Tortoise

Short of legs but not insight
Eyes awe bound
Belly earth borne,
Back home packed
Gait monastic

Native of no land,
Call led crawls, sense fed-
A bite here, a munch there
Bidding Time to slough out
Of this shell clad life.

Red With Native Blood

Give them back their bloody land,
red with native blood.
We have soiled it so, with our hands,
red with native blood.
The earth was stained, when we first came,
red with native blood.
We stole their domain, with a barbaric claim:
that we were civilised and they were not,
that they were the savages and we were not,
when we ravaged the land that began to clot,
red with native blood.

Not content with genocide
we interned them in reserves.
To break their culture
and tribal ways;
in stealing children
the state was brave,
to turn their women
into household slaves,
and hope their men would die,
unmourned, in lonely graves;
a problem to us no more.

Give them back their bloody land,
red with native blood.
Acknowledge their just demands,
wash the stains from our hands,
give them back their bloody land,
red with native blood.

Homeward Bound

I want to sit at home in my rockin chair
I dont want to travel the world
As far as Im concerned Ive had my share
But times more precious than gold
I dont wanna see another airplane seat
Or another hotel room
The home life to me seems really neat
I just wanna unpack for good
Buy me a ticket homeward bound (homeward bound)
Buy me a ticket homeward bound (oh homeward bound
Well it all seems the same when youve done it before
Theres no difference in the style
Theres no end insight or my own front door
Ill be a stay at home for awhile
So Ill have another drink and a cigarette
Just to console myself some how
Its not too bad if you can forget
Ive just got to find a way somehow
Buy me a ticket homeward bound (homeward bound)
Buy me a ticket homeward bound (oh homeward bound
Buy me a ticket homeward bound (homeward bound)

Its A Matter Of Time

(words & music by clive westlake)
Its a matter of time before I go back there
A matter of time before I go home
I have been way from her now for a long time
And Ive lived a life I thought that it should be
Its a long, long way from now to maybe sometime
And the waiting round is really killing me
Its a matter of time before I go back there
A matter of time oh lord, before I go home
Its a long way I know and the goin aint easy
Shell see me again its a matter of time
I think Ill take a train right early in the morning
Just to see how far I get along the way
But the trains dont run too often only sometimes
So I guess Id better wait another day
Its a matter of time before I go back there
A matter of time before I go home
Its a long way I know and the goin aint easy
Shell see me again, its just a matter of time
Shell see me I know its a matter of time

I Will Take You Home

Little girl lost
In a forest of dreams.
Its a dark old wood
And its damp with dew.
Hoot owl hoots
For a moment it seems
Something big and cold
Got ahold of you.
Just when everything gets scary,
Daddys come round for his darlin again.
Hold my hand with your little fingers.
Daddys loving arms gonna gather you in.
Aint no way the bogeyman can get you,
You can close your eyes, the world is gonna let you,
Your daddys here and never will forget you,
I will take you home.
I will take you home.
Gonna carry you back home
In my arms.
I will take you home.
Long is the road
We must travel on down.
Short are the legs
That will struggle behind.
I wish I knew for sure
Just where were bound,
What we will be doin
And what were gonna find.
Wherever we go, there will be birds to cheer you
Flowers to color in the fields around.
Wherever we go, Ill be right here near you
You cant get lost when youre always found.
Aint no fog thats thick enough to hide you
Your daddys gonna be right here beside you
If your fears should start to get inside you.
I will take you home.
I will take you home.
Gonna carry you back home
In my arms.
I will take you home.

Babys Gotten Good At Goodbye

What a rotten day
This turned out to be
I still cant believe
Shed leave so easily
She just packed all her things
Threw them into a pile
Then she loaded her car
And said, after awhile
Shed done this before
But this time she didnt cry
Chorus:
Thats why Im sitting on the front steps
Staring down the road
Wondering if shell come back
This time I dont know
And after she packed
When she looked back
There were no tears in her eyes
And thats got me worried
Thinking maybe my babys
Gotten good at goodbye
All the times before
Shed break down and cry
Shed make her threats
But her heart wasnt set on goodbye
She just wanted me to hear
What she had to say
Now Im lost for words
Since she went away
She may not return
For this time she didnt cry
Chorus

Leaving Home

My bags are packed
and I’m leaving home.
My old heart wants to roam.
I don’t know where I am going
and I don’t know how long I’ll be gone
or when I’ll be back again.
There is wanderlust in my soul,
a call I have to answer.
My bags are packed
and I am leaving today.
I will be back when my wanderings are though.
How many days that will be,
is hard to tell, only that I must go.

God Bless Our Native Land

God bless our native land,
Land of the newly free,
Oh may she ever stand
For truth and liberty.

God bless our native land,
Where sleep our kindred dead,
Let peace at thy command
Above their graves be shed.

God help our native land,
Bring surcease to her strife,
And shower from thy hand
A more abundant life.

God bless our native land,
Her homes and children bless,
Oh may she ever stand
For truth and righteousness.

As Old As The Sea

Place the shell up to your ear.
Listen quietly and you will hear
the sound of the sea that gave it life
that says to you 'I'm near.
I've never been too far from you.
My creatures in the darkened blue
are in love with their home in its vastness
for it abounds with life as you do.

When you hear the sound of the shell
it will draw you back to the deep blue swell
where the tides are drifting with the moon
to remind you that there is no hell.
There's only the land and the sea, the sea.
It knows that it will always be.
And the shell that you hold up to your ear
reminds you of an ancient memory.

Bound For Glory

Out on the trans-canada highway
There was a girl hitchhiking with her dog
Fireflies buzzin round her head
Like candles in the fog.
He was three miles down the road
Tryin to stay up, but he knew that he couldnt
She was looking for a ride through the night
But out there, who wouldnt.
They were bound for glory
Bound for living on the edge
They were bound for each other
Like two comets heading for a bed.
She had a new way of living
New way of looking at life
He had an 84 international and two kids
He left back home with his wife.
He was tired of writin letters to himself
And living in the dark
She was open to suggestions
And some say she had a broken heart.
He had everything he wanted
til it all turned out to be a job
One fallen asleep trucker
And a girl hitchhiking with her dog.
They were bound for glory
Bound for living on the edge
They were bound for each other
Like two comets heading for a bed.
She had a new way of living
New way of looking at life
He had an 84 international and two kids
He left back home with his wife.
Out on the trans-canada highway
The sun came climbing up the cab
By the time it hit the window they were wakin up
From what little sleep they had.
When that heat hit the blankets
They were looking for love at second sight
Just starin in each others eyes
Findin it in the mornin light.
They were bound for glory
Bound for living on the edge
They were bound for each other
Like two blankets layin on a bed.
She had a new way of living
New way of looking at life
He had an 84 international and two kids
He left back home with his wife.

Spring MCMXL

London Bridge is falling down, Rome's burnt and Babylon
The Great is now but dust; yet still Spring must
Swing back through Time's continual arc to earth.
Though every land become as a black field
Dunged with the dead, drenched by the dying's blood,
Still must a punctual goddess waken and ascend
The rocky stairs, up into earth's chilled air,
And pass upon her mission through those carrion ranks,
Picking her way among a maze of broken brick
To quicken with her footsteps the short sooty grass between;
While now once more their futile matchwood empires flare and blaze
And through the smoke men gaze with bloodshot eyes
At the translucent apparition, clad in trembling nascent green
Of one they still can recognize, though scarcely understand.

The Girl From Yesterday

It wasnt reall sad the way they said good-bye
Or maybe it just hurt so bad she couldnt cry
He packed his things, walked out the door and drove away
And she became the girl from yesterday
He took a plane across the sea
To some foreign land
She stayed at home and tried to understand
How someone who had been so close could be so far away
And she became the girl from yesterday
She doesnt know whats right
She doesnt know whats wrong
She only knows the pain that comes from waiting for so long
And she doesnt count the teardrops
That shes cried while hes away
Because she knows deep in her heart
That hell be back someday
The lights on in the window; shes waiting by the phone
Talking to a memory thats never coming home
She dreams of his returning and the things that he might say
But shell always be the girl from yesterday
Yeh, shell always be the girl from yesterday

Grey Lady Of The Sea

(lebon)
Youve whispered out loud
But your breeze doesnt bend
Were lying in the palm of your hand
No land we see, no place to be
The salt of your tears, adds stain to our hearts
Theres no long years can tear us apart
Our futures entwined with your past
Because when we lie awake
Well be thinking of you
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Bravado is all but gone
And patience is down
You scared us and youve turned us around
But you wont let us drown
Because when we lie asleep
Well be dreaming of you
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
So answer us when we call
And say if you think were old
When life is so short we can stay long
But youll never be alone
Because one day well return
Well be waiting for you
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home
Blow, grey lady blow your ships back home

My Native Land!

WHERE is the minstrel's native land?
Where the flames of light and feeling glow;
Where the flowers are wreathed for beauty's brow;
Where the bounding heart swells strong and high,
With holy hopes which may not die--
There is my native land!

What is that bright land's music name?
Ere it bent its neck to a foreign yoke,
It was called the land of the broad strong oak--
The land of the free--the German land--
But her sons lie slain by the stranger's hand,
And she weeps sad tears of shame.

Why does the minstrel's country weep?
That the hurricane's rage hath bowed the pride
Of those who should stem the rising tide;
That her princes quail--and that none will hear
Her holy words of might and fear--
Therefore my land must weep!

To whom does the minstrel's country call?
It calls to the silent heavenly powers,
With despair, as the thunder darkly lowers,
For its freedom--for those who should break its chain--
For the hand that never strikes in vain--
To these doth my country call!

For what does the minstrel's country sigh?
That the bloodhound may hunt beyond the bound
Of the soil which brave hearts make holy ground;
That the serf may cease; and our sons be free,
Or those who have borne them, cease to be--
For this does my country sigh!

And still doth the minstrel's country hope?
Her hope is firm, for her cause is good--
That her brave will rise, and her true in blood;
And that God the avenger, our fathers' God,
Will mark the tears that bedew her sod--
Such is my country's hope!

The lofty legs are the beauty.

Short legs and short waist are the ducks.
Long legs and short waists are the geese.

Lofty legs without waists are cranes
Who is graceful?
The crane stands out; the tall woman stands out.

The Room Is Bare

blackbird fallen;
candle wax on the table.
lie to me, love me
one more time...
the arching of your soul,
wrapped in legs around me...
the cry of the ocean
just outside the shell...
i kiss you, you taste
like my wanting,
words mean nothing;
black and white photographs
in a world of color...
i can feel the rumble
of the train on the tracks,
you bite my shoulder....
i open my eyes...
and the room is bare!

Day Of Recongning

upon the world i stand
with my scar torn back
among the midst of the wind
i blow a kiss
to sound up the trumpet
my fathers bidding is the
last bidding so repent children
of the father cause the final
moment is and the finest
moment by far
as we see the beginning of an empire
the downfall of eras
look as heaven armies conquers
land, air and sea
my father is that of the lord and let all
records show he is that of the world
judge jury and executioner
it time his children came home

A Water Melon's Truth

Roving back through wild centuries
At rust and ripeness time
To land blood wet, martyrs fed,
A water melon still conceives
What alone bears peace-a sweet heart,
Summer's blood, timber scent-

Each slice for life time sweet,
Munch you as you would grapes or kisses.
Her only hope, wish for nothing on earth
Save eternal be her internal love's season,
Akin to sea plain where no autumn comes,
Though all things go, not one lasts.

Life's Too Short

I let you escape, slip through my fingers
We made our mistakes, but memories linger
Each time I turn a corner I swear I see your face
But I'm standing here alone in the wonder
What I really needed, what made me run away?
Was it just somebody's spell I was under
(Chorus)
We all love on borrowed time, tomorrow's flying blind
And life's too short to be living without you
You laughed at my jokes, broke down my defenses
It's like my heart just awoke, and brought back my senses
I've got my motor running, it's all that I can do
Cause every road I'm taking, is leading back to you
Repeat Chorus
We all love on borrowed time, tomorrow's flying blind
And life's too short to be living without you
And life's too short
And life's too short
I give in I can't go it alone, yeah I'm done now I know that you're gone
I need someone to save me and life's too short, too short
I give in I can't go it alone
Life's too short to be living without you
Life's too short
I give in I can't go it alone
Life's too short can't be living without you
Life's too short
I give in I can't go it alone
I can live without you
Life's too short
I give in I can't go it alone
Life's too short to be living without you

From Worlds Within My Dreams

I feel a kindred with you,
My native...
Land.
And brethren of spoken tongues.
Those of my ancestors,
Every one.
I feel a kindred with you,
My native...
Home I've come to know.

I feel the wind coming to sweep,
And stir the prairies.
I see the tumbleweed roll.
And swirls of dust enfold it!

I feel the rhythm with each drum beat.
I paint those symbols I see,
From skies above.
And when they land,
We beings meet.
We greet as if lost souls.

I feel a kindred with you,
My native...
From worlds within my dreams you've come.
To me and others who have not succumbed...
With misgivings of a tortured faith.
Never in doubt but sometimes clouded!

I feel a kindred with you,
My native...
Land.
And brethren of spoken tongues.
Those of my ancestors,
Every one.
I feel a kindred with you,
My native...
Home I've come to know,
From worlds within my dreams.
