Growing up in Greenock

The Broomy it was home to me
In a different time and place
My mind drifts back to long ago
And brings a smile upon my face

Bruno's chips and tick fae Pat
And lard from the butchers shop
The Broomhill Bar and tally vans
Which Bruno always tried to stop

Snowball fights in winter-time
And sledges racin doon the hill
And snowmen seen in every green
And extra socks to fight the chill

In summertime the days were long
We wandered far and we were free
To climb the hills and walk the cut
As long as we were hame for tea

Fitba games and soldiers too
And curby on the street
And tennis at the Mill St Park
And youth clubs where we would meet

Morton games and Morton rolls
And pies and Bovril too
The Cowshed boys and Dublin end
They all come into view

Drunken men with change for weans
And fights ootside the pub
Fish and chips and carry oots
Now where's the joy, ah there's the rub

Nick-names runnin through ma mind
Reminds me of so many friends
Some-how faded in the mists of time
When did our names come to an end?

There was Squid and Elmo, big Slim too
Snooper, Scally, Paw and Sire
Now all the names have ceased to be
In time these alias's retire

There was railroad tracks and chooky hens
And rope-works in dis-repair
Harry Friels and the Murdy dam
Ye dare not swim in there

The Mavy boys would come to fight
Brave men would hold the line
Carry oots up the Broomy park
And beer washed doon wi wine

We raided orchards, climbed for cheggy's
And always looked for old pram wheels
In darken cellers and scrapyards too
With watch-dogs snappin at oor heels

Only the bravest of the brave
Would race doon Mount Pleasant St
But that's where bravery was born
To survive was no mean feat

Golf baw divin up the Beezy
Only attempted when hot and breazy
And when a Strojan wid appear
We ran doon hills, laughin wi fear

Commando courses through the backs
Faces blackened in the night
Through Lemon, Lime and Pine St too
And the man would shout ' Go on ya wee shite'

A portion o chips bought wi bottles
Ah they never tasted so sweet
Around every corner they might be found
Lemonade bottles in the street

Chips for yer tea every night
With a quarter of spam, what a joke
And ma mother never fails to correct me
'It wisnae spam, it was chopped ham and pork'

And when asked for a raise for her keep
My sister replied with alarm
'Five extra pounds a week
For two extra slices of spam? '

And now we look through rose coloured glasses
At all our childhood days gone by
Days that are gone and lost forever
We look in the mirror and we give a sigh

But look again and shut your eyes
Can you hear the children play?
These days are gone, but in your heart
They're never very far away

Spam

Spam in the place where I live (ham and pork)
Think about nutrition, wonder whats inside it now (oh boy)
Spam in my luchbox at work (its the best)
Really makes a darn good sandwhich any way you slice it at all
If youre running low, go to the store
Carry some money to help you buy more
The tab is there to open the can
The can is there to hold in the spam
Oh, spam on the table at home (ham and pork)
Think about selection, are there different flavors now (lets eat)
Spam in my office at work (its the best)
Think about the stuff its made from, wonder if its mystery of meat
If you need a spoon, keep one around
Carry a thermose to help wash it down
Now, if theres some left, dont just throw it out
Use it for spackle or bathroom grout, now
Spam in my pantry at home (have some more)
Think of expiration, better read the lable (oh boy)
Spam breakfast, dinner, or lunch (its the best)
Think about how its been precooked, wonder if Ill just eat it cold
Now, once you start in, you cant put it down
Dont leave it sitting or itll turn brown
The key is going to open the tin
The tin is there to keep the spam in
Oh, spam (spam)
Ham and pork

Railroad Days

Jan would climb up so high on the foul screen
Down below I would yell to watch out
When we'd play ? was always the winner
He was brave never listened to me shout
Afternoons playin' ball by the old wall
Hidin' out and of course be the star
Kept my records in old looseleaf notebooks
And today I think I still know where they are
Oh, Railroad days
Railroad days
Railroad days
When I was young, in my prime
On my way
When the rain never got in my way
oh in my younger railroad days
Some nights, Drifters playin' on the hi-fi
Talkin' 'bout girls, or preposterous lies
Laughin hard, watchin' Soupy at eleven
Skonkin' down, one of Mom's lemon pies
Ten o'clock, bringin' groceries from the market
Singin songs, to the darkness of the night
Even sang the parts the instruments were playing
Life was freer, dreams were really quite all right
Oh, Railroad days
Railroad days
Railroad days
When the sun seemed to smile on it's way
When the darkness was easier to play yeah
oh in my younger railroad days
Yesterday, I heard they shut the trains down
The ones than ran, by the field where I would play
Said the folks want new and faster transportation
It's just like me, I'll be obsolete one day
Oh, Railroad days
Railroad days
Railroad days
When I was young, in my prime
On my way
When the rain never got in my way
oh in my younger railroad days

When I Was Small

When we were both small,
We'd go on trips out with our Dad.
I look back now and remember
The happy times that we had.

We'd drive to Harewood Forest,
To try and spot some fallow deer,
Or stroll to a nearby village,
Where my first cuckoo I did hear.

We'd often go to the local park,
For a cricket or a football game.
We'd also play in the playground,
On the swings and climbing frame.

We often went for bicycle rides:
Dad in the lead and us two behind.
We went blackberrying at Cowdown Lane,
And picked all the berries we could find.

We'd go for strolls along Ladies' Walk,
Collecting conkers in their shiny coats,
Or go to the local leisure centre,
And go for a ride there on a boat.

As a family, we'd also go further afield,
To various resorts along the South coast.
We'd have fish and chips and play on the beach,
And these were the days that I loved the most.

I really loved going for family picnics,
To the park in Salisbury or to Beacon Hill.
With sandwiches, sausage rolls, pork pies,
And cup cakes, our tummies we would fill.

It's nice to cast your mind back,
To those childhood days gone past.
They will never be forgotten.
The memories will always last.

Song - Monie a Smile, Monie a Tear

There’s monie a smile and monie a tear
On the mystery tour that brings us here
It’s monie a mile and monie a year
Since you and I sailed fae the crumbling stane pier
It’s time noo tae quit the ocean o’ dreams
Tae gan hame tae the village by the trees

And the wun was fair; we had followin’ seas
Your een were glowin and your heart was free
I lost myself in an whirlpool of words
In a world of hunger, egos and swords
I searched for a song to make it alright
Way back whun everything was black an’ white

And time was wi' us for monie a mile
When the starlight was bright and filled the night
Our hopes reached the sky, and strangers were friends
The waves weren’t breakers between us back then
When we were the morning, fresh as the breeze
Blowin’ oot fae the village by the trees

Noo the loch and glens, and the trees and the hills
The oul stane harbour, they’re all waiting still
And roon the ledges o’ galloway’s cliffs
There’s flocks o' herring gulls and razor bills
And doon by the surge at the Yellow Isle
There’s monie a curse and monie a smile

Or is this me back to the dreamin’ again
Oe'r the bridges of time consigned to flames
When kids fell in love by the oul village shop
And stole tender kisses doon by the White Loch
Tae set them aff doon the road that leads here
Windin’ far fae the village by the trees

Laura Days

Dreaming to-day in a forest green
Where the great gums rake the sky,
My thoughts turn back to another scene
And to old days, long gone by;
To a land of youth, and a youth's employ,
And - to filch another's phrase -
To the men who were boys, when I was a boy,
In the long gone Laura days.

To a little town that nestles down
By the hills of Beetaloo,
Where a youth dreamed dreams of fair renown,
And a man's ambition grew,
'Twas here his earliest songs were sung
And he won his earliest praise
From men who were young when he was young
In the long gone Laura days.

Spicer, Stockdale, Ballantyne,
Marrie, Mitchell and Braund;
How many a right good pal of mine
Has gone from that sunlit land.
How many a man, how many a lad,
Whose head now slowly greys,
To a song grew glad as I grew glad
In those long gone Laura days.

Susman, Sibly and Dr Cook,
Blume and Barrington,
Oh! the lives of some are a long-closed book,
But many a tale runs on.
Hollis and Harvey, Chandler, Green
Are gone their various ways,
But I see them all in the olden scene
Of the long gone Laura days.

I see them still, I see the town
Under those scrub-clad hills,
The shops where the quiet street runs down,
Wilson, Rowland, Bills.
Taylor, Weste, Felstead too,
Cole of the kindly ways,
And many other friends I knew
In the long gone Laura days.

And the names of some come slow to mind,
But the faces greet me clear,
And I hold them all as men most kind,
As I hold the old town dear;
And so in memory to the end
That old time picture stays,
For I see each face as a faithful friend
Of the far off Laura days.

To the ladies all I lift a glass,
And toast with a right good will,
Every matron, every lass, who
Shine in memory still,
Fair would I hymn them all in rhyme
With soaring song of praise,
Friends of mine from a golden time
In the long gone Laura days.

When the evening sun slants through the gums,
By my forest-rimmed abode,
Once more the old clear picture comes,
And my mind drifts down the road;
Back to the town by Beetaloo,
Where the Rocky River strays;
Back to the old kind friends I knew
In the dear dead Laura days.

Good To Yourself

I stopped at an all night diner
Ooh it seemed like a romantic thing to do
Yeah but Im lonely it aint like the movies
In the old days
I saw you sittin in the corner counting change
Like you were counting your daydreams
Then youe eyes they suddenly hit me like a railroad train
Oh sometimes I think I might be immune to a guy like you
But I cant walk away no I cant walk away
Oh tonight I see youre at the end of the line well me too
But we all gotta pay
I know youd be good to me
I know youd try to be good to me
But in the end baby cant depend on no one else
When the chips are down I have found
You better be good to yourself good to yourself
I guess Ive known you before maybe in high school
Or maybe youre just one more guy I went looking for
The boy next door
Or maybe Im the girl with the see through eyes
But I watch too many movies
I get tangled in the story of someone elses life
Baby who am I and who are you
Oh sometimes I go to bed at night
And I think that Im with you
Then I say a little prayer cuz I threw it all away
The other day you called up to see if I miss you
And all I could say was
I know youd be good to me
I know youd try to be good to me
But in the end baby cant depend on no one else
When the chips are down I have found
You better be good to yourself good to yourself
Night has a clever desguise
She makes me believe that Im lonely
I should know by now if I can make it to tomorrow
I can work it out
Cuz in the end baby cant depend on no one else
When the chips are down I have found
You better be good to yourself good to yourself

The Joy Of Their Laughter

The children are playing football in the park off of the street
The joy in their laughter it does sound so sweet
'Tis true youth is such a marvellous thing
Like the flowers of the fields that bloom lovely in Spring.

The joy of their laughter bring back memories to me
Of happy boyhood days of any cares free
In the Town park on Summer evenings we kicked the football
Such wonderful memories are good to recall

The years went so quickly and time did not wait
And I've grown grayer and slower and I'm putting on weight
The future belongs to the youth of today
Though they too will grow to learn that time quickly ticks away.

Some of those I went to school with now with the dead lay
And some are grand parents and their grand children play
The games they themselves played they run up and down
In pursuit of the football in the park by the Town.

As I walk to the bottle shop for to buy beer
The laughter of the children playing football I hear
Their best days approaching and mine in the past
But time keeps on ticking and nothing does last.

Down the Chippy

Tasty chips sizzling away
an aroma that can't be beat
'Salt and Vinegar Sir? '
what a tasty treat.
When we were little kids
going to the chippy was a delight
Fish n Chips once a week
usually on a Saturday Night.
The Chippy was on our road
you could smell Fish in the air
'can we have a bag of Scratchings'
a bit of spare Cod if we dare.
The Fish and Chip shop
as British as cups of Teas
who can resist a bag of chips
and some nice Mushy Peas?

Its Been A Long Long Time

Its been a long time...
Since I held you tight.
Its been a long time...
Everyday in this fight.
Its been a long...long...time.

Its been a long time...
Since I've had a kiss.
Its been a long time...
You're pretty blue eyes I miss.
Its been a long...long...time.

Its been a long time...
This Iraqi tour.
Its been a long time...
I miss you so and more.
Its been a long...long...time.

Its been a long time...
Hot days with freezing nights.
Its been a long time...
Sunburned face, mosquito bites.
Its been a long...long...time.

Its been a long time...
Had a real bad day.
Its been a long time...
Lost some soldiers today.
Its been a long...long...time.

Its been a long time...
I suffer everyday.
Its been a long time...
For me to be away.
Its been a long...long...time.

Its been a long time...
For me to be alone.
Its been a long time...
No talking on the telephone.
Its been a long...long...time.

Its been a long time...
Since you heard me say...
Baby, my sweet darling...
I'm leaving Iraq today!

Aye an a bit of mackeral settler rack and ruin
Ran it doon by the haim, ma place
Well I slapped me and I slapped it doon in the side
And I cried, cried, cried.
The fear a fallen down taken never back the raize and then craig marion,
Get out wi ye claymore out mi pocket a ran doon, doon the middin stain
Picking the fiery horde that was fallen around ma feet.
Never he cried, never shall it ye get me alive
Ye rotten hound of the burnie crew. well I snatched fer the blade o my

Aye! a roar he cried frae the bottom of his heart that I would nay fall
But as dead, dead as a can be by his feet; de ya ken?

Salad Days

Once upon a summertime In days now sadly past
We ran we played, a world of time, oh... that it should last

Without a care of busy times, so seldom seen again
We lived a world through child.s eyes... every day a game.

The summer sun our constant friend, forever it would seem,
The rainy days a faded part, of this our childhood dream

The throes of summers growing pains, now left so far behind
The smell of grass so freshly cut, stays etched upon our mind

The fields of grain that caught the wind and whispered such a tune
Of childish thoughts and innocence... they disappeared so soon.

Our friends that walked beside us, so perfect, like the games
Those memories forever ours, tho' time can lose their names

How we laughed and how we cried and yet we never knew
That these would be our salad days, so perfect yet so few...

My Little Princess

My Little Princess
Written by: Wilfred Mellers, Thursday, January 6,2011, @ 11: 33 AM

I just don’t know her any more
For my very heart and soul she tore
I thought that I would’ve been there to watch her grow older
I use to once carry her on my shoulder

She was so beautiful that she would stop traffic
She and I were cut from the same fabric
She was her own worst critic
Everything she took so drastic

A drama queen like most little girls
She was my very own string of pearls
How she hated when we’d walk from her school
To be seen with me now would be too uncool

Picked her up from school when she felt sick
Yes she was the outsider and the maverick
Never she was the prudent skeptic
Her smile were never plastic

Told her back then in herself to believe
I suppose I was foolish and somewhat naive
Days of old truly magic
She was my music and I the lyric

Christmas we’d eat Achee, salt fish, and with fried dumplings
Boiling Easter eggs and carving up pumpkins
Tuesdays were the days for fish and chips
Ketchup and Tatar sauce we used as dips

The day came so tragic
Lost her love for reasons defying logic
In a dream it came to me but I’m not psychic
So from there on she started to panic

She never fit into any click
She was always that outside chick
She once use to get so very carsick
She the beauty so classic

How sweet it was when she sang “Dreaming Of You”
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez and Shania Twain songs too
Each time I hear her voice as a baby I cried
Reaching out to her I’ve truly tried

When she was born I first held her in my arms
Sheltered and protected her from all life’s harms
How I long to hold her once again
So these words I commit to pen

Thinking back to way back when
I shed a tear again and again
I cannot rescue her from the pain
So I sit a cuss the rain

Even though I had lost her mother
In front of her I would never put another
I would have given her the world if I could
To erase her pain I’d give my life I would

Some fights you just can’t win
She will no longer let me in
God knows how long has it been
Yes I took one too many on the chin

So looking back on yesteryear
It all seems now so very clear
On me she can always depend
For her I would do it all over again

I'm On A Diet

Oh body what have you done
I always fed you
Washed you
What is the meaning of this

You wanted fish and chips
You wanted pies
KFC McDonalds you got it
How could you do it to me

I gave up smoking for you
Bought bigger clothes
Worked out at the gym
You just ignored me

You grew hair on my back
My girth causes mirth
All saggy and fat
Now see what you get

No more McDonalds
Fish and chips or pies
All vegies and fruit
See how you like that

Micro-kid

Pushing all the buttons
Trying to come to something
Flying with his feet on the ground
Full of dreams and visions
In a world of indecision
He aint around to be pushed around
Been a long time coming on - take a look at him now
And the days of if are gone - cause hes showing us how
Knowledge fuels the mind of the few
In a way that no - ones found
Brave new answers screaming the truth
And the techno wins the crown
Chorus
Micro-kid with mega-thoughts
He is real, he is here, he is fashionable
Micro-kid speaks digitalk
If you hear what he says its acceptable
Generating square waves
While computing new games
Finally gets the chips off his back
A smile is on his face
Erasing every trace
Of doubt that plagues the rest of the pack
And his brain stores memories - no alternatives could come in
Hes the living remedy - times are better than they were then
Knowledge fuels the mind of the few
In a way that no-ones found
Brave new answers screaming the truth
And the techno wins the crown

Helen and You and a Bag of Chips

After school
after tea
of bread and jam
a mug of tea

and a slice of cake
you met Helen
under the railway bridge
in Rockingham Street

and she was holding
Battered Betty her doll
in her arms
and she said

Betty wanted to come
she gets lonely
stuck at home
ok

you said
as long as she's quiet
and doesn't cry
all the time

she won't
Helen said
does your mum know
you're out?

you asked
of course
Helen replied
but she said

not to be late
or come home
in the dark
you'll be safe

I've got my six-shooter
with me
you said
tapping the toy gun

tucked in the belt
of your jeans
I told Mum
I was with you

and she said ok
I don't think
she'd let me out
otherwise

a train clattered
over the bridge
over head
let's go

you said
and the three of you
walked up and along by
the Trocadero cinema

she talking about
Battered Betty's day
and what Carmody
had said at school

and how he smelt
of B.O. and cabbages
you watched the people
passing along

the New Kent Road
a constant stream
passing back
and forth

and still Helen talked
as you walked
Carmody's just a fink
you said

take no notice
what he says
and she clutched your hand
with her free hand

not clutching the doll
and you both ran
across the road
and stood outside

the Odeon cinema
gazing at the still photos
in the frames
of what film was showing inside

don't fancy that
you said
too much kissing
and women crying

and boring men
what's wrong with kissing?
Helen asked
better than men

shooting guns
or riding horses
over yellow deserts
making women cry

you looked at her
with her large eyes
behind her thick lens glasses
watery as lakes

and her brown hair
plaited into two plaits
sure
you said

how about a bag of chips?
she nodded then said
I've got no money
don't worry my dad

gave me 6d
for polishing his shoes
the other day
you said

ok
she said
and you walked down
towards the Neptune fish shop

and asked for 6d of chips
and the man
with the one eye
scooped chips

into a bag
and you gave him
the money
and Helen sprinkled

salt and vinegar over them
and you both went outside
and stood together
and shared the bag of chips

and each chip tasted
hot and salty
and warmed your insides
and Helen kissed your cheek

with her greasy warm lips
and said
thank you for these
and you said

no problem
anything to please
and you felt
the damp kiss

there on your cheek
and you smiled
to yourself
thinking

I won't wash that off
for a week.

Faces & Names

Faces and names, I wish they were the same
Faces and names only cause trouble for me
Faces and names
If we all looked the same and we all had the same name
I wouldnt be jealous of you or you jealous of me
Faces and names
I always fall in love with someone who looks
The way I wish that I could be
Im always staring at someone who hurts
And the one they hurt is me
Faces and names, to me theyre all the same
If I looked like you and you looked like me
Thered be less trouble you see
Faces and names, I wish theyd go away
Id disappear into that wall and never talk
Talk, not talk
I wish I was a robot or a machine
Without a feeling or a thought
People who want to meet the name I have
Are always disappointed when they meet me
Faces and names, I wish they were the same
Faces and names only cause problems for me
Faces and names
Id rather be a hole in the wall
Looking out on the other side
Id rather look and listen, listen and not talk
To faces and names
If I had a breakdown when I was a kid
I lost my hair when I was young
If you dress older when youre not
As your really age you look the same
If we all looked the same, we wouldnt play these games
Me dressing for you and you dressing for me
Undressing for me
Faces and names, if they all were the same
You wouldnt be jealous of me or me jealous of you
Me jealous of you, me jealous of you

Bruno, Bruno
Where are you?
Are you scaling Batu Lawi?
Are you still up there on Batu Lawi?
Are you still with your
Beloved Borneo tribes?
Where are you Bruno?
Your family are waiting
Your friends are waiting
For you back in Basel
Missing you day and night
Your tribal comrades too
Are longing to see your
Courageous face again
Missing your inspiration
Bruno, Bruno
Are you really on the run?
Away from those
Who are on your heels?
Away from those
Who swear to put
You behind bars?
Away from those
Who wish to send
You back home?
Bruno, Bruno
You are brave
Your are adventurous
You are indomitable
In fighting for your beloved
Borneo brethrens
But Bruno, Bruno
It is a lost cause
Isn't it?
Is there a better
Way to stand up for them?
Is there a better
Way to stand up for them?
Bruno, Bruno
But where are you?
Are you still up there on Batu Lawi?
Are you still up there on Batu Lawi?

Everybodys On The Run

Everybodys on the run
By: jimmy buffett, marshall chapman, will jennings, michael utley
1985
I talk to more answering machines in a day, than I do to
People. nobodys home.
First time I ran was to the end of the block
But I didnt know then that it never would stop
Now I look around and what do I see
More and more people runnin faster than me
These days
Everybodys on the run
These days
Everybodys on the run
Well I fell in love for the very first time
But I couldnt keep up with that girl of mine
Night after night on a mighty fast track
She ran like the wind and she never looked back
These days
Everybodys on the run
These days
Everybodys on the run
-- spoken: lets run
These days
Everybodys on the run
These days
Everybodys on the run
Now Ive been to england and Ive been to france
I learned to love oysters and I know how to dance
Someday Ill die and come back again
As some little boy just-a runnin to win
These days
Everybodys on the run
These days
Everybodys on the run
Look in the mirror and what do I see
The gypsy and fool that I always will be
These days
Everybodys on the run
These days
Everybodys on the run
These days
Everybodys on the run
These days
Everybodys on the run

Children Playing

Children playing in the street
Dirty face and dirty feet
Skipping ropes and singing songs
This will last all summer long

Fresh air as there playing out
Keeps them fit as they run about
Games they play I know so well
As my journey back to my childhood dreams

Remembering the days no money about
All us kids just played out
Ancient games our parents would play
I still remember to this day

Skipping ropes tug of war
And playing tag I adored
Playing out from dawn to dusk
Happy were we school was done

Dinner time what did we care
With so many friends out there
Mum calls us in its getting late
And homely food on a plate

Slept like a log without a doubt
My energy all burnt out
Just what will tomorrow bring
Our gang is talking about building a swing

These pleasant days I remember well
Because many times in my childhood dwell
To see a smile on a Childs face
The world is a happier place

The Oddball In The Window

The boy sat at the window
Looking out at the other boys
Laughing and playing their games
Enjoying their childhood days

The boy hopes that they will cherish
Those blissful moments of youth
That have been stolen from him
Moments gone forever from his childhood days

He’s not crippled in body or mind
He’s not allowed outside to play
Those boys point and stare at the boy
They call the oddball in the window

His parents have imprisoned him
To wrap him up in cotton love
He is just to much a gift from god
He is their only precious child

The parents say it’s for his own good
He’s such a delicate child
He just sits at the window
Jealous of the children running free

He will never laugh with other children
He will never join in their games
He never smiles in photographs
He’s not enjoying his childhood days

He’s grown up now; still sitting at the window
His parents can’t get him to venture outside
Everyone passing takes time to point and stare
At the man they call
The oddball in the window
