Here's the point - you're looking at affirmative action, and you're looking at marijuana. You legalize marijuana, no need for quotas, because really, who's gonna wanna work?

Affirmative action was always racial justice on the cheap.
Rogue Male
I saw a man Saturday,
standing at a robot light
with a sign,
which stated that
as a handyman,
he could fix most things
and are willing to work
for food.
His eyes told their own story
and life tried to crucify him,
but nothing could
get him down
You might think
of him as just
another vagrant,
but in his eyes
there was something
deep and the expression
on his face
dug into my soul.
I thought that I knew him
from somewhere
and I learned
that as a engineer
he was stripped from work
by affirmative action
and not able to get a job
by the same racist law
and then remembered
him from the battle field,
where no enemy
could pin him down.
How sad a thing
to see a hero,
who’s country
made less than a zero;
in the name
of progress and prosperity.

There's a lot of Americans, black and white, who think that we've arrived where we need to be and nothing else needs to be done and affirmative action needs to be dismantled.
If they're all so brilliant and I'm such an affirmative-action hire, how come they didn't catch me?

Lonely Action
Action, Action, Lonely Action,
Sociable action, Social Action
And more Action.
That is the solution
To the terrible mess
And of loneliness.
Sociable Action
To solve the mess
Of loneliness
Taken once a year
Is not going to cut it
Once a month may work
Once a week will work
Once a day
Is the way
To do it!

I think Bush has capitulated on affirmative action and government spending. Apart from that, he's OK, I guess. About the same as Howard Dean.

What is so remarkable about the success of affirmative action is that it has been accomplished despite the Justice Department and the policies of the federal government.

One evening I see a thing
One evening
I see a thing
that let’s my blood boil,
while I watch the news
on the television set.
I know a bold man
without hair
that stands before a big crowd,
his country, the world
and the God of gods
and lays his hand
on the holy black book
and lies a promise down and gives a solemn oath
to be true to his country and fellow man.
His government drove me to Angola
and back again
and all of the oppressed
really did have to get freedom,
but where did he stay
his brother’s keeper?
Now it seems
that he really doesn’t have a clue
about how a white man
with a degree and lots of experience
has difficulty
to find a permanent job at forty five
and to put food on the table
and all of government
falls apart
through people that have no clue
how to do their work.
Thousands of rands of tax
are subtracted from my contract work
and tax pays
his fat pension.
I want to blister
like a hot potato,
because he has the impudence
to say something about affirmative action
and I pray for him
and ask God to change him
and for him to be blessed,
as it is the way
that my mother taught me
to do to my enemies.
My contract is finished
and I have to find another job
and from that,
he stands totally free.

What dreams are left to dream? (in answer to Mathews Phosa)
Everywhere where a person looks for work
the indication BEE only is proclaimed,
as if the claws of the monster
of affirmative action
continually goes wider and wider
and it’s not only
at state departments
but even in the private sector
that you get this onslaught of racism.
Without work, you are impoverished
even if you have whatever kind of degree
or experience,
in the end it means absolutely nothing
when you loose everything
and cannot pay your accounts.
Where will you get money for a cool drink or tea,
or to buy something at the nearest café
and what dreams are left to dream,
but for liberation
from this hellish oppression
[References: Only by Matthews Phosa. BEE is Black economic empowerment. (The poet Mathews Phosa is the premier of the Orange Free State province) ]

Freedom Does Mean
Freedom doesn't mean
You are free to do anything
But it does mean
You can do anything
In your own fashion
Provided your action
Doesn't lead to reaction
Doesn't encroach others right
Freedom doesn't give you right
Right to use you might
To do what you think is right
Freedom seeks from you
You to be just in your action
Unprejudiced in your view
Freedom gives opportunity
To capitalise your ability
Freedom does demand responsibility
From you
To take freedom in right sense
And don't do non-sense
And become a nuisance
To your society
To your community
To your country
Freedom does mean
You are not mean
It seeks from you
Respect others right
Without duty no right

Called Ruin
The waste of work is called ruin,
Having a blessed action is solid;
No mound of soil is upturned
Without the guidance of wastage,
For wastage is the key to action
And action especially happens.
The moonlight escapes the Earth,
Once lit, and never enters the heart
We love and mention, always we dine
As the suns and stars revolve with each other.
The work of this expanse accepted
Is a work so wasted, for we dine and expel
The ruin called wastage of work.
