08 Hospital - Hospitality

I visited Hospital for a check up on an orthopaedic operation I had a few years ago. This acrostic shows my observations.

H opelessness people straring so blankly

O rthopaedic - brittle bones - broken bones

S miling nurses giving reassurance

P atients - patience - porters - posteriors

In patients - out patients - impatience

T rollies with bodies - scalpels and tea

A nxious wait - X-ray and full body scan

L ets go before they amputate everything!

I was very blessed with a good body. Never got hurt. Never was in the hospital. The only time I was in the hospital was when I would get exhausted a little bit, and go in for a check-up or something.

A Special Prayer For Meggie

Dear Lord of all creation
whom gave us the greatest gift of his son Jesus,
I come to you today but not for me,
but for a dear friend
whom is going into hospital
on Friday for an operation.
I know that she is nervous about it.
Therefore, I am coming to you dear Lord today
to ask if you would stand at her bedside
and ease all her fears
and stay at her side
until the operation is done
to ensure that she will be all right.

The bones

nothing can be more dry than a piece of human bone
they steal the vitality from you even as you look

i stare at a broken 200 year old coffin filled with
all facets of skeletons; a jamble mass of broken,
brittle, sorry state of dehydration;

joints, ankles, skulls, and thigh bones
that had taken on the years to nowhere,

a stamp of desolate whiteness that
dissipates the spirit and gnaws at the heart
with its teeth of anguish

dont get me wrong, they are just bones and nothing else,
and they arouse no fear, no ghost walks with them;

death is like the bones, dry and empty, carrying
a whiteness so dissipating i guess that's God
telling us it holds no more life, merely broken
jigsaw pieces where no more dream can be put together

Hospital Food

Coming down through the alley
Trying to walk without a sound
It doesnt really matter
cause there aint no one around
Tip toe through the alley and
Tip toe through your life
You still got it coming
Be it gun be it knife
Next thing you know
Youre eating hospital food
Karaoke castration
Take the wasp alive
Hes gonna sting you anyway
And take you to the hive
Yesterday was suckin and
Tomorrows looking bad
Who knew that today
Was the only thing I had
Hospital food
Want some hospital food
Hospital food
Delicious hospital food
In your tribute album to the world
You must never forget
To sing the one about the cat
Whos always getting wet
He always got a problem
Hes a very bitter dude
And now hes complaining
About his hospital food
Hospital food
Its gonna help the medicine go down
Want some hospital food
Gonna take a walk without a sound
A little hospital food
Helps the spoonful of sugar come up
I want some hospital food
In your blender and in my cup

Shes Got It Bad

I get off my things, I lay down in the sidelanes
I dont feel that I hide, just permanently ride
And Im waiting for your gentle rain
Something thatll help me learn
But one look at her and you know
That shes got it bad
One look in the mirror shows
I live as I want
But shes got it bad
Check it out, check it out, roll up there now
Huh!
Shes headed for a festival of heartache
Miss executive desperationyou only suck the
Blood thats spilled
Your macho imitation femininity is killed
I pray that you feel no pain
Only if it helps you learn
But one look at her and you know
That shes got it bad
One look and the mirror shows
I live as I want
But shes got it bad
She knows it
It shows!

Sphincter

I hope my good old asshole holds out
60 years it's been mostly OK
Tho in Bolivia a fissure operation
survived the altiplano hospital--
a little blood, no polyps, occasionally
a small hemorrhoid
active, eager, receptive to phallus
coke bottle, candle, carrot
banana & fingers -
Now AIDS makes it shy, but still
eager to serve -
out with the dumps, in with the condom'd
orgasmic friend -
still rubbery muscular,
unashamed wide open for joy
But another 20 years who knows,
old folks got troubles everywhere -
necks, prostates, stomachs, joints--
Hope the old hole stays young
till death, relax

Too much ado about birthdays? ? ?

.i had experience bdays...

on a hospital corridor...

doing nothing but..

battling bottled up emotions..

what had made me survive

some greetings from texters

here there and everywhere

i had too that birthday

inside a bus

nothing to sit on

i cling on a rail

and my feet ache

yet my heart is contented

for i am doing such..

for the benefit of many..

i had my birthday on..

a hospital bed..

surviving the pains

of an operation on my feet

whew what a heck i slept

and when i woke up

it was no longer my natal day

then i had a birthday

inside a church..and

the church goers sang

happy birthday to you...

and my soul leaps with joy

..then i had another one

a mass dedicated to my birthday..

and that makes me full

of God's graces..

now i am in a dream

where will my next birthday be?

in a comfort room?

in a beach?

in a hotel?

in a ship? or in heaven?

that only God knows.

The Ramparts of the Rodents

In a public hospital in Chennai city,
the rats, cats and dogs had a free run
to ICU and the Operation Theatre
with no one to one chase among them
and remained rampant
eating the breads and biscuits
and biting the patients now and then.

The rodents dared bustle
to mushroom and built an empire there
with burrows here and there to hide
and nibbled the kids with uncalled dates.
The dead bodies kept in the mortuary
had their cheeks and feet damaged.
The scientific minds of the people
sensed that some ghouls had bitten them.

The government has flexed its muscles
to hustle the rodent control teams,
to lure the rats for guzzling
the pesticides injected tomatoes.
In a Government Hospital no officer
would spend from the paltry fund
to nip the menace in the bud.
The Sanitary and the Health officers
have no time to visit these hospitals
If they go out and scare the roadside-stalls,
with stringent laws to punish
for the poor upkeep, they receive bonus
for the Diwali, Ramzan and the Christmas.

The people in our country
squat, eat, urinate and sleep
and make the premises unhygienic
with leftovers of all kinds.
The people are indigenous
still crawling to get clean habits.
But the rats are from the ramparts
of the rat temple off Bikaner
where the people throng to see
the luck-bringing white rat.

To The Meandering Lion

Paws scorching the ground
leaving a rivulet of fire
a map for the meandering

Illustrious gilt of a skin
tawny as the sun's sheen
euphoniously sewn to the bones

And your proud head
bobbing with an arrogant crown
and roaring with a subtle clout

A steadfast monolith in the cracks
of the brittle bones and incendiary sand
I want to be who you are - meandering in blithe

Medical Statistics

A wild snowstorm was raging in the city.
It was dark and the streets were deserted.
A savage wind hooted and shook the trees.
It blew the snow into her eyes.

Bundled up in winter clothes
Penny sped up the pace of her steps,
Hurrying to reach the safety of home.
The long ribbon of her red scarf
Flew and flopped in the roaring gale.

The roads were slippery and treacherous.
At a wrong step she stumbled and fell.
She landed with her outstretched hands
On the concrete sidewalk,
Hitting hard the icy surface.

In the hospital an orthopedic surgeon
Examined the x-rays. He diagnosed
A distal radius and ulna fracture
In the left forearm.

Penny broke her wrist. The doctor pulled
And tugged her bones to improve
The anatomical alignment of the broken ends
Trying to restore them to their natural position.

Then he immobilized the hand
With a plaster cast. It took about six weeks
For the broken bones to heal.

However, the orthopedist did not do
An outstanding job.
The fractured bone pieces had knitted
Rather poorly. The wrist looked
Deformed and lost part of its flexibility
Of movement.

The surgeon suggested
Reconstructive wrist operation.

“And what is the statistical risk
Of this operation? ” Penny asked.

“Oh, it is very small”, the doctor said.
“The success rate of this sort of
Corrective Osteotomy surgery
For post-traumatic wrist deformity
Is around 97 percent.
So, there is only a 3 percent chance
Of serious complications,
Such as median nerve paralysis.”

“But can you guarantee, doctor,
That I will not be included
In that small 3 percent group? ”

“No, I cannot guarantee that”, the doctor said.

Check It Out

Million young poets
Screamin?out their words
To a world full of people
Just livin?to be heard
Future generations
Ridinon the highways that we built
I hope, that they have better understanding
Check it out
Goin to work on monday
Check it out
Got yourself a family
Check it out
All utility bills have been paid
You cant tell your best buddy
That you love him
So check it out
Where does our time go
Check it out
Got a brand new house in escrow
Check it out
Sleepin?with your back
To your loved one
This is all, we have learned
About happiness
Check it out,
Forgot to say hello to my neighbours
Check it out
Sometimes i question my own behavior
Check it out
Talkin?about the girls, weve
Seen on the sly
Just to tell our souls
Were still the young lions
So check it out
Gettin?too drunk on saturdays
Check it out
Playin?football with the kids
On sundays
Check it out
Soaring with the eagles all week long
And this is all, we have learned
About living
This is all, we have learned
About living
A million young poets
Screamin?out their words
Maybe someday
Those words will be heard
By future generations
Ridin?on the highways that we built
Maybe theyll have a better understanding
Check it out
Maybe theyll have a better understanding
Check it out
Maybe theyll have a better understanding
Check it out
Maybe theyll have a better understanding
Check it out
Hope theyll have a better understanding
Check it out ...

Brittle Bones

Though I am an old man
With my bones very brittle,
Though I am a poor old man
Worth very little,
Yet I suck at my long pipe
At peace in the sun,
I do not fret nor much regret
That my work is done.

If I were a young man
With my bones full of marrow,
Oh, if I were a bold young man
Straight as an arrow,
And if I had the same years
To live once again,
I would not change their simple range
Of laughter and pain.

If I were a young man
And young was my Lily,
A smart girl, a bold young man,
Both of us silly.
And though from time before I knew
She'd stab me with pain,
Though well I knew she'd not be true,
I'd love her again.

If I were a young man
With a brisk, healthy body,
Oh, if I were a bold young man
With love of rum toddy,
Though I knew that I was spiting
My old age with pain,
My happy lip would touch and sip
Again and again.

If I were a young man
With my bones full of marrow,
Oh, if I were a bold young man
Straight as an arrow,
I'd store up no virtue
For Heaven's distant plain,
I'd live at ease as I did please
And sin once again.

Sonnet: Human Love’s a Mirror

O, human love is brittle as a glass!
And breaks into pieces, you cannot glue,
Enticing people’s hearts, until they pass;
Succeeding in the hands of just a few!

You ought to handle it with supreme care,
Lest accidentally it falls and breaks;
Most times, it shows that life is still unfair,
Or mountains out of mole-hills, surely makes.

Sometimes, the silvering may much peel off,
Reflecting faces as weird as can be;
Sometimes, it makes you laugh or cry or scoff,
And shows that life can turn at times nasty.

Lucky are some to witness love life-long!
For most others, ’tis just a dainty song.

A New Life

you slept on your
years like rip van winkle
and you come
to me
unable to say
what time
is it where you
are what the heck
is this place
so new to you

your hair white
begging on your
knees your teeth
yellowed by
unbrushed years
your eyes
blankly trying
to know
what this world
brings you

wake up
to a new day

a new life,
welcome

lost brother
this is my hand
that you have
long forgotten

January

With numbing cold, biting at my brittle bones
I feel many years giving me a wake up shake
Gripping my coat through the more gripping cold
I feel the world has grown old.

January I cried for my Mom the first time
She probably cried and then smiled for my tears
She surely is yet smiling for my thoughts through these years

For the tears that she shed were at giving me birth
January is the warmest time on earth
