A Moment Lived!

what if we just closed
the history books,
and you placed your hand in mine?
what if we walked away
from the stink of gunpowder,
would they know that we were gone?
what if we gave what we owned,
however small,
to the homeless and the hungry?
what if we shared a cup of coffee,
and took a long walk in the evening rain?
what if we laughed and listened,
and drank in the stillness?
would it be such a crime?
what if we made love
beneath that old willow,
and the star light covered us
with a moment lived?

Seek and Thou Shall Find

I stopped to ask this young woman for directions,
she hesitated then said, “Now let me see”.
Her voice was clear, soft and gentle,
and she smiled politely at me.

The directions she gave me were complicated,
but as it happened she lived close by the place,
so she said she would walk so far with me
and as I said thank you, another smile lit up her face.

Our talking passed the time away very quickly
and she said, “This is as far as I go.”
She then asked if I had got time for a coffee
and I said, “How could I possibly say no.”

We talked as we walked up to her apartment,
and coffee was my only intent.
We talked and drank coffee until after midnight,
but then our hands touched by accident.

Our fingers searched out for each other’s
and we kissed as our hands held tight.
Our hands then touched each others body’s
and we knew I would be staying the night.

We were both trembling with excitement
and kissed as our clothes fell to the floor.
We caressed and kissed each other all over
and made love again and again, and once more.

We both collapsed and fell asleep on the carpet,
and were awakened by the morning light.
Once again we covered each other with kisses
and made love until the sun shone bright.

I never did get to the place I was searching,
but I did find true love on the way.
We decided to live together
and I’m moving in today.

How Far We Have Fallen!

my ancestors walked barefoot,
followed the herds,
danced in the firelight....

played instruments made by hand,
prayed to the god of wind and rain....
made love in the moonlight....

owned nothing, owned by no one....
how far we have fallen,
how long the journey home!

You Laughed and Laughed and Laughed

I told you I was in love,
But you laughed and
Laughed and laughed.
.
I gave you my love,
But you did not give me yours,
Instead you kept mine, and
Gave yours to another.
.
You laughed at my song,
You laughed at my walk,
Then I danced my magic dance
to the rhythm of the talking
drums pleading.
.
But you shot your eyes, and laughed
And laughed and laughed.

Always Walk In The Rain With Me

Always walk in the rain with me,
Hold my hand tight so I don’t fall,
I’m so scared of slipping away,

Always walk in the rain with me.
Dance with me held close,
So I can see another days light,

Always walk in the rain with me,
For the drops are becoming heavy,
And the storm is becoming enraged,

Always walk in the rain with me,
Shield me from the man in black,
Don’t let his winds take me away,

Always walk in the rain with me,
Help me see my way,
Need my list fulfilled for time is at hand,

Always walk in the rain with me,
Stay with me for eternity,
Help me dance my way clear,

Always walk in the rain with me,
Promise to love me forever,
Guide me to my rainbow now,

Always walk in the rain with me,
Tell me your heart n soul are mine,

Always walk in the rain with me

The Peach

Mamma gave us a single peach,
She shared it among seven;
Now you may think that unto each
But a small piece was given.

Yet though each share was very small,
We owned when it was eaten,
Being so little for us all
Did its fine flavour heighten.

The tear was in our parent's eye,
It seemed quite out of season;
When we asked wherefore she did cry,
She thus explained the reason:-

'The cause, my children, I may say,
Was joy, and not dejection;
The peach, which made you all so gay,
Gave rise to this reflection:

'It's many a mother's lot to share,
Seven hungry children viewing,
A morsel of the coarsest fare,
As I this peach was doing.'

The light
Came closer
Lived right
Next to me

I walked with it
Sometimes,
Sometimes it
Walked with me
When I walked not
With it
And made me be
When I was not.

Living In

The light it entered in
And lived inside of me
I lived in it,
Sometimes,
Sometimes it lived in me
When I lived not in it
And made me be
When I was not

Abiding In

I hold the light sometimes,
Sometimes the light holds me.
Until I reach the light
I live in mystery

What happened to the lovely woman

What happened to the lovely woman
that every night
I wanted to hold against me
and where is she now

and is there still wind
blowing through her long autumn hair
on the porch
and are her fingers still busy

paging through poetry books
and do her soft sent still hang
on the evening wind
fresh like spring rain

at times it feels as if you fade away
and our love wants to take
another course
and maybe it was only a dream,
but from it
I never want to wake
and every moment it becomes more real

and I know that it’s not past
when you bring me a cup of coffee
and we look at doves
and other birds,
that prettily coos and sings
while they pick up seed
and I feel your hot hand
pressing mine full of love
and I know where you are
and how happy
this dreamer really is.

A Song of Wrong [ You Laughed and Laughed and Laughed ]

In your eyes
My song is one of wrong
Intruding into your heart
And you laughed and
Laughed and laughed.
.
In your heart, you knew
I could be there,
Cause you brought me here.
And you laughed and
Laughed and laughed.
.
In your soul,
You knew I want you
In my home.
'cause you brought me hope.
And you laughed and
Laughed and laughed.
.
You laughed at my wrong
You laughed at my right.
You laughed over
Everything I do.
.
And now, my love I give to you
But you shut your eyes and
Laughed and laughed
And laughed.
.
You laughed at my walk
You laughed at my song.
.
You walked your walk
Into my life of wrong
Knowing all along
You could change me in all.
.
But you shot your heart
To my love
And you walked away from
My heart, and you laughed
And laughed and laughed.

On Tuesdays

On Tuesdays Max visited
A dame a few blocks
Away with the mutt that
Seemed to bark all day.
He went because he liked
The way she made coffee
And always offered him
Toast or cake and because
She was blind and had the
Most useless mutt for the
Blind in the whole world.

On Tuesdays she opened
Her door to him; let him
In to her world and made
Him coffee and offered him
Toast or cake and listened as
He spoke and told her jokes
And related the latest gossip.

On Tuesdays he listened as
She spoke of her youth, of her
Days of being a beauty, of the
Day she lost her sight, how she
Coped in her world of darkness.

On Tuesdays he took her for a
Walk to a local restaurant and
They dined and ate and drank
And she listened to the people
Talking around her and to Max
Who recited a new poem he’d
Written or she just sat listening
To the traffic pass by wondering
If there were white puffy clouds
Above and what the colour the sky.

On Tuesdays Max walked her home
After lunch and they undressed and
Had sex and smoked and lay on the
Bed, he gazing at her beauty and she
Glad to be living and stroking his head.

Stillness Wrapped, Unwrapped!

stillness wrapped...
layers and layers of sound,
sound defined by color, sweat,
stink, breath, and desire...

i walk the great plains of night,
the hunter, and the hunted.
i kneel in the shadow of a star,
giving praise to the Great Mother!

i am wings of bat,
the eyes of the great owl.
i am wolf urine on the grasses.
i am bark and bay and howl.

i am the flute of the whipporwill,
the shallow breathing of the mountain aroused.
the small black boy in Mississippi past,
staring hard at the walls of angry cant.

i am the political prisoner,
the religious heretic.
i am the murderer repentent,
the one who kills him.

i am the quiet drunk
alone at the corner table.
the book hidden in in coat
that cant stop the bullet.

i am the old woman hungry
for a lovers touch...
i am the touch, the memory,
the coming and breaking.

i am the prodigal, the refugee,
the starving girl who gives
her last piece of bread
to her younger brother.

i am the stray dog, the abandoned house,
the fire, and the homeless man who died.
i am the grave, the gravedigger,
the preacher, and the epitaph....

i am nothing now....
but stillness unwarpped by time...
sound, color, sweat, stink,
breath, and desire....

ashes, and unplowed earth!

Angel of Love

One day I felt the angel's hand
Brushing my cheeks, on a slow train
Watching the long-lived trees pass by
And homeless men out in the rain.

The many years sped down the line
She whispered small words that she gave
I knew she was a love divine
For any mortal would have stayed

And had much more to say; and now
She makes my wings lighter to bear
My spirit sheltered in this life
By certainty that she is there.

The angel's presence strays so far
By time and distance measuring
Until her light falls by my hands
And leads me to its treasuring.

Willow, Willow, Willow

A poore soule sat sighing under a sicamore tree;
O willow, willow, willow!
With his hand on his bosom, his head on his knee:
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow shall be my garland.

He sigh'd in his singing, and after each grone,
Come willow, willow, willow!
Come willow, willow, willow!
'I am dead to all pleasure, my true-love is gone.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow shall be may garland.

'My love she is turned; untrue she doth prove;
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
She renders me nothing but hate for my love.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the grene willow, &c.

'O pitty me' (cried he), 'ye lovers each one;
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Her heart's hard as marble; she rues not my mone.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.'

The cold streams ran by him, his eyes wept apace;
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
The salt tears fell from him, which drowned his face.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

The mute birds sate by him, made tame by his mones;
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
The salt tears fell from him, which softened the stones.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow shall be my garland!

'Let nobody blame me, her scornes I do prove;
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
She was borne to be faire; I, to die for her love.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'O that beauty should harbour a heart that's so hard!
Sing willow, willow, willow!
Sing willow, willow, willow!
My true love rejecting without all regard.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'Let love no more boast him in palace or bower;
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
For women are trothles, and flote in an houre.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'But what helps complaining? In vaine I complaine:
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
I must patiently suffer her scorne and disdaine.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'Come, all you forsaken, and sit down by me,
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
He that 'plaines of his false love, mine's falser than she.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'The willow wreath weare I, since my love did fleet;
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
A garland for lovers forsaken most meete.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow shall be my garland!'

Part the Second

'Lowe lay'd by my sorrow, begot by disdaine,
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Against her too cruell, still, still I complaine.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow shall be my garland!

'O love too injurious, to wound my poore heart,
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
To suffer the triumph, and joy in my smart!
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'O willow, willow, willow! the willow garland,
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
A sign of her falsenesse before me doth stand.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow shall be my garland.

'As here it doth bid to despair and to dye,
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
So hang it, friends, ore me in grave where I lye.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'In grave where I rest mee, hang this to the view,
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Of all that doe knowe her, to blaze her untrue.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'With these words engraven, as epitaph meet,
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
'Here lyes one, drank poyson for potion most sweet.'
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'Though she thus unkindly hath scorned my love,
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
And carelessly smiles at the sorrowes I prove;
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'I cannot against her unkindly exclaim,
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Cause once well I loved her, and honoured her name.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow shall be my garland.

'The name of her sounded so sweete in mine eare,
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
It rays'd my heart lightly, the name of my deare;
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'As then 'twas my comfort, it now is my griefe;
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
It now brings me anguish; then brought me reliefe.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow, &c.

'Farewell, faire false-hearted, plaints end with my breath!
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Thou dost loath me, I love thee, though cause of my death.
O willow, willow, willow!
O willow, willow, willow!
Sing, O the greene willow shall be my garland.'

Early Works - Willow, Willow

Willow, willow
soft swinging low head
sadness brings night tears
to your breast.

Singing of a night wing
circles in the sky
down in the darkness
a life begins to die.

Willow, willow
no answer to give
sunlight brings bright
eyes exploring where you live.

Songs of happy voices
whisper to the breeze
but no one see the tragedy
that lies beneath the leaves.

Willow, willow
watching the world go by
evening breathes a stillness
near the close of the day.

Cries of distant shadows
and shriek of diving claws
hissing into silence
that will soon engulf them all.

For him I know not: vii

Ever since the door
Closed by itself on that
Evening as light began to fade
Everything around looked dark
I fail to see myself too in that no-light...
But those glittering star-like moments
That we shared on that evening
Of thickening shadows
Still illumine my unknown niches
As a swarm of fireflies
On a rainy night...

Love At First Light

It's the crack of noon
And i sit here watching you sleeping
I only wish that i could remember your name
But i know it's written on a matchbook somewhere
And maybe i'll find it, and maybe i'll care
Or maybe your'll fix me with one of those stares
And put up a fight
So when you awake i admit i'm relieved
When you flash me a smile like a diamond
And just for a moment i almost believe
In love at first light
I propose a breakfast of coffee and aspirin
You laugh, suggesting a raw egg or two
But oh was it ever so good being bad?
Like a couple of vampires, deliciously mad
Saying this is the best blood that we've ever had
So we drank it all night
And it we untangle the webs that we weave
Then mayber there's room for more laughter
'Cos just for a moment i almost believe
In love at first light
Feeling cold
You put a robe 'round my shoudlers
Smile and pull one of your favourite books form my shelf
Let's opens the curtains and let out the dark
And if the sun doesn't melt us and there's still a spark
And we do something human like walk in the park
The spark could ignite
So maybe i'm moonstruck, or maybe naive
But i know there's a God and a Devil
So maybe i'm crazy enough to believe
In love at first light

I Quit

i quit trying to save the world...
and just offered my hand,
and walked beside it.
i quit trying to find the truth,
for it was already within me.
i quit trying to tell anyone anything,
and just listened in perfect stillness.
i quit trying to be religious,
and found the sacred in the common.
i quit trying to stop the wars,
and let the wars within me end!
i quit trying to find god,
and just looked in the mirror.
i quit fighting for freedom,
and found a freedom they couldnt take.
i quit shouting out for justice,
and walked in a way that was just.
i quit wanting to own anything,
and so broke the final bonds.
i quit trying to be what they wanted,
and decided to be myself.
i quit blaming, condemning, and accusing,
and took the responsibility on myself.
i quit trying to make myself a name,
and walked in nobody's shoes.
i quit staring from behind the bars,
that were never really there.
i quit seeking to define and hold,
and just let go and lived.
i quit hiding from death, and opened the door,
and found the light from which darkness
is made!

First Kiss

Blind dates were not the norm for you, yet it worked out that way...
So I dressed up in all things new in hopes I looked O.K.
And so it was that we first met, shook hands, all smiles and grins
Still asking what the Fates had set as our blind date begins...

The restaurant turned out first class - our meal was well prepared.
Your finger paused, caressed your glass... I wondered if you cared.
You laughed at jokes made up in haste and ate contentedly...
The wine was excellent to taste and mellowed just like me...

I walked you home beneath the stars that twinkled like your eyes -
In time we knew this date would pass though it had been so nice!
Outside your door I shook your hand yet sighed so sad to part!
I prayed that you could understand the hopes within my heart!

You turned to go, my heart stood still - I breathed not in or out!
Then you turned back! We shared the thrill and kissed away all doubt!
Thus love was born, made manifest... acknowledged by our lips
And by the way we felt so blessed - hearts, toes and fingertips!

When I walked home I walked on air! My mind still in a dream!
I thought you were beyond compare - we're now a kissing team!
From that first kiss we've seen love grow to blossom like the rose...
God gave us light then watched it glow, recorded now in prose...

Call It Destiny

As I sit at home in my chair
I think of her as she's not there
Remembering the talks that we once held
As we thought of no one, but only ourselves.
For a moment as though we were just one
Then that moment disappeared and that feeling gone.
We smiled and laughed as we sat and talked
So we decided together, to go for a walk.

As I walked around a local park
Am all alone now and it's after dark
I think of memories that once had been
But now they are gone, as though never seen.
I think of her as she had held my arm
But that was yesterday and that was the charm
We walked not knowing if we were lovers or friends
Wished I knew the beginning, and not the end.

As I reached out to touch a star
As though to hold it from afar
I close my eyes with an opened hand
Then once again I finally understand.
You are not here but your in my sight
Not just in the daytime but also the night
As in my heart, there you will always be
You can call it love, but I call it destiny.

My Evening Star

MY EVENING STAR
In the gathering gloom of my evening
sky,
I saw your face in that evening star;
Showering your brightness and your
magic light,
To dispel my gloom from afar!
While in my heart a sad old tune, -
A tune of sadness and of love,
Played like the melody of an old violin,
And I listened as if in a waking dream!
For you have left me and gone afar,
To shine as my enduring evening star!
