I designed all the characters, anyway, and Frank Doyle was doing all the writing. I didn't have any more input on what direction they were going to go with Josie.

Dark Eyed Doyle
Dark eyed Doyle they called him,
And he was dark eyed too. His eyes
Like black olives in white snow, his
Mother said. Had a way with girls,
An electrifying smile, an engaging
Manner. Not a bit like his father,
Grumpy, self righteous and always
Quoting the Bible, thumping the
Black cover. Danny Doyle could
Charm birds from trees, make his
Girlfriend’s mother giggle like she’d
Been tickled, make her father fume
Behind his newspaper with thinking
He knew what that Doyle was up to.
Doyle was a closed book; many read
His cover and liked what they saw,
Others didn’t and didn’t venture any
Further or deeper than the skin on
His nose. Ah, said Doyle, God alone
Knows me inside out and He alone is
My best judge, others can only know
What they think they see, but God alone,
Knows my real faults, knows the real me.

A Mirror Image
How many times when reading a book,
do we identify with the characters within?
Their traits they have we share,
their loves and heartaches
their lives go through somehow mirror our own.
It’s as if the author was writing about us.
As though he has put us under a microscope
and then writing down everything, he saw.
However, we know this isn’t so
because he or she has written
segments of their own life
and by accident they happen to mirror ours.
Every writer will tell you
that they have their characters under control.
Having written numerous novels,
I know the characters take on a life of their own
and do what they want to do.
We become their instrument as they guide us on our way.
We end up writing what they want us to say.
To every writer his characters are real,
they live, breathe and feel.
The more you write about them,
the more alive they become.
So the next time you pick up a book
and the characters seem real,
they probably are to the author
who looks after them.

After a while, the characters I'm writing begin to feel real to me. That's when I know I'm heading in the right direction.

You know it's my job to visualize, what is literal or audible, so I designed all the characters, and I designed what they do and how they should do it and so on.

Sing Me A Rainbow
Josie it´s been a long hard day
Down the road to where it´s at
I must have lost my way
When I got there they said I was too late
Now you´re the only one can get me straight
So won´t you sing me a rainbow Josie
Roll me a song
Just tonight make it right
Cause it´s been wrong for oh so long
There´s lots of shades of darkness, Josie
Deep inside a man
So sing me a rainbow if you can
The train I went to meet
Had come and gone
Seems like I spend all my time
Gettin´ off and gettin´ on
I sold my mind
And gave my dreams away
And tomorrow I´ll start lookin´
´Round for yesterday
But til then
Sing me a rainbow Josie
Roll me a song
Just tonight make it right
Cause it´s been wrong for oh so long
There´s lots of kinds of hunger Josie
You don´t understand
So sing me a rainbow if you can
If you can, If you can
Sing me a rainbow if you can.

Josie
Were gonna break out the hats and hooters
When josie comes home
Were gonna rev up the motor scooters
When josie comes home to stay
Were gonna park in the street
Sleep on the beach and make it
Throw down the jam till the girls say when
Lay down the law and break it
When josie comes home
When josie comes home
So good
Shes the pride of the neighborhood
Shes the raw flame
The live wire
She prays like a roman
With her eyes on fire
Jo would you love to scrapple
Shell never say no
Shine up the battle apple
Well shake em all down tonight
Were gonna mix in the street
Strike at the stroke of midnight
Dance on the bones till the girls say when
Pick up whats left by daylight
When josie comes home
When josie comes home
So bad
Shes the best friend we ever had
Shes the raw flame
The live wire
She prays like a roman
With her eyes on fire
When josie comes home
So good
Shes the pride of the neighborhood
Shes the raw flame
The live wire
She prays like a roman
With her eyes on fire

Hey Mr. Dream Maker
Josie's gone now
She cried a lot
Had to go away
Though i miss her
I want to kiss her
Ain't it just the way
But it's no way at all
'cos if you knew what i'm goin'
Through you'd know
That there's one thing wrong
With the way i'm living
Ain't got no josie no-more
Hey mr. dream maker send me a dream
This one is over it's not what it seamed
And so tonight when i turn out the light
Send me a new dream tonight
She didn't say much
Just a little touch
And she was on her way
Ooh i could have cried then
Instead i died then
She left me standing dazed
But it's no use crying
Well that's what everybody
Tells me and they all seem to know
That there's one thing wrong
With the way i'm living
Ain't got no josie no-more
Hey mr. dream maker send me a dream
This one is over it's not what it seamed
And so tonight when i turn out the light
Send me a new dream tonight......

When I'm writing the book I'm laughing at just how overblown the characters seemed. How full of himself he seems. But I didn't get far enough in the series to really drive the joke of it home.

2008: Things I Don't Want to Leave Behind
Didn't want to leave you
With a bad imnpression
Didn't want to take you
In the wrong direction
Didn't want to fool you
About my affection
Didn't want to leave you
With my last confession
I didn't want to end up
Without a reflection
Didn't want to accept fate
In the end there's no deception

King Lear
If you didn’t dream up always new ideas
And if they didn't empower you
To make our dreams to become more real,
If you didn't dance in the rain,
If you didn't cry
For not being a child
Any longer,
If you were able to forget yourself
For falling away into your body,
If you never screamed
In the darkness,
If you didn’t have
Enough courage
To make love
In the snow,
To feel
That snow melting on the ground,
Certainly you couldn't touch my soul,
Because I would prefer
To walk around
And to put my love in my hands
And, like a beggar, to stretch my left hand in your direction.
Moreover,
Like king Lear, to stretch my right hand in your direction,
Because if you really loved me,
I would never let you go.

Keep Your Hands Off Her
(huddie ledbetter/turner)
Keep your hands off her
Keep them big mitts down
Keep your hands off her
So keep them big mitts down
So keep your hands off her, hear what I say
She dont belong to you
Shes a heavy hipped mama
Got them great big legs
Shes a heavy hipped mama
She got them great big legs
Shes a heavy hipped mama, got them great big legs
Got just what it takes, oh yeah
Keep your hands off her
Keep them big mitts down
Keep your hands off her
So keep them big mitts down
So keep your hands off her, hear what I say
She dont belong to you
Well, her name is josie
Yes, her name is josie
Well, her name is josie
Yes, her name is josie
Well, her name is josie, but she aint so nosy
But mmmm, she sure is cozy
One more
Keep your hands off her
Keep them big mitts down
Keep your hands off her
So keep them big mitts down
So keep your hands off her, hear what I say
She dont belong to you
She dont belong to you

And when I'm writing, I write a lot anyway. I might write pages and pages of conversation between characters that don't necessarily end up in the book, or in the story I'm working on, because they're simply my way of getting to know the characters.

We started getting the script to different people and we were in the business of trying to fund it so we could get it off and running, and all the characters and sets designed and everything.
The whole process of getting licenses to broadcast, which took place decades ago, was done behind closed doors by powerful lobbies, and wealthy commercial interests got all the licenses with no public input, no congressional input for that matter.

We've carried that over into the visual development as well. We've designed quite an exotic cast of characters, but the last thing we want is to dictate to the players how their PCs should look. What we want to do is inspire.
