I don't think I even knew how big we were at the time. It was mad. I gained a lot through East 17 and I'm grateful for being able to have that experience.

Wild East
(ian hunter)
Well its tuesday night
How Id like to be inside at this time
Watchin t.v. is killin me
Its such a drag tonight
I feel like jason
Just found a rusty fleece
And the cyclops all laughin at me
You cant tame wild east
Wild east wild east
Wild east wild east
Now some cynic from the methadone clinic
He keeps on bothering me
He writes all my lyrics backwards on diapers
And hangs em from the local trees
Watch out, white boy
Dont argue with a sawn off piece
Im a crazy son, mama
I love the grease of wild east
Wild east wild east
Wild east wild east
Wild east wild east
Wild east wild east
Now jezebel dont feel too well, she talks to jane
bout a one way conversation on a subway train
Hey! they took away her wallet and her valise
Love hate, love hate, love hate, love hate, wild east
Wild east wild east
Wild east wild east
Wild east wild east
Wild east come on crazy wild east
(repeat and fade)

Whatever It Is
Whatever It is that I am thanking...
And however It knows what It does.
I am grateful to have It know my existence!
Grateful that It enters my heart and my soul,
Grateful that It knows!
Whatever It is that forgets and forgives...
And removes stumbling blocks from my life as I live.
Whatever It is before language came to be,
In my mind I carry It...
And in 'It' It carries me!
Whatever It is that I am thanking...
And however It knows what It does.
I am grateful to have It know my existence!
Grateful that It enters my heart and my soul,
Grateful that It knows!
Grateful It knows whatever It is...
So grateful It knows It within me grows!

A Fine Culture
They were indeed simple people
the people of the east
A FINE CULTURE they did have
the people of the east
A FINE CULTURE
the east should have given the rest
when the west brought out the 'machine'
the east brought out the 'human'
Today's world is not lacking in machine
Today's world is lacking in human
Today's east is sending 'productive men' all over
the east should have sent 'human men' all over
How did the east stray?
when did it loose it's way?
The east then found everything in simplicity
simplicity was it's strength and beauty
simplicity gave the east it's integrity
simplicity never ever gave the east an inferiority
Today the east mocks the west
the 'material' wealth of the west..has
put to rest...the
true spirit of the east
We blame it on simplicity
we say we were plundered due to our simplicity
a handed down book on simplicity
only became a liability..we say
What the west had gained
everybody did gain...the 'machine'
what the east had lost
everbody did loose...the 'human'
Today what are we in
an 'un human' man is managing a dangerous dumb 'machine'...and
THAT'S THE DANGER WE ARE IN...without
a fine culture

Grateful
I carry you up in my arms
Hear you sing yourself to sleep
The sky opens up over your room
You sail into your moonlight dreams
Theres so much more than we can see
Theres so much more than we can see
All we are and all we need is
All we are and all we need is
All we are is all we need to be
Grateful, oh grateful
Grateful, oh grateful
I play this guitar, sing these songs
It changes me, instantly
Love is too simple a word
For here comes the sun in the morning
Suddenly happiness
Comes rolling out from inside me
All we are and all we need is
All we are and all we need is
All we are is all we need to be
Grateful, oh grateful
Grateful, oh grateful
I carry you up in my arms
Hear you sing yourself to sleep
The sky opens up over your room
You sail into your moonlight dreams
Theres so much more than we can see
Theres so much more than we can see
All we are and all we need is
All we are and all we need is
All we are is all we need to be
Grateful, oh grateful
Grateful, oh grateful
(all we are and all we need is)
(all we are and all we need is...)

You Never know
Look out heart…
"I am grateful"…is not love…
Doing something for someone…
And getting…(I'm grateful) …
Is a watch out word…
You heard…"I can't love you"…
I'm just grateful, to you…
Oops…
Just grateful…?
Just grateful…!
You know…how I…feel about you…
And you…say…just grateful…
Damn! …
I expected much more…
From such a special touch…
Which was…I know now… a…
I am grateful…kind of touch…
How was I to know…?
My heart is on the floor…
Door…wide open…
Eye…running wet…
And yet…
I mis-judged-what-…
That look and touch was…
I guess I am grateful…as well…

Blessings
I should be grateful
For the colours God paints his sky.
For the twinkle in my lovers eye
Even when she told me goodbye.
Grateful
For the kiss of the breeze
Moving bliss through the trees
With a perfume to seize
That dawning first light.
Such colours are these
That are swept in its flight.
Who afforded this dewdropp scent? .
Rainclouds applauded
Magnificent! .
We should be grateful
For lifes' plateful.
Stealing moonlit walks
Healing midnight talks.
Rain goes
Then rainbows.
Sunsets kiss the ocean
Painted with such devotion
With some heavenly notion.
Grateful
For fragrance
Early morning lends
And your sexy smile
Secret lover
As our evening ends.
No wish to recover
When blue moonbeam descends.

When things done, results come.
The night is finally over
The month will soon be October
North east wind makes days cold
Past experience makes us bold
As we further go
We forget things ago
As we look ahead
We are bound to success
Let past experiences be the fuels
Of the machine of the present gradual
Through the success of future into unusual
Where the goals are gained for dual

Hard For Them to Believe
I was asked,
At a time...
If I knew what I was doing?
As if my thoughts,
Could not produce my deeds.
As if my efforts,
Did not match where I lived.
Since I was born and lived in the ghetto.
And I should not be aware or know,
Of those things I did!
As If my blackness was for them limited!
Like it was for friends I had,
And some relatives.
All believing then I was trying to be white...
And not the black neighborhood kid!
Who did for me,
What I knew was right!
They believed I should be,
That kind to clown and be down to Earth.
And not have a mind as creative as mine!
With dreams to fulfill...
That broke down barriars and walls,
Others believed I existed behind!
And not to know my own value or worth.
Or reach for heights...
Few I knew took effort to climb!
I was asked,
At a time...
If I knew what I was doing?
I am not asked 'that' question anymore.
Today,
Some try to downplay...
My affect!
But I had always known,
To be grateful to be blessed.
And let God handle the rest!
I was asked,
At a time...
If I knew what I was doing?
Of course I knew.
From the very beginning.
But the few who did not know...
Now they do too!
And nothing has changed...
From where I live,
To what I do.
And that is a fact...
Hard for them to believe!
That I can say who I am.
Be who I am.
Stay where I am and know it!
AND achieve!

Thanksgiving
What a day to dismantle a roller-coaster.
Well, they are taking it down--
the tracks are all over the ground
and the ties drawn up. The ticket office
is shut, the calliope covered with tarps.
These workmen move their rides
from town to town, with the weather,
and a day gained dismantling
is a day to them. They are grateful
for the day gained, and for the silence
in a park where only ducks and I remain.
As if against the numb fall sky,
sounds of hammers and crowbars
and the changing voice of one man's oldest son
rebound from pond to light pole and away.
Tomorrow they'll be on their way
to Arkansas, or a place they haven't
been before; today they're making time.
Today they're making time. The doors
of the van are open, the van is dark.
The cars stand there in a line, as if
they are not well or have something
to tell the man who stands on the tail-gate.
This corner of the park is nearly flat.

Those Who Laughed With Time To Waste
I never sought to be taken for a fool.
But there were those foolish enough,
Not to believe I was serious.
And perhaps that seriousness,
Had been misinterpreted.
And I have never elected,
To see them in that way.
Anyone making attempts,
To express their gifts and talents...
With intent,
Gained my respect.
Since I knew what that took.
I knew too well what that meant.
With those comments made by some and done,
And time that has come many have tried to shun...
I still have not been the one to evaluate.
A progress made.
However...
Few I knew have made great strides.
While those who laughed with time to waste...
Seem to have vanished to other places,
To grace their faces with fates they've faked.
Or wish to make attempts to do it.

I Owe Who I Am to You
How grateful I am,
To have lived.
And You have allowed it.
To experience seasons,
With changes that exist.
In an acceptance,
Of Your offerings...
That come and go,
To be as is.
And to be able to express this...
In a completedness,
I do not resist.
With an acknowledgement,
My life on Earth without You...
Would leave me less blessed,
And prehaps without gifts.
How grateful I am,
To have lived.
And You have allowed it.
To lead me to learn and to grow.
Knowing I owe who I am to You!

Autobiography in the Hanquerian style
We got a new class teacher this fall.
Head says we should be grateful
on account of he’s highly ‘qualified’. Guess that means
he gets paid more. So he’s the one
should be grateful. In my experience
which don’t hold for much
but which ain’t nothing neitherways:
life out here don’t pay much heed
to paper ‘qualifications’.
Now, ‘qualified’ is something
of another colour altogether. That’s earned
with a diff’rent sort of paper.
We’ll see.

I didn't come east of the Mississippi for the first time in my life until I was 26 years of age, but I knew. I read magazines, I listened to radio, I watched television. I knew there was something out there, and I wanted a part of it.

Time and Experience
I found the past in my present
I built the future on my past
I found the gift of today
When I thought about what
The future has to offer
Where is the wisdom in experience
If there is no folly in wisdom
What's the real meaning of death
If our spirits live forever
Times never change
But circumstances do
I'll let mystery play with the future
Surprises couple with the present
And experience mourn the past
Because sun always rises from the east
And each day always comes to an end
Experience is not chained to wisdom
Nor is folly tied to bad results
But to the circumstances that burden
Our past, present and future because
Time is always anxious for the future
Experience loves the present
And wisdom never divorces the past

I Have So Much To Be Grateful To God For
I HAVE SO MUCH TO BE GRATEFUL TO GOD FOR
I have so much to be grateful to G-d for
I can walk -
I can feel the freshness of the wind and light this morning-
I can still think and write clearly-
All the years with those I love and have been loved by
I have so much to be grateful to G-d for-
