I love playing with Jeff. That's something I never really say in the press, but he's my favorite bass player. I've played right next to him for 10 years.

Without getting real personal, we liked our bass player Ed. He was a great guy and he was a good bass player but his playing was suited for a different style of band.
I don't really have a favorite bass player. I listen to a lot of bluegrass. But then again, I'm not a typical bluegrass bass player. I was really into the Grateful Dead, and I still am - I don't listen to them too much, but for me they are a big influence.

Ben was more improvisational, and relied less on methodology, and basically is a guitarist who switched to bass, whereas Jeff has a more traditional approach to playing bass in a band, and has a great sense of what his band sounds like, and we lock up nicely.

At the time, I didn't know that bass would not be enough for me. I'm not a bass player because bass is always a background instrument even to this very day.

Pump Up The Bass
Artist: dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince
[fresh prince]
In the place to be
Dj jazzy jeff and yours truly the fresh prince
Ay jeff, do me a favor, give em just a lil touch of the bass
Not a lot, just a lil touch jeff
Word word
Ay jeff do me a favor man, jazz it up
Now bring it all back
Yo man now break it down and let me go for mine
When I first started out, jeff used to come to my house
Just as soon as school let out, he used to
Come to my crib, and you know what we did?
We bugged out like two little kids, word
Jeff on the wheels, and me on the m.i.c.
A better combination there could never be
So lets go back, for old times sake
Yo jeff! (what? ) pump up the bass!
I . like . my . music . loud!
The volume, pumpin, the kickdrum thumpin
The people jumpin, up out there seats
When this record comes on, you think somethings wrong
The bass is too strong
You dont have to check your record, its not defective
Its just the way we wanted it, pump it, get it?
We like it loud, strong like a magnum force
I am the lyricist, jeff is the rhythm source
This combination, is virtually omnipotent
That means invincible, you know, dominant
So dont you cross our path, just stay out our face
Or well knock you down, pump up the bass!
Yo jeff man, how bout a funky scratch
Now get funky with it
Now bring in the snare
Now break it down and bring it all back to me
Now pump up the bass!
Im hyped -- psyched up
And Im flowin, so come on lets go in
To the next segment, of this hip-hop fantasy
You say this cant be happening, why cant it be?
Its an equation, mathematically correct
Its jeff + prince, equals, hit records
Sounds too easy? word, I know it does
You wanna know why? well yo its cause
Me and jeff, oh, jeff and i, excuse me
Blend like kool-aid, and flow like an uzi
Thats why we cant be taken or broken or braken, whatever
And if you think we can, youre mistaken, were clever
Cause all we did to make this record a hit
Was turn down the treble, pump up the bass kit
At the same time the volume was increased
Adding more strength, to this masterpiece
Of poetry, by now you know its me
Poet, creativity, pushin, to out destiny
I am on the m-i-c, jeffery is the disc jockey
? keep us company, the human beat box ready c
Backed up by a family, and that is all we need
So that we can be successful as we want to be
The future is in front of me so here is a taste
Of the future of hip-hop jeff, pump up the bass!
Yo jeff one more scratch man
Ready rock c man, give jeff a hand

A Boyhood Sporting Hero
Most boys have their sporting heroes and mine played Gaelic Football
The mighty Mick O Connell the greatest I recall
But Mick O played for Kerry and Cork my favourite team
And to play football good as him was many school boy's dream
The finest Gaelic Footballer that I have ever seen
Not rough or hard in any way but classical and clean
And though that was many years ago and far so far away
Of great player from Valentia the memory with me stay.
When Mick O's playing days were over he faded from the scene
But memories of his playing feats will remain evergreen
His high fielding and kicking and his passing of the ball
The complete Gaelic Footballer the greatest of them all.
He never hogged the limelight he seemed so quiet and shy
But he was sporting hero to many school going boy
And even many who did not support Kerry will still tell you today
That Valentia's Mick O Connell was the best they had seen play.
My hero played for Kerry and Cork my favourite team
And to be good a player as him an early teenage dream
But as a Gaelic Footballer I never made the grade
And I won't be remembered for any game I played.

In 1972, I got my first electric bass and started playing the kind of instrument I play now. I found that the majority of musicians couldn't bear that. They are not used to listening to the bass because they think the bass is in the background to support them.

A gamer playing finds another way
A gamer playing doesn't change.
A gamer playing finds another way,
To ensure a familiar game played...
Is perfected to those unsuspecting it.
One trained to charm,
Only becomes accustomed...
To using the same devices.
Shown early that whatever works...
Delivers to satisfy with desired 'perks'.
To please with the releasing of sighs,
At the expense of one duped...
With tears to drip as the gamer delights.
A gamer playing doesn't change.
A gamer playing finds another way,
To ensure a familiar game played...
Is perfected to those unsuspecting it.
And,
If one is seen to be agonized...
THAT is the affect the game player expects!

Lavender Bassman
Listen to my bassman, he is lavender
His woman is his bass and he is loving her, loving her
Listen to the sounds hes giving
As he is living
True to lavender
Listen to the things my friend is saying now
A poetry of notes as he is playing now, playing now
Listen to the tales hes telling
Magic bass compelling
Lavender
Listen to my bass man, he is lavender
His fingerboards a highway, hes a traveler, traveler
Listen to his fingers making music
Hear his soul embarking
Lavender
Listen to my bass man, he is lavender

My Favorite Girl
My favorite girl, oh, shes my favorite girl, dont you know,
My favorite girl, oh, shes my favorite girl.
You walked into my life, your love was so new,
And nothing will ever change my feelings for you,
Well, you were so far away, now I am close to you, girl,
So let us run away, our heart thats waiting will stay.
My favorite...
Theres so much I like in you I cant go on,
I wanted a girl like you Ive looked so long,
Girl, nothing will make us wrong, I know our love is too strong,
Lets leave the rest behind, our dreams ask what we will find.
My favorite...
My favorite...
(rap:) shes my favorite girl, the one Im always thinking of, that one.
(rap:) my favorite girl, the one I love.
My favorite... (repeat & fade ad lib)

Pop Goes The World
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
Pop goes the world, by men without hats
Johnny played guitar, jenny played bass.
Name of the band is the human race.
Everybody tell me have you heard? pop goes the world.
Jenny played keyboard, johnny played drums,
Called little baby and a big bonhomme
Everybody tell me have you heard? pop goes the world.
It goes something like this: (p p p pop)
Johnny and jenny had a crazy dream,
See their pictures in a magazine.
Every little boy needs a girl.
Pop goes the world.
Jenny and johnny getting smart (it seems)
Made more money on a movie screen.
Every little nest needs a bird.
Pop goes the world.
One two three and four is five,
Everybody here is a friend of mine.
Whatever happened to the duke of earl?
Pop goes the world.
Six seven eight and nine is ten,
Send al gunn to see the doctor (ben)
Say what planet are we on? the third!
Pop goes the world.
And every time I wonder where the world went wrong,
End up lying on my face going ringy dingy ding dong
And every time I wonder if the world is right,
End up in some disco dancin all night & day.
Johnny played guitar, jenny played bass,
Name of the band is the human race.
Everybody tell me have you heard? pop goes the world.
Johnny played guitar, jenny played bass,
Aint nobody couldnt take their place.
Everybody tell me have you heard? pop goes the world.....

Player
Im a player..... girl I thought you knew
When you started messin around with me, knew I wouldnt commit to you
Cause Im a player...... and I know you cant see it in my eyes......
Everyone says that Im innocent, and it should come as no surprise....
That Im a player........... and I really think you need to know
That I cant love you right now baby, cause I need more time to grow.......
But when I do get ready to settle down....
Baby the first one Im calling is you
Oh....... when I do get ready to settle down,
Baby the first one Im calling is you
But until then.........
Im a player, and Ive traveled all around the world,
Ive broken many hearts, and it really hurts to say this to you girl
But Im a player........ and its kinda sad that it has to be this way,
But I dont wanna lock oyou down until Im ready, so right now, Im gonna play......
But when I do get ready to settle down....
Baby the first one Im calling is you
Oh....... when I do get ready to settle down,
Baby the first one Im calling is you
But until then.........
[bass guitar plays]
But when I do get ready to settle down....
Baby the first one Im calling is you
Oh....... when I do get ready to settle down,
Baby the first one Im calling is you
But until then.........
