Down On Longboat Key
She sits and stares out the window at the water
Every night down at ....Cafe'
All alone she sips her pina colada
Talking to herself, dreaming time away
The story is that a dark haired stranger
Stole her heart many years ago
He promised her he'd come back and take her
Around the world, bring her hills of gold
Chorus:
Down on Longboat Key
Where the island sand meet the Gulf Stream Bridge
Down on Longboat Key
She spends her life in a dream
On Longboat Key
Down on Longboat Key
Down on Longboat Key.
Each afternoon as the snugboats come in
She runs to meet them down at the pier
She sees the fishermen, the nets and the sunset
But she don't see him, her eyes fill with tears
She stands there looking at the crystal blue water
And in the coral she imagines pearls
She makes believe he brought them all the way from China
Then the water swirls
The blue-green water swirls
Chorus:
Down on Longboat Key
Where the island sand meet the Gulf Stream breeze
Down on Longboat Key
She spends her life in a dream
On Longboat Key
Down on Longboat Key
Down on Longboat Key.
Young sailors make a play to take her home
She says 'No, I'm already taken'
Oh, they just laugh when she mentions his name
She just keeps on waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting
Chorus:
Down on Longboat Key
Where the island sand meet the Gulf Stream breeze
Down on Longboat Key
She spends her life in a dream
On Longboat Key
Down on Longboat Key
Down on Longboat Key.

Crab Island Light
The sea beats in at the headland spur
Then rounds Crab Island Reef,
The rip is a grey and swirling dearth
That will drag you underneath,
Then it hums and moans as it rounds the reef
And it howls in a winter storm,
'Til it beats up hard on the inland beach
Where the Light still stands, forlorn.
I kept that Light in my younger days
With my wife, sweet Mary Anne,
She swept and cleaned while I kept the glass
Of those mirrors spic and span,
I cleaned and polished them well by day
And tended the Light by night,
To warn seafarers of reef and rocks
With the beam of the Island Light.
But evenings, then, we'd lock the doors
And we'd climb up, out of reach
For the crabs would swarm by their thousands then
From the reef, on the inland beach,
They covered the beach like a devil's plague
And scavenged for carrion flesh,
So we stayed inside to the skittering sound
Of the crabs, attacking the mesh.
My Mary Anne had a brother then
Who took to the sea in ships,
He'd often pass by the Light, and then
Would visit us, bearing gifts.
He brought joss sticks of sandalwood,
Of Jasmine, Amber and Musk,
His gifts of pearls and ointments, brought
In a longboat, nearing dusk.
He'd stay the night, and tell us then
Of treasures he'd seen on board,
Of perfumes, gold medallions,
Of silver, an endless hoard.
We joked about smugglers long ago
Who'd lured ships onto the rocks,
Then killed the crews as they crawled ashore
And carried the cargoes off.
Young Martin, he was a friendly lad,
And he loved his sister well,
While she adored, and she spoiled him too
For the tales that he had to tell,
But I - I sat by the sweeping Light
And I thought of the wealth of men,
While I slaved long for a pittance there
To care for my Mary Anne.
His ship was known as the 'Frankfort Rose',
An old three masted Barque,
One of the last of the sailing ships,
As old as the 'Cutty Sark'.
I knew her movements from year to month,
From week to day to hour,
And when she passed by the Island Light
I'd have her in my power.
Winter came, and the gales they blew,
And the sea raged round my door,
The 'Frankfort Rose' was heading back,
With a fortune from Singapore,
I left my wife to her knitting then
And I climbed back up to the Light,
But I struck the flame and the dark came down
Black pitch in the dead of night.
Then dimly out through the blackness there
And over beyond the rocks,
I saw the lights of the 'Frankfort Rose'
As she dipped and turned, quite lost.
I heard the crunch of her timbers then
And screams from her frantic crew,
As the ship went down by the battered stern
And the sails were rent in two.
The sound of splintering timbers echoed
Over the driving gale,
My Mary Anne came running up,
'My God - but the Light has failed! '
I tried to soothe and to calm her down
But she screamed in pain and rage:
'My brother's out in that storm tonight,
He's gone to a watery grave! '
She ran back down and I sparked the Light,
Too late, but now I knew,
That I'd be blamed for the wreck that night…
I'd say: 'The Light just blew! '
I raced below on the spiral stair
But Mary Anne had gone,
She'd taken the longboat, pushed it out
To battle the raging storm.
The blood just drained from my face, I leapt
Across to the open door,
The storm had whipped up the swell, white caps,
The boat was far from the shore,
I watched her battling monster waves,
And screaming Martin's name,
But then the bodies were swept ashore…
And I was the one to blame!
I crept inside and I locked the door,
Then cowered in the dark,
All thoughts of cargo and wealth were gone,
I wished I could take it back;
But nothing could save the souls out there,
They'd all be drowned, to a man,
I should have searched for my only love,
But I thought I'd seen her drown.
The early light brought me out once more
To the ravaged, lonely beach,
The cargo lay all about, it seemed,
But out of my mental reach;
The bodies lay, and I saw her dress
As it moved - I thought it a dream…
Then the crabs poured out, and I seemed to hear
My voice, as it rose to scream.

Dutchman's Call
They had seized the only longboat
When the 'Gelderland' veered round,
As the flames leapt the topgallant,
And then brought the rigging down,
There was panic on the foredeck,
There was panic at the bridge,
When the Royal Charles raked salvoes
She began to roll and pitch.
While the shrapnel from the cannons
Shrieked and tore good men apart,
There were those not so heroic
Who were thinking to desert,
They were Dutch from West Terschelling
Who had never learnt to shoot,
Until the English came to call
On Hans, and Jan de Groot.
They'd left not empty-handed for
The cook, Hans Vandeveer
Had already made provision
For them sailing, free and clear,
With a gallon cask of Advocaat,
Another one of rum,
He called the gunner, Jan de Groot
And said - 'Ve vill be gone! '
They launched the heavy longboat
In the mighty, storm-tossed bay
While the 'Gelderland' went down
With every hand aboard that day,
And they set the only sail to take
Them home to Terschelling,
But Robert Holmes had got there as
The storm was lessening.
The fire ships were many, and
They spread their flames about,
One hundred thirty merchantmen
Went down, without a shout,
The English sacked the little town
The island they called home,
While fleeing, they rowed out to sea
With nowhere left to roam.
The town they'd always called naar huis
Was burning to the ground,
They watched the hated Engelsman
And said: 'Ve'll do zem down! '
They watched their houses burning
As they drifted from the shore,
And pledged 'Ve'll haf our Dutch ravanche
If nuzzing else, I swore! '
For days they drifted aimlessly
Just praying for respite,
When on the second evening
They saw a warning light.
They thought it might be France ahead,
The coast, it could be Spain's,
The morning saw them rowing up
The sluggish River Thames.
The mighty docks and warehouses
Were all deserted then,
The plague had taken everyone,
Or laid them in the ground,
'Vair is ze people? ' said de Groot,
'Zis silence iss bizar....'
Hans Vandeveer just shook his head,
And swigged the Advocaat.
They tied the boat up to a wharf
And then set out on foot,
They roamed the empty, dirty streets,
'Iz not Spain! ' said de Groot;
'Iz not Spain - it iz London! ' said
Hans Vandeveer, 'Look zat! '
For there was stately London bridge,
He hid beneath his hat.
'Zo! London... of ze Engelsman, '
He took a swig of rum,
They both began to chuckle then,
Well zen, let uss haf fun!
They came upon a house that bore
A huge red painted cross,
With 'Please have Mercy on us Lord'
'Vot sez zat? ' Jan looked lost.
They neither of them read a word
Of English or of Dutch,
They'd gone to sea as children, so
Their learning wasn't much,
They beat upon the wooden door,
And heard some cries within,
So thinking there was murder there,
They kicked the old door in.
Two women and a man were there,
A pretty sorry sight,
Dead drunk, dishevelled, tangled hair,
They looked at them in fright,
'Ve come to mak you be all right, '
Said Hans, confused and red,
He offered them the Advocaat,
They gave him gin instead.
'I'm Lady Bubo, ' said the one,
With bright red flaming hair,
And I am Mrs. Onic, ' laughed
The other, who was fair,
The man, who lay flat on his back,
Then raised his head, and swore,
'I'm known as Jack the Rat, my friends,
Bubonic is my whore! '
They laughed and fell about the room
Embracing Jan de Groot,
Who swigged his rum, Hans Vandeveer
Just shrugged, and followed suit,
They hadn't had a woman then
Since back in Terschelling,
But: 'Be my guest, ' said Jack the Rat,
There was no second telling.
The revelry went on all night,
They drank and fell about,
'We want some food, ' said Onic then,
The larder's all cleaned out,
They finally, by making signs
Got Jan to understand,
'Ve go and find zum vittals, zen
Ve come back ven ve can! '
They headed up to Pudding Lane,
A baker's light shone bright,
The smell of new baked bread hung there
So tempting in the night,
They beat and beat upon the door
But no one answered then,
So Hans, he clambered up a pipe
To find the baker's oven.
The coals spilled out, he seized four loaves,
Then turned and ran downstairs,
He jumped out through a window,
Said: 'Ve'd better mak uz scarce! '
They ran the length of Pudding lane
Before they turned about,
To see the smoke, the roaring flames
Burst out the Baker's house.
The rest is history, my friends,
The fire spread more and more,
And London burned to ashes like
Terschelling had before,
The Dutchmen found their friends were dead,
And they would not get home,
For soon they found that tell-tale sign,
The swelling in the groin.

The River
In my first sleep
I came to the river
And looked down
Through the clear water -
Only in dream
Water so pure,
Laced and undulant
Lines of flow
On its rocky bed
Water of life
Streaming for ever.
A house was there
Beside the river
And I, arrived,
An expected guest
About to explore
Old gardens and libraries -
But the car was waiting
To drive me away.
One last look
Into that bright stream -
Trout there were
And clear on the bottom
Monster form
Of the great crayfish
That crawls to the moon.
On its rocky bed
Living water
In whorls and ripples
Flowing unbended.
There was the car
To drive me away.
We crossed the river
Of living water -
I might not stay,
But must return
By the road too short
To the waiting day.
In my second dream
Pure I was and free
By the rapid stream,
My crystal house the sky,
The pure crystalline sky.
Into the stream I flung
A bottle of clear glass
That twirled and tossed and spun
In the water's race
Flashing the morning sun.
Down that swift river
I saw it borne away,
My empty crystal form,
Exultant saw it caught
Into the current's spin,
The flashing water's run.

Deserted Island
This island is deserted
It is very hot
like the desert
with tons of sand
only theres trees
the trees sway in the breeze
like a cool wind blowing through the village
the water matches the sky here
It's clear blue
you can see everything right down to the sand
under the forever going ocean
there's coral and bright colored fish
it's as warm as
the hot sand under my feet and the summer sun
the isolation is unbelievable
it is unspeakable
the only movement is of the ocean and the trees
there is only me
this island is deserted

You Be The Dam, I'll Be The Water
Seems as long as I've been knowing you
Something has bound us kept us as two
You for me and me for you tried and true
But what we need now is anchor and chain
I get the feelin' we're drifting away
Clouds collecting on horizon again
Oh o oh it looks like rain baby
Chorus:
You be the dam , I'll be the water
Hold back the tide
Just a little bit longer
We gotta make a stand
Gotta get stronger
Pullin' at you
Tuggin' at me baby
You be the dam, I'll be the water
Woke up floatin' like a dove on the gulf stream
Makin' love in the afternoon can ease any pain
We find the deepest part of our hearts
What good are we right now if we don't even try
Wrap it up pack it in say our sweet goodbye
Whatcha gonna do pretty baby when the well runs dry
Woh o oh we'll pray for rain baby
Chorus:
One heart beat at a time
After stormy weather
The sun's gonna shine
Gonna keep our lovin' alive
We can survive baby
Chorus:
You be the dam, I'll be the water
You be the dam, I'll be the water

Driff me off
yield with full of awesome memory,
languish in the option of time, of where I
settle my complete hope of surrender to
the wave of the sky, I command to lie
down my hand
put off the flower that floats and come
to the magic of the stream, the waiting is
gone as the captive dream cease no one
in the sun
pour out all the water spells, the drifted
echo, lives in the air, listen my blooming
dear your escape is only in dream, for
your sweet touch may be gone; as the
water goes through the stream and the
wind may come the same, the pain may
always live to win
go crystal water, as the drifted sky comes
to end and let the passing tears leaves in
the air.......

Unwed Fathers
In an appalachian, greyhound station
She sits there waiting, in a family way
Goodbye brother, tell mom I love her
Tell all the others, Ill write someday
Chorus:
From an teenage lover, to an unwed mother
Kept undercover, like some bad dream
While unwed fathers, they cant be bothered
They run like water, through a mountain stream
In a cold and gray town, a nurse says lay down
this aint no playground, and this aint home
Someones children, out having children
In a gray stone building, all alone
On somewhere else bound, smokey mountain greyhound
She bows her head down, hummin lullabies
your daddy never, meant to hurt you ever
he just dont live here, but youve got his eyes
Repeat chorus:
Well, they run like water,
Through a mountain stream

Find Me at the Edge
You will find me at the edge
Of the water
Where the sand and deep
Ocean meet
Here they collide
But never subside
And so goes their life
For all eternity
And the sky watches in awe
Jealous of the way the ocean
Can move about
But the ocean looks up
At the beautiful sky
And is grateful for
The sight it provides
Though now paralyzed
I close my eyes
And beg for hope
Here in the midst of vast skies
I dream of life
Here in my dreams so diverse
I lie to myself
So far away
I escape this day
And all my thoughts I lay
Here on the ground
That these stars shine upon
In a time where it mattered
When the stars came alive
And the moon shone bright
With the chorus of galaxies
Backing them up
Now they’re betrayed
As this sky starts to fade
And so they are paid
What they never deserved
All this I know
Come rescue me
While my thoughts are still free
And all I can see
Is this sky
That comes to life
Through sorrow and strife
Though sharp as a knife
I am comforted
You will find me at the edge
Of the water
Where the sand and deep
Ocean meet
Here I will be

Working Metaphore
Work is like an island in an ocean of time
Landing on this shore felt like paradise
But the island is small and quickly grows boring
I am standing in the water, looking out as I work
Time passes in portions of half an hour
Wave upon wave of life slipping down the tide-line
I am deciding whether to let go and wash away with it
Or hold on and climb the beach again
How many islands are in this ocean?
I gaze out and see a few just waiting for me
Can I swim to them, will they take me?
In the water between them, is there love lurking?
Changes are on the horizon, as a tsunami
Rolling towards this island invisibly, towards me
None of the islands will survive it, I fear
Or maybe only I will be washed away into oblivion
Tick, splash, tick, splash, wave upon wave of half hours
Carrying me just a little further from the dry sand
Behind me, the managers are calling from the trees
I hesitate for a moment, and let the waves wash over me
Only a few more, and I can swim for a while,
I might ride the changes to a far away place if I'm swimming
In the water I can meet another, to drown my regrets of the last
The waves wash over me, and I wait for the tide to swim

Forever Begins
VERSE 1
Her eyes they glisten in the sun
As she watches the day become night
As the dark draws in
And then she takes a flute and plays a song
Melodies from days that have gone by
BRIDGE
And as she looks in the water
He's smiling back at her
And in her heart she knows
The time is close
For her soul to move on from this Earth
CHORUS
It's been a long time waiting
To see his face and
To feel his love again
No more crying
Soon you'll be flying
To a place where forever begins
Flying to forever, forever
To a place where forever begins
VERSE 2
She remembers a time when he was there
They were blissfully unaware
That their time was near
For the man that she loved was to go away
He'd been called to a better place
Far away from here
BRIDGE
And as she looks in the water
He's smiling back at her
And in her heart she knows
Her eyes they show
The dreams of the way things once were
CHORUS
It's been a long time waiting
To see his face and
To feel his love again
No more crying
Soon you'll be flying
To a place where forever begins
MIDDLE 8
Two lovers, they can meet again on the other side
She feels no pain, she's strong again where the angels fly
BRIDGE
And as she looks in the water
He's smiling back at her
And in her heart she knows
Her eyes they show
The dreams of the way things once were
CHORUS
It's been a long time waiting
To see his face and
To feel his love again
No more crying
Soon you'll be flying
To a place where forever begins
It's been a long time waiting
To see his face and
To feel his love again
No more crying
Soon you'll be flying
To a place where forever begins

Island In The Sand
You are walking across the desert,
under a hot blazing sun;
you eyes search the horizon
for an oasis somewhere.
Places of palm trees,
and a pool of cool water there,
a little island in the sand.
Finally you see something,
you run headlong towards it,
dive into the cool water.
This is what you think you see,
but you end up bathing in the hot sand,
it is only a mirage you see.
Love can also be,
very much like that,
island in the sand.
Once you get close,
it may also disappear.

A Sailors Christas
(jimmy buffett, roger guth)
A sail on the horizons got a land fall rendezvous
The captain steers a well known course he steers her straight and true
As he trims the sheets he sings a song he learned on boats and bars
A sailor spends his christmas in a harbour neath the stars
Hes traveled through the doldrums, typhoons and hurricanes
Hes logged a million soggy miles, with water on his brain
But christmas is the season better suited for dry land
Hell tell some lies, meet some spies and dance barefoot in the sand
Chorus:
A sailor spends his christmas in a harbour on the hook
Cali, calais no work today, lets shelve the old log book
The waterfront is reveling, the season has begun
A sailor spends his christmas in a harbour having fun.
Theres a party down at le select all music, rhum and cheers
Faces in the shadows, I havent seen for years
The masts and shrouds are filled with lights neath the waning of the moon
Theres an air of celebration in the realm of king neptune.
Chorus:
Instrumental bridge
Jesus was a fisherman who walked upon the sea
The north pole is the oceans remote frozen balcony
The continents keep drifting but the children sing and play
Cause nothing really matters after all its christmas day

I'll Be Waiting
Can't you see
You mean everything to me
You're in my heart
You've touched my soul
You're all I'll ever need
And it hurts so bad
Not to have you by my side
Nothing's right; I cry all night
Just waiting for your call
[CHORUS]
I'll be waiting for you till the sun don't shine
I will wish on a star to make you mine
I'll be dreaming all night that you're by my side
I'll be waiting for you
Said I'll be waiting for you till the end of time
Can't you see that I need you in my life
You're all that I want; I can't deny
I'll be waiting for you
(I'll be waiting for you...)
Love is hard
When the days can seem so far
We were both inseparable
And now we're torn apart
I refuse to try again
To love to someone new
Cuz what we shared was heavenly
Like a rose that's in full bloom
[CHORUS]
(I'll be waiting for you...)
You make me so happy
I never thought I'd lose you
You're love was and still is
The only thing I run to
[CHORUS]
Every minute of every hour
You know I'll be waiting for you

Dream Brother
(j. buckley/m. grondahl/m. johnson)
There is a child sleeping near his twin
The pictures go wild in a rush of wind
That dark angel he is shuffling in
Watching over them with his black feather wings unfurled
The love you lost with her skin so fair
Is free with the wind in her butterscotch hair
Her green eyes blew goodbyes
With her head in her hands
And your kiss on the lips of another
Dream brother with your tears scattered round the world.
Don't be like the one who made me so old
Don't be like the one who left behind his name
'cause they're waiting for you like i waited for mine
And nobody ever came...
Don't be like the one who made me so old
Don't be like the one who left behind his name
'cause they're waiting for you like i waited for mine
And nobody ever came...
Don't be like the one who made me so old
Don't be like the one who left behind his name
'cause they're waiting for you like i waited for mine
Nobody ever came
Nobody ever...
I feel afraid and i call your name
I love your voice and your dance insane
I hear your words and i know your pain
With your head in your hands and her kiss on the lips of another
Your eyes to the ground and the world spinning round forever
Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over
Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over
Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over
Ah do you meet the one i love
And smell the one who loves you
Dream brother, dream brother, dream, dream
Dream asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over

Islands
Island in the sea
Are so much like me
They dont ever change--no emotion, no emotion
Islands on the land
Dry like desert sand
Island in the city
All alone its such a pity
Chorus
Its just a masquerade
Just painted laces
When will it change
Never
Islands in the seas
Whats come over me
We are both surrounded by the water--empty water
Give me mystery--and the fear it brings
Anything at all to break up the monotony

Islands in the sea
Forever . . . forever

The Prodigal
I face the day again
Against the window pane.
I remain your closest friend,
And wish you back again.
You wonder how i feel;
You think you've pushed too far.
If only you could see this pen
Scribbling down my heart.
I'll be waiting.
I may be young or old and gray,
Counting the days,
But i'll be waiting,
And when i finally see you come,
I'll run when i see you--
I'll meet you.
But still the days drag on.
Why did you decide to go?
Did you only need to see
What only time can show?
I'll be waiting.
I may be young or old and gray,
Counting the days,
But i'll be waiting,
And when i finally see you come,
I'll run when i see you.
And even if
You never do return,
Still i will have learned
How to love you better.
I'll be waiting.
I may be young or old and gray,
Counting the days,
But i'll be waiting,
And when i finally see you come,
I'll run to meet you.
I'll be waiting.
I may be young or old and gray,
Counting the days,
I'll be waiting,
And when i finally see you come,
I'll run to meet you.

The Hardest Part
Let it fill your heart
And throw it all over
Like a flower
Into the water
Let it fill your heart
Let it blow you all over
When you tumble
Under the water
Whats to come of my life
Dreaming days away
-chorus:
And thats the hardest part
Of it all for you
To live your life
With nothing at all
Chorus
Let me fill your heart
Let me warm you all over
Let me hear your laughter
Run through the water
Let me fill your heart
Let it blossom all over
Like a petal
Burning the water
Ill spend the rest of my life
Walking through the rain

Ill spend the rest of my life
And my waking days

The Gulf Of Mexico
The Texas coastline hold her
Close just like a lady
And in their time they've
Weathered a storm or two.
The river feed her waters like
I feed your memory.
The deeper I go the more I'm turning blue.
The sandy beaches drift in time
And the changing tide I know
Won't bring me back to yesterday
And the Gulf of Mexico.
The sails out on the water will
Come take you away.
When your ship comes in I know its time to go
And the waves along the seawall
Tell me nothings here to stay
And no man is an island but I'm still all alone.
I'm weighing anchors from the past
As the south winds start to blow
Sailing out of yesterday
And the Gulf of Mexico.
I'll be sailing out of yesterday
And the Gulf of Mexico.

A Paumanok Picture
TWO boats with nets lying off the sea-beach, quite still,
Ten fishermen waiting--they discover a thick school of mossbonkers--
they drop the join'd seine-ends in the water,
The boats separate and row off, each on its rounding course to the
beach, enclosing the mossbonkers,
The net is drawn in by a windlass by those who stop ashore,
Some of the fishermen lounge in their boats, others stand ankle-deep
in the water, pois'd on strong legs,
The boats partly drawn up, the water slapping against them,
Strew'd on the sand in heaps and windrows, well out from the water,
the green-back'd spotted mossbonkers.

Islands
Earth, stream and tree encircled by sea
Waves sweep the sand from my island.
My sunsets fade.
Field and glade wait only for rain
Grain after grain love erodes my
High weathered walls which fend off the tide
Cradle the wind
To my island.
Gaunt granite climbs where gulls wheel and glide
Mournfully glide oer my island.
My dawn brides veil, damp and pale,
Dissolves in the sun.
Loves web is spun - cats prowl, mice run
Wreathe snatch-hand briars where owls know my eyes
Violet skies
Touch my island,
Touch me.
Beneath the wind turned wave
Infinite peace
Islands join hands
neathe heavens sea.
Dark harbour quays like fingers of stone
Hungrily reach from my island.
Clutch sailors words - pearls and gourds
Are strewn on my shore.
Equal in love, bound in circles.
Earth, stream and tree return to the sea
Waves sweep sand from my island,
From me.
