Zidane, Irwin and Brock

(Soccer Star, Wildlife Warrior and Rally Driver)

The World Cup Soccer final was taking place in France
When the captain of the French received a sideways glance
That may have had an insult added to the stare
Which he didn’t take to kindly, so let his temper flare
He trotted to the ‘Talian from whom the ribbing came
And gave him a full head-butt, so ending his last game
He took the red card quietly and then he left the field
And so the French footballers succumbed and had to yield

Another icon in the news and of the TV screen
Was cavorting in the water in another series scene
Making up a programme to bring to every home
The dangerous and deadly animals that roam
Upon the planet, in the sea, along that great big reef
That borders off the Aussie shore when then he came to grief
The deadly Ray that stabbed him directly in his heart
Took a man from all of us, not ready to depart

And then again another man, a symbol of the brave
Lost his life too early and was sent off to his grave
Epitomising ‘daring do’ and skidding on the rim
He crashed into a roadside tree and thus lost life from limb
So what is there to learn from these casualties that cast
Careers and lives so suddenly, so quickly and so fast
Perhaps the lesson we can learn is that even mighty fall
And that the rules if broken do have consequence for all

The Beautiful Game (soccer)

I love you more than my old soccer cleats,
The ones I’ll never give up.
I love you more than the perfect field,
The one I use to warm up.
I love you more than my soccer ball,
The one that’s perfect for amazing passes.
I love you more than me running along those different types of grasses.
I love you more than the cheering crowds,
The stands made out of plaster.
I love you more than that perfect kick,
That I have yet to master.
I love you more than my soccer cleats the ones that hold all reason.
I love you more than my coach, my soccer team and my season.
I love you more than winning that world cup,
That we have yet to reclaim.
I can’t believe I love you more than the beautiful game.

Soccer

Soccer
Have you ever been on a soccer field?
Well if you haven't it’s the m amazing thing
It’s like being in heaven but on grass
When the grass is just cut and the potato bugs are jumping in the air it gives you energy to have fun

And if you have been on a field then you know how the freshly cut grass
stings your nose and enlightens your heart to give you extra strength to
play soccer harder than you ever have in your life. That is what it’s like being on a soccer field!

Soccer!

GOAL! SCORE! HORNS BLARING!

soccer fans blowing there horns, eating their food, jumping up and down, painted faces, soccer jerseys, foam fingers, hot blistering sun, fun.

soccer balls roll and fly across the field soaring though the air like a bird with no wings, black and white moving so fast.

soccer bleachers, sweating fans, crumbs of food left in the stands, bird and bees and hornets to fly all around looking for food.

GOAL! SCORE! HORNS BLARING! SOCCER!

Judges Have Their Druthers And Ireland Howled

Thierry Henry touched the ball,
by ref unseen, and wasn’t fouled;
the world observed the ref not call
a penalty, and Ireland howled.

Once Maradona claimed the hand
of God had scored the winning goal;
because God’s head is in the sand
rule breakers often are made whole.

Some of us go out with calls
that shouldn’t have been made, but others
go out because there are huge walls
of silence. Judges have their druthers.

Lynn Zinser writes about a foul committed by Thierry Henry which enabled France to become eligible for the World Cup in soccer in 20010, while causing Ireland to be eliminated (“Add Thierry Henry to List of Sports Villains, ” NYT, December 2,2009) :
Move over Bill Belichick, the sporting world has a new lead villain. In the United States at least, he will seem an unlikely one, because beyond being the handsome soccer player in that Gillette ad with Tiger Woods and Roger Federer, Thierry Henry isn’t exactly a household name. But in the tiniest second it took Henry to nudge the soccer ball with his hand toward his foot to set up France’s winning goal in a World Cup qualifier against Ireland, he became globally hated. The aggravating factors in this scenario are that Henry a) is French, which gives a lot of people a running head start on hating him and b) admitted using his hand while shrugging off responsibility for Ireland’s fate by saying, basically, “Tough noogies.”This has not gone over well, particularly in Britain, where the headlines are brutal. That’s because Henry’s “Hand Gaul” (love those British headlines!) snuffed out the hopes of a plucky Irish squad trying to make its first World Cup since 2002, where their team highlight was the star player Roy Keane getting in a dustup with the coach. Now they’ll be known for being robbed by Henry, and Henry, as Martin Rogers writes on Yahoo.com, will forever be known as a cheat on par with Argentina’s Diego Maradona, who has taken the opposite tack and refuses to own up to the 1986 “Hand of God” goal.If he actually cared about such things, Belichick might consider sending Henry a hoodie in thanks for taking him off the top of the most-

A first for a our small nation

White and black soccer balls

will be played over many fields

Some teams will win

some teams will loose

some teams will cry

some teams will be happy

Praise God Almighty

The Ballad Of “Willie, Bar The Door.”

In the town of Limavady,
I would have you all to know,
William Cummings he was born
A true son of the Roe.

And in that lovely valley
Near to Benevenagh’s feet,
“Willie, bar the door” gave
Many a soccer treat…

For roared on by his public
Throughout the fair north west
This humble Irish sportsman
Put others to the test.

And sure ‘twas in his lifetime
A legend he became
One of the best defenders
In the skilful soccer game.

And many were his exploits-
Oh! far too many to relate!
For on and off the field of soccer
To serve others was his fate.

Alas, William now has left us
But his memory still lives on,
In the hearts of those who knew him
And who loved him as their own.

And sure whenever soccer’s played,
In public park or moor,
We of his generation
Will remember “Bar the door”.

But I think it's also hard to get into soccer here. I think purely on a time level on television as well because of the ad breaks. It's something to do with that as well. You can't show a complete soccer match here. Which I kind of find a bit of an odd thing.

World Poem

I am a bluebird that flies around the world.
I am a frog that jumps to Japan.
I am a soccer ball that gets kicked to France.
I am a bluebird that flies around the world.

I am not a bomb that blows up the universe.
I am not a pan that cooks French waffles.
I am not a missile which explodes on contact.
I am not a bomb that blows up the universe.

I am a French fry that jumps around the world.
I am a pancake that flips for joy and happiness.
I am a flower that blows in the north winds and the south winds
I am a French fry that jumps around the world.

I am not a sad potato that flips for sadness.
I am not a black berry which gets destroyed after one strike.
I am not a raspberry which is red for anger.
I am not a sad potato which flips for sadness.

Zinnedine Zidane

One of the all time great players a head butt to an opponents chest caused him shame
And with such a cloud hanging over him he retires from the World game
A magician with the soccer ball his likes we may not see again
He will always be remembered as the great Zinnedine Zidane.

'Twas an alleged personal insult that got him all fired up
And with his dismissal went the great dream of France's second World cup
But he will be remembered and football fans will long recall
One of the all time masters of the World game of football.

For one moment of loss of self discipline he must wear a lifetime taint
But is there one amongst us who can claim to be a saint
You will not find many people despite what some might say
Who will turn the other cheek and from insult walk away.

For his skills a lasting impression on so many he did make
And his deeds on the football field from him one cannot take
He will always be remembered as an all time great
In the World game of football with the very best he rate.
