armies coming to Jerusalem
Sleep you children of slaughter
Crushed in the onslaught of manifest destiny
Ghosts look upon the mountains
Weary history swirls in blood
Visions where sands of the sea rise

All these chains
Can you hear the thunder?
Invent another world where insanity is silent
There is something so wrong here
Hide in forests
Run for the shelter of pleasure
The rain of karma has found us
These tribes painted with vengeance
Dispersed into myth after their land was stolen
Visit their temples
Walk through the fields of burned villages
Resolution by the throne of eternal justice

Read the Grapes of Wrath
Read Faulkner
Read the Bible
Statesmen willing to die for true convictions
We need leaders not hirelings
So tired of politics
Scientists bought by corporations to back MONEY
Love thy neighbor as thy self is called socialism
Social justice is scorned
So much prejudice and blaming the victim
I have to walk everyday and see the river
See what God has made just to stay sane

All these flags are flying
All these banners and placards
Avarice, strife and hatred so disguised
Shakespeare said so much
Now Mother Nature is in pain
Species are dying
Land corrupted
No salvation in technology
No unity with all these banners and flags
Fear seems to speak on every street corner
Division like pirate ships sailing
The question arises IS IT TOO LATE?

Something to believe in
These children need real tears
Visit the memorials
Feel the young in their early graves
No summer
Spring flowers with dreams in the wind
Heed the call of love to give them something
Something noble beyond your country
Beyond silver and gold
Something untarnished
Something real and universal
Something Holy

If the children can’t see hope in the world
If leaders are letting them down
If schools and institutions are failing
Let them see love in us
Let them see hope in us
Let them see we are trying
If you’re a Christian don’t just wait for heaven
We are here to help until the day we go home
Lets strengthen the things that remain
Lets not just take care of our own
The least you do to one of these you do unto me
Lets let the love in our souls shine

Lets let the world know there is Something Holy

Let The Children Speak

Time - way out of line
A whole nation waits outside
The rhythm of tomorrow
They can dance away their sorrows tonight
Lost - broken and scarred
Prisoner waits outside with his lone heart beating
Let the children, let the children
Let the children, let the children speak
Let the children - let the children speak
Aims - dangerous games
Their mother says one false move and we all get hurt
I feel this sense of power I feel it every hour tonight
Lets not get lazy tonight
Things could get crazy cos
One more kick and the door cracks open
Let the children, let the children
Let the children, let the children speak
Let the children, let the children
Let the children, let the children
Power to the powerless strength unto the weak
Let the children, let the children
Let the children, let the children speak
Im begging you now let the children, let the children
Let the children, let the children
Power to the powerless, strength unto the weak
Let the children, let the children
Let the children, let the children speak
Lets not get lazy tonight
Things could get crazy cos
One last kick and the door cracks open
Let the children, let the children
Let the children, let the children speak
Power to the powerless, strength unto the weak
Let the children, let the children
Let the children, let the children speak
Things could get crazy tonight
Lets not get lazy cos
One last kick and the door cracks open
Let the children, let the children
Let the children, let the children speak
Im begging you now
Let the children, let the children
Let the children, let the children
Power to the powerless, strength unto the weak
Let the children, let the children
Let the children, let the children speak
The language of this world
Lets not get lazy cos

Dream Catcher

Ride purple stallions from the gold forest
We are going to find real answers
Rainbows shed their mellow glow
Love rides wings of sweet euphoria
Nothing lasts except the angels
Walk the sea slowly belonging to the stars

Axis spins like the eternal man
We felt things that night by the black light
When posters melted like flowers
Three dimensions seemed confined
Up and down the relative man
Now we are there and here but still here
Are you with me baby?
Free in the moving shadows of turquoise
See the cactus fill with sunrise

Red sun shines like the day Custer died
A pathetic human being
Out of the corner she rides fires
Warriors in the ghost world
We all are strange moons crying
We run like the rivers in the beginning
Come to me like star light, soft and sublime
Vibrations before the ships arrived
I enter into the old world

Someday peace will flow
Time will join all rivers
She brings me songs from the old world
Brilliant kisses made of hope
Kisses from the old world
Kisses from the new
Paintings of the future
Respite from the wild open love
Blue turquoise touch
Full circles of love
We slowly blend into one
Deep into a world that lasts

Dream catchers fill

Awakening

in the deep slumber, the echo of the night lives,
wondering the sweet experience of the past,
the lasting bastion of existence of the soul

a milk in the lips of the child, hold on the
breath of each day to survive, like lime of the
sweeten tongue of every lip quest its thirst
awake every deep sleep

sow then the fertile land of wheat, for
nothing would be hungry in the each stomach
that is full, uproot and lead every sweet
strengthen sweat that touches the ground nay,
lay not the hands to toil the land for death waits
no one in the grave

leave not to hold the closing eye the vision to
walk in the valley of tears, for only the presence
of the heart will tell where the night is falling
apart, in the dream that your eyes is open to close

just be there and hold me tight, the star is there
waiting to grasp the falling rainbow in your
eyes......

“ my deep and humble poem dedicated to the loving
People who waits their beloved one in their
Deep sleep “

Princeton, May, 1917

Here Freedom stood by slaughtered friend and foe,
And, ere the wrath paled or that sunset died,
Looked through the ages; then, with eyes aglow,
Laid them to wait that future, side by side.

(Lines for a monument to the American and British soldiers of the Revolutionary War who fell on the Princeton battlefield and were buried in one grave.)

Now lamp-lit gardens in the blue dusk shine
Through dogwood, red and white;
And round the gray quadrangles, line by line,
The windows fill with light,
Where Princeton calls to Magdalen, tower to tower,
Twin lanthorns of the law;
And those cream-white magnolia boughs embower
The halls of "Old Nassau."

The dark bronze tigers crouch on either side
Where redcoats used to pass;
And round the bird-loved house where Mercer died,
And violets dusk the grass,
By Stony Brook that ran so red of old,
But sings of friendship now,
To feed the old enemy's harvest fifty-fold
The green earth takes the plow.

Through this May night, if one great ghost should stray
With deep remembering eyes,
Where that old meadow of battle smiles away
Its blood-stained memories,
If Washington should walk, where friend and foe
Sleep and forget the past,
Be sure his unquenched heart would leap to know
Their souls are linked at last.

Be sure he walks, in shadowy buff and blue,
Where those dim lilacs wave.
He bends his head to bless, as dreams come true,
The promise of that grave;
Then, with a vaster hope than thought can scan,
Touching his ancient sword,
Prays for that mightier realm of God in man:
"Hasten thy kingdom, Lord.

"Land of our hope, land of the singing stars,
Type of the world to be,
The vision of a world set free from wars
Takes life, takes form from thee;
Where all the jarring nations of this earth,
Beneath the all-blessing sun,
Bring the new music of mankind to birth,
And make the whole world one."

And those old comrades rise around him there,
Old foemen, side by side,
With eyes like stars upon the brave night air,
And young as when they died,
To hear your bells, O beautiful Princeton towers,
Ring for the world's release.
They see you piercing like gray swords through flowers,
And smile, from souls at peace.
