Ashes on the Slide
When Jim and Bill and I were boys a many years ago,
How gayly did we use to hail the coming of the snow!
Our sleds, fresh painted red and with their runners round and bright,
Seemed to respond right briskly to our clamor of delight
As we dragged them up the slippery road that climbed the rugged hill
Where perched the old frame meetin'-house, so solemn-like and still.
Ah, coasting in those days--those good old days--was fun indeed!
Sleds at that time I 'd have you know were paragons of speed!
And if the hill got bare in spots, as hills will do, why then
We 'd haul on ice and snow to patch those bald spots up again;
But, oh! with what sad certainty our spirits would subside
When Deacon Frisbee sprinkled ashes where we used to slide!
The deacon he would roll his eyes and gnash his toothless gums,
And clear his skinny throat, and twirl his saintly, bony thumbs,
And tell you: 'When I wuz a boy, they taught me to eschew
The godless, ribald vanities which modern youth pursue!
The pathway that leads down to hell is slippery, straight, and wide;
And Satan lurks for prey where little boys are wont to slide!'
Now, he who ever in his life has been a little boy
Will not reprove me when he hears the language I employ
To stigmatize as wickedness the deacon's zealous spite
In interfering with the play wherein we found delight;
And so I say, with confidence, not unalloyed of pride:
'Gol durn the man who sprinkles ashes where the youngsters slide!'
But Deacon Frisbee long ago went to his lasting rest,
His money well invested in farm mortgages out West;
Bill, Jim, and I, no longer boys, have learned through years of strife
That the troubles of the little boy pursue the man through life;
That here and there along the course wherein we hoped to glide
Some envious hand has sprinkled ashes just to spoil our slide!
And that malicious, envious hand is not the deacon's now.
Grim, ruthless Fate, that evil sprite none other is than thou!
Riches and honors, peace and care come at thy beck and go;
The soul, elate with joy to-day, to-morrow writhes in woe;
And till a man has turned his face unto the wall and died,
He must expect to get his share of ashes on his slide!

Slide It In
You talk too much,
Never saying what's on your mind,
It's written on your face,
An' in the words you hide behind.
I know what you want,
I can see what you're looking for,
I know what you want from me,
An' I'm gonna give you more.
I'm gonna slide it in
Right to the top,
Slide it in,
I ain't never gonna stop.
Slide it in,
Right to the top,
I'm gonna slide it in, slide it in,
Slide it, in baby.
Sometimes you seem
Just like a stranger to me,
But, all the games you play
Make it so easy to see.
You're looking for love,
Tho' you try to deny,
The things you put me through
Tell me what I've got to do to you.
I'm gonna slide it in,
Right to the top,
Slide it in,
I ain't never gonna stop.
Slide it in,
Right to the top,
I'm gonna slide it in, slide it in.
(Solo)
You talk too much,
Always treating me so unkind,
I know what I've got to do,
To get me some peace of mind.
I'm gonna slide it in,
Right to the top,
Slide it in,

Slide it in,

Steppin In A Slide Zone
I took a ride in a limousine
I took a road Id never been
I met a stranger by the way
His coat was torn but his eyes were clear
Standing in a slide zone
I could be steppin in a slide zone
He told me where a river flows
He showed me how the apple grows
He told me of a magic stream
His face was worn but his eyes were clear
Standing in a slide zone
I could be steppin in a slide zone
Standing in a slide zone
I could be steppin through a time zone
He went to find a shooting star
Around the bend thats where they are
I went along just for the ride
Suddenly I began to glide
Standing in a slide zone
I could be steppin through a time zone
The air raced by there was no sound
We drifted high above the ground
And then said you know this place
And then a smile lit up his face
Standing in a slide zone
I could be steppin in a slide zone
Standing in a slide zone
I could be steppin through a time zone
I turned my head and looked below
And there was something there I know
Suddenly I began to fall
I looked around and tried to call
Standing in a slide zone
He had me steppin in a time zone
Standing in a slide zone
Falling through a time zone
Help me please I thought I said
Then something happened in my head
Music came from all around
And I knew what I had found
Standing in a slide zone
Falling through a time zone
Steppin in a slide zone
He had me falling through a time zone

Harvest Time
When the cranky German waggon,
With its ten or fifteen bag on
Comes a-jerkin’ and a-joltin’ down the dusty, limestone street,
And the “Norther’s” blowin’ blindin’,
And the rollers are a-grindin’,
And the agent jabs his sampler thro’ the sackin’ to the wheat,
Let ’em slide along the plank! slide along! slide along!
Sixty bushels for the Bank; slide along!
When your back is fairly breakin’
And your very fingers shakin’
With the heavin’, heavin’, heavin’, in the blarsted, blazin’ sun;
And the agent finds the spots out
And takes all his sample lots out
Where its rusty, pinched, or smutty—knockin’ off five pound a ton;
Sling ’em over with a jerk! slide along! slide along!
Sixty days of wasted work! slide along!
Sixty days a-ploughin’ mallee
In the God-forgotten valley
Of the creepin’, crawlin’ Murray, with the dingoes for your mates!
Sow and harrow, roll and reap it,
But you get no show to keep it,
For it’s “Boom and bust yer biler” when the cocky speculates!
Let the bankers take the lot: slide along! slide along!
Farmin’ mallee’s bloomin’ rot—slide along!

Slide Some Oil To Me
(charlie smalls)
Slide some oil to me
Let it trickle down my spine
If you dont have s.t.p.
Crisco will do just fine
Slide some to my elbows
And to my fingers if you would
Slide some oil to me, girl
Whoo! dont that feel good!
Slide some oil to my feet, look
I got toes again
Come on and slide some oil to my knees
And let me see if I can bend
Slide some oil to me
Im beginning to feel just fine
Slide some oil down my throat
And let me lubricate my mind
Slide some oil to me
Go ahead, hit my shoulder blades
Those who dont have to lubricate
Sure got it made
Slide some oil to me
Let it slip down my side
Laying there in one position
Sure does make me tired
Now watch me dance!
And let me lubricate my mind

Valuation
THE old Squire said, as he stood by his gate,
And his neighbor, the Deacon, went by,
'In spite of my bank stock and real estate,
You are better off, Deacon, than I.
'We're both growing old, and the end's drawing near,
You have less of this world to resign,
But in Heaven's appraisal your assets, I fear,
Will reckon up greater than mine.
'They say I am rich, but I'm feeling so poor,
I wish I could swap with you even
The pounds I have lived for and laid up in store
For the shillings and pence you have given.'
'Well, Squire,' said the Deacon, with shrewd
common sense,
While his eye had a twinkle of fun,
'Let your pounds take the way of my shillings
and pence,
And the thing can be easily done!'

Mud Slide Slim
Mud slide slim and the blue horizon
Oh, mud slide, Im dependent on you
I dont know but Ive been told
Theres a time from time to time
I cant eat, I cant sleep
But I just might move my feet
cause theres nothing like
The sound of sweet soul music
To change a young ladys mind
And theres nothing like a
Walk on down by the bayou
To leave the world behind
Mud slide Im depending upon you
Mister mud slide slim and the blue horizon
Ive been letting the time go by
Letting the time go by
Yes, Im letting the time go by
Letting the time go by
Im gonna cash in my hand and
Pick up on a piece of land
And build myself a cabin back in the woods
Lord, its there Im gonna stay
Until there comes a day
When this old world starts to changing for the good
Now the reason Im smiling is over on a island
On a hillside in the woods where I belong
I wanna thank jimmy, jimmy, john, nick and laurie
The no jets construction for setting
Me down a homestead on the farm
Mud slide, Im depending upon you
Mister mud slide slim and the blue horizon

Under My Skin
(john farrar)
Every night when youre as mean
As a ladder with a broken wrung
When I know youre sorry wont make it
From your heart to your tongue
There are nights when you keep pushing me
And I wont go on
cause when I get mad enough darlin
I will be standing my ground
But on a night like this I know I cant win
I know my soul will burn and blister
When you slide your silky whisper under my skin, oh, under my skin
When you slide your silky whisper under my skin
There are nights when every kiss
Is an order than I can obey
And I can taste the life comin
From a mile away
There are nights when you keep holdin me
But your arms are too tight
And I dont need what I want
cause what I want just dont feel right
But on a night like this I know I cant win
I know my soul will burn and blister
When you slide your silky whisper under my skin, oh, under my skin
When you slide your silky whisper under my skin
Everywhere that I go I hear your name
Spoken in whispers, spoken in shame
In shame
But on a night like this I know I cant win
I know my soul will burn and blister
When you slide your silky whisper under my skin, yeah, under my skin
Come and slide your whisper under my skin
Come and slide your whisper under my skin
Under my skin, ooh under my skin
Come and slide your whisper (under my skin)

Hogtied
Separate your heart from your soul, can you?
Liberate your mind from your form, would you?
Would you like to be thrown to the wind, ashes to ashes?
Or buried with the worms, dirt to dirt?
Perhaps burnt upon the stake, hogtied in agony, bound
or set out upon emotion, to drowned beneath the waves.
You know your love it's your saving grace, locate it if you can
is it the left half of my chest, does it lie within the palm of my hand?
Its mine to give, my life to live, my choice to forgive, to forget
would you let it slide?
Could you?
Should I?

Them & Us
One finger on the button
One finger up his nose
Johnnys in some cornfield
The early warning blows
Bigger is better
More is more
Look up, america!
Gonna even up the score
Get ready boys
Third times a charm
Dont need no sweater
Its gonna keep you warm
If we cant have the ball, there wont be any winner
This time
Them and us
Them and us
Ashes to ashes
Dust to dust
If forty-five minutes
Itll all be done
Well all be good and crispy
But well still be number one
And if things go from bad to worse
We can still kill them if they kill us first
If we cant have the ball, there wont be any winner
This time
Hell-bent
Heaven sent
It all got started by an accident
If we cant have the ball, there wont be any winner
This time
Them and us
Them and us
Ashes to ashes
Dust to dust
Them and us
Them and us
Ashes to ashes
Dust to dust

Amazing Sights of Mt.Buller(near Aussie Melbourne))
As we reached the Horse Hill
amazing sights of snow-falls,
our searching eyes, filled.
The old and the kids
slide down in snowboards
on a small stretch of slopes.
Wonderful feasts of Nature
we enjoyed at Mt.Buller.
From the bottom of the snow-clad vale
I moved up in my snow walking boots.
In that awesome sunny day
my boots sank a bit in some places.
But the boys give the snow a good boot
catch the ice crystals and shoot them off.
Icicles hang from the roof-tops
of the restaurants, clinics and sheds.
On the branches of dead trees
snowy pythons are lying on them.
The children practise skiing
but the youths slide fast on the slopes,
swerve around and make ski-jumps off
on the thick layer of ice.
There was no bleak weather
to stop the old from sunning
by sitting on the icy terrain.
The skiers go to the top in ski-lifts
and skid down the hill in thrilling speed.
The skidded skiers are rushed to clinics.
The lovers get wet in the flakes of snow
by throwing handfuls of it on each other.
The cameras could take rest
only if the internal memory is full.
The sun glasses-wearing jolly fellows
walk over the snowline,
see the snow-capped peaks afar
and chase each other running on it.
Marvellous sights of parallel snowy roads
while climbing down were spectacles of beauty.

Old Cambridge
AND can it be you've found a place
Within this consecrated space,
That makes so fine a show,
For one of Rip Van Winkle's race?
And is it really so?
Who wants an old receipted bill?
Who fishes in the Frog-pond still?
Who digs last year's potato hill?--
That's what he'd like to know!
And were it any spot on earth
Save this dear home that gave him birth
Some scores of years ago,
He had not come to spoil your mirth
And chill your festive glow;
But round his baby-nest he strays,
With tearful eye the scene surveys,
His heart unchanged by changing days,
That's what he'd have you know.
Can you whose eyes not yet are dim
Live o'er the buried past with him,
And see the roses blow
When white-haired men were Joe and Jim
Untouched by winter's snow?
Or roll the years back one by one
As Judah's monarch backed the sun,
And see the century just begun?--
That's what he'd like to know!
I come, but as the swallow dips,
Just touching with her feather-tips
The shining wave below,
To sit with pleasure-murmuring lips
And listen to the flow
Of Elmwood's sparkling Hippocrene,
To tread once more my native green,
To sigh unheard, to smile unseen,--
That's what I'd have you know.
But since the common lot I've shared
(We all are sitting 'unprepared,'
Like culprits in a row,
Whose heads are down, whose necks are bared
To wait the headsman's blow),
I'd like to shift my task to you,
By asking just a thing or two
About the good old times I knew,--
Here's what I want to know.
The yellow meetin' house--can you tell
Just where it stood before it fell
Prey of the vandal foe,--
Our dear old temple, loved so well,
By ruthless hands laid low?
Where, tell me, was the Deacon's pew?
Whose hair was braided in a queue?
(For there were pig-tails not a few,)--
That's what I'd like to know.
The bell--can you recall its clang?
And how the seats would slam and bang?
The voices high and low?
The basso's trump before he sang?
The viol and its bow?
Where was it old Judge Winthrop sat?
Who wore the last three-cornered hat?
Was Israel Porter lean or fat?--
That's what I'd like to know.
Tell where the market used to be
That stood beside the murdered tree?
Whose dog to church would go?
Old Marcus Reemie, who was he?
Who were the brothers Snow?
Does not your memory slightly fail
About that great September gale?--
Whereof one told a moving tale,
As Cambridge boys should know.
When Cambridge was a simple town,
Say just when Deacon William Brown
(Last door in yonder row),
For honest silver counted down,
His groceries would bestow?--
For those were days when money meant
Something that jingled as you went,--
No hybrid like the nickel cent,
I'd have you all to know,
But quarter, ninepence, pistareen,
And fourpence hapennies in between,
All metal fit to show,
Instead of rags in stagnant green,
The scum of debts we owe;
How sad to think such stuff should be
Our Wendell's cure-all recipe,--
Not Wendell H., but Wendell P.,--
The one you all must know!
I question--but you answer not--
Dear me! and have I quite forgot
How fivescore years ago,
Just on this very blessed spot,
The summer leaves below,
Before his homespun ranks arrayed
In green New England's elmbough shade
The great Virginian drew the blade
King George full soon should know!
O George the Third! you found it true
Our George was more than double you,
For nature made him so.
Not much an empire's crown can do
If brains are scant and slow,--
Ah, not like that his laurel crown
Whose presence gilded with renown
Our brave old Academic town,
As all her children know!
So here we meet with loud acclaim
To tell mankind that here he came,
With hearts that throb and glow;
Ours is a portion of his fame
Our trumpets needs must blow!
On yonder hill the Lion fell,
But here was chipped the eagle's shell,--
That little hatchet did it well,
As all the world shall know!

Let It Slide
Dreary Memphis city night,
Dark like a Kennedy's veil,
Shaky like them motorcycle lights,
Leading all them angels at hell,
I gave out my very last dime,
Laid out the bartenders all in a line,
We weren't fighting, we just drank 'em out of time,
Down at Printer's Alley,
[Chorus]
So let the poets be poets and the cops just give us a ride,
We ain't worried about your hands of time,
Just let it slide,
And let it slide,
You know Elvis said only two things were certain Hookers and Coupe Devilles,
Messing with that old boy down at the pool hall surely get your young ass killed,
I'm too tired for fighting,
I'd rather wear myself out with a smile,
We'll stay up with some good bar stores,
Beat up time for a while,
[Chorus]
So let the poets be poets and the cops just give us a ride,
We ain't worried about your hands of time,
Just let it slide,
And let it slide,
Oh you know it's nights like these,
I get down on my knees,
And pray the Lord the sun won't shine,
'Till I'm done having my big time,
[Chorus]
So let the poets be poets and the cops just give us a ride,
We ain't worried about your hands of time,
Just let it slide,
And let it slide.

The Winter Wonderland
The fresh crisp snow crunched under my feet as I stepped out into the snow
A Winter Wonderland
The snowflakes dance and dazzle around me as I start running
A Winter Wonderland
I grab my sled and slide down the hill
A Winter Wonderland
Suddenly my sled goes berserk
And I crash down at the bottom
I lay down on the snow for quite some time
Quite some time
Later in the day the girl found me
Her cheeks bright and warm, and eyes shining
She took me into her house, and fixed me up
My parents have been very worried
Very worried
But now I'm well enough
Well Enough
To go home
Home
And to get out and play in
Play in
The Winter Wonderland
Narcolepsy
Im on a train, but theres no one at the helm
And theres a demon in my brain
Who starts to overwhelm whelm whelm whelm whelm
And there it goes, my last chance for peace
You lay me down, but I get no release
And I say i, I try to keep awake
I try to swim beneath
I try to keep awake
But i, I can feel this narcolepsy slide
Into another nightmare
And theres a demon in my head who starts to play
A nightmare tape loop of what went wrong yesterday
And I hold my breath till its more than I can take
And I close my eyes and dream that Im awake
I try to keep awake
I try to keep awake
I try to keep awake
But i, I can feel this narcolepsy slide
Into another nightmare
I read dead russian authors volumes at a time
I write everything down except whats on my mind
Cause my greatest fear is that sucking sound
And then I know that Ill never get back out
And theres a bone in my hand that connects to a drink
In a crowded room where the glasses clink
And Ill buy you a beer and well drink it deep
Because that keeps me from falling asleep I said
Howd you like to be alone and drowning
Howd you like to be alone and drowning
Howd you like to be alone and drowning
Howd you like to be alone and drowning
Still I find this narcolepsy slide slide
Into another nightmare
Keep awake, keep awake, keep awake
And I can feel this narcolepsy slide

The mystery and the misery of a phoenix
We saw a beautiful bird flew from a stream;
Just a moment ago she was drenched in ashes,
Because she was formed from ashes and wind-
Ashes that resulted from the sacrifice of her parent.
Her aged mother fed up with life, set herself ablaze;
After several years in planet earth she'll have to go;
She needed a companion but nature denied her one;
She could only have one after she's turned to ashes.

Pierre The Penquin
'I have just been swimming to catch my fish. I have 3, I love fish it is absolutely delicious, I don’t want them cooked, I can’t see the sense in that, I will eat them raw one by one and savor every bite. They are cold and slippery to slide down my throat. I will eat my fish first, then I might go for another swim, or I might go for a snooze for a while.'
Who knows?
Pierre the penguin has just been swimming,
to catch his evening meal.
He does not need a boat for this,
or a rod or reel.
He can swim very fast,
and catch his fish quite easily.
Pierre is well equipped for this,
has you all can see.
He has a flipper on each leg,
that makes him very strong.
So, when he goes swimming,
he can stay out there quite long.
The fish are cold and slippery,
to slide down Pierre's throat.
The oil in the fish,
gives Pierre his lovely coat.
After his meal,
he might go for another swim,
or he might go for a snooze.
Which one do you think,
Pierre, should really choose?

We Got Too Much
Writer Dolly Parton
From Album Real Love
We got too much of a good thing goin'
We got too much to let it slide
We got too much of a feelin' flowing
We got too much, got too much to let it die
Whatcha try'n to tell me, boy?
Whatcha try'n to do to me?
You know you're my pride and joy
Don't leave me now, don't leave me now
Around you my world revolves
Its a problem we can solve
Can it really be so involved we can't work it out?
We'll work it out
'Cause we got too much of a good thing goin'
We got too much to let it slide
Yeah we got too much of a feelin' flowing
We got too much, got too much to let it die
Won't you talk to me tonight?
Let me hold you and love you right
Nobody's gonna know those eyes
The way I do, I do know you
Maybe she's your fantasy
She can't love you more than me
Just touch me and you will see
You're forever mine, forever mine
'Cause we got too much of a good thing goin'
We got too much to let it slide
Yeah we got too much of a feelin' flowing
We got too much, got too much to let it die
Tell me what it is you want, what it is you need
What it is that I ain't that I should be
I'll play your games, I'll be your fool
If you want me to learn, then take me to school
Maybe I'll show you
We got too much of a good thing goin'
We got too much to let it slide
Yeah we got too much of a feelin' flowing
We got too much, got too much to let it die
Yeah we got too much, we got too much
We got too much, we got too much
We got too much, we got too much
We got too much, got too much to let it die
We got too much of a good thing goin'
We got too much to let it slide
