Without getting real personal, we liked our bass player Ed. He was a great guy and he was a good bass player but his playing was suited for a different style of band.

At the time, I didn't know that bass would not be enough for me. I'm not a bass player because bass is always a background instrument even to this very day.

I don't really have a favorite bass player. I listen to a lot of bluegrass. But then again, I'm not a typical bluegrass bass player. I was really into the Grateful Dead, and I still am - I don't listen to them too much, but for me they are a big influence.

Ben was more improvisational, and relied less on methodology, and basically is a guitarist who switched to bass, whereas Jeff has a more traditional approach to playing bass in a band, and has a great sense of what his band sounds like, and we lock up nicely.

So our ears got used to listening to jazz in the place that it was that the bass player could not play. No one really realized it and really addressed it until the bass players who could play their instrument came along and started doing something with it.

I love playing with Jeff. That's something I never really say in the press, but he's my favorite bass player. I've played right next to him for 10 years.

Player
Im a player..... girl I thought you knew
When you started messin around with me, knew I wouldnt commit to you
Cause Im a player...... and I know you cant see it in my eyes......
Everyone says that Im innocent, and it should come as no surprise....
That Im a player........... and I really think you need to know
That I cant love you right now baby, cause I need more time to grow.......
But when I do get ready to settle down....
Baby the first one Im calling is you
Oh....... when I do get ready to settle down,
Baby the first one Im calling is you
But until then.........
Im a player, and Ive traveled all around the world,
Ive broken many hearts, and it really hurts to say this to you girl
But Im a player........ and its kinda sad that it has to be this way,
But I dont wanna lock oyou down until Im ready, so right now, Im gonna play......
But when I do get ready to settle down....
Baby the first one Im calling is you
Oh....... when I do get ready to settle down,
Baby the first one Im calling is you
But until then.........
[bass guitar plays]
But when I do get ready to settle down....
Baby the first one Im calling is you
Oh....... when I do get ready to settle down,
Baby the first one Im calling is you
But until then.........

In 1972, I got my first electric bass and started playing the kind of instrument I play now. I found that the majority of musicians couldn't bear that. They are not used to listening to the bass because they think the bass is in the background to support them.

Lately Fish and I have been hooking up more, which is a good thing because it's just been a struggle for me as a bass player to play with someone who's so creative on the drums, and lately it's been really good, especially during sound checks.

I don't regard myself as a great classical or jazz pianist. I like country music, but I'm not a great player. I just like music. Drums 'n' bass is pretty exciting and I'd love to explore it.

Lavender Bassman
Listen to my bassman, he is lavender
His woman is his bass and he is loving her, loving her
Listen to the sounds hes giving
As he is living
True to lavender
Listen to the things my friend is saying now
A poetry of notes as he is playing now, playing now
Listen to the tales hes telling
Magic bass compelling
Lavender
Listen to my bass man, he is lavender
His fingerboards a highway, hes a traveler, traveler
Listen to his fingers making music
Hear his soul embarking
Lavender
Listen to my bass man, he is lavender
