Christina Georgina Rossetti

O Wind, Where Have You Been

O wind, where have you been,
That you blow so sweet?
Among the violets
Which blossom at your feet.
The honeysuckle waits
For Summer and for heat.
But violets in the chilly Spring
Make the turf so sweet.

Violets

Violets, shy violets!
How many hearts with you compare!
Who hide themselves in thickest green,
And thence, unseen,
Ravish the enraptured air
With sweetness, dewy fresh and rare!

Violets, shy violets!
Human hearts to me shall be
Viewless violets in the grass,
And as I pass,
Odours and sweet imagery
Will wait on mine and gladden me!

Who Hath Despised The Day Of Small Things?

As violets so be I recluse and sweet,
Cheerful as daisies unaccounted rare,
Still sunward-gazing from a lowly seat,
Still sweetening wintry air.

While half-awakened Spring lags incomplete,
While lofty forest trees tower bleak and bare,
Daisies and violets own remotest heat
And bloom and make them fair.

Roses Are Red Violets Are Blue

Roses are red
Violets are blue
I've never found someone as patient
As you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
If you get lost
Then I'll look for you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
You know I'm always sorry
When I hurt you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
If I could
Id turn back to when i first kissed you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
If you don't believe me
Then what else can I do

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Baby no one knows me
As much as you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Believe I'll do anything
To get next to you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Tell me you still love me
And I'll run to you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
You might not know
But I love you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
The stars shine bright
But not as bright as you do

Roses are red
Violets are blue
If I could pick anyone
I would pick you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
The first day I saw you
That's when I knew

Roses are red
Violets are blue
No one will ever love you
As much as I do

Roses are red violets are blue
Even if you get me mad
I'll still be in love with you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
My heart skips a beat
When I'm laying next to you

Roses are red
Violets are blue
If you love me
Then show me that that love is true

Violets For Your Furs

Tom adair / matt dennis
It was winter in manhattan
Falling snowflakes filled the air
The streets were covered with a film of ice
But a little simple magic that Id heard about somewhere
Changed the weather all around, just withn a trice
You bought me violets for my furs
And it was spring for a while, remember?
You bought me violets for my furs
And there was april in that december
The snow drifted on the flowers and melted where it lay
The snow looked leke dew on the blossoms
As on a summer day
You bought me violets for my furs
Aand there was blue in the wintry sky
You pinned the violets to my furs
And gave a lift to the crowds passing by
You smiled at me so sweetly
Since then one thought occurs
That we fell in love completely
The day you bought me violets for my furs

My Playmate

The pines were dark on Ramoth hill,
Their song was soft and low;
The blossoms in the sweet May wind
Were falling like the snow.

The blossoms drifted at our feet,
The orchard birds sang clear;
The sweetest and the saddest day
It seemed of all the year.

For, more to me than birds or flowers,
My playmate left her home,
And took with her the laughing spring,
The music and the bloom.

She kissed the lips of kith and kin,
She laid her hand in mine
What more could ask the bashful boy
Who fed her father's kine?

She left us in the bloom of May
The constant years told o'er
Their seasons with as sweet May morns,
But she came back no more.

I walk, with noiseless feet, the round
Of uneventful years;
Still o'er and o'er I sow the spring
And reap the autumn ears.

She lives where all the golden year
Her summer roses blow;
The dusky children of the sun
Before her come and go.

There haply with her jewelled hands
She smooths her silken gown,-
No more the homespun lap wherein
I shook the walnuts down.

The wild grapes wait us by the brook,
The brown nuts on the hill,
And still the May-day flowers make sweet
The woods of Follymill.

The lilies blossom in the pond,
The bird builds in the tree,
The dark pines sing on Ramoth hill
The slow song of the sea.

I wonder if she thinks of them,
And how the old time seems,-
If ever the pines of Ramoth wood
Are sounding in her dreams.

I see her face, I hear her voice;
Does she remember mine?
And what to her is now the boy
Who fed her father's kine?

What cares she that the orioles build
For other eyes than ours,-
That other hands with nuts are filled,
And other laps with flowers?

O playmate in the golden time!
Our mossy seat is green,
Its fringing violets blossom yet,
The old trees o'er it lean.

The winds so sweet with birch and fern
A sweeter memory blow;
And there in spring the veeries sing
The song of long ago.

And still the pines of Ramoth wood
Are moaning like the sea,-

The moaning of the sea of change
Between myself and thee!

Setting the scene for M lady Lucianne

Few know where shy white violets grow
but I am one of those who do.
Just take my hand and we will go
together to a place I know.

I am prepared to share with you
But you must swear you will not tell
a single soul for if you do.
Too many folks will go there to

grub up the plants and take them home
to plant them in their garden plot.
Where other folks are not welcome
I would not mind if they took some.

But know quite well they’ll take them all
and leave not one single plant behind.
Their greed would be the plants downfall.
There would be none for us to find.

When we go walking hand in hand
along this pretty lovers lane.
I know my love you understand.
The violets grow where nature planned.

That white violets are very rare,
they are not meant to be confined.
They do not need a gardeners care
You will see when we get there.

Their beauty in a natural state.
Where they were intended to be,
I know you will appreciate
why I swear you to secrecy.

But I trust you implicitly
I know that you will not betray
the shy white violets or me.
You are the soul of honesty.

That’s why I am in love with you.
Not only are you sweet and kind
but to your word you’re always true.
and do what you say you will do.

When we get there I will propose
and hope that you will answer yes.
I think you have guessed my purpose
and know exactly why I chose.

To show my violets to you
today and now in early spring,
In fact I am convinced you do.
You know me far too well not to.

In the Temple

When Lilian comes I scarcely know
If Winter wraps the world in snow,
Or if 'tis Summer strikes a-glow
The fountain in the court below,
When Lilian comes.
Her flower-like eyes, her soft lips bring
The warmth and welcome of the Spring,
And round my room, a fairy ring,
See violets, violets blossoming,
When Lilion comes.

When Lilian goes I hear again
The infinite despair of rain
Drip on my darkening window-pane
The tears of Winter on the wane,
When Lilian goes.
Yet still about my lonely room
The visionary violets bloom,
And with her presence still perfume
The tedious page that I resume
When Lilian goes.

Almond Blossom

Blossom of the almond trees,
April's gift to April's bees,
Birthday ornament of Spring,
Flora's fairest daughterling;
Coming when no flowerets dare
Trust the cruel outer air;
When the royal kingcup bold
Dares not don his coat of gold;
And the sturdy black-thorn spray
Keeps his silver for the May; -
Coming when no flowerets would,
Save thy lowly sisterhood,
Early violets; blue and white,
Dying for their love of light; -
Almond blossom, sent to teach us
That the spring days soon will reach us,
Lest, with longing over-tried,
We die, as the violets died; -
Blossom, clouding all the tree
With thy crimson broidery,
Long before a leaf of green
On the bravest bough is seen; -
Ah! when winter winds are swinging
All thy red bells into ringing,
With a bee in every bell,
Almond bloom, we greet thee well.

Lillian

I. PROEM.
This was a sweet white wildwood violet
I found among the painted slips that grow
Where, under hot-house glass, the flowers forget
How the sun shines, and how the cool winds blow.

The violet took the orchid's colouring,
Tricked out its dainty fairness like the rest;
Yet still its breath was as the breath of Spring,
And the wood's heart was wild within its breast.

The orchid mostly is the flower I love,
And violets, the mere violets of the wood,
For all their sweetness, have not power to move
The curiosity that rules my blood.

Yet here, in this spice-laden atmosphere,
Where only nature is a thing unreal,
I found in just a violet, planted here,
The artificial flower of my ideal.
II. CHRISTMAS-EVE.
April-hearted Lilian,
April with our love began;
Winter comes, but April violets
Linger on.

So the fancy of an hour,
Born of sudden sun and shower,
Braves the winter, and has blossomed
Into flower.

Chilly Winds Dont Blow

H. krasnow, b. lovelock
Going where the willows weep no more, darlin baby,
Going where the willows weep no more,
Chilly winds dont blow along my shore, oh baby,
Where the chilly winds, the chilly winds dont blow.
Going where my father waits for me, oh baby,
Going where my father waits for me,
Going there cause there Id rather be, oh baby,
Where the chilly winds, the chilly winds dont blow.
Yes there will be red roses round my door, darlin baby,
There will be red roses round my door,
Going where theyll welcome me for sure, oh baby
Where the chilly wind, the chilly wind dont blow.
Chilly winds, chilly winds, the chilly winds dont blow.

To a Young Poet who Killed Himself

1 When you had played with life a space
2 And made it drink and lust and sing,
3 You flung it back into God's face
4 And thought you did a noble thing.
5 "Lo, I have lived and loved," you said,
6 "And sung to fools too dull to hear me.
7 Now for a cool and grassy bed
8 With violets in blossom near me."

9 Well, rest is good for weary feet,
10 Although they ran for no great prize;
11 And violets are very sweet,
12 Although their roots are in your eyes.
13 But hark to what the earthworms say
14 Who share with you your muddy haven:
15 "The fight was on -- you ran away.
16 You are a coward and a craven."

17 "The rug is ruined where you bled;
18 It was a dirty way to die!
19 To put a bullet through your head
20 And make a silly woman cry!
21 You could not vex the merry stars
22 Nor make them heed you, dead or living.
23 Not all your puny anger mars
24 God's irresistible forgiving.

25 "Yes, God forgives and men forget,
26 And you're forgiven and forgotten.
27 You may be gaily sinning yet
28 And quick and fresh instead of rotten.
29 And when you think of love and fame
30 And all that might have come to pass,
31 Then don't you feel a little shame?
32 And don't you think you were an ass?"

Roses Blushing Red And White

Roses blushing red and white,
For delight;
Honeysuckle wreaths above,
For love;
Dim sweet-scented heliotrope,
For hope;
Shining lilies tall and straight,
For royal state;
Dusky pansies, let them be
For memory;
With violets of fragrant breath,
For death.
