23feb10 The Day After: Garden City

many hotels
damaged
shocked guests
evacuated?

Christchurch
mortally wounded
garden mourns

no rooms
for tourists
now to stay

tourists evacuated
troubles fly away
holiday memories

took
an earth shattering
turn

Prayer for many is like a foreign land. When we go there, we go as tourists. Like most tourists, we feel uncomfortable and out of place. Like most tourists, we therefore move on before too long and go somewhere else.

Yawning Or Snarling

One day in El Paso
The cops go into the crowd
Under a glaring bladder of light
And the music is so loud
And the tourists take their T-Shirts off
A busload of kids gives you the finger
Afternoon when the sidewalk's hot
And the shadows too chilly to linger
Walk past damaged goods and ugly trends
Past a strawman making a purchase
Downtown where the river bends
They're just waiting for you to resurface
Take a look at this photograph
Clearly his teeth were bared
He coulda been yawning or snarling
The story was never clear

One night in El Paso
The cops go into the crowd
Under a throbbing bladder of light
And the music is just so loud
And the tourists turn their TV's off
And a bat sees a bug with the sound of a linger
Night time when the shadows cough
And you're chilled to the tips of your fingers
Walk past damaged goods and ugly trends
Past ol' strawman making a purchase
Downtown where the river bends
They're just waiting for you to resurface
Take a look at this photograph
Clearly his teeth were bared
He coulda been yawning or snarling
He coulda been anywhere

God and Michelangelo paint a ceiling

‘And now, ladies and gentlemen,
above you – ladies, it’s easier with
the mirror from your purse…
Monsieur, Signor, Mein Herr…
we’ve come to
The Big Moment…’

the moment for which
tourists gather; temples fill;
saints and monks fall to their knees;
contemplatives fall silent;
even angels hold their breath;
all Creation for a moment, still;

look around, the beauty of it all:
the earth so warm and fresh
under the morning sun;
rivers sparkle among greenest trees
full of breeze and birdsong;
does this perfection lack?

One thing. The one, which may in time
unite all this; destroy all this.

It cannot be the Lord God Himself, seen
walking in the garden in the cool of the evening,
in this paradise which is Himself;
even God must keep His, God’s, own rules;
no, it must be His representative upon His earth,
made in His image - but according to Earth’s scope..

The tourists gawp, or are struck humble
with some unexpected thought. Stay too long like this,
craned neck, and older visitors may faint…

God – who for a moment, must resemble Man
in order to achieve this earthly moment –
stretches out His finger… His reflection,
this mindless, aimless, half-awake and muscle-conscious hulk,
is moved to imitate the action; reflecting,
as do the lady tourists’ hand mirrors
faintly dusted, scented, with face powder;
(a surreptitious dab; it’s hot in here with all the lights..)

But painters, even with God’s aid,
cannot paint a spark like that.

That over-muscled body will soon trim down
when he must chase his breakfast
through the jungle.. life’s not going to be all
milk and honey, manna and ambrosia
from now on..

but how many years and eras in God’s mind
must pass before that hulk, who’s known
as Adam by his madam, evolves
in God’s good time, to ask
‘Who am I, Lord? ’…
the question echoing down the passage of the years
so seldom asked, so silent answered;

the answer when it comes,
comes as by reflection,
comes like a spark to mind.

Pleasant Thoughts

A holiday, a holiday,
a real chance to get away.
To catch a plane, a boat, a train,
or cruise on down the inside lane.
With different views and how-do-you-dos,
and many interesting venues.

A holiday, a holiday.
Having found a place to stay,
enjoy the sights that greet the eyes,
sea, sun and sand with clear blue skies.
All of these things can so make your break,
a time to rest and ruminate.

A holiday, a holiday,
well inland, or out in a bay.
Sail a yacht maybe. Play a spot
of golf. Then if it gets too hot,
rest beside a pool. And to cool down,
take a dip, or turn a glowing brown.

A holiday, a holiday.
Book it right now with no delay.
Choose somewhere you would like to be,
locations for serenity,
siestas out under the stars,
or ones for fun and noise in bars.

A holiday, a holiday.
There’s something that I want to say.
Have a really long super spell,
of relaxation. One can dwell
on pleasant thoughts. Troubles to quell.
Revival of body and mind,
rejuvenating humankind.

Bareipani Waterfall Vavroovahana Patra

Bareipani waterfall looks beautiful;
Mind is delightful.
Second largest waterfall of India In Odisha entices tourists daily;
In Abhayaranya the waterfall lures poets, writers gaudily.

Tourists behold the beauty from a distance;
The wondrous spectacle provides pleasure, appreciate God’s creation desire it is bliss.
Bareipani flows naturally;
Poet enjoys the beauty enthusiastically.

Wondrous waterfall provides pleasure;
Melodious Beauty plays in the lap of Nature.
Beauteous is the high mountain;
Tourist’s mind enthuses beholding the fountain.

Poet beholds the beauty amazingly;
Mind remains in the world of peace gleefully.
Abhayaranya is wondrous;
Allures tourists, with pleasure.

Notes On Sendai

she was once at Sendai
posing by the port with some close friends
the picture shows a very calm blue sea
there were other tourists
faraway on can see seagulls flying
white yachts, green mountains
white shorelines, well kept stores
some children playing
as mothers keep watch closely

we all know what happened to Sendai
the tsunami ate all the houses and the children and the tourists
and temples and farms
there are no more yachts
the birds are few
and the people have left.

The Tourist Plan

‘We have to rule on the Tourist Plan, '
Said Rogan Inchalot,
‘If we haven't come up with an answer soon
Then what have we really got?
The budget's stuck into overdrive
And the costs are going to balloon! '
(The future hung in the balance
On that Saturnday afternoon!)

‘We've always kept it a secret, ' said
The man called Iron Girth,
‘So what do we want with the tourists,
All those imbeciles, from Earth! '
‘We need to collar the dollars, ' said
Minerva Astropine,
‘We're never going to develop, if
We sit around, and whine! '

‘Our secret isn't as safe today,
With all those satellites,
It's becoming an inconvenience
Whenever we douse the lights!
The takings from the Casino drop
The punters stay in the dome,
We need to double our takings, then
Just send the tourists home! '

‘But what if they send their gangsters here,
Their armies, and their guns?
How will we ever defend ourselves,
You know how the story runs!
There's twenty million refugees
I heard a broadcast say,
All spilling over their borders there,
In search of a place to stay! '

‘They'll come out here in their feeble ships,
Break down, and S.O.S.,
While we'll be expected to rescue them…'
‘In their dreams! ' said Gunter Hess.
The meeting called for a show of hands
But was plunged in a sudden gloom,
They've shut the book on the Tourist Plan
For the Dark Side of the Moon!

A Place Of Romantic Mood!

Romantic mood comes whenever we see a park!
One such park is a centre of attraction in our town;
Green lawn all around the park with open space wide
And trees with wide branches giving shade make it
A romantic place for lovers and tourists to enjoy here!
The parks of this kind I have seen in hill stations where
The climate is a plus point for tourists’ attraction there!
Varieties of flowers of different colours and fragrance
And fountains ejecting high up water give thrilling joy!
Blue sky, green grass lawn, fountain waters cooling all
And tall trees of big branches giving shade all over there
Make the park a small paradise for lovers and tourists!
For regaining joyful mood and relaxing in romantic mood
Where can we go for except the park of paradise here?

The Tale Of The Two Tubby Tourists

The Pedicab drivers of Gotham all say
You should ignore a 'Whale Hail'
because it just doesn't pay.
The city is hilly and
to pedal gets tough
when your passengers are,
shall we say, overstuffed.

Two tubby tourists out on the town
between them they weighed about
Eight Hundred Pounds.
They had wiped out the Sushi
at an all you can eat.
Much too lazy to walk
on their overstressed feet.

They hailed for a Pedicab
of which there's a multitude
Thats the sole explanation
for accepting their pulchritude.

Their ride started slowly,
but pleasant enough.
But then came a hill
and the going got rough.

He groaned and he struggled
as he trucked up the road,
but not even juiced Armstrong
could handle this load.

With two tubby tourists
ensconced in the back.
He slowed to a crawl
then stalled in his tracks.

Something had to give
with those two in the rear
The cab then turned turtle
chucking him in the air.

The two tubby tourist
were down on their backs
Their driver unconscious
and two tires flat.

An Ambulance came
and gave him first aide
The two tourists rolled off
and he never got paid.

If we banned too large colas
and sixty ounce beers
could we hope that these
land whales
might, one day, disappear?

Until then its risky
to pick such fares up
unless in a limo
or a truck thats Ram tough

The Island

Early morning, and the first ferry of the day,
Makes its way between the two coasts,
Bringing another boat load of visitors,
To share in the beauty that the Island boasts.

On the Island, there are many types of wildlife.
Many birds feed along the shingle shore.
There are oystercatchers, curlews,
Spoonbills, various types of gull and many more.

Out in the bay, basking in the sun,
Is a colony of seals, resting on the rocks.
It is spectacles like this, which make
This a haven to where tourists love to flock.

Unless you've seen it with your own two eyes,
It's surprising how quickly the mists settle then lift.
From the mainland, the Island is there, then suddenly not.
It's almost like the shape of the land itself totally shifts.

Dotted here and there around the Island,
Are quaint crofter's cottages with thatched roofs.
On the roads, you will often encounter horses,
Trotting steadily along with their clip-clopping hooves.

On the harbour front, is the traditional tea-room,
Where you can buy sandwiches and cream teas.
Further along, is the small, but well stocked, gift shop.
On spying the tourists, they rub their hands with glee.

The George Inn is the only pub in the village.
It's always busy and serves traditional fayre.
They also have several rooms to rent,
And, for a reasonable fee, you can stay there.

There are boat trips around the bay,
And whales and dolphins are often seen.
Diving in and out of the water, they put on a show.
It really is a wildlife lover's ultimate dream.

Much of the Island is a patchwork of fields:
Shades of yellow, gold and every hue of green.
The gentle breeze blows in from across the bay:
The air is crisp and light and very clean.

There is a stately manor house, built of stone,
With beautiful flower beds and manicured lawns.
Bordering its gardens, is a large, dark forest,
Where you can often spot the odd speckled fawn.

A river runs through the valley to the sea,
Where many types of aquatic life can be found.
There's also an old ruin of a castle keep,
Set up high on the top of a grassy mound.

The day draws on and evening falls.
Soon, the darkness starts to creep.
At 9pm, the last ferry leaves the harbour,
And the tourists head home for some sleep.

No Matter What One Achieves

Feelings of being used and damaged,
Never cease.
Successes obtained with a notoriety,
Do not quiet emotions inside...
Of one who has been wounded,
Unnecessarily.
No matter what one achieves.

Physical or mental therapy,
To release those feelings deep.
Are suffered through broken relationships,
One experiencing this battle lived...
Can not seem to have one to keep.
One wishes to have a close bond felt real,
But those memories of abuses...
Haunt and do not leave.

Feelings of being used and damaged,
Never cease.
Successes obtained with a notoriety,
Do not quiet emotions inside...
Of one who has been wounded,
Unnecessarily.
No matter what one achieves.

And the ones that suffer the most are those,
Are the ones loving someone like this...
Who fight their demons,
They can not keep distanced.
