American Without Tears
Outside in new orleans the heat was almost frightening
But my hotel room as usual was freezing and unkind
On tv they prosecute anyone whos exciting
So I put on my overcoat and went down to find
In revlon and crimpelene they captured my heart
To the strain of a piano and a cocktail murderess
She was singing that its too late, I agreed with that part
For two english girls who had changed their address
[chorus]
Now it seems weve been crying for years and for years
Now I dont speak any english, just american without tears
Just american without tears
One had been a beauty queen and the other was her friend
They had known rogues and rascals and showbiz impresarios
While the boys were licking hitler they had something to defend
>from men armed with chewing gum and fine nylon hose
By a bicycle factory as they sounded the siren
And returned into the dancehall she knew he was the one
Though he wasnt tall or handsome she laughed when he told her
Im the sheriff of nottingham and this is little john
[chorus]
At a dock in southampton full of tearful goodbyes
Newsreel commentators said cheerio, g.i. brides
Soon theyll be finding the cold facts and lies
New words for suspenders and young girls backsides
Now Im in america and running from you
Like my grandfather before me walked the streets of new york
And I think of all the women I pretend mean more than you
When I open my mouth and I cant seem to talk
Now it seems weve been crying for years and for years
Now I dont speak any english just american without tears
Just american without tears

American Without Tears #2
December 1965 in caracas
When arnie laflem took a piece of the pie
When he packed up the casino chips, the iou and the abacus
And switched off the jukebox in a a fool such as i
He was a leg man who was open to offers
But he couldnt get her off his mind as he passed the tourist office
And as he entertained himself singing just like sammy davis junior
He toyed with her trip to miami
For money like that
He could have sweet talk in her ear
Now they dont speak any english
Just american without tears
It was an idea that he dangled on his knee
And nursed it like his coffee cup
When he couldnt find any other way
It always seemed to come to him
While the day was dipping down
And sun was like a lightbulb
Being swallowed by a clown
He took her for everything
He took her for his only one
He took her out of coventry and over to idaho
But the war wound that he carried home
Wasnt really visable
When bullets were forgotton
She lived dowdry, down, and miserable
And she seemed to be crying for year after year
And says, you dont speak any english
Just american between tears.
Honey she said to me will you turn down the radio.
You havent slept a wink since we came to havana
When youre gonna get the strength to go over to florida
All you ever listen to is the voice of america.
It was the story of a young english puppet
Who took up with a soldier boy
And thought she would profit.
Just like me she found out what true love is about
Anyway shes in new orleans it would never work out
Oh she seemed to be crying for year after year
Now you dont speak any english
Just american between tears.
Just american without tears.
For you seem to be crying year after year
Now you dont speak any english
Just american without tears.
Just american without tears.

Five Years
Pushing thru the market square, so many mothers sighing
News had just come over, we had five years left to cry in
News guy wept and told us, earth was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet, then I knew he was not lying
I heard telephones, opera house, favourite melodies
I saw boys, toys electric irons and t.v.s
My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there
And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people
And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people
I never thought Id need so many people
A girl my age went off her head, hit some tiny children
If the black hadnt a-pulled her off, I think she would have killed them
A soldier with a broken arm, fixed his stare to the wheels of a cadillac
A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest, and a queer threw up at the sight of that
I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine, dont think
You knew you were in this song
And it was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor
And I thought of ma and I wanted to get back there
Your face, your race, the way that you talk
I kiss you, youre beautiful, I want you to walk
Weve got five years, stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
Weve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, thats all weve got
Weve got five years, what a surprise
Five years, stuck on my eyes
Weve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, thats all weve got
Weve got five years, stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
Weve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, thats all weve got
Weve got five years, what a surprise
Weve got five years, stuck on my eyes
Weve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, thats all weve got
Five years
Five years

Our Last Goodbye
Baby, dont cry
Open your eyes
Here in the dead of the night
Lying here with you by my side, dont know if this is wrong or its
Right
Wishing this was just another day, baby, I can feel its too late
Just another cruel twist of fate
Looking back through the years, time has dried all our tears
But all good things must end, oh, just listen
Chorus:
Baby, dont cry, I can see weve lost the feeling
Wont you open your eyes and try to find your smile
Weve known each other too long to let it all slip away
But when alls said and done, weve said our last goodbye
Baby, dont cry
Baby, weve been living a lie
And even though it hurts deep inside
I know there can be no, no, no compromise cause too many chances have
Passed
And if you want a love that can last, never try to push things too
Fast
And even though Ive no regrets, I still recall the night we met
We said wed never end, so, baby, listen
Repeat chorus
Rap:
All the memories we had, I wouldnt change a thing
And with the lights down low, Im dreaming of what could have been
Even though weve tried so many times before
Ill take one look around before I close the door
With this one last kiss, I know deep down inside
The beginning of the end, the ending of our time
Maybe we could try, but, no, its just too late
Just another cruel twist of fate
Looking back through the years, time has dried all our tears
But all good things must end, oh, just listen
Repeat chorus to fade

Dont Walk Away
Cant believe were standing here
Saying that were leaving
While holding back the tears
I remember everything weve shared
Through all the years
Why does it have to end this way
Is this the bitter pill
That we have to take
And now weve come this far
Is this the price we pay
Can we win it back again
Chorus:
So dont walk away
We can save our love
If we just keep the faith
Lets turn the tide, before its too late
Dont let it go, dont walk away
Sometimes we dont see eye to eye
And in the past, we may have danced a little out of time
And after all the different roads weve walked together
Lets make it right
Lets start tonight
Chorus
All it takes is understanding
The answers right there in our hearts
We can reach a new horizon
If we keep the hope alive
And all the things will turn out right
Chorus x2

Gertrude Stein is interviewed on American poetry
and there was the knocking on the door
that we were expecting
and it was the man
that we were expecting
with the questions we were expecting
to which answers were expected
by those who expect answers
as if life were like that
which for writers it is not
yes, tea was drunk
and after tea the tape recorder set up
so that what I said
I would continue to say
somewhere else
even when I changed my mind
here and nowhere else
and he said Ms Stein
what do you think of American poetry
and we said well it's American
and it's poetry
that's as it should be
and really that's all there is to say
and the man looked disappointed
so we asked him did he read poetry
and he said poetry no I dont read poetry
but my editor does
so I said it's really about Americans
living their lives
that's what American poetry is really about
because Americans move around
and so their words move around and
words in English have lost their intensity
but American words are always on the move
and they are more intense
yes, Americans living among Americans
and talking to their neighbours
if it's not about that
it's not really American poetry at all is it
if it's not about that
then why bother writing poetry
and the man was asking about a rose
being a rose being a rose and we said
for a hundred years the rose
has not been red in poetry
but now for the first time in a hundred years
the rose is red again
and the man looked at his watch
and said thank you Ms Stein
and was switching off his tape recorder
and a month later that
was what we said
in a magazine much read
by Americans who mostly
are not poets no very few but we said it
we know that this is so
because we read it there
and we think that really
that was all there was to say
because that was all we think
is really important
about American Poetry
that the words move like Americans move
and that is exciting for a writer
and that is the important thing about
American Poetry

Years of Tears
Years of tears for no ears to hear, lonely for years am I
Years of tears for no ears to hear in silence they dropp and die
Years of tears, hidden deep, I cannot weep, nor cry.
Years of tears, for many fears of dying alone, I sigh.
Years of tears which no one hears as many years go by.
Years of tears in the lonely sky, my tears grow wings and fly.
Years of tears, my smile shines, through its little lines, I lie.
Years of tears, my somber peers through my melancholy eye
Tears of tears, Years of Years, in my soul, I tie.
Years of tears for no ears to hear my tears weep goodbye….

All I Knew
Woohoo woohoo woohoo
Here comes an honest looking man
With his round face and his fat hands
See the news, there he is
With the answers to the last quiz
I can never know what I then knew
In a million years
I can never know what I used to
In a million tears
Turn it on we will see
Everything today
Me and you will lose
Our marbles on the way
Ill remember you forever
til the day Im dead
Ill remember us together
And the things weve said
Ill spare a penny for my thoughts
And try to work out what I just bought
Let me think, let me think
Left swimming in an ice rink
Woohoo woohoo
I dont want to hear what someone has to say
Ill just write it down and throw it all away
I could never know what I then knew
In a million years
I could never know what I used to
In a million tears
Woohoo woohoo
Ill remember you forever
til the day Im dead
Ill remember us together
And the things weve said
I could never know what I then knew
In a million years
I could never know what I used to
In a million tears
In a million tears
In a million tears
In a million tears
In a million tears

Dont Let em Take Your Gun
Ohhh, people why dont you come in here and let me talk to you a while.
Thats right, step right up and listen to a concerned citizen speak his piece.
Ill tell you a little something that my daddy told to me.
My basic fundamentals if you want to be free.
cause son, theres somthing wrong internally.
So, if you want your freedom son.
Dont want your country to be overrun.
You got to keep america number one.
(chorus)
My daddy told me son, dont let em take your gun.
Thats what they tryin to do.
Son, dont let em take your gun.
Theyre takin your bill of rights away from you.
My daddy said son, dont let em take your gun.
Thats what they tryin to do.
Son, dont let em take your gun.
Dont let em take your gun away from you.
Ohhh, this year is our anniversary.
Two hundred years, people weve been free.
Wont be nobody takin over our land.
If everybodys brothers got a gun in his hand.
Im tellin you we learned to fight for justice.
Were willing to die for freedom.
Hand in hand.
You got to understand.
We are american men.
Said they want your gun.
Said they want your gun.
Send em on the run.
Send em on the run.
Hip-hurray for fun.
Hip-hurray for fun.
If they do were done.
If they do were done.

Last night in little rock put me in a haze.
Sweet, sweet connie -- doin her act,
She had the whole show and thats a natural fact.
Up all night with freddy king,
I got to tell you pokers his thing.
A-booze n ladies keep me right,
As long as we can make it to the show tonight.
Chorus
Were an american band.

Were coming to your town, well help you party it down.
Were an american band.
Four young chaquitas in omaha,
Was waitin for the band to return from the show.
Feelin good, feelin right, its saturday night,
The hotel detective -- he was out-a-sight.
Now, these fine ladies, they had a plan,
They was out to meet the boys in the band.
They said, come on, dudes, lets get it on,
And we proceeded to tear that hotel down.

Joe Porterhouse
The children sit upon the stairs
High above a valley of tears
Dont let them see you crying that way oh no
Oh no joe porterhouse
Is not gone forever
Hell be back another day
Dont let them see you crying that way
Chorus
Please dont wake him let him sleep
Its a moment she can keep
Like an old bus ticket or a photograph
Resting on the mantlepiece
While for the wicked there is no peace
She says its not his time to go
Why we were nearly lovers years ago
Now what is left for me
Among the broken branches of the family tree
Heart like an anchor
Arms like cable
He stood all alone on an iron turntable
Dont let them see you crying that way oh no
The sun beats down
Its cracking the flags
Boys who should know better
Are stamping out fags
Dont let them see you laughing that way
Chorus
Oh no joe porterhouse
Is not gone forever
Hell be back another day
Dont let them see you crying that way

Dont Say Its Love
Weve had it good for years now
Dont let the change
Weve never needed answers
To find the way
Now all of a sudden
Like waves on a beach
Love has come crashing down
The truth has been lost and found
(chorus)
Dont say its love, baby
cos you are to me
What you want to be
Dont say its love, baby
If our friendship is to survive
Dont say its love
Weve shared so many secrets
Now kiss and tell
You make one move to love me
And its farewell
cos somewhere theres someone
Whos waiting for you
To love you more than I could
Your heart was misunderstood
(chorus)
Dont be a fool
Youll be alone in your confusion
If loving me is an illusion
Then let it go
Oh no no no no
Now I never counted
On ending this way
I always trusted fate
But if we are no too late
(chorus)
...all you do is say its love

Young Americans
They pulled in just behind the fridge
He lays her down, he frowns
"gee my life's a funny thing, am i still too young?"
He kissed her then and there
She took his ring, took his babies
It took him minutes, took her nowhere
Heaven knows, she'd have taken anything, but
Chorus (he)
All night
She wants the young american
Young american, young american, she wants the young american
All right
She wants the young american
Scanning life through the picture window
She finds the slinky vagabond
He coughs as he passes her ford mustang, but
Heaven forbid, she'll take anything
But the freak, and his type, all for nothing
He misses a step and cuts his hand, but
Showing nothing, he swoops like a song
She cries "where have all papa's heroes gone?"
Chorus (she)
All the way from washington
Her bread-winner begs off the bathroom floor
"we live for just these twenty years
Do we have to die for the fifty more?"
Chorus (he)
All night
He wants the young american
Young american, young american, he wants the young american
All right
He wants the young american
Do you remember, your president clinton?
Do you remember, bill, you have to pay
Or even yesterday?
Have you have been an un-american?
Just you and your idol singing falsetto 'bout
Leather, leather everywhere, and
Not a myth left from the ghetto
Well, well, well, would you carry a razor
In case, just in case of depression?
Sit on your hands on a bus of survivors
Blushing at all the afro-sheilas
Ain't that close to love?
Well, ain't that poster love?
Well, it ain't that barbie doll
Her heart's been broken just like you have
Chorus (you)
All night
You want the young american
Young american, young american, you want the young american
All right
You want the young american
You ain't a pimp and you ain't a hustler
A pimp's got a cadi and a lady got a chrysler
Black's got respect, and white's got his soul train
Mama's got cramps, and look at your hands ache
(i heard the news today, oh boy)
I got a suite and you got defeat
Ain't there a man you can say no more?
And, ain't there a woman i can sock on the jaw?
And, ain't there a child i can hold without judging?
Ain't there a pen that will write before they die?
Ain't you proud that you've still got faces?
Ain't there one damn song that can make me
Break down and cry?
Chorus (i) (repeat 3 times)
All night
I want the young american
Young american, young american, i want the young american
All right
I want the young american

This is America: Better know English
America was once the magnificent place
Where all immigrants wanted to escape
So they illegally come here, as illegal aliens
Hiding in the back of our American vans
Now our schools and jobs require multiple languages
When we’re the Americans, we’re supposed to speak English!
And we do and just because they don’t
Doesn’t mean their language is a demand we should know
Don’t come to America if you don’t know the language
I’m just being realistic, I’m not being racist
Don’t put up store signs if they’re not readable
You’re in America; English is the main language you should know
Then they’re pissed because people won’t help out their business
But their forgetting us Americans don’t speak their language
We don’t go to Mexico demanding English classes
So why should they own the right to demand us Spanish?
I love the language, and everything BUT
THIS IS AMERICA look our history up!
Then tell me if French should be required
Where in the hell in the time line is that desired?
I know this is the land of opportunity, land of the free
But we should be able to communicate as human beings
And if that’s just too hard no one said they had to stay here
They can go back where they came from and speak in harmony there
I’m just a full blood American, as so the rest of my family
And like others, our language should be the first they’re demanding
We're tired of going to our fastfood restaurants to eat
When the orderer of our order can't even speak
And buyers, don't buy our house
If you can't even pronounce our street out
I'm tired of security going through all our private equipment
I'm an American, Bitch, do I look like a terrorist?
Honestly, you can come here if you want to be
Since this is the best place of opportunity
And we don’t care if you speak 20 different languages and love them
But this is AMERICA, ENGLISH better be one of them!

American Dream
Written by John Mellencamp
I had a face so cute made a young girl cry
And I could blow 'em away with just a wink of my eye
I got all dolled up on a Saturday night
Can't find a lady so I'll start a fight
Hey but ain't that the American Dream
But at School the young boys would assemble down in the parking lot
And we spoke of the homecoming queen and all the goodies she's got
Well those stories would choke a semi
And every dare was do or die
Hey but ain't that the American Dream
(bridge)
Well I grew up believin' I could do what I wanted to do
When I got a little older I found that it just wasn't true
There's gotta be a place for me
Where I can out-be just what I want to be
Hey but ain't that the American Dream
Some of the girls are out teaching high school biology
And all of my boyfriends they work down at Cummmins factory
But me I'm still out on the streets trying to locate some destiny
Hey but ain't that the American Dream
(repeat bridge)

American Boys, Hello!
Oh! we love all the French, and we speak in French
As along through France we go.
But the moments to us that are keen and sweet
Are the ones when our khaki boys we meet,
Stalwart and handsome and trim and neat;
And we call to them-'Boys, hello!'
'Hello, American boys,
Luck to you, and life's best joys!
American boys, hello!'
We couldn't do that if we were at home-
It never would do you know!
For there you must wait till you're told who's who,
And to meet in the way that nice folks do.
Though you knew his name, and your name he knew-
You never would say 'Hello, hello, American boy!'
But here it's just a joy,
As we pass along in the stranger throng,
To call out, 'Boys, hello!'
For each is a brother away from home;
And this we are sure is so,
There's a lonesome spot in his heart somewhere,
And we want him to feel there are friends
right there
In this foreign land, and so we dare
To call out 'Boys, hello!'
'Hello, American boys,
Luck to you, and life's best joys!
American boys, hello!'

The Girls Want To Be With The Girls
The girls dont want to play like that,
They just want to talk to the boys.
The just want to do what is in their hearts,
And the girls want to be with the girls.
(chorus)
And the boys say, what do you mean?
And the boys say, what do you mean?
Well there is just no love,
When theres boys and girls.
And the girls want to be with the girls,
And the girls want to be with the girls.
Girls want things that make common sense,
The best for all concerned.
They dont want to have to go out of their way,
And the girls want to be with the girls.
(chorus)
And the boys say, what do you mean?
And the boys say, what do you mean?
Well there is just no love,
When theres boys and girls.
And the girls want to be with the girls,
And the girls want to be with the girls.
Girls are getting into abstract analysis,
They want to make intuitive leap.
They are making plans that have far reaching effects.
And the girls want to be with the girls.
(chorus)
And the boys say, what do you mean?
And the boys say, what do you mean?
Well there is just no love,
When theres boys and girls.
And the girls want to be with the girls.
And the girls want to be with the girls.

Here Come Those Tears Again
Here come those tears again
Just when I was getting over you
Just when I was going to make it through
Another night without missing you
Thinking I might just be strong enough after all
When I hear your footsteps echoing in the hall
Baby here we stand again
Like weve been so many times before
Even though you looked so sure
As I was watching you walking out my door
But you always walk back in like you did today
Acting like you never even went away
Well I dont know if I can
Open up and let you in baby
Here come those tears
Here come those tears again
I can hear you telling me
How you needed to be free
And you had some things to work out alone
Now youre standing here telling me
How you have grown
Here come those tears again
Now youll tell me how to hold them in
Here come those tears
Here come those tears again
Some other time baby
When Im strong and feeling fine maybe
When I can look at you without crying
You might look like a friend of mine
But I dont know if I can
Open up enough to let you in
Here come those tears
Here come those tears again
Just walk away
Im going back inside and turning out those light
And Ill be in the dark but youll be out of sight

Walked
Native American Pride
They always came to us with a bribe
Wrong and misunderstood
They took our hood
We walked the Trail of Tears
Everyday full of fears
Children crying
Men and women dying
All this for what
So we can live in a hut
This happened a long time ago
Because the white men had a big ego
Native American Pride is what I have and will not hide.

Mama's got cramps, and look at your hands ache
I heard the news today, oh boy
I got a suite and you got defeat
Ain't there a man you can say no more?
And, ain't there a woman I can sock on the jaw?
And, ain't there a child I can hold without judging?
Ain't there a pen that will write before they die?
Ain't you proud that you've still got faces?
Ain't there one damn song that can make me
break down and cry?
All night
I want the young American
Young American, young American, I want the young American
All right
I want the young American
Young American
Young American, young American, I want the young American
(I want with you, I want with you want)
All right
(You want it, I want you you, you want I, I want you want)
Young American, young American, I want the young American (I want to want, to want, to want , to want I, I want you)
All right
(Lord I wanted the young american)
(young american)
Young American, Young American
I want the young American
Mmmmmm mmm
