A metaphor
Some stay chastised
Some henpecked
Rain checked
Some battered
Some under dark shades disguised
Some despise
And are despised
And yet even after so much brutality
Mixed words
Fragile tears at innocence
They bear life
Under the weight
Of heavy handed
Leery stares
Full of meat markets
And check out queues
And in between
The prayers
And confession
The pure white essence of 'a fading grey'
Between the mockery and the flattery
The sunday joint and the battery
Amidst the prism of a thousand scrutinsing eyes
After the truth
And the lies
They bear one truth your life
Precious forever her fruitfulness
Woman standing amidst a flood of tears
Unforgotten her mark
Her blood on the stamp of history
Amidst the warring world
She carried you
To were you are standing
No metaphor for woman better
Than her womb
It speaks life!

Sonnet: A Prayer to God
Amidst all chaos Lord, bring order God;
Amidst the darkness Lord, show me Thine light;
Amidst the atheism, give me Thine word;
Amidst my weakness show, Thine divine might.
Amidst life’s sultriness Lord, give me breeze;
Amidst the mire Lord, could Thou me pull?
Amidst life’s stresses Lord, give me mind’s peace;
Amidst the storms of life, give me a lull.
Amidst my despair Lord, give me new hope;
Amidst my temptations, God, let me win;
Amidst life’s hilly tracts, show me a slope;
Amidst my struggles Lord, let me not sin.
Amidst my foes and woes, show me haven;
Amidst my worldliness, give me Heaven.

A Cross Amidst Thorns
A stream flows in a swamp
Rain falls on a barren ground
A saint in a lion’s den.
A dove amongst owls…
There’s a cross amidst thorns.
Innocence dwells with guilt
Hope lingers in a despairing people
Life struggles with the grave.
Love unmasks into hatred…
There’s a cross amidst thorns.
Peace competes with the wrathful hand of anarchy
Conscience fights with corruption
The truth passes along with deception
Righteousness boasts with evil
There’s a cross amidst thorns
There’s a cross amidst thorns
Hope radiates from despair
Light reigns above darkness
Faith conquers fear
There’s a cross amidst thorns

Sonnet – Amidst
Amidst pitch -black darkness, God shows a light;
Amidst a Forest thick, He shows a way;
Amidst black clouds, He brings a moonlit night;
Amidst sorrows, God gives a happy day.
Amidst the desert, Oasis God shows;
Amidst the stormy Sea, He brings calm;
Amidst much strife, He opens newer doors;
Amidst much hopelessness, a helping palm.
Amidst tempest, God shows a bright light-house;
Amidst the glaciers, much sought-after peak;
Amidst our solitude, He gives a spouse;
Amidst the ravines deep, the lost lamb meek.
Amidst the chaos, God ushers new hope,
Amidst the gloom, He gives the church a Pope.

Room For The Life
Hey there, you lady in tears,
Do you think that they care if theyre real, woman?
They just take it as part of the deal.
Lost in your men and the games you play.
Trying to prove that youre better, woman.
But you neednt get heavy with them.
Like it or not, we were built tough,
Because were woman.
No, we never die for long,
While weve got that little life
To live for, where its hid inside.
No, we never die for long,
Oh! woman, two in one,
Theres room for a life in your womb, woman,
Inside of you can be two, woman,
Theres room for a life in your womb, woman,
Mama woman, aha!
Night after night in the quiet house,
Plaiting her hair by the fire, woman,
With no lover to free her desire,
How long do you think she can stick it out?
How long do you think before shell go out, woman?
Hey! get up on your feet and go get it, now.
Like it or not, we keep bouncing back,
Because were woman.
No, we never die for long,
While weve got that little life
To live for, where its hid inside.
Oh! woman, two in one,
Theres room for a life in your womb, woman,
Inside of you can be two, woman,
Theres room for a life in your womb, woman,
Mama woman, aha!
A-mama-woma-mama-woman-aha!
A-mama-woma-mama-woman-aha!
Oh, mama-woman, two-in-a-one, aha!
Oh, two in one, aha!
Oh, woman! woman! woman! woman!
Theres room for a life in your womb!
Theres room for a life in your womb!
Two in one, aha!
Two in one! two in one! two in one!
Room for a life in your womb.

Battered Doll
A red dress for blood spilt,
Torn blouse for flesh rent;
Ladders in the stockings –
A rung for every callous blow landed.
Scuffed shoes winked about the kicks –
After all, bruise-gorged eyes can’t –
Just permanently closed.
Burning tears were scant warmth
Against a chill from ugly cries.
Lipstick smudges on the chin to
Nullify all vestiges of beauty –
Those that constituted rare patches
Of purest cream skin, from
Days of feminine joy, telling once
Upon a time there was an angel…
But now, a battered doll.

Truthful Lies
The truth in that
Is that the truth will never be truth.
To them,
It's all lies, because they lie.
The truth is masked,
It bears no light.
It is carried a thousand miles,
Tossed into stones,
Mixed in with pride.
Stamped on postcards.
It is shuffled amongst the lies,
It is marked as spam.
The breaths that carry,
The minds that corrupt it,
They bear no guilt.
The truth is never forgotten.
No matter how fictitious it's made.
Through time it is mended,
Sometimes changed back into the truth itself.
It is rejected.
It is simply the truth they want to see.
A lie is the truth,
Because it is made to be what they need.

Rain Tears
Rain, tears, rain, tears,
Melding in torrential fears:
Chill of cloud; saddened eye-
In either way, a latent cry.
Rain, tears, rain, tears,
Married under sceptic jeers:
‘They'll never last.' Methinks not true, for
Either way, forever blue.
Rain, tears, rain, tears,
Simple love with lacy cares,
Their intercourse will ne'er refrain
From rain and tears and tears and rain.

White hope
Dont despair, dont despair, there is always hope amidst trouble.
Stresses caught up in life may let loose the feelings of hope.
But there is always hope amidst trouble.
Storms of darkness may ruin the balance of life.
But there is always hope amidst trouble,
that leads you through the darkest times of life,
that will let you to move pass the turmoil’s of life.
There is always hope amidst trouble.
My Idea Of A Good Day
There will be no sleep
The pains of hunger
The searing burn of thirst
Discomfort
But not discontentment
A feeling of loneliness amongst the overwhelming presence
A feeling of depression amidst the joy
A feeling of chaos amidst the peace
A feeling of confusion amidst the wisdom
A feeling of dejection amidst the love
There will be success
The delights of a feast
The coolness of an iced drink
Contentment
Complacency
A feeling of completion amidst inner brokenness
A feeling of happiness amidst inner death
A feeling of peacefulness amidst inner turmoil
A feeling of wisdom amidst inner misunderstanding
A feeling of camaraderie amidst an inner and overwhelming loneliness
Here's a hint, my idea of a good day isn't based on feelings.

The Pastor
He was a boy next door from the fishing village of Galle
Who answered his tug from heaven like Saul abiding to God's call
A quiet voice peeled away the solemnity of his peace
As the boy transformed in tune to a new life's lease
Then he joined the halls of a budding boys seminary
Yet one eve while going to town (Kohuwala) , he encountered Marie
A dainty lass with a heavenly gait and an eternal smile
As his life metamorphosed from the road less traveled, to a woman's guile
Yet the pull of God was complete and steadfast
Like a giant arm from heaven steering your heart
As the prayers parted his lips with a solemnity unforeseen
A life of prayer and solitude beckoned away from his queen
Then one day as he took his solemn oath
Amidst the white overalls there was a lass who loathed
Her lover's commitment to God, unwavering, even amidst her passion and love
As his lips parted with agreement, to serve the downtrodden with fraternal love
Then as years passed she would finally meet a knight in shining armor
As the heart would yield from the past's hurt to welcome splendorous amor
She would look at the heavens and thank God for the new guy in her life
As she embarked on a future not of a queen but of a content wife
Yet amidst the love she carried for the youth in her path
She could never forget the touch nor the boyish grin of her prince of her past
As the marshmellows roasted above the camping inferno
She would lean next to the youth and whisper 'I want you forever, at hello'
Then the day finally arrived as she parted from her parents
As showers sprung forth, blessings in their monsoon torrents
As two became one, amidst the showers of providence
Love blossomed between two hearts in their unique resonance
Amidst the audience there was a youth in a white robe
Who wiped away the tears that sprung forth
As a collage of their past ran amok his naive psyche
As he was about to lose forever, his most treasured key
The key to his heart that reigned even amidst God's calling
The key that turned his heart to unconditional love's falling
The key to his happiness that loomed large like Nimbus in a monsoon sky
The key that he threw away to answer God's call from the heavenly sky
Then as the ceremony reached its absorbing zenith
There was a heart waiting in a corner, beneath
Wanting so much now, to stand on the elevated alter
As the proceedings transformed from solemnity, to love's falter
Amidst the jubilation of the newly wedded couple
Adam and Eve in marital bliss though in the presence of a priestly apple
As she parted the alter, walking back, holding her beloved's hand
She glanced at her past, a final gaze at her much treasured man
What she saw in her haste, was his eyes parting with tears
Like monsoon from the getaways in a backdropp of fears
Fears beckoned, of solitude, in the absence of her love
Has he lost forever, his beloved treasure trove
Tears from his eyes, transformed to a downpour from her getaways
As she valiantly tried to shroud the tears away
Yet the truth came forth like a storm to a calm sea
As she finally bowed to a reality that she did not foresee
She knew now for certain that the love of her life was the boyish youth
Who strolled casually, years back, to the Kohuwala phone booth
Then as love sparkled in a gaze, like a shooting meteor shower
The boyish pastor smiled amidst the tears of his lover
Yet she was gone now, forever, for an eternity
As he embraced his future sans her serenading amity
The tears dried, as past lovers parted, nothing left to foster
The catastrophe of love, between a goddess and her boyish pastor

There Will Be Images
in the mirages
amidst the desert heat
there will be images
fifty or so
for one real tiger
multiplying all the
fears of being
devoured
in the hunger of
its mouth
and the sharpness of
its fangs
this is the hunger of the mind
amidst the heat of the quest
for knowledge and truth
in the rush
what is open for viewing
is the scenery of lies
the key to the door
is the night of peace
the moon in full view
to the eyes that weep

Flat Harry
Flat harry
Held onto his ship of 'one dimensionals'
His poster dream was full of ruin
His passion was to be found in the wreckage
These relics of some ancient grief
Flat harry kept a piece of the 'Titanic'
Under his bed
With his darkest dream
Flat harry was full of flaws and held his scars well
In a mirror crowd
He was the chat show celebrity
He gathered up his wounds for applause
He opened up his milk white pores
Knowing only clear white transparency
He slept at night with dreams of drowning
In someone elses life
Harry held onto his inflatables
His half intact ego
His 'tell it all confessional'
His 'dog collar' and his choirboy looks'
And someow he always floated to the surface
Amidst the so much ruin
The blank faced ocean
Still too shallow to drown
Head just above the abyss
And not for one second
Did he think
'There must be more to life than this? '

Guns and their shadows
Under guns and their shadows
amidst men and women and children
life spirit lessens,
innocence suffers,
dream dies,
expectation extincts.
Under guns and their shadows
amidst men and women and children
hopes become horrors,
desires become despairs,
trust becomes tenions,
smiles become sighs.
Under guns and their shadows
amidst men and women and children
word means whispers,
home means house,
homeland means ex land,
freedom means fantasy.
Under guns and their shadows
amidst men and women and children
life still goes on,
some where a force moves on,
binding and blending every one
for guns can spit only fires and not lives.

The Love Sonnets Of Proteus. Part III: Gods And False Gods: LXXIV
THE MOCKERY OF LIFE
God! What a mockery is this life of ours!
Cast forth in blood and pain from our mother's womb,
Most like an excrement, and weeping showers
Of senseless tears: unreasoning, naked, dumb,
The symbol of all weakness and the sum:
Our very life a sufferance.--Presently,
Grown stronger, we must fight for standing--room
Upon the earth, and the bare liberty
To breathe and move. We crave the right to toil.
We push, we strive, we jostle with the rest.
We learn new courage, stifle our old fears,
Stand with stiff backs, take part in every broil.
It may be that we love, that we are blest.
It may be, for a little space of years,
We conquer fate and half forget our tears.

no, it’s beyond words.
say a word your word
if you need,
death loss tears grief gone ever
it’s beyond all these
take them hold them
press them tear them
squeeze from them
the tears of things
tears at the heart of things
squeeze this pure pure liquid
from these from life itself
so pure it’s nameless
so pure it’s the being
of your being,
the truth of truth,
the beauty, of all the sadness
that ever,
so pure, so true
that never again;
so pure, it could be
joy or love or grace
wash in its purity
this is life

Woman dance
Woman fight
Woman win
Woman cry
Now this woman's pride
lies in her tears
Woman's pride...............

Poetry
These words are not porcelain
Nor are they sculpted from a certain glass
Nor do they shine even after the hour is passed
But they break like flesh and bone
They are a metaphor
For china
For fragile things
And underneath lies the poetry
Beneath the skin
It lives and breathes
Some senses burn hot
Some passion dry cold
But beneath the tempest
Lies the still hour glass
Of all thats told
And these words are the flesh and the bone
The lines in your head
The shadow in the photograph
The stories you have lived
For who can read you, after words?
Who can know the journey you have taken?
Or understand such imprints in the sand?
And yet they the live and leave their sign
In the body of one life

Love Did Not Come
love did not come to me
though I have seen it standing cold and frozen in the rain
love did not come to me
though I have called out loud and long
It did not hear it's name
Nor did it turn to see my shadow fading, gone
Or catch the waves that swept a bleak and barren shore
Or see the ruins of a heart, that looked on love no more
Then finding it was strong with love, in absence gone,
Rose up and carried on, and looked for love no more!

An Olympic Poem
A nation presents to the world
amidst a celebration of unity
how sportsmanship and humility
stand with pride and success
that no colour nor religion
separates man or woman
it is the strength and belief
those years spent in training
revealed to the eyes of the world
it is in that final breath spoken
''all we ask is to compete,
all we ask to to do our best''
the will be cheers and tears
the will be great joy and sorrow
but come the end this truth
a nation stands to applaud
and to say thank you
