In Equal Sacrifice
Thus of old the Douglas did:
He left his land as he was bid
With the royal heart of Robert the Bruce
In a golden case with a golden lid,
To carry the same to the Holy Land;
By which we see and understand
That that was the place to carry a heart
At loyalty and love's command,
And that was the case to carry it in.
The Douglas had not far to win
Before he came to the land of Spain,
Where long a holy war had been
Against the too-victorious Moor;
And there his courage could not endure
Not to strike a blow for God
Before he made his errand sure.
And ever it was intended so,
That a man for God should strike a blow,
No matter the heart he has in charge
For the Holy Land where hearts should go.
But when in battle the foe were met,
The Douglas found him sore beset,
With only strength of the fighting arm
For one more battle passage yet-
And that as vain to save the day
As bring his body safe away-
Only a signal deed to do
And a last sounding word to say.
The heart he wore in a golden chain
He swung and flung forth into the plain,
And followed it crying 'Heart or death!'
And fighting over it perished fain.
So may another do of right,
Give a heart to the hopeless fight,
The more of right the more he loves;
So may another redouble might
For a few swift gleams of the angry brand,
Scorning greatly not to demand
In equal sacrifice with his
The heart he bore to the Holy Land.

The Death of Sir James, Lord of Douglas
"Men may weill wyt, thouch nane thaim tell,
How angry for sorow, and how fell,
Is to tyne sic a Lord as he
To thaim that war off hys mengye.’
- Barbour's Bruce, B. XX. i. 507.
Where rich Seville's proud turrets rise
A foreign ship at anchor lies;
The pennons, floating in the air,
Proclaim that one of rank is there-—
The Douglas, with a gallant band
Of warriors, seeks the Holy Land.
But wherefore now the trumpet's bray,
The clang of arms and war’s array,
The atabal and martial drum?
The Moor—the infidel is come;
And there is Sultan Osmyn—see!
With all his Paynim chivalry;
And they have sworn to glut their steel
With the best blood of fair Castile.
"And do we here inactive stand?"
The Douglas cries; "Land! comrades, land!"
Then for the Christian camp he makes,
When thus Alphonso silence breaks:
"What news from Scotland do you bring;
And where is now your patriot king?"
"Alas! within this casket lies
The heart so valiant, good, and wise,
This to the Holy Land we bear,
For we have sworn to lay it there.
But let us forward to the fight,
And God protect the Christian right!"
To whom Alphonso—"Scottish lord,
That now for Spain cost draw that sword,
The terror of thy English foes,
When for her freedom Scotland rose;
With knights like thee and thy brave band
We’ll drive the Moslem from the land."
The Douglas thus his comrades cheers—
"Be brave! and as for him that fears,
Let the base coward turn and fly,
For we will gain the day, or die.
Now couch the trusty Scottish spear,
And think King Robert’s heart is here,
And boldly charge—already, see
The dogs of Moslems turn and flee."
At the first onset, with the slain
Those valiant warriors strew the plain;
But, hark! the Allah Hu! the foes
Rally, and hot the combat grows,
For here the Spaniards yield, and there
The Moors have slain the brave St. Clair.
Then, midst the thickest of his foes,
The precious casket Douglas throws—
"Pass on before us" hear him cry,
"For I will follow thee, or die."
He rushes on—but all in vain,
For thicker comes the arrowy rain;
And now, by multitudes opprest,
With many a wound upon his breast,
Where ’midst the slain the casket lies,
A noble death the Douglas dies.

The Heart Of The Bruce
It was upon an April morn,
While yet the frost lay hoar,
We heard Lord James's bugle-horn
Sound by the rocky shore.
Then down we went, a hundred knights,
All in our dark array,
And flung our armour in the ships
That rode within the bay.
We spoke not as the shore grew less,
But gazed in silence back,
Where the long billows swept away
The foam behind our track.
And aye the purple hues decay'd
Upon the fading hill,
And but one heart in all that ship
Was tranquil, cold, and still.
The good Lord Douglas walk'd the deck,
And oh, his brow was wan!
Unlike the flush it used to wear
When in the battle van.-
'Come hither, come hither, my trusty knight,
Sir Simon of the Lee;
There is a freit lies near my soul
I fain would tell to thee.
'Thou know'st the words King Robert spoke
Upon his dying day,
How he bade me take his noble heart
And carry it far away;
'And lay it in the holy soil
Where once the Saviour trod,
Since he might not bear the blessed Cross,
Nor strike one blow for God.
'Last night as in my bed I lay,
I dream'd a dreary dream:-
Methought I saw a Pilgrim stand
In the moonlight's quivering beam.
'His robe was of the azure dye,
Snow-white his scatter'd hairs,
And even such a cross he bore
As good Saint Andrew bears.
''Why go you forth, Lord James,' he said,
'With spear and belted brand?
Why do you take its dearest pledge
From this our Scottish land?
''The sultry breeze of Galilee
Creeps through its groves of palm,
The olives on the Holy Mount
Stand glittering in the calm.
''But 'tis not there that Scotland's heart
Shall rest by God's decree,
Till the great angel calls the dead
To rise from earth and sea!
''Lord James of Douglas, mark my rede!
That heart shall pass once more
In fiery fight against the foe,
As it was wont of yore.
''And it shall pass beneath the Cross,
And save King Robert's vow,
But other hands shall bear it back,
Not, James of Douglas, thou!'
'Now, by thy knightly faith, I pray,
Sir Simon of the Lee-
For truer friend had never man
Than thou hast been to me-
'If ne'er upon the Holy Land
'Tis mine in life to tread,
Bear thou to Scotland's kindly earth
The relics of her dead.'
The tear was in Sir Simon's eye
As he wrung the warrior's hand-
'Betide me weal, betide me woe,
I'll hold by thy command.
'But if in battle front, Lord James,
'Tis ours once more to ride,
No force of man, nor craft of fiend,
Shall cleave me from thy side!'
And aye we sail'd, and aye we sail'd,
Across the weary sea,
Until one morn the coast of Spain
Rose grimly on our lee.
And as we rounded to the port,
Beneath the watch-tower's wall,
We heard the clash of the atabals,
And the trumpet's wavering call.
'Why sounds yon Eastern music here
So wantonly and long,
And whose the crowd of armèd men
That round yon standard throng?'
'The Moors have come from Africa
To spoil and waste and slay,
And King Alonzo of Castile
Must fight with them to-day.'
'Now shame it were,' cried good Lord James,
'Shall never be said of me,
That I and mine have turn'd aside,
From the Cross in jeopardie!
'Have down, have down, my merry men all-
Have down unto the plain;
We'll let the Scottish lion loose
Within the fields of Spain!'
'Now welcome to me, noble lord,
Thou and thy stalwart power;
Dear is the sight of a Christian knight
Who comes in such an hour!
'Is it for bond or faith ye come,
Or yet for golden fee?
Or bring ye France's lilies here,
Or the flower of Burgundie?'
'God greet thee well, thou valiant King,
Thee and thy belted peers-
Sir James of Douglas am I called,
And these are Scottish spears.
'We do not fight for bond or plight,
Not yet for golden fee;
But for the sake of our blessed Lord,
Who died upon the tree.
'We bring our great King Robert's heart
Across the weltering wave,
To lay it in the holy soil
Hard by the Saviour's grave.
'True pilgrims we, by land or sea,
Where danger bars the way;
And therefore are we here, Lord King,
To ride with thee this day!'
The King has bent his stately head,
And the tears were in his eyne-
'God's blessing on thee, noble knight,
For this brave thought of thine!
'I know thy name full well, Lord James,
And honour'd may I be,
That those who fought beside the Bruce
Should fight this day for me!
'Take thou the leading of the van,
And charge the Moors amain;
There is not such a lance as thine
In all the host of Spain!'
The Douglas turned towards us then,
O but his glance was high!-
'There is not one of all my men
But is as bold as I.
'There is not one of all my knights
But bears as true a spear-
Then onwards! Scottish gentlemen,
And think-King Robert's here!'
The trumpets blew, the cross-bolts flew,
The arrows flashed like flame,
As spur in side, and spear in rest,
Against the foe we came.
And many a bearded Saracen
Went down, both horse and man;
For through their ranks we rode like corn,
So furiously we ran!
But in behind our path they closed,
Though fain to let us through,
For they were forty thousand men,
And we were wondrous few.
We might not see a lance's length,
So dense was their array,
But the long fell sweep of the Scottish blade
Still held them hard at bay.
'Make in! make in!' Lord Douglas cried,
'Make in, my brethren dear!
Sir William of Saint Clair is down;
We may not leave him here!'
But thicker, thicker, grew the swarm,
And sharper shot the rain,
And the horses reared amid the press,
But they would not charge again.
'Now Jesu help thee,' said Lord James,
'Thou kind and true St Clair!
An' if I may not bring thee off,
I'll die beside thee there!'
Then in his stirrups up he stood,
So lionlike and bold,
And held the precious heart aloft
All in its case of gold.
He flung it from him, far ahead,
And never spake he more,
But-'Pass thee first, thou dauntless heart,
As thou wert wont of yore!'
The roar of fight rose fiercer yet,
And heavier still the stour,
Till the spears of Spain came shivering in,
And swept away the Moor.
'Now praised be God, the day is won!
They fly o'er flood and fell-
Why dost thou draw the rein so hard,
Good knight, that fought so well?'
'Oh, ride ye on, Lord King!' he said,
'And leave the dead to me,
For I must keep the dreariest watch
That ever I shall dree!
'There lies, beside his master's heart,
The Douglas, stark and grim;
And woe is me I should be here,
Not side by side with him!
'The world grows cold, my arm is old,
And thin my lyart hair,
And all that I loved best on earth
Is stretch'd before me there.
'O Bothwell banks! that bloom so bright,
Beneath the sun of May,
The heaviest cloud that ever blew
Is bound for you this day.
'And, Scotland, thou may'st veil thy head
In sorrow and in pain;
The sorest stroke upon thy brow
Hath fallen this day in Spain!
'We'll bear them back unto our ship,
We'll bear them o'er the sea,
And lay them in the hallowed earth,
Within our own countrie.
'And be thou strong of heart, Lord King,
For this I tell thee sure,
The sod that drank the Douglas' blood
Shall never bear the Moor!'
The King he lighted from his horse,
He flung his brand away,
And took the Douglas by the hand,
So stately as he lay.
'God give thee rest, thou valiant soul,
That fought so well for Spain;
I'd rather half my land were gone,
So thou wert here again!'
We bore the good Lord James away,
And the priceless heart he bore,
And heavily we steer'd our ship
Towards the Scottish shore.
No welcome greeted our return,
Nor clang of martial tread,
But all were dumb and hushed as death
Before the mighty dead.
We laid our chief in Douglas Kirk,
The heart in fair Melrose;
And woeful men were we that day-
God grant their souls repose!

Dear Heart
Dear heart
I wish you could see that
Dear heart
You mean the world to me
Man with the broken heart filled with lead
Suffered and he fought for what he believed
The fighting is over now, the man is dead
A martyr for the cause
Man with the golden arm, his face gone pale
Taken too much junk, hes gone over the rale
Breathes out a sigh and his body wails
Hes gonna land in trouble, land in jail
Hed give his life, give his everything
To reach that goal and take that last and final fling
But I guess its just another story
In the greatest story ever told
Dear heart
I wish that you could see that
Dear heart
You mean the world to me

A Rock In A Weary Land
My love is my rock
In the long, low, weary land
Yes my love is my rock
In the long, low, weary land
None of this moves me,
I should be weeping but it only hurts when I yawn
I let it blow through me, and its gone!
Im dressed like a scarecrow
Stripped of all my power, as if some judge in judgement said
Off with his great coat, and his head!
My love is my rock
In the long, low, weary land
My love is my rock
In the long, low, weary land
My love is my rock
In the long, low, weary land
My love is my rock
In the long, low, weary land
Meaningless movies
On the screen behind the band thats blowing flowing shapes
Half of their music is on tape
My mentor and champion is busy tilting at the windows of his stately home
The daemon hes grappling
Is his own!
My love is my rock
In the long, low, weary land
My love is my rock
In the long, low, weary land
My love is my rock
In the long, low, weary land
Yes my love is my rock
In the long, low, weary land
His letter lies open
His accusations flow like poison from his every word
My heart would be broken, but for her
The fag-end of winter
Im in shock! Im on the ropes! I dont know whats become!
She plucks the splinter from my thumb
My love is my rock
In the long, low, weary land
Yes my love is my rock

Long Way From Home
There's a black Siberian
Look a white guy in the sun
Miles away from where the quest begun
From the ice to the sand
Nations moved across the land
Ever since time designed the man
Someday to return
To the place of my birth
I'm a long way from home
But I know where I belong
It's a long way I know
But the heart will still carry me home
Firewater in the blood
Took away the livelihood
Giving thanks every single year
Who the hell
Owns this land?
Is it God or is it man?
With the blood we draw the line again
I'm called to return
To the place of my birth
I'm a long way from home
But I know where I belong
It's a long way I know
But the heart will still carry me home
I'm a long way from home
But I know where I belong
It's a long way I know
But the heart will still carry me home

Too Late
COULD ye come back to me, Douglas, Douglas,
In the old likeness that I knew,
I would be so faithful, so loving, Douglas,
Douglas, Douglas, tender and true.
Never a scornful word should grieve ye,
I'd smile on ye sweet as the angels do;--
Sweet as your smile on me shone ever,
Douglas, Douglas, tender and true.
O to call back the days that are not!
My eyes were blinded, your words were few
Do you know the truth now up in heaven,
Douglas, Douglas, tender and true?
I never was worthy of you, Douglas;
Not half worthy the like of you:
Now all men beside seem to me like shadows--
I love you, Douglas, tender and true.
Stretch out your hand to me, Douglas, Douglas
Drop forgiveness from heaven like dew;
As I lay my heart on your dead heart, Douglas,
Douglas, Douglas, tender and true.

Wickedness Within
There’s a wickedness deep within, causing many to stumble in sin,
For desperately wicked is our heart, and from it we cannot depart.
And who can know that inner part, down inside each human heart?
So to know the deepest thought; where all our actions are wrought.
With such a heart, beyond cure, can we, before Holy God endure?
For one day friend all will stand, before The Lord upon Holy Land.
And it is God, who has the cure, to help us with a heart that’s pure.
This if we take the time with Him, to reason together regarding sin.
With such a deceitful heart friend, separation from God is our end,
Compared to a Righteous God; who shall destroy sin with His rod,
The sin that sets all men apart, which stems from a deceitful heart.
But this can change by God’s Love, Grace and Mercy from above.
A brand new heart we shall receive, when in Christ we truly believe.
Our heart He cleanses of its dross, with the blood from the cross,
Purging us of our wickedness, through Jesus’ own Righteousness.
Through the blood of Jesus Christ, a wicked heart can see new life.
It’s the deceitfulness of our sin, that keeps us from accepting Him,
But, if we’d only reason with God, He’d lead us with staff and rod.
He’ll make our sin white as snow, when His Son we come to know,
Who shed His blood on Calvary, so we can live with God eternally.

I Want To Have
I want to have a heart that’s Holy
I want to have a heart tuned into God.
I want to have a heart that sends love
With each beating hearts muscle throb.
I want to have a heart of pure Mercy
For all of God’s children here on earth.
I want to have a heart of Joy in abundance
From which God’s power was Virgin birthed.
I want to have a heart of true compassion
That opens up for all in need.
I want to have a heart that spreads God’s word
In each word which planted seed.
I want to have a heart of Christ
That it beats but only for Him above.
I want to have a heart that is filled with Him
To bring to Him one day, to Heaven above.

Take The Water To The Mountain
Take the water to the mountain;
Take the river to the sea.
Let the forest be salvation
Long before it needs to be.
Take the water to the mountain;
Let your body flow upstream.
Let it cascade off your shoulders;
Be the body of your dreams.
Take the water to the mountain;
Let the sun shine on your ground.
You decide your every movement;
Let the water to the land.
Take the water to the mountain;
Cross the great divide of love.
Give to nature all you can give;
Let the mother know your heart.
Take the water to the mountain;
Lets become alive again.
Holy water, holy mountain,
Holy river, holy tree.

Land Of The Living
i found myself
in another world
i found myself
alive and well
i am the vapor
i am the gas
you be the angel
of everything
this is the land of the living
this is the land of reprisal
this is the land of the living
the living
the living
i lost myself
too wide a plane
i opened up
i'm not the same
i am electric
made of wire
you be the match
i'll be the fire
this is the land of the living
this is the land of reprisal
this is the land of the living
the living
the living
the living
in myself i try for you
walk a thousand miles to get us through
airways
jet planes
safe landings
no branding
land
land
this is the land of the living
the land of reprisal
this is the land of the living
the land of survival
survival

this is the land of the living

My love is my rock in the long low weary land
His letter lies open
His accusations flow like poison from his every word
My heart would be broken but for Her
The fag-end of winter
I'm in shock, I'm on the ropes, I don't know what's to come
She plucks the splinter from my thumb
My love is my rock in the long low weary land
My love is my rock in the long low weary land
My love is my rock in the long low weary land
Yes my love is my rock in the long low weary land
In the weary land

Have We Forgotten God?
Have we forgotten God today, regardless of what polls do say?
God is acknowledged by most, across this land, coast to coast,
But, is His Truth truly believed, or are many souls just deceived?
If God, by the country is lifted up, why are our ways so corrupt?
Yes, “Oh my God” we often hear, but, do you sense a holy fear?
In their voice as they proclaim, our Sovereign God’s Holy Name?
And what yet, is even worse, His Name is used more, as a curse,
As many say they believe in Him, while being led by cords of sin.
Truly the question one must raise, while living in these later days,
Regarding God, just if or when, He’s even in the thoughts of men,
And friend that is only just a start, for is He moving in their heart?
Is He accepted with a devout nod, or do they even think of God?
If no place for God is found, these men will be on shaky ground,
Only girded by the shifting sand, in hard trials they will not stand;
Such is the same for any nation, that falls from God’s Revelation,
Ignoring The Word, many cherish, many within our land will perish.
Saying they believe in The Lord, but God’s Holy Laws go ignored,
While we live in these darker days, with many seeking other ways,
If you’re concerned at all my friend, let us not continue to pretend,
Again, all across this land we trod, have men truly forgotten God?

A wish that one day
A wish that one day,
I can face the courage,
And beset myself upon the task,
To carry on a conversation with someone,
Without judgement,
Without guilt,
Without shyness,
And without remorse.
A wish that one day,
I can have the courage
To carry out a conversation with someone,
With love in my heart,
And happiness in my eyes,
With soul within my voice,
And strength behind each word.
A wish that one day,
I can have the courage,
To carry out a conversation with someone,
Not only within my head,
Or within my mind,
But with an actual person with
A name, a heart, a soul,
A personality, a peace of mind.
All of which I don't know
And all of whuich is foreign to me.
A wish that one day,
I can have the courage,
To carry out a conversation with someone,
With the confidence to say my name out loud,
To be heard,
To be known,
To be recognized,
And to be loved.
A wish that one day,
I can have the courage,
To carry out all these wishes,
And know that wishes do come true,
That there is truth behind a wish,
Behind hope,
And a reason why I should
Keep making wishes,
Why I should start to hope
Because I do not know any now.

Whose Land?
Men fought with fiery words
To claim their living land
On pretext of who came first
And whose god made the sand
'Justice, Justice! ' they claimed,
'Intruders are them! ” they blamed.
The Wind did carry this news
To pals- dear Apes and Oaks,
Who came with telling proof
Of their existence before man.
And by logic of man's demand
They said “Our Land, Our Land'.
'Oh No! ” said righteous man
Our ears don't hear your voice.
And justices that we frame
Are only that suits our choice;
'Justice! ” mocked the Oak.
'Selfish”, the Ape did croak.
When your heart starts to hate
To share the land you stand -
With your mind, a minute ask
To whom was given this land.
'Cause earth was made for all
And none has right to brawl.

Only A heart that wants you...
No words to say
No way to feel
No tears to show
Only a heart left that wants you...
A dream of years, shattered
A romance of time, broken
A memoir of past, burnt
Only a heart left that wants you....
A wait for no tomorrow in sight
A battle too long to fight
A distance of miles to go
Only a heart left that wants you
...
A sun refusing to shine
A romance running out of rhyme
A life losing on wine
Only a heart left that wants you...
No strength to carry on
No people to count from
No light to see through
Only a heart left that wants you...
