There can be no compromise with war; it cannot be reformed or controlled; cannot be disciplined into decency or codified into common sense.

School days are the unhappiest in the whole span of human existence. They are full of dull, unintelligible tasks, new and unpleasant ordinances, with brutal violations of common sense and common decency.

I see the great continuities in New Zealand history as being decency and common sense and up until now when we've confronted these things we've been able to talk them through, and I'm sure we will with this issue as well.

Controlled and Fenced
The sickness that continues to brew,
In the minds of people...
Should be of no surprise at all!
It is a succession of events.
Witnessed by those with common sense.
And those who are lost...
Continue to pay the cost!
And that price is getting rather dense,
For those with mindsets kept controlled...
And fenced!

Free to Love But
Free to love but...
Not convinced of it.
Wanting more to condense love,
Into something called 'common sense'.
Knowing nothing is common,
About that feeling!
Free to love but...
Overprotective.
And afraid to be hurt by it.
As if love is filled with pain.
As if to give it someone gains,
An upper hand to manipulate.
And many wish it can be controlled,
With understanding conditions issued.
Although wanting nothing to do with feeling confined.
But that's what love is...
An entrapment of some kind in our minds,
We wish freed.

Common sense and a sense of humor are the same thing, moving at different speeds. A sense of humor is just common sense, dancing.

We are finite creatures. Our lives are small and can only scientifically consider a small part of reality. What's common for us is just a sliver of what's available. We can only see so much of the electromagnetic spectrum. We can only delve so deep into extensions of space. Common sense applies to that which we can access. But common sense is just that. Common. If total sense is what we want, we should be prepared to accept that we shouldn't call infinity weird or strange. The results we've arrived at by accepting it are valid, true within the system we use to understand, measure, predict and order the universe. Perhaps the system still needs perfecting, but at the end of day, history continues to show us that the universe isn't strange. We are.

The Earthly Bias....
you are
this man torn between
sky and sea
you belong to the earth
take note
pray
that the sky shall not blind you
neither the
sea to drown you
take the middle
compromise, compromise,
compromise
always have that
compromise
the earth is still the most
beautiful place
to live
give it the bias
that for the meantime
it deserves

Common sense invents and constructs no less than its own field than science does in its domain. It is, however, in the nature of common sense not to be aware of this situation.

Value Of It All
When does the teaching process end?
And the learning of lessons begin...
Starting the arrival of experience?
And not far behind is a common sense,
Waiting to be triggered without a nudge?
It is there connecting all of this,
Without a budge!
Ready when needed.
However...
If a mind relies too much on books,
To lead to a life reflecting what is written...
As common as it may seem,
A sense expected is missing.
And if a mind begins to lose sight
Of experience, lessons taught
AND common sense...
There will be problems.
Big time ego ones!
Who pays?
And at what cost?
Especially...
If the value of it all is lost!

The Ghost: Book II (excerpt)
...
Pomposo (insolent and loud),
Vain idol of a scribbling crowd,
Whose very name inspires an awe,
Whose ev'ry word is sense and law,
For what his greatness hath decreed,
Like laws of Persia and of Mede,
Sacred thro' all the realm of wit,
Must never of repeal admit;
Who, cursing flatt'ry, is the tool
Of ev'ry fawning, flatt'ring fool;
Who wit with jealous eye surveys,
And sickens at another's praise;
Who, proudly seiz'd of learning's throne,
Now damns all learning but his own;
Who scorns those common wares to trade in,
Reas'ning, convincing, and persuading,
But makes each sentence current pass
With "Puppy," "Coxcomb," "Scoundrel," "Ass";
For 'tis with him a certain rule,
The folly's prov'd when he calls fool;
Who, to increase his native strength,
Draws words six syllables in length,
With which, assisted with a frown
By way of club, he knocks us down;
Who 'bove the vulgar dares to rise,
And sense of decency defies,
(For this same decency is made
Only for bunglers in the trade,
And, like the cobweb laws, is still
Broke thro' by great ones when they will)--
Pomposo, with strong sense supplied,
Supported, and confirm'd by pride,
His comrades' terrors to beguile,
"Grinn'd horribly a ghastly smile:"
Features so horrid, were it light,
Would put the Devil himself to flight.

Common Sense Is Missing
Common Sense?
If it is so common,
Why is it so rarely displayed?
People who succeed academically...
Sometimes find it hard to mix
With those who are suppose to lack
A worldly knowledge and quick wit!
Those who spend their lives in books...
May have minds of intelligence,
But few know how to cook!
Or know how to hold a conversation...
Without returning an 'all knowing' look!
With a raised eyebrow...
And a half smile crooked!
And common sense is missing.
That is realized before a word is said!
There is something about spontaneity...
Many find difficult to express from their heads!
Or able to exchange...
When brains are prepared to regurgitate,
Details obtained about 'historical' ancient remains!
And common sense...
If there's any left,
Is not expected to come from the lips
Of minds so far removed, dull and shamefully inept!

Ultimately, the basic issue is whether America will provide global leadership that springs from the unity and the integrity of the American people, or whether extremist doctrines, the manipulation of the truth, will define America's role in the world. At stake is nothing less than our nation's soul. … But I am not discouraged. I really am not. I do not despair for our country. I never do. I believe, as I always have, the essential decency and compassion and common sense of the American people will prevail.
