My thanks, friends of the County Scientific Association,
For this modest boulder,
And its little tablet of bronze.
Twice I tried to join your honored body,
And was rejected,
And when my little brochure
On the intelligence of plants
Began to attract attention
You almost voted me in.
After that I grew beyond the need of you
And your recognition.
Yet I do not reject your memorial stone,
Seeing that I should, in so doing,
Deprive you of honor to yourselves.

E.C. Culbertson
Is it true, Spoon River,
That in the hall-way of the New Court House
There is a tablet of bronze
Containing the embossed faces
Of Editor Whedon and Thomas Rhodes?
And is it true that my successful labors
In the County Board, without which
Not one stone would have been placed on another,
And the contributions out of my own pocket
To build the temple, are but memories among the people,
Gradually fading away, and soon to descend
With them to this oblivion where I lie?
In truth, I can so believe.
For it is a law of the Kingdom of Heaven
That whoso enters the vineyard at the eleventh hour
Shall receive a full day's pay.
And it is a law of the Kingdom of this World
That those who first oppose a good work
Seize it and make it their own,
When the corner-stone is laid,
And memorial tablets are erected.

Affirming That...
Attract good health,
To me and my home.
Attract wealth of understanding,
And an abundance condoned...
To me and my home.
Attract goodwill and love,
To me and my home.
Attract a forgiveness shared,
To me and my home.
Attract an increased love of God,
To me and my home.
Attract those of faith and encouragement,
To me and my home.
Attract a giving that receives graciously,
To me and my home.
Attract a growth that knows its worth,
To me and my home.
Attract a success
That leaves a mind at peace and rest.
With friends and family,
All feeling a 'givingness'.
And let it be known...
That in my home dwells a heart,
Affirming that which it needs...
To deliver what God expects!
As I journey upon this path,
He enlightens...
Whenever I come to pray to Him and ask,
For guidance to assist me
With all He gives and my tasks...
With Him I know I will pass!
And in the doing,
I am hopeful...
To attract to my life the best God has,
For me and those affirming that!
Affirming 'that' to ourselves at last!

Centennial Celebration
In the year eighteen seventy-six,
A Fourth of July celebration
Was held in Grand Rapids city
In honor to our nation.
The largest city in the county of Kent,
Is this city, and it is respected,
For thousands of people was here to see
The beautiful arch erected.
The Centennial arch on Campau Place
Was the most principal feature;
It was a grand beautiful sight
To all human sensitive creatures;
To all the people that loved to read
The mottoes on it painted,
The engravings, too, and tell
What each one represented.
The paintings and mottoes on the arch
Was viewed by many people;
It was Colonel Joseph Penney's design,
And his work could not be equalled.
Mr. C. H. Gifford was architect,
He formed the noble structure,
A memento to the Centennial year,
A pride of our nation's culture.
A cabin was built, too, I believe,
That nicely represented
One that the traders built years ago,
This was the only one invented.
Ten thousand people respected it,
This token of early years, with pay;
The honor of this little hut
Was due to Mr. Godfroy.
The stars and stripes was honored, too,
For from a thousand windows waving,
That dear old flag, red, white and blue,
That's loved throughout our nation:
That same flag for one hundred years
Has waved over our nation;
May God let it forever wave
Over our Union celebration.
The people in the city, friends,
Was an honor to our nation,
For they all joined heart and hand
In our Union celebration.
Some gave money, other labor,
To maintain what was intended.
It was a success, some people said,
Who here that day attended.
That day will never be forgot
By the people of Kent county,
God bless the people who joined that day
In the honor of our country.
The people in the city, friends,
Dearly loved this nation,
For they saved no time or expense
In our Centennial celebration.

Inward
you shall listen to the voices of the young
the buds have their own kind of songs
that makes you see the past of the roots
you shall disregard the murmur of the stones
the present predicament that you are in
when will you give up being hard on yourself?
stone upon stone
boulder upon boulder
you have crushed what softness is left
on the soil of your birth
there is another way
take what light offers us sometimes
a little warmth
that enlightenment that opens the eyes
of the heart
the path inward
that opens the door of our
souls

Above All
Above all kingdoms
Above all thrones
Above all wonders
The world has ever known
Above all wealth
And treasures of the earth
There's no way to measure
What You're worth.
Above all powers
Above all kings
Above all nature
And all created things
Above all wisdom
And all the ways of man
You were here
Before the world began.
Crucified
Laid behind the stone
You lived to die
Rejected and alone
Like a rose
Trampled on the ground
You took the fall
And thought of me
Above all.
Crucified
Laid behind the stone
You lived to die
Rejected and alone
Like a rose
Trampled on the ground
You took the fall
And thought of me
Above all.
Crucified
Laid behind the stone
You lived to die
Rejected and alone
Like a rose
Trampled on the ground
You took the fall
And thought of me
Above all.
Like the rose
Trampled on the ground
You took the fall
And thought of me
Above all.

As I rejected amnesty, so I reject revenge. I ask all Americans who ever asked for goodness and mercy in their lives, who ever sought forgiveness for their trespasses, to join in rehabilitating all the casualties of the tragic conflict of the past. More Me
I am what they call plain pretty,
an in-betweener
not really pretty
not really plain
and I attract guys
who see me as a compromise
from what they really what-
the cheer leader blond
with the hot bod.
I am the bland personality
with pretty eyes
a weak chin;
cautious
with an intense gaze
reflecting my need
to have more that what I am ever offered
by guys who are plain-pretty too
or too too nice and have the slow
uptake of the often rejected.
My world offers me only the boring.
I could do something I suppose
but I missed the ring;
I was the also ran,
the next to the last chosen
the bridesmaid;
the sidekick;
the not-as-pretty friend
and what I did was to break
free of my old world
and soar
with plastic surgery.
Last year I took the knife and now I am strangely pretty
but I still know who I am inside
and that is disturbing;
and more disturbing is that I want to
reject the guys seeking pretty
for the times the rejected me as almost pretty
and that makes me feel pretty-strange;
angry and not lovable;
not an airhead now-
but the trophy.
I thought last night
how many almost-pretty
might have been easier
and more me.

Two Kinds of Intelligence
There are two kinds of intelligence: one acquired,
as a child in school memorizes facts and concepts
from books and from what the teacher says,
collecting information from the traditional sciences
as well as from the new sciences.
With such intelligence you rise in the world.
You get ranked ahead or behind others
in regard to your competence in retaining
information. You stroll with this intelligence
in and out of fields of knowledge, getting always more
marks on your preserving tablets.
There is another kind of tablet, one
already completed and preserved inside you.
A spring overflowing its springbox. A freshness
in the center of the chest. This other intelligence
does not turn yellow or stagnate. It's fluid,
and it doesn't move from outside to inside
through conduits of plumbing-learning.
This second knowing is a fountainhead
from within you, moving out.
Some will have to cease thinking of the Church as a memorial association for a deceased clergyman called Christ.

A Woman´s World
It is a woman´s world
The new sex symbols are men they want to look like
muscular heroes seen on TV and on films.
They train several times a day to get a perfect body
other men have, thinking they must to attract women,
but all they attract are other men who fall into
the same trap what a beautiful body is the beginning
and a goal by itself. Why is it that men have been
reduced to think of their body must be perfect when
it by itself has little value? In a world where women
are equal; men subconsciously think they have in order
to attract women must look nice and attractive.
But women are not stupid they may adore a beautiful
Body, but they prefer, after having a fling with a body
builder, marry a man with prospects who can give
them security and economic stability. Women are not
romantic, they pretend to be, but prefer to marry
a man who can look after their children regardless if
the man are the real fathers or not, because a man
will accept a foundling in the name of love.

Personal Attention
Personal attention

Personal attention
an average child needs
Personal attention
at risk child pleads
Personal attention
an autistic child deeds

is what every child needs
Thus..Personal attention
is what every teacher heeds

After The County Show
“Hello carrot, my word you do look tasty.”
“Oh, hello knife you too look pretty sharp
a cut above the rest I’d say, but let’s not be too hasty.”
“I say carrot, are you here for today’s county dinner? ”
“No, no not I, I’m a showpiece,
voted best of the show, a gold ribbon winner.”
“I knew you were special, lying next to the sole from Dover,
but surely you must know what you’re doing here
now that the county show is over? ”
“I reckon they want to show me off to all the local villagers.”
“Somehow carrot I think you’d better reckon again,
whilst I slice up the beans and cabbages.”

Zealous patriot
I don’t want to be called zealous patriot
This not the matter of important subject
No one should appreciate it or reject
It does not help more with enthusiasm to inject
Tomorrow is cricket world cup final on native ground
Many may be openly worshipping and freely found
That does not mean we shall not ask for same blessings
For our opponent team in case something goes missing
We want the country should emerge as clear winner
Both the teams are fully equipped but still fear
What will be reaction at home when they return?
The home crowd may turn hostile in turn
Each second may be missing our heart beats
The war of nerves and may favor the fortune for fit
Millions may raise their hands in prayer
One by one the uncertainty may disappear from the layers
It is nice to be on the home side and pray for success
It is equally important to be polite with full access
At no stage it must create little apprehension of bias
The sport must have salient feature thus
I wish sports flag fly high in the sky
Let each team whole heartedly struggle or try
The able and strong may win the game
The honor and glory must go without any blame
I wish full blast from their bats
Let them pounce like hunter cats
Have pound of flash as final reward
Look for better finish with glorious awards
I fear no unruly scene on the glorious day
As people are responsible and know the way
Visitors are honored guests and always welcome
The finals cup races may go and again come
Let us join hands for healthy competition
It should not have any ugly repetition
We, as country, raise our head in recognition
Let no untoward incident prove it as powerful ignition

The House Plants
the plants, they are your friends
especially the ones in your room
if you are sensitive to their feelings
you will know they are there trying
to reach out to you all the time
when it quiets down
the television not playing
and the children not prancing around
you would feel another kind
trying to communicate with you
their invisible hands would even
try awaken that faculty in you you
could use to communicate with them
the plants know, we were all once
relatives and they remember that part
in you which will still embrace them
even in the densest of forests
just take a look at the roses,
they can be man's closest friends,
better than the dogs
they slow down their evolution just so that
they can help man express
their love with more charms
men are yang and plants ying
when the two embrace
productivity starts to grow
men breathe out to give the plants
a life and plants breathe out too
to give men a life

Getting Married
You called to share your good news!
That your getting married, on March fourteenth!
You knew that is my Birthday?
who would, or could ever think?
That you would have both planned it that way
in some sort of honored memory to me dear.
I'm blessed to know you both love me that much
for your wedding day with me to share.
I remember the first day they handed
your little precious body over to me.
Born in another woman's womb
but always felt you were, a real part of me.
You grew up with such sweetness
that you have shared now with your wife to be
and I'm honored to be now a part of you both
on your wedding day, and My Birthday this March fourteenth.
God Bless, Love Mom
