Judith and You and A Morning Mist
The morning mist
that hung over
the pond (or your lake
as Judith called it)
had moved away
by the time she came
and stood next to you
wrapped up in her
Sunday best
waiting until the time
for the bus to take
you both to sing
in the church
her breath flowing out
on the air
like cigarette smoke
her eyes focused
on the skin
of the still water
I dreamt of you
last night
she said
you and I
were snuggled
together in my bed
having made love
you watched
a magpie take flight
over the water
nice
wish I could
have been there
in person
you said
more breath
left her lips
and rose upwards
maybe next time
you can
she said
turning her head
spreading her lips
into a smile
just be my luck
your mother
will invade the dream
and catch us
you said
yes
Judith said
that would
spoil the dream
some what
there was a mist
over the pond earlier
you said
it looked beautiful
she turned
and stared
over the water
I missed that
as you missed
making love to me
in my dream
she whispered
drawing closer
her hands
taking hold
of yours
what did you
dream about?
she asked
an empty bed
and cold sheets
and a space
where you should
have been
you said
she smiled
and said
I couldn't be
in both beds
at once could I?
once more
there was the rising
of her breath
you couldn't tell her
you'd seen
an image
of her death.

Will One Day Go.
Sorry about
your granddad's death
Judith said
as you stood
beside her
by the pond
at the back
of the house
in the woods
the autumn sun
lighting up patches
of the water's skin
it was sudden
you said
my uncle told me
she took
your hand
in hers
and squeezed
her soft skin
on yours
her thumb
rubbing
the back
of your hand
best remember him
as he was
she said
living and smiling
not some place
lying dead
you nodded
trying
to conjure up
when you'd
seen him last
sitting in
the back garden
of his house
months earlier
talking
of his flowers
he'd grown
from seed
his white hair
moved slightly
by the breeze
he liked my new suit
you said
thought it looked smart
she kissed your cheek
and said
hold on
to things
like that
your memories
place them
in a drawer
inside your head
a jackdaw flew
across the skin
of the pond
the black and white
of wings and tail
reflected
in the water
below
what comes
from God
she whispered
whether
nature's beauty
or ones
we love
will one day
sadly go.

Broken
Every night before I rest my head
Hold me close as I draw another breath
Still hoping, that our love's not broken
Every flight that we plan ahead
Look to the skies for the words that I've said
Still hoping, that our world's not broken
So tonight, you're everything upon the screen
And everything I want to be
I'll come with you and dream my dream
So tonight, in every way I want you to stay
And every little word you say - oh
Every morning when I wait for you
Each way I look you'll see something new
Still hoping, that my world's not broken
Every time I dream crazy dreams
Of bright water and brightless sunbeams
I'm hoping, that my mind's not broken
So tonight, you're everything upon the screen
And everything I want to be
I'll come with you and dream my dream
So tonight, in every way I want you to stay
And every little word you say - oh

So tonight, you're everything upon the screen
And everything I want to be

So tonight, in every way I want you to stay

The First Dream
The Wind is ghosting around the house tonight
and as I lean against the door of sleep
I begin to think about the first person to dream,
how quiet he must have seemed the next morning
as the others stood around the fire
draped in the skins of animals
talking to each other only in vowels,
for this was long before the invention of consonants.
He might have gone off by himself to sit
on a rock and look into the mist of a lake
as he tried to tell himself what had happened,
how he had gone somewhere without going,
how he had put his arms around the neck
of a beast that the others could touch
only after they had killed it with stones,
how he felt its breath on his bare neck.
Then again, the first dream could have come
to a woman, though she would behave,
I suppose, much the same way,
moving off by herself to be alone near water,
except that the curve of her young shoulders
and the tilt of her downcast head
would make her appear to be terribly alone,
and if you were there to notice this,
you might have gone down as the first person
to ever fall in love with the sadness of another.

Misty Morning, Albert Bridge
I dreamt we were standing
By the banks of the thames
Where the cold grey waters ripple
In the misty morning light
Held a match to your cigarette
Watched the smoke curl in the mist
Your eyes, blue as the ocean between us
Smiling at me
I awoke alone and lonely
In a faraway place
The sun fell cold upon my face
The cracks in the ceiling spelt hell
Turned to the wall
Pulled the sheets around my head
Tried to sleep, and dream my way
Back to you again
Count the days
Slowly passing by
Step on a plane
And fly away
Ill see you then
As the dawnbirds sing
On a cold and misty morning
By the albert bridge

Bananas And Cream
(Kinky Friedman)
Well, a long time ago in old Tokyo
By the softly flowing stream
I left her there with the stars in her hair
On the other side of a dream.
Well, I traveled through with a heart full of blue
Never quite making my way
Till I come upon a strawberry blonde
Living in Pittsburgh, P.A.
Ah, bananas and rice they used to be nice
On the other side of a dream.
Oh, bananas and rice they used to be nice
But now it's bananas an cream.
I stood hypnotized, I stared in her eyes,
She smiled and I suddenly knew
If I made her my bride then the other side
0f my dream would finally come true.
Ah, bananas and rice they used to be nice
On the other side of a dream.
Oh, oh, bananas and rice they used to be nice

To
The Day was dying; his breath
Wavered away in a hectic gleam;
And I said, if Life's a dream, and Death
And Love and all are dreams -- I'll dream.
A mist came over the bay
Like as a dream would over an eye.
The mist was white and the dream was grey
And both contained a human cry,
The burthen whereof was "Love",
And it filled both mist and dream with pain,
And the hills below and the skies above
Were touched and uttered it back again.
The mist broke: down the rift
A kind ray shot from a holy star.
Then my dream did waver and break and lift --
Through it, O Love, shone thy face, afar.
So Boyhood sets: comes Youth,
A painful night of mists and dreams;
That broods till Love's exquisite truth,
The star of a morn-clear manhood, beams.

Water so Deep and Profound
Water so sinuous and devious,
And as mystifying as you.
Water is always hiding its true self,
Never in one form.
Water can be the shimmer,
Reflecting off the light of the pond,
Making the pond seem magnificent.
Water can be the rushing sound,
As it escapes the secretive pond,
And runes down into the vast ocean,
Seeking adventure and unfound dreams.
Water can be the feeling of calmness,
As it sits there, overlooking the pond,
With wonder and seeing how it made it what it is.
Water so supple and wondrous,
The pond is born from the water.
Water so deep and profound,
Just like you,
The pond so incomplete without water,
Just like your family.

All I Have To Do Is Dream
Dream, dream dream dream, dream, dream dream dream
When I want you in my arms,
When I want you and all your charms
Whenever I want you, all I have to do, is
Dream, dream dream dream
When I feel blue in the night,
And I need you to hold me tight
Whenever I want you, all I have to do, is
Dream, dream dream dream
I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine,
Any time, night or day
Only trouble is, gee wiz,
Im dreamin my life away
I need you so that I could die,
I love you so, and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do, is
Dream, dream dream dream, dream
I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine,
Any time, night or day
Only trouble is, gee wiz, i

I need you so that I could die,

It’s when I sleep
It’s when I sleep
I dream of you
I dream of your eyes
I dream of your smile
I dream of you here with me!
He’s not here for me
I’m tired for being everything
Sleep, you are my bosom buddy
Love stolen my calm!
I dream of your whisper
I feel you in my breath
Your breath softly upon my face:
It made me alive
Sleeps prevail on me:
One day you wish me to be!

But She Knew
But I know
she said
that you love me
and you were sitting
by the pond
you with that cheap fishing rod
which caught nothing
and she sitting there
her hands over her knees
gazing at the still surface
even if you don’t
say it often
she added
laying her chin
on her knees
her green skirt
just above her knees
and you caught
a glimpse of her thighs
where the skirt rose up
I do you love
you said
holding the rod
between hands
it’s just I don’t see the need
to keep on saying it
you added
stretching your eyes
to go as far
as they could
to get a better look
and she said
why do you come here
to fish when you catch
nothing except a cold
in the neck
and stiff joints
and do you want a smoke?
She pulled out
a pack of cigarettes
and you let a hand free
from the rod
and took one
and she put one
between her lips
and lit it with a pink
plastic lighter
then lit yours
and you both
inhaled and exhaled
the smoke rising
over the pond
seeming to sit there
in the still air
and she said
between drags
I do know you love me
I can feel it
in my bones
and in my tingling
flesh at night
as I lay abed
and you thought
of that image
knowing her mother
would be about
the house
with her stern features
and sharp tongue
and beady eyes
but the image was good
you thought
sitting there beside her
in silence
with the drifting smoke
over the pond
and her hand
touching you
and the sky
turning from
dull grey
to a soft blue.

Love Unabated
everyday inside your room you worship a face
like a god
you close your eyes and dream of that kiss
of that love
that makes you love the pillow that makes you
hug the warm embraces of the blanket on your bed
at noon you see the face you love and you wish you can hold
your hands to hold his lips and plunge in there like it is a pond of water
you dream on that broad daylight making love where others are too busy
making life to live
you refuse to see the stain of this error
wandering like a woman in the forest land beside the tiger
you do not have any sense of death at all
on this love prohibited by the rules
on this love that destroys your soul
on this love that leads to the perdition of who you are
time. leaves. dusts. faded sounds. pastel blue colors of the hours.
the rivers overflowed.
you are drowning in this crazy flow of love unabated.
it is wrong, the windows keep telling you as you stare on the ground floor.
and then you jumped. and they shall hear nothing.

Don't Know When
Don’t know when
she said
but as she spoke
her breath rose
like cigarette smoke
in the morning air
and it fascinated you
more than the words
like when your father
blew smoke rings for you
as some kind
of cheap entertainment
but
she said
it will happen
I promise you
and your lack
of response
still gazing
at her breath rising
made her repeat
don’t know when though
and jabbed
at your chest
with her finger
oh ok
you said
coming back
to the moment
her blue eyes
fixed on you
the depth of them
like pools
of blue water
and oh how
to drown there
the thought arose
wanting the when
to be
as soon as
and the image
of her back then
with her eyes
and smile
and that way
she had
of bringing life
to a dull day
like some
top notch dancer
not knowing then
of her death
years later
of cold creeping cancer.

Suffocation
Last night I had the weirdest dream
I dreamt that I was lying in bed
With this girl whose hair was
As black as the night and as
Thick as a forest,
And her hair, her hair was
Smothering me
Or at least, I thought it was
Her hair,
Until I noticed it was her hands
Running over my face,
My lips
My eyes
My cheeks.
As hot as the desert
And smooth as silk
But pressing down
Pressing me into my pillow
Until I could see nothing
But the pink of her skin
And I thought,
Im gunna die
Those hands are gunna
Kill me
Until I realized really,
It wasn’t hands,
But lips,
Sucking the air from mine
Engulfing my last breath
And drawing it into her being
And I thought, well,
At least lips are
A nice way to go
Until finally I came
To my goddamn senses
And I realized,
I realized it wasn’t her lips
But the words coming
From those sweet lips
That was suffocating me
And it was “I love you”
I was choking on
Not her hair, hands or lips
At all.

I C E D A N C E R
In engaging a walk, on a Winter's crisp morn,
On a snow-feathered path,
Glazed with ice-ladened branches,
Lies a Pond of most striking impression,
Mother Nature's Kiss.
Crystalized Ice in the shape of a Heart,
An ardor of Winter's Majesty.
Subtle breezes stir the Pines,
As I step towards the Mirror-like Pond.
Wafts of Snow leave their landing
And looking up I'm bedaubed,
With a breath-chilling freckling Snowmist.
And the Pond, an image of Celestial capture,
A figuration of amorous grandeur.
Its surface in shades of Silver and Amber;
Kaleidoscopic, from the young Sun in Birth.
A spindrifting Breeze
Snares the cusp of my Nose,
And my eyes close.
The Wind changes course, and am soon alerted
To a clarion Whisper before me.
I open my Eyes with anxious Emotion,
And behold a most Utopic Impression.
'Tis a Maiden donned softly in White Linen gown
Kneeling, poised, at the edge of the Pond.
Lacing gold bladed skates, clad with Pearl-studded Leather,
Reflecting its Beauty, towards the new Rising Sun,
And nodding her head, she has acknowledged my awed presence.
I respond with a Shy, Boyish grin.
Then a curling, sweet Smile adorns her Lips
As she engages the ice, and begins her dance.
Swirling, encircling, indulged in her Whimsy, each Movement
A freeze-frame of Grace...
My Breath far behind me, as she raises her arms,
And with her Eyes, she beckons me closer.
Sweat on my temples, Sun gaining strength...
I haven't much Time, for Daybreak has sprung.
Mother Nature no Friend now, to my Lady in waiting;
I must counter and lay her to Shade.
I stumble to the Pond, but alas, I descry,
As all's left be an Oval of crisp, muddled water,
A Teardrop, as I watch in open Sorrow,
And the Wonder if my Lady had escaped her Eclipse,
And the Soulburning Hope, that this not be a dream.
So I'll sit by this Pond, wait for night's frosted stage,
And my Icedancer's Encore.........

My Dream
I had this dream
I was walking with this woman
We were on the beach
The water was cool on our feet
The sun was bright and hot
She was beautiful in so many ways
Her smile warmed me inside
I knew her, but I didn't
She held my hand tightly as we walked
I asked her who she was
She just looked at me and smiled
It was then I opened my eyes
It was then I realized
I was living the dream
This was no dream
I was with her and she was with me

5 O'clock Dream
You came
At the 5 o’clock dream
Sat with me for sometime
Touched once with your lips
Left a wet imprint
It was still there when I woke up!
I asked, “Can’t we meet once more,
Just once? ”
You moved your head
A smile passed your face,
I couldn’t decipher,
“I’m always there,
And you always think of me,
Always, not just once”.
My eyes were wet
When the world woke me up
From the 5 o’clock dream!

Judith Delivers The Israelites
(after Eugene Lee-hamilton)
Holofernes welcomed Judith in his tent
with in his eyes a kind of lustful gleam,
somewhat as if in a incoherent dream,
smiling, unarmored as if his power was spent.
Drunkenly he pushed her down and over her he bent,
a jewel on her scimitar had an ominous red gleam
as powerfully she beheaded him, made his blood stream,
heard his guards laugh in the tent adjacent
while she drew in her own breath
and in his heart there might have been a kind of love,
but away from the opening she did his body drag,
smiled after she had put him to death
and she believed her mission did come from above,
as she did put his head in a leather bag.
