Nicknames
nicknames are thrown
around in my family;
our own terms of endearment
word could not describe.
it is that closeness
towards each other
through words that evoke
a special experience
with a brother or sister
or just a plain description of
his uniqueness.
a brother is called La Ting
because of his bald head when a
baby.
eldest brother is labelled Ming
instead of his real name Thai
because of his intelligence
when a child.
Ming means clear-minded.
Another is called Lung
instead of Ing because of his
Chinese horoscope sign dragon
which in Mandarin is Lung.
mom's favourite animal sign
is dragon so the name sticks.
youngest brother is Bee,
my own spontaneous invention
when I saw the cute little child
in mom's hands many years back.
I am so glad and proud
that this is the only creation
in my life that has been used
for so long and that it
has surprisingly given
brother all the good luck;
he turns out to be a bank's manager.
he should have me to thank
for all his fortune.
another brother is called Chi
instead of his real name Kui.
i could not fathom the
reason for this and wonder
which brother first started
calling him that.
eldest sister is Pui
instead of Hua because
of her plumbness when a baby.
and oh dear, we are naughty
when it comes to our neighbours.
many of them have secret nicknames
coined from the way they
talk, walk, and even look
and we really hope they would
never ever find out these names.
Our family just bubble in
our neighbourhood because of
our incessant inner creative jest
to coin all those secret words.
perhaps, we are nicknamed too
which we never
bother about because
we know nicknames are
given out of endearment.
at least, that is the case with us.

Nicknames are the hardest stones the devil can throw at a man.

Ambiance
Excited I glowed...
When with my uncles and aunts.
Feeling such a radiance,
In a sheltered ambiance.
When I became older...
My ties with them were cut!
As children we had nicknames then...
But as we grew we gave them up!
I long to be called, 'Bighead' again!
And running through the Maple trees,
Carefree and laughing with them!
Some of them have passed away.
Like my grandparents; mom and dad!
And yet that ambiance I remember...
Seems to sink like racing sand so fast.
With nothing to hold onto or grasp!
As my time passes quicker...
In this swift shifting hourglass!

I've had many nicknames over the years: V, Nessa, Nessy Poo, Nessy Bear and Van. Only my parents call me Van, though, and I hate it. I get embarrassed.

So Lucky To Have You
I love the way you
Look at me
An expression that's filled
With adoration and love
You call me cute little nicknames
Your always there for me
I could spend hours talking to you
Just listening to your voice
You make me happy
You brighten up my day
I'm so lucky to have
You

Can You Hear Me Lucinda?
I am yelling Lucinda...
Asking you to open up your ears--
For you have been deaf far too long--
For way too many years;
Theres so much that you've missed out on...
With those ears that have been closed...
Can you hear me Lucinda?
All of the rhyme, the reason, the prose? ;
And what of your eyes Lucinda?
How long are you going to just keep looking away?
The truth is staring you in the face, Lucinda...
All of the horrid of yesterday! ;
Is it all just too heart wrenching?
Too much for your broken heart to face?
Can you hear me now Lucinda?
Beyond all of the ruffles, trifles and the frilly lace? ;
Beyond all of their false praise?
Beyond all of your friends who only pretend?
Beyond all of the reality that you face this day?
Beyond all of your real enemies eventual end? ;
Can you hear me now, Lucinda?
Are your ears opened up wide?
Are your eyes finally focusing, Lucinda?
There is no reason for you to hide! ;
For it was always them, Lucinda...!
It was always their plans and their schemes...! ! !
Counterfeit souls with greedy greenback goals...! ! !
Who shattered all of your dreams! ;
I know its all too painful...
But face them you must-my dear!
Its time for your eyes to see them and their reality...!
And its time for your ears to fully hear! ;

I Remember When
Days are gone but my love lives on in this space and time.
I remember playing the games, funny nicknames, and all the sunny days,
That shine so brightly.
I keep remembering when we started together as friends.
I keep remembering when we were together forever.
The promise we made still stays in my head like the melody.
I remember favorite songs we heard all night long in the candlelight
Still shines so brightly.
I keep...
I bet you didnt know how much I loved you.
I bet you didnt know just how much I care.
Little girl, whenever Im around you, all in love is fair, girl.
I keep... (repeat & fade)

Poopey PooPoo
My grandmother,
Was not into calling her children
By nicknames.
In fact she once said to my sister...
'I gave my children the names they have!
Each was given with a special meaning.
To identify and dignify that which has been given.'
I often wondered...
Had my sister and I been,
The only ones listening?
With comprehension?
Over the years...
It just appears that way!
Today...
Grown folks are known better by their nicknames.
Than those names given.
Poopey PooPoo. BeBop. Slice and Dice...
BooBoo and Drooper!
What 'energies' have they called upon themselves?
And their children have no idea who their parents are.
Their real names.
Or their purposes.
I remembered when I began calling myself Lawrence...
My birth name.
Lawrence, Junior in fact.
Named after my father.
We were both called Larry at one time.
I decided I would become Lawrence S.
After discovering on my father's birth certificate,
His name was listed as Lawrence A.
And I wanted to be 'AS' much as Lawrence as possible!
Can you guess...
I am between poeticness.
As I share a bit of 'personal-ness'.
Folks got upset!
Guess who smiled?
Clara Louise Countryman Pertillar.
She was very strong and dynamic.
She was pleased to know I was daring!
And the leaves upon the trees,
Begin to bloom in Spring.
As I reminisce those things I miss.
Taking trips back through time.
Those things impressed upon my mind.
And finding me feeling blessed!

Elk
The big deep brown heads,
The long thick necks,
They are the elk.
The high withers,
The long legs,
They are the elk.
In the canyon,
On the praries,
they are the elk.
With the short stubby tail,
With the long listening ears,
They are the elk.
A siting every once in a while,
These are the creatures of nature,
They are the elk.

So Long
So long, so long
Now Im on my way
So long, so long
See you all some day
Dont know where Im heading for
Turn my back and walk away
Dont think about whats left behind
Otherwise
Think about the good times
Think about the people you love
Think about the sun that is gone
And there aint no use me talking bout the things we used to do
So long, so long
Im better by myself
So long, so long
Dont need nobody else
If I fade from peoples hearts
Im glad I left them far behind
Theres one thing that holds me still
Im thinkin
The memory of your kiss
The memory of your sweet caress
The memory of you love that is gone
And there aint no use me talking bout the things we used to do
So long, so long
Got no time for tears
So long, so long
Got music in my ears
Got no time for muswell town
Gonna look around now
My old town was good to me
But oh...
Guess Ill say so long now
Dont even say a word
Ill turn my back and walk away, but oh...
The day that Ive seen everything I promise to return
So long, so long
Now Im on my way
So long, so long
See you all some day
So long, so long
Now Im on my way
So long, so long

Highschool
High school
A time for dances and football games
School girl crushes and silly nicknames
Not yet grown, but not really a child
Wanting to be good, and still being wild
Ah, those were the days,
Some would say
But these are the days
My life is complete, those I will cherish always

Let The Wind Blow
For the last eight years of my life
I was being cut with unsharpened knife
Now let the time come to end the strife.
Let the wind blow and whistle in my ears,
‘War is over and it’s time for peace.’
I never imagined it would go for this long
But I feel like I am lost in a thick fog
May now be the time to end all the wrong
Let the wind blow and whistle in my ears,
‘War is over and it’s time for peace.’
So far to forgiveness, so close to revenge
Difficult to control, very hard to manage
War is deadly evil, let there be a change.
Let the wind blow and whistle in my ears,
‘War is over and it’s time for peace.’
This is a wish of two citizens
Each from the sister enemies
Eritrea, Ethiopia, they should end the war
And people find the peace they’re longing for
Let the wind blow and whistle in my ears,
‘War is over and it’s time for peace.’

Mutuality
i like your ears
you think
i am just flattering you
i suggest
you see your ears
using my eyes
as your mirror
still you do not
trust me
how can you be so indifferent?
i will buy you a mirror,
and now
use it, see?
your ears are
so beautiful
because
they are deaf

Once I showed up at my sister's with a baby rabbit I had bought from some children because its ears were cold. I put the rabbit on a hot water bottle and massaged its ears for quite a while. After all, I knew that all healthy animals had warm ears.
