Thanksgiving
What a day to dismantle a roller-coaster.
Well, they are taking it down--
the tracks are all over the ground
and the ties drawn up. The ticket office
is shut, the calliope covered with tarps.
These workmen move their rides
from town to town, with the weather,
and a day gained dismantling
is a day to them. They are grateful
for the day gained, and for the silence
in a park where only ducks and I remain.
As if against the numb fall sky,
sounds of hammers and crowbars
and the changing voice of one man's oldest son
rebound from pond to light pole and away.
Tomorrow they'll be on their way
to Arkansas, or a place they haven't
been before; today they're making time.
Today they're making time. The doors
of the van are open, the van is dark.
The cars stand there in a line, as if
they are not well or have something
to tell the man who stands on the tail-gate.
This corner of the park is nearly flat.

Make Tomorrow
Put on the dress in which you were married
Pull down the veil til your eyes are hid
Can you remember where we both came from
Let us do as we did
Look at tomorrow today
Making tomorrow today
Making tomorrow today
Making tomorrow today
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow today
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow today
Put back the photo under your window
Put down the phone that you hold in your hand
Put away these things that stand in between us
Let us be what we can
When it seems
Hopeless
When it seems
Hopeless
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow today
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow today
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow today
What better measure of what you were doing here
Then what you can leave behind
All the children of your children's children
Do you ever think what they're going to find
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow
Where the sacred meet the scared
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow
Where the dreamer's dream is dared
In each of us
A dream can burn like the sun
Let's try it all one more time
To get this lesson learned
Sitting up in a spaceship
Looking down at the earth
You wonder what they all stuggling for
What's it all really worth
Making tomorrow today
Making tomorrow today
Make tomorrow
Make tomorrow

Stand In Line
Ten men stand in line
At the gates of the cemetery on tuesday morning
Theyre not open today
And ten moms stand in line
At maternity ward
Theyre not bringin no babies out to play
Anytime today
Whats a nice girl like you doin
Walkin around this part of town?
See you sometime tomorrow
And ten men stand in line
Waitin for some personality to be put out on the corner
Today aint garbage day
Aint no grabage taken today

Palisades Park
Run run runnin all the rides are runnin
Run run runnin all the rides are runnin
Last night I took a walk in the dark
A steamin place called palisades park
Turned around to see what I could see
Thats where the girls are
I took a ride on a shoopby shoo
The girl I sat beside was awful cool
And when we start I gave that girl a hug
My heart was flyin
Up like a rocket ship
Down like a roller coaster
Left like a loopdy loop
And around like a merry go round
We ate and ate at a hot dog stand
We danced around to a rockin band
And we we quit I gave that girl a hug
In the tunnel of love
You never know how great a kiss can be
Until you stop at the bottom of a ferris wheel
In the tunnel of love down at palisades park
Run run runnin all the rides are runnin
Yeah
Oh my god
Those coconuts are bad in the ass damn (? ? ? )
We ate and ? ? ? at a hot dog stand
We danced around to a rockin band
And we we quit I gave that girl a hug
In the tunnel of love
You never know how great a kiss can be

Run run runnin all the rides are runnin

Dont Look Down
Dont look down
Theyre making sorta crazy sounds
Dont look down, no
Dont know who else came to kneel
On this empty battlefield
But when I hear that crazy sound, I dont look down
From central park to shanty town
I always hear that crazy sound
From new york to shanty town
Theres always something else
Dont look down, no
I went this morning to the cemetary
To see old rudy valentino buried
Lipstick traces on his name
He never looked down
cause they were making crazy sounds
From central park to shanty town
He always heard that crazy sound
Theres always something else
Dont look down, no
When I see you standing there
I cant see the clothes you wear
I just hear that crazy sound
And I cant look down
From central park to shanty town
Ive always heard that crazy sound
From new york to shanty town
Theres always something else
Dont look down, no
Dont look down
Dont look, dont look down
No I wont be bored I wont be there
Look at life its no piece of cake
When I hear that crazy sound
I dont look down
From central park to shanty town
I always hear that crazy sound
From new york to shanty town

Movin' On
Mmmmm Mmmmmm
Mmmmm Mmmmmm.
I get up in the morning and its just another day
Pack up my belongings, Ive got to get away.
Jump in to a taxi and the time is gettin tight
I go to keep on movin I got a show tonight
Mmmm,
And Im movin on, movin on from town to town
Movin on, baby, yeah Im never touchin the ground. Yeah.
I take it to the ticket gate and have another bowl
headin for the bordengate Im feelin pretty low
Fifteen minutes later, Im sittin on my plane
fastened in my safety belt Im takin off again
And Im movin on, movin on from town to town
Movin on, baby, yeah Im never touchin the ground.
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh. Yeah.
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh.
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh.
And Im movin on, movin on from town to town
Movin on, I cant seem to stop now.
(Improv. Guitar Solo)
I got to move on, move on from town to town.
I got to move on, I never seem to slow down.
Oh, I got to move on, move on from town to town.
I got to move on, I never seem to slow down.

The Underground Carpark
This place is the darkest of dark and the blackest of black
as I look all around after just reversing back.
I parked here because it’s usually a secure well lit car park,
but the lights are off and I’m in the dark.
I’ll switch off my lights I don’t want to cause undue attention down here,
and I’ll just sit back and wait for the ceiling lights to reappear.
I’ve been waiting for a good fifteen minutes and still there’s no light,
isn’t it odd how these things always happen at night.
With my window half open I can hear unusual noises that I haven’t heard before.
Now I can hear something heavy being dragged along the floor.
How can the makers of these noises see what they are doing in the dark?
It’s certainly unnerving; I wish more vehicles would enter the car park,
I feel tempted to turn on all my car’s lights and the main beam,
but that would show my whereabouts, and allow me to be seen.
I think that I had better shut my window and secure all the doors
I don’t want to end up being dragged across the floor.
I’ll just try and stay calm by taking deep breaths, and closing my eyes.
What was that..? Something has rubbed against my cars near side.
It shook the whole of the car; oh why can’t I vanish and be elsewhere?
Something else has just passed through my car as I was sitting here.
It’s time to get out of here fast, I’ve had enough of this dark,
but my lights won’t come on and my engine won’t start.
God, I’m stuck with no apparent way of getting out of here,
it’s gone quiet and still, and perhaps there’s nothing to fear.
The car has shook and I think someone or something’s on the roof,
no one would believe this; they just wouldn’t believe the truth.
I can’t believe that this sort of thing could actually happen,
it’s straight out of a movie set of New York and Manhattan.
The car is still and what was on the roof seems to have gone,
again I’ve tried my ignition and lights, but they won’t come on.
I’ve never before been in a dark space for this amount of time
and I’m seeing shades of black as though I’m not quite blind.
I swear a greyish figure flashed by in front of my car,
but I can’t be sure, it’s impossible to see that far.
There was definitely something there, it flashed by again
and one passed in the rear view mirror exactly the same.
What a time for my lights to fail and the engine not to start?
This is supernatural and definitely a world apart.
Despite everything I’ve got to stay calm and do nothing untoward,
so I’ll slowly remove the flashlight from the car’s dashboard.
As I switch on the flashlight I scanned around the other parked cars
and inside them are ghostly white figures covered with scars.
When I shine the light into their faces they turn and point at me,
as if they were giving me a warning of how things will be.
I immediately tried to turn on my engine and lights once more,
then the car park lights came on, and lit up the roof and floor.
The ghostly images all vanished from the cars and from sight,
and I decided I no longer wanted to park here tonight.

The 'Poem A Day' Project ~ Day 257
I’m a happy dog at the park
I yelp and woof and bark
Along with the sound
Us dogs run around
I’m a happy dog at the park
I’m a happy dog at the park
You may think me off the mark
But I’m not by mistake
In the mud by the lake
I’m a happy dog at the park
I’m a happy dog at the park
I hunt like a big hairy shark
When the bunnies trail
Puts a spring in my tail
I’m a happy dog at the park
I’m a happy dog at the park
I’m glad that some bright spark
Brought a ball to throw
Now off I go
I’m a happy dog at the park
I’m a happy dog at the park
I’ll be wagging well into the dark
Enjoy fresh air and fun
Is my tip everyone
I’m a happy dog at the park

Silver Eagle Express
(kinky friedman, roger friedman)
And Id ride the silver eagle to the last town on the line,
Railroad ties are not my friend the only ties that bind.
Just watch the troubled countryside gently fall away,
Silver eagle, hold me, guide me, roll me homeward from today.
Lose the track of time and let it flow back,
Stoke the ancient furnace into flames.
Running barefoot in the cinders of the moat pack
Hoppin bedtime rides with the outlaw jesse james.
But now my hearts a worn and weary vessel.
I been haulin dreams that never seem to last.
Once I slept beside a trembling trestle,
Woke up lost across the rusty lifelines to the past.
And Id ride the silver eagle to the last town on the line,
Railroad ties are not my friend the only ties that bind.
Just watch the troubled countryside gently fall away,
Silver eagle, hold me, guide me, roll me homeward from today.
Freedoms only station to station,
A paper suitcase on the track of time.
Aint hard to tell a hard luck situation,
Aint hard to tell a homeless country poet out of rhyme.
Im gonna ride the silver eagle to the last town on the line,
Theres nothing to remember if theres nothing to remind.
From the gentle texas sunshine to the colorado snow
Aint no one here to hold you, boy, when the good lord lets you go.

Lying In The Park
On the green grass
And a blue sky
Peace and sunshine
Peace and sunshine
Soon,
Soon Im going bye ? ? ?
Now I just want ? ? ? city
Lookin for the park
Lying down in the park
Lying down in the park
Yeah yeah yeah
See the momma
Down walking the dogs
Down by the fountains
Down by the fountains
Child, child
Eating sandwich and sweets
And your sitting by my fountain
Cooling my feet
In the park
Just before dark
Birds sing so smooth
But the park shut soon
What we going to do
Fine we gonna have to move
But Ill see you tomorrow
Lying down in the park
Lying down in the park
Lying down in the park
Yeah yeah yeah
Feel the warm breeze
Cool by ? ? ?
Seen my good friend
Seen my good friend
So, so
In the afternoon
And we take us for your city ? ? ?
Lookin for the park
Lying down in the park
Lying down in the park
Lying down in the park baby
See that young girl
There she goes man
See that rich bum
The old men playing chess
See that young girl
With that flower dress
See that young girl
With the flower dress
Well soon Im going bye
Now I just might move on
Looking for the park
Lying down in the park
Lying down in the park
Lying down in the park baby
Ill be there
Ill meet you there
Oh baby
Yeah

It's Music Time
It's Music Time - what shall I do?
It's Music Time today.
I haven't really thought it through
And it's Music Time today.
It doesn't have to last too long
This Music Time today.
We haven't finished our number work
We could miss Music Time today.
But Johnny and Jane will go berserk
If there's no Music Time today.
We could always sing that assembly song
At Music Time today.
I know they'll want to get the instruments out
At Music Time today.
But can I stand all that crashing about?
When it's Music Time today.
Maybe we could take turns to play?
At Music Time today.
And if there's too much noise we'll just put them away
At Music Time today.

Roller
Oh where is she woman
Shes only here for the sun
Its now youll discover
Shes only here for the fun
And who will move over
Sweet talker choosin her side
And its then, its all over
She just along for the ride
She s a roller
Shes just a roller
Bet shell roll her life away
One town is just like another
One man will just never do
Dont turn around
When she calls out your name
Shes gonna break you in two
But shes a roller
Shes just a roller
Rolling time come today
One town is just like another
One man will just never, never do
Dont turn around
When she calls out your name
Shes gonna snap you in two

Boys Are Back In Town
Guess who just got back today
Them wildout boys, that'd been away
Haven't changed, had much to say
But man I still think them cats are great
They were asking if you were around
How you was, where you could be found
Told them you were living downtown
Driving all the old men crazy
The Boys are back in town (The boys are back in town)
(I Said) The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town (The boys are back in town)
The boys are back in town (The boys are back in town)
You know that chic who used to dance a lot?
Every night she'd be on the floor, shaken what she got
Man when I tell you she was cool she was red hot
I mean she was steamin'
And that time over at Johnny's place
When this chic got up and slapped Johnny's face
Man we just fell about the place
What that chic don't wanna know forget 'er
The boys are back in town (The boys are back in town)
(I said) The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town (The boys are back in town)
The boys are back in town (The boys are back in town)
Spread the word around
Guess who's back in town
You spread the word around
Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Dino's bar and grill
The drinks will flow and blood would spill
If the boys wanna fight you better let 'em
That kid rocks down at the corner blasting out my favourite song
The nights are getting warmer and won't be long
Wont be long till the summer comes
Now that the boys are here again
The boys are back in town (the boys are back in town)
The boys are back in town (the boys are back in town)
The boys are back in town (the boys are back in town)
(Spread the word around)
The boys are back in town (The boys are back in town)
(The boys are back, the boys are back)
The boys are back in town again
They're hanging out at Dino's
The boys are back in town again

The Sound Of The Crowd
Put your hand in a party wave
Pass around
Make a shroud pulling combs through a backwash frame
Find the copies in a carbon mount
Pass around
Stroke a pocket with a print of a laughing sound
Get around town
Get around town
Where the people look good
Where the music is loud
Get around town
No need to stand proud
Add your voice to the sound of the crowd
The shades from a pencil peer
Pass around
A fold in an eyelid brushed with fear
The lines on a compact guide
Pass around
A hat with alignment worn insde
Get around town
Get around town
Where the people look good
Where the music is loud
Get around town
No need to stand proud
Add your voice to the sound of the crowd
Get in line now
Get in line now
Stay in time with the rhythm and rhyme
Get around town
Get around town
Where the people look good
Where the music is loud
Get around town
No need to stand proud
Add your voice to the sound of the crowd
Get around town
Get around town
Where the people look good
Where the music is loud
Get around town
No need to stand proud
Add your voice to the sound of the crowd

Thr Railroad Tracks
Who lived across the railroad tracks?
A few of us whites, but mostly blacks.
These railroad tracks without even knowing
separated my town and kept it growing
into a segregated place.
I used to listen for the sound of the train.
As it rolled on by, it would never remain.
It just kept rolling to where it was going.
The engineer waved. The smoke kept blowing
into a segregated place.
Even when the trains stopped the rolling
the tracks will still there. They were controlling
the thinking of the people in our town.
So they kept the tracks there, never tore them down
in our segregated place.
Some were on the right side of the tracks, you see.
Some were on the wrong side of the tracks, like me.
They never took the tracks down from 60 years ago.
And the town I grew up in doesn't want to know
it's a segregated place.

Take Me Down
Someday Im gonna pack up
And then Im goin back up
To that place where sentimental feelings arouse
Where the grass is so green
And the air is so clean
That when the wind is right you can even smell the cows
Take me down (take me down)
To that good old slo town
Where time shifts into neutral
And idles away
Take me down (take me down)
To that good old slo town
Ive got to get back
To that city today
If youre new in town
Then youll wanna look around
But you dont know where to begin
Well, theres bubble gum alley
And the local car rally
Not to mention the toilets at madonna inn
Take me down (take me down)
To that good old slo town
Where time shifts into neutral
And idles away
Take me down (take me down)
To that good old slo town
Ive got to get back
To that city today
Its not much of a hassle
To drive up to hearsts castle
And its not too far from pismo beach or morro rock
You can visit downtown at your leisure
Because for your shopping pleasure
The stores never close down until five oclock
Take me down (take me down)
To that good old slo town
Where time shifts into neutral
And idles away
Take me down (take me down)
To that good old slo town
Ive got to get back
To that city today
Take me down (take me down)
To that good old slo town
Where time shifts into neutral
And idles away
Take me down (take me down)

Ive got to get back
To that city today

Heavy Weather
(michael sembello)
In the news today
Heavy weather
Oh, I can remember
The skies were so blue
That lucky old moon I promised to you
Now its gone lately
Somethings happening
I dont understand
Oh, how come decembers
Are hotter that june?
And how come the flowers
Dont know when to bloom?
Somethings wrong, people
Somethings happening
Happening where we live
The rising smoke against an endless sea of cars
As mother nature gets another senseless scar
In the news today
I guess were in for heavy weather
In the world today
Were heading for some heavy weather
The rain is falling harder each day
The faces keep changing
But the problem remains
Somethings wrong, people
Right before our eyes
Weve been hypnotized
The sound of silence
Broken by the sound of war
How can we heal
If we keep opening up the sore?
In the news today
I guess were in for heavy weather
In the world today
Were heading for some heavy weather
Will we ever hear the message?
Read the signs?
Stop all this talking now
Its time to save our lives
In the news today
I guess were in for heavy weather
In the world today
Were heading for some heavy...
The road ahead keeps leading back again
The train were on is coming to an end
Lets open up our eyes
In the world today
Were heading for some heavy weather
In the news today
I guess were in for heavy weather
In the news today
I guess were in for heavy weather

Hold Hands and Blow Bubbles
Tomorrow I will wake to see you lying next to me and I will watch you sleep.
I will gently touch your face to wake you and cover you with kisses.
Tomorrow will be the first time we truly get to spend time alone together.
We can stay in bed as long as we want and watch the birds outside eat and play.
Tomorrow we will go for a walk in the park, hold hands and blow bubbles.
We will wash the car in the driveway and end up covered in soap and water.
Tomorrow you will hide the remote while I make your morning coffee.
We will make a dozen sack lunches and go down town and hand them out.
Tomorrow we will kiss every time one of us says ‘Um'.
We will have pie for lunch and skip dessert.
Tomorrow in the morning we will tell every person we meet what the current time is, in Afghanistan.
In the evening we will thank everyone we meet.
Tomorrow we will save water and take a bath together, with extra bubbles, planes and boats.
We will lie on a blanket and stare at the stars and tell one another stories.
Tomorrow night we will thumb wrestle to see who will be the outside spoon.
I will whisper in your ear, kiss your neck and caress you until you fall sleep.
Tomorrow night while you dream I will whisper all of my plans, desires and secrets to you while you sleep.
It be the first of the greatest days of our lives.
Today, I will search for you.

Hell Of A Town
Its a hell of a town
Theres smoke coming up through the holes in the ground
Its a hell of a town
Plenty of devils for taking you down
Any time of night and day
Its a hell of a town
Getting drunk on the tears of a clown
Its a hell of a town
Steppin out in a bulletproof gown
So get out of my goddamn way
Im walking here
Im talking here
Its a hell of a town
Swimming out where the ships run aground
Its a hell of a town
Always room on the merry-go-round
So step up and be damned today
Im walking here
Im talking here
