The Coranna

Fast by his wild resounding River
The listless Coran lingers ever;
Still drives his heifers forth to feed,
Soothed by the gorrah's humming reed;
A rover still unchecked will range,
As humour calls, or seasons change;
His tent of mats and leathern gear
All packed upon the patient steer.
'Mid all his wanderings hating toil,
He never tills the stubborn soil;
But on the milky dam relies,
And what spontaneous earth supplies.
Or, should long-parching droughts prevail,
And milk, and bulbs, and locusts fail,
He lays him down to sleep away
In languid trance the weary day;
Oft as he feels gaunt hunger's stound,
Still tightening famine's girdle round;
Lulled by the sound of the Gareep,
Beneath the willows murmuring deep:
Till thunder-clouds, surcharged with rain,
Pour verdure o'er the panting plain;
And call the famished Dreamer from his trance,
To feast on milk and game, and wake the moon-light dance.

He stole his eyes from a milk-glass moon - Villanelle

He stole his eyes from a milk-glass moon,
From drops of peridot scattered at sea,
Hidden beneath a moon-shadowed ruin.

His father not caring where or with whom,
Or from what rare ocean his being might be-
He stole his eyes from a milk-glass moon.

He learnt his letters from a dark winged loon
Who flew where the mountains caress the trees,
Hidden beneath a moon-shadowed ruin.

His speech was a garble of false and truth,
Whistling like a hollow piped reed,
He stole his eyes from a milk-glass moon.

His eyes a contagion of waters blue
And brackish trunks of underwater trees
Hidden beneath a moon-shadowed ruin.

His normal voice wove a threadless tune,
Brought close the mermaids, hungry to feed;
He stole his eyes from a milk-glass moon,
Hidden beneath a moon-shadowed ruin.

Terrestrial Trance

We're coming to the end
Vibrationally spent
The cycle, in effect
The Earth's field should not neglect

Wake me up from this trance
This sleeping slumber slants
The Sun and switch, within range
A denser frequent change

Manipulation narrative
It seems quite primitive
Control is relative
The source alternative

External forces don't endorse us
Imprisoned in three-dimensional
Our denial is now on trial
And detachment's now on file

Wake me up from this trance
This sleeping slumber slants
The Sun and switch, within range
A denser frequent change

The Voices Of The Rain

LAST night, when under troubled skies
The storm went marching o'er the plain,
An elfin music seemed to rise,
A singing in the rain.
At first it seemed a prattling child
That played alone in young delight,
And then it seemed a joy gone wild
That sang along the night.
The raindrops, with their steady beat
And burden musical and low,
Were like a thousand little feet
That hurried to and fro.
And where the runnels gushed and streamed
And soaked the grass-roots, dry and brown,
A busy band of fairies seemed
To patter up and down.
The air was full of whisperings,
And all the teeming dark was rife
With stir and call that told of things
That woke anew to life.
And then across the darkened waste
A sudden shouting wind was hurled;
It seemed a messenger in haste
With tidings for the world.
But, till across that streaming scene
The wind went rushing down the plain,
I did not guess what they might mean —
Those voices of the rain.
They said: 'Farewell to drought and dearth,
To Famine, hollow-eyed and nude!'
They said: 'We are the teeming Earth,
The gift of plenitude!'
They said, those voices of the rain:
'We are the flesh and blood and breath;
We are the meat, the fruit, the grain
That succour all from death!'
They said: 'Wherever we may pass
The hour of plenty comes to birth;
We spread the banquet of the grass
Around about the Earth!
'We call,' they said, 'and lo, the seed
Within its mother-soil is stirred;
The seasons round 'tis ours to feed
The fruit, the tree, the bird.
'By us the petal is unfurled,
The flower in purple splendour blooms;
We fill the markets of the world,
And feed its hungry looms.'
The moon sent forth one silver ray,
The fairy voices ceased to sing;
Yet far away, and far away,
I heard thanks echoing.
For cattle lowed throughout the night
In deep content across the plain;
And I, too, thanked, with meet delight,
The voices of the rain.

Marshalling Of The Achaians

[Iliad, B. II V. 455]

Like as a terrible fire feeds fast on a forest enormous,
Up on a mountain height, and the blaze of it radiates round far,
So on the bright blest arms of the host in their march did the splendour
Gleam wide round through the circle of air right up to the sky-vault.
They, now, as when swarm thick in the air multitudinous winged flocks,
Be it of geese or of cranes or the long-necked troops of the wild-swans,
Off that Asian mead, by the flow of the waters of Kaistros;
Hither and yon fly they, and rejoicing in pride of their pinions,
Clamour, shaped to their ranks, and the mead all about them resoundeth;
So those numerous tribes from their ships and their shelterings poured forth
On that plain of Scamander, and horrible rumbled beneath them
Earth to the quick-paced feet of the men and the tramp of the horse-hooves.
Stopped they then on the fair-flower'd field of Scamander, their thousands
Many as leaves and the blossoms born of the flowerful season.
Even as countless hot-pressed flies in their multitudes traverse,
Clouds of them, under some herdsman's wonning, where then are the milk-pails
Also, full of their milk, in the bountiful season of spring-time;
Even so thickly the long-haired sons of Achaia the plain held,
Prompt for the dash at the Trojan host, with the passion to crush them.
Those, likewise, as the goatherds, eyeing their vast flocks of goats, know
Easily one from the other when all get mixed o'er the pasture,
So did the chieftains rank them here there in their places for onslaught,
Hard on the push of the fray; and among them King Agamemnon,
He, for his eyes and his head, as when Zeus glows glad in his thunder,
He with the girdle of Ares, he with the breast of Poseidon.

Fairytale Rains

For long there’s no rain, for long
The dying soil stretches its tongue
Towards the firmament, begging on its knees
‘Rain, come rain, even if a little, please’!
It’s eons since the clouds squeezed out
The last drops, knowing they’re all in vain
No yield would come of them, no sprout
Horrified they wilted to be never back again!

The race progressed with their grim toil
Forgetting rain is born in the soil
Dreaming of a distant thunder
Yearning the clouds to come asunder!

My grandpa told me a fairytale
That once on earth the rain fell
It washed the body and made souls clean
Lives shot up to make the earth green!

A river bears a burden

A river bears a burden
It carries far downstream,
And no man's eyes will see it
Or fathom what it means.

A river bears a burden
Beneath it's swirling toil.
It's rippling edges teasing
The sodden, silent soil.

A river bears a burden
Beneath our nightly dreams,
Our temporal excursions
Along it's watered seams.

A river bears a burden
Of many dreaming feet,
Searching all it's alleys
To a dreamer's slow heartbeat.

A river bears a burden;
It will not wake our sleep,
But carries us forever
Our roaming souls, to meet.

Suburbia

How can anybody ever change
When the whole world wants you to stay the same
I guess you just take the blame
Of being someone who had to find her own way
In your dreams you're fabulous
But in your life ridiculous
See Alice had to go to Wonderland
To sip on some thee who left her in a trance yeah
[chorus]
In Suburbia It always stays the same
How can anybody ever change
Uh oh uh oh uh
In Suburbia People never change
When the world wants you to stay the same
Uh oh uh oh uh
Life for you is just a great big game
You have no control and all you feel is shame
Don't try to numb the pain
Tomorrow comes and you will be ok
In your dreams you're fabulous
But in your life ridiculous
See Alice had to go to Wonderland
To sip on some thee who left her in a trance yeah
[chorus 2x]
Uh oh uh oh uh In a trance yeah
Uh oh uh oh uh In a trance yeah
Uh oh uh oh uh
In Suburbia It always stays the same
In Suburbia People never change
[chorus]
Uh oh uh oh uh In a trance yeah
Uh oh uh oh uh In trance yeah
Uh oh uh oh uh Uh oh uh oh uh
In a trance yeah Uh oh uh oh uh

O What A Climate Today!

o what a climate today!

o where is the sun that squeezed dry my blood into sweat so long?

the day unusually rolls up and sets aside the sparkling quilt of the sun;

and the ashen clouds have spread their thin mats all over the skies

and the cheerful winds on joyful feet spread happiness everywhere

on top of all, as a crowning glory, there is a dreamy rain -

no, i cannot call this rain, or a misty fall, nor a soft drizzle-

it is of dreamy drops, here and there, distanced by long seconds,

and tossed far and wide by the sprinting and sporting wind,

sending shivers of thrill into the streams of blood

and giving birth to spontaneous expressions of ecstasy;

it is a rainless rain, raining joy and dance -

the light is cool and gentle and not hurting;

it is the winds that create the festival of joy

and spray laughter that bubbles up amidst the flowery trees-

o what is the language of the flowers and leaves?

are they one and the same or different?

o how i wish to speak their noiseless language!

today i could venture out into the open even at 4 p.m.

with no risk of burning my soles and skin;

today my dance is not on flames but on flowers-

the sky has bid adieu to the sweating sun of june;

at last i find the sun of the moon or the moon of the sun

high above on the western skies, harmless and half-sleepy;

the nature today has painted everything in mild colours,

drawing hearts out into the open to the bliss of the seasons!

where else in the universe except on this lovely earth

could i get this solemn bliss from the elements of nature?

i will be born again and again on this beautiful earth.

Around & Around

Well the joint was jumpin, going round and round,
Hey! realin and a rockin, what a crazy sound,
Well they never stopped rockin till the moon went down.
Well it sounds so sweet I had to take me a chance,
I rose out of me seat lord, I had to dance,
Started moving my feet, well a clapping my hands.
Well I kept on dancin, going round and round,
Hey! reelin and a rockin, what a crazy sound,
Well they never stopped rockin till the moon went down.
Well at twelve oclock lord, the place was packed,
The front doors was locked lord, the place was packed,
When the police knocked, those doors they flew back.
Well I kept on dancin, going round and round,
Hey! realin and a rockin, what a crazy sound,
Well they never stopped rockin till the moon went down.

Feast or Famine

Neither feast nor famine
should show its fickle face.
The wine for some
and for most just a trace.
A few bitter drops of bitter liquid
lapped up by their thirst
and why?
Because others must come first?

And who decides this unfair thing?
Must not be the one whose praises we sing.
And who shall stop this unfair thing?
Must not be any that call themselves King.

Neither feast nor famine
should ever be allowed.
And those that feast should hunger
and feed the starving crowd.

When The River Cries

The river cries! The river cries! the river cries!
Dastardly, dastardly, dastardly crimes
'gainst humanity in society, down corridor of time
Barons, tycoons, slave owners, tyrants gourge, gourge
Plunder, plunder, plunder for more, more
Millions, millions, millions, men, women
Boys, girls, babies, pine die
When the river cries.
Wars, disease, hunger, famine, hordes of flies
Malaria, cholera, dysentery, sunken eyes
Behold, behold, behold, you skeletals, skeletals
What travesty, what barbarity, what monstrosity
Down, down, down in economic valley
Give me milk, give me milk, give me milk
When the river cries.

The Cat And The Moon

THE cat went here and there
And the moon spun round like a top,
And the nearest kin of the moon,
The creeping cat, looked up.
Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,
For, wander and wail as he would,
The pure cold light in the sky
Troubled his animal blood.
Minnaloushe runs in the grass
Lifting his delicate feet.
Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?
When two close kindred meet.
What better than call a dance?
Maybe the moon may learn,
Tired of that courtly fashion,
A new dance turn.
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
From moonlit place to place,
The sacred moon overhead
Has taken a new phase.
Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils
Will pass from change to change,
And that from round to crescent,
From crescent to round they range?
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
Alone, important and wise,
And lifts to the changing moon
His changing eyes.

Sister Cat

Cat stands at the fridge,
Cries loudly for milk.
But I've filled her bowl.
Wild cat, I say, Sister,
Look, you have milk.
I clink my fingernail
Against the rim. Milk.
With down and liver,
A word I know she hears.
Her sad miaow. She runs
To me. She dips
In her whiskers but
Doesn't drink. As sometimes
I want the light on
When it is on. Or when
I saw the woman walking
toward my house and
I thought there's Frances.
Then looked in the car mirror
To be sure. She stalks
The room. She wants. Milk
Beyond milk. World beyond
This one, she cries.

Lover's Gifts XXII: I Shall Gladly Suffer

I shall gladly suffer the pride of culture to die out in my house,
if only in some happy future I am born a herd-boy in the Brinda
forest.
The herd-boy who grazes his cattle sitting under the banyan
tree, and idly weaves gunja flowers into garlands, who loves to
splash and plunge in the Jamuna's cool deep stream.
He calls his companions to wake up when morning dawns, and all
the houses in the lane hum with the sound of the churn, clouds of
dust are raised by the cattle, the maidens come out in the
courtyard to milk the king.
As the shadows deepen under the tomal trees, and the dusk
gathers on the river-banks; when the milkmaids, while crossing the
turbulent water, tremble with fear; and loud peacocks, with tails
outspread, dance in the forest, he watchers the summer clouds.
When the April night is sweet as a fresh-blown flower, he
disappears in the forest with a peacock's plume in his hair; the
swing ropes are twined with flowers on the branches; the south wind
throbs with music, and the merry shepherd boys crowd on the banks
of the blue river.
No, I will never be the leader, brothers, of this new age of
new Bengal; I shall not trouble to light the lamp of culture for
the benighted. If only I could be born, under the shady asoka
groves, in some village of Brinda, where milk is churned by the
maidens!

Into the rythym let the fire burn
So get into it-- get into the trance

Who moved to the rhythm just the way they liked
You hear the treble, you hear the bass

The Sidewinder Sleep Tonight

This here is the place I will be staying.
There isn't a number. You can call the pay phone.
Let it ring a long, long, long, long time.
If I don't pick up, hang up, call back, let it ring some more.
If I don't pick up, pick up... The sidewinder sleeps, sleeps, sleeps in a coil
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
There are scratches all around the coin slot
like a heartbeat, baby trying to wake up,
but this machine can only swallow money.
You can't lay a patch by computer design.
It's just a lot of stupid, stupid signs.
Tell her,
tell her she can kiss my ass, then laugh and say that you were only kidding.
That way she'll know that it's really, really, really, really me.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
Baby, instant soup doesn't really grab me.
Today I need something more sub-sub-sub-substantial.
A can of beans or blackeyed peas, some Nescafe and ice,
a candy bar, a falling star, or a reading of Doctor Seuss;
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
The cat in the hat came back, wrecked a lot of havoc on the way,
always had a smile and a reason to pretend.
But their world has flat backgrounds and little need to sleep but to dream.
The sidewinder sleeps on his back.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
I can always sleep standing up. Call me when you try to wake her.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
I can always sleep standing up. Call me when you try to wake her.
Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
I can always sleep standing up. Call me when you try to wake her.
I can always sleep standing up. Call me when you try to wake her.
