Too Late
COULD ye come back to me, Douglas, Douglas,
In the old likeness that I knew,
I would be so faithful, so loving, Douglas,
Douglas, Douglas, tender and true.
Never a scornful word should grieve ye,
I'd smile on ye sweet as the angels do;--
Sweet as your smile on me shone ever,
Douglas, Douglas, tender and true.
O to call back the days that are not!
My eyes were blinded, your words were few
Do you know the truth now up in heaven,
Douglas, Douglas, tender and true?
I never was worthy of you, Douglas;
Not half worthy the like of you:
Now all men beside seem to me like shadows--
I love you, Douglas, tender and true.
Stretch out your hand to me, Douglas, Douglas
Drop forgiveness from heaven like dew;
As I lay my heart on your dead heart, Douglas,
Douglas, Douglas, tender and true.

Douglas
Douglas, you will love again
I'm your mother and I feel your pain
You're not too old- only 50 dear
Brian's an OAP, he remarried last year.
And Douglas's childhood returns in his head
The sun won't heal the rain
Remember butterfly summers instead
Blotting paper for the pain.
Douglas, son, you must move on
We all have crosses to bear
You can see your children now and again
Take them to the fair.
And where did all the loyal friends go
Blown free by the ill wind that sucked you below
Promises fail that are written in snow.
Douglas you are drinking too much
You won't find peace in a glass
Maybe you need a counsellor
Or a weekly yoga class.
Son, I miss your dad you know
They say time is a great healer.
Make the best of life
The farce, the show
Curse the cards but don't blame the dealer.
But Douglas he will cry alone
His masquerade won't cover his tears
And Douglas he will die alone
When he wakes tomorrow to face his fears.

I do think I'm lucky I met Michael. Not just Michael Douglas the actor and producer with two Oscars on the shelf, but Michael Douglas, the love of my life. I really do think it was meant to happen.

Beauty Asks for a Rose
to the Saviour of all saviours
only bring me the Rose of all roses
clouded pink in winter's storms
the Artic rose no one can comprehend
or reconfigure
the high serene silver
rose confounding moonlight
recovered by kings in flight
from their lost kingdoms
the one that is mirrored in
the starry triptich
whenever I close my eyes
only bring me the cardinal Rose, the rose of
hidden music, scrolled and scrolled the
wounded Rose
the silence of petals streaming
the heart within the heart within the heart

Song is a Ladder of Diamonds
song is a ladder of diamonds
flung into space
we try to reach You on
every rung
and fail
song is a web of stars
we get lost in
a mist a drizzle of
music half-forgotten
when the prompting angels
fade from view
song is a difficult road
in a drenching rain on the way to work
and being on foot
with cars flying by
on either side, and people yelling
things out of the window at high speed
song is being kicked
down so many flights of stairs
and still, ascending
song is a place remembered
we can almost reach
but not without You-
this is my diamond.
song.

In Equal Sacrifice
Thus of old the Douglas did:
He left his land as he was bid
With the royal heart of Robert the Bruce
In a golden case with a golden lid,
To carry the same to the Holy Land;
By which we see and understand
That that was the place to carry a heart
At loyalty and love's command,
And that was the case to carry it in.
The Douglas had not far to win
Before he came to the land of Spain,
Where long a holy war had been
Against the too-victorious Moor;
And there his courage could not endure
Not to strike a blow for God
Before he made his errand sure.
And ever it was intended so,
That a man for God should strike a blow,
No matter the heart he has in charge
For the Holy Land where hearts should go.
But when in battle the foe were met,
The Douglas found him sore beset,
With only strength of the fighting arm
For one more battle passage yet-
And that as vain to save the day
As bring his body safe away-
Only a signal deed to do
And a last sounding word to say.
The heart he wore in a golden chain
He swung and flung forth into the plain,
And followed it crying 'Heart or death!'
And fighting over it perished fain.
So may another do of right,
Give a heart to the hopeless fight,
The more of right the more he loves;
So may another redouble might
For a few swift gleams of the angry brand,
Scorning greatly not to demand
In equal sacrifice with his
The heart he bore to the Holy Land.

It is only partly true that religion does more harm than good in society. The community makes God into the image it wants, vengeful, or milky sweet, or scrupulously just, and so on.
