At the time, I didn't know that bass would not be enough for me. I'm not a bass player because bass is always a background instrument even to this very day.

In 1972, I got my first electric bass and started playing the kind of instrument I play now. I found that the majority of musicians couldn't bear that. They are not used to listening to the bass because they think the bass is in the background to support them.

So our ears got used to listening to jazz in the place that it was that the bass player could not play. No one really realized it and really addressed it until the bass players who could play their instrument came along and started doing something with it.

Without getting real personal, we liked our bass player Ed. He was a great guy and he was a good bass player but his playing was suited for a different style of band.
I listened to many different types of instruments and music, and have always tried to look at the bass as an instrument as opposed to only a bass.

Slap That Bass
Zoom zoom zoom zoom
The world is in a mess
With politics and taxes
And people grinding axes
Theres no happiness
Zoom zoom zoom zoom
Rhythm lead your ace
The future doesnt fret me
If I can only get me
Someone to slap that bass
Happiness is not a riddle
When Im listening to that
Big bass fiddle
Slap that bass
Slap it till its dizzy
Slap that bass
Keep the rhythm busy
Zoom zoom zoom
Misery, youve got to go
Slap that bass
Use it like a tonic
Slap that bass
Keep your philharmonic
Zoom zoom zoom
And the milk and honeyll flow
Dictators would be better off
If they zoom zoom now and then
Today, you can see that the happiest men
All got rhythm
In which case
If you want a bauble
Slap that bass
Slap away your trouble
Learn to zoom zoom zoom
Slap that bass
(bridge)
Dictators would be better off
If they zoom zoom now and then
Today, you can see that the happiest men
All got rhythm
In which case
If you want a bauble
Slap that bass
Slap away your trouble
Learn to zoom zoom zoom

I don't really have a favorite bass player. I listen to a lot of bluegrass. But then again, I'm not a typical bluegrass bass player. I was really into the Grateful Dead, and I still am - I don't listen to them too much, but for me they are a big influence.

So the whole basis for jazz music is based on the fact that the bass player could not play his instrument.

I was always the sexy bass player in the background while Robin stood centre. Barry and I played it up a bit, gave 'em a bit of thigh.

Lavender Bassman
Listen to my bassman, he is lavender
His woman is his bass and he is loving her, loving her
Listen to the sounds hes giving
As he is living
True to lavender
Listen to the things my friend is saying now
A poetry of notes as he is playing now, playing now
Listen to the tales hes telling
Magic bass compelling
Lavender
Listen to my bass man, he is lavender
His fingerboards a highway, hes a traveler, traveler
Listen to his fingers making music
Hear his soul embarking
Lavender
Listen to my bass man, he is lavender

There was a time when fast playing and fretboard pyrotechnics on the bass were important to me and when I am recording a bass track, that is still very important to me.
The main thing that those two albums have in common aside from my music, which of course, a sense of it, you can recognize, it is that the bass on Infinite Search was playing much, much less like a bass.

Boyz With Da Bass
Intro:(mysterious music)
Absolutely no one under 17 will be admitted without parent or certified adult guardian.
Theyll fry your brain. theyre sick as hell!
Jolly good fun.
Youll die dancin!
Dark, gliding shapes that glide every long inch ...
Buy em or die a thousand deaths!
Chorus:
Heyy!
2 live crew
Boys with the bass!
You better know it!
Verse 1: [fresh kid ice]
Thats right yall, you heard it cause we said it
And if you cant read in the magazines,
You read about who? you know the crew!
Fresh outta pac
And the first to put the bass on the 24-track
Some said it wouldnt work, some said it wouldnt last
In new york, they say that the tempos too fast
You disregarded, but the albums got charted
We put em in the stores and millions habe bought it
An underground sound, not liked by radio
You hear it in the cars and at the dicso
On the airwaves, we misbehave
Were too bold, too rugged in our nasty ways
From dirty minds come dirty rhymes
Were not gonna beg for your time
You dont play it? thats cool with me
But somehow, our bass still reaches the street
As long as we got it, you can get it
People want the bass, so some try to steal it
From behind our back, and not in our face
cause 2 live is the crew, the boys with the bass!
Chorus
Verse 2: [brother marquis]
Holdin out own in the south-east region
When you come to the bottom, pledge to our allegiance
Im glad to say that were the proud owners,
The rock-and-rollers, you cant us this over
The name of the game is supply and demand
We supply the bass while you demand our jams
We could not wait to bring our bass to you
Because in this game, you lag, you lose
See, we serve our bass raw, straight up and not false
This is the kind you dance to, and not on 8-ball
Plenty of bass, the beat, and the rhyme
That my homeboy mr. mixx carefully designed
Hittin hard as hell, and always droppin
Bass is the reason why you are rockin
When you hear our songs, and you see our face
Put two and two together; were the boys with the bass!
Chorus
(its the best in this city!)

When you have an acoustic bass in the ensemble it really changes the dynamic of the record because it kind of forces everybody to play with a greater degree of sensitivity and nuance because it just has a different kind of tone and spectrum than the electric bass.
