The Encounter

Stretched
on sun-warm carpet,
gazing out on fenced wilderness, she draws furred legs
to furthest extremity; claws extend and retract
as she clenches her
padded fist.

Then
in an instant she's on all fours,
back arched, whiskered mouth grimaced to
horrible grin as she growls and spits
into the gleaming window.

Looking back,
assured by double-pane,
the bird, all feather and fearless eye,
wonders at this new, strange
creature glaring inside.

Rain Keeps Fallin

I remember the night so well.
The rain was fallin but I just couldnt tell,
If it was you that was callin to my love-sick brain.
But the rain kept fallin on my window pane.
Out of the night the thunder rang in my ear.
I cant fight the feelin, lord, that brings forth my fears.
I wish it was over, lord, please stop the rain.
The rain thats fallin on my window pane.
The rain thats fallin on my window pane.
Every night the rains on time, I can feel it in this heart of mine.
But I dont know what to do.
Well, I guess I could go back home, cause you know back home is where I belong.
But it just aint home without you.
And I dont know what to do, baby.
Well, I guess Im a looser but it just dont seem fair.
I lost all my life so tell me, why should I care?
The night that you left me is the night that it came.
And the rains still fallin on my window pane.
The rain keeps fallin on my window pane.
The rain keeps fallin on my window pane.
You know the rain.
The rain keeps fallin on my window pane.
I said the rain.
The rain keeps fallin on my window pane.
You know the rain.
The rain keeps fallin on my window pane.
I said the rain.
The rain keeps fallin on my window pane.
You know the rain ...
The rain keeps fallin on my window pane.
... keeps right on fallin.
The rain keeps fallin on my window pane.
I said, the rain keeps fallin ...

Sound of fire

The animal in you takes shape
and transforms,
the body into animal form.
The teeth extend
out of the mouth.
The fingers cripple
backwards into claws
and the back arches upward.
The beast is formed
and is set free,
to run about
and fly forward
on the ground.
The beast is light
as a feather
and gravity is no more,
and the eyes
focus in shape
to see distances far and wide.

Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?

He sits in your room, his tomb, with a fist full of tacks
Preoccupied with his vengeance
Cursing the dead that cant answer him back
Im sure that he has no intentions
Of looking your way, unless its to say
That he needs you to test his inventions.
Can you please crawl out your window?
Use your arms and legs it wont ruin you
How can you say he will haunt you?
You can go back to him any time you want to.
He looks so truthful, is this how he feels
Trying to peel the moon and expose it
With his businesslike anger and his bloodhounds that kneel
If he needs a third eye he just grows it
He just needs you to talk or to hand him his chalk
Or pick it up after he throws it.
Can you please crawl out your window?
Use your arms and legs it wont ruin you
How can you say he will haunt you?
You can go back to him any time you want to.
Why does he look so righteous while your face is so changed
Are you frightened of the box you keep him in
While his genocide fools and his friends rearrange
Their religion of the little ten women
That backs up their views but your face is so bruised
Come on out the dark is beginning.
Can you please crawl out your window?
Use your arms and legs it wont ruin you
How can you say he will haunt you?
You can go back to him any time you want to.

Robin Suicide

A robin committed suicide today
dead against my living room window pane;
flying fast in chilly mid-November;
perhaps heading south.

The sound; wings blurred; a thump!
he went straight to ground.

He should have missed the house,
it's large, the window is below the roof,
he was not flying blind
or forgot to look.

Like a jet with no flaps down,
he hit the window full-throttle;
smashing pain.

I got up took a look
expecting him to fly or stir
but he didn't move below; lay quiet.

I went down to see.
Robin, older, neck awry
didn't stir, didn't move.
no silent cry.

Neck broken.
Instant Death.
Instant Oblivion,

I looked for mourners.
There were none.

This Robin was solo in Death as we all are;
on his own.

It didn't seem fitting
to conduct a garbage-can burial,
I said a few words, cursed,
and decided to bury him in dirt.

Picked him up by his tail plumage
took him to the back yard;

dug a shallow grave, mumbled something;
lay him down in there;
patted the top of his dirt pyre
my good deed done.

A dead robin in my yard,
by my window undone.
But, I was thinking was he really a deliberate suicide?

There were clues.
How can a Robin miss
a big house,
there must be more hints
to this dead Robin mystery.

Perhaps he was an old Robin, diseased,
disoriented by Alzheimer's, or a bird pandemic;

could have been a bird fight
he fled,
The Crows around here are criminals and rough;
the Robin could have been bested in a West Side Story Bird Fight.

I rose to look for myself;
to look for clues to Robins' death,
not content for the time being
to dismiss it lightly
as dumb bird lost.

So... from Robin's height my window pane looks straight
on through the house, out through the back windows and
out into the trees in my backyard.

Ah ha; Robin's keen eyes
could have been looking at
my backyard trees,
flying straight and hard, not seeing
the window pane. Blam and there you are-
an explanation which made some sense
Robin in seeing his destination could not see what was right before him;
Death with painful irony.

His grave lay beneath those trees
he was so intent
to reach.
Dead Robin flying fast,
gaze fixed upon his own death.
How Shakespearean.

I think final destinations,
as in where we will die:
inside hospitals, on the road,
in a plane for most of us
is unknown.

My robin could see his own demise;
the means to him were clear and unclear;
my window, both opaque
and transparent
was right there before him.

Ah, again how Shakespearean.
A Robin causality;

wonder if he had kids.

My Life

well folded clothes
in the closet
half-opening to
the marital bed
it is more of the
window not the door
more of the wing
not the claws
it is the bird
beside a pane
looking forward to
the best journey

Back In Your Own Backyard

Al jolson / billy rose / dave dreyer
The bird with feathers of blue
Is waiting for you
Back in your own backyard
Youll see your castles in spain
Through your window pane
Back in your own backyard
Oh you can go to the east
Go to the west
But someday youll come
Weary at heart
Back where you started from
Youll find your happiness lies
Right under your eyes
Back in your own backyard
The bird with feathers of blue
Is waiting for you
Back in your own backyard
Youll see your castles in spain
Through your window pane
Back in your own backyard
Oh you can go to the east
Go to the west
But someday youll come
Weary at heart
Back where you started from
Youll find your happiness lies
Right under your eyes
Back in your own backyard

Bluejay Greeting and Old Cat Laughing

I. In the gray of the morning the bluejay is spring up and down on the branch of the old tree. Suddenly the bird dives towards the ground over and over. Startling my breakfast and making me wonder what’s happening under the window pane.
II. In the gloom I sit lonely with my love gone and the old cat off somewhere. Curiosity accompanies me out the door where I find a baby bluejay in the grass. The mother bird is screaming and diving towards the old cat keeping him at bay.
III. I grin with the old cat and laugh. The bluejay takes notice and comes at me. I quickly scoop up the old cat and retreat behind the door where the old cat and I grin at each other, then go about our day.

Window Pain

As I sit here looking at the rain staring through my window pane I feel just sorrow and no glee sometimes I feel there's nothing left inside of me As I sit here staring through the window pane looking out towards the rain hoping the sun will make me change knowing how much I hate this pain. The sun came out but I did not change in once again came back the rain in so I sit here knowing it doesn't matter if its sun or rain the pain I feel will never change and once again I'm alone to stare at the rain sitting here looking through my window pane.

Double Wide Paradise

(paul thorn/billy maddox)
I dont want to cry
I dont want to walk the floor
This mobile home
Dont feel like home no more
Since you left tell me what else can I do
Just come back home
Forgive me and forget it
This bed I made
Im tired of sleepin in it
Its freezin cold, and baby that aint cool
Im waitin on you
Here at the ponderosa trailer park
There wasnt nothin that could keep us apart
Then I broke your heart, in our
Double wide, double wide, double wide paradise
Come on back to our double wide paradise
Double wide, double wide paradise
I bought a swimmin pool
From the man at sears
He put it together
I filled it up with tears
Cant find no happiness no matter what I do
Just cause I got
The treasures of the world
It dont mean nothin
If I aint got you girl
Inside my castle
I got the king size blues
Im waitin on you
So baby when you get to feelin alone
You know I always leave my porch light on
So you can come back home, to our
Double wide, double wide, double wide paradise
Come on back to our double wide paradise
Double wide, double wide paradise
We can have a second honeymoon
Well throw some ribs on the barbecue
Just like we used to do
Double wide, double wide, double wide paradise
Come on back to our double wide paradise
Double wide, double wide paradise

A Bird of Ploy

In a meadow serene
Appears a sight seldom seen
A bird and a cat
Stand back to back
Take ten paces
Then stop and turn their faces
The bird suddenly draws a gun
The cat in panic leaves on the run
The bird laughing drops the 'toy'
For it was merely a clever ploy
Giving the bird space to fly
Rather than stand, fight... and surely die!

When Will It Rain

No one ever sees you cry
You just keep it all inside
In a warm place, where you can hide
When will it rain
When will it rain
I saw you laugh the other day
But all too fast it went away
Now your skys cloudy n gray
Falling mainly on the plain
When will it rain
When will it rain
No water fallls
Down your window pane
And when I look into your eyes
That window to your soul cant lie
Theres water where the well went dry
So how long can there be a drought
When your dams filled with doubt
No place to build your house
Let your cup runneth over and out
I said for crying out loud
When will it rain
When will it rain
No water fallls
Down your window pane
When will it rain
When will it rain
A tear for fear is calling out your name
Rain on me

There’s a dragon fly

hanging at the mirror image of the window
catching the eye of a shrike
and the bird flashes past with stretched out claws
and for a moment the insect vibrates scared

and are swept away
by the bird that later twitters on the barbed wire
where it pierces the insect with a nail
and I am caught in the scene

and see the spreading its black wings
preparing for the next victim
and every insect that it spots
it catches.

A Swirling Breeze

A single breath here
billowing out lazily
to meet yours
in the in between;
prelude to a kiss

the breaths meet before our lips
the dance before the kiss
the double breath
now double warm
fresh from our lungs;

meet and swirl
each around the other
as our moist mouths quiver.

But then the slow inhale and these mixed two
are drawn back to their origins
and down lung-ward
they twirl dancing their lung dances.

But before that warm storm
can settle in mouth and lung
warm lips
ignite
an even larger tempest
and now two breaths;
sealed mouth
sealed kiss
make a lungful maelstrom
deep within
and goes to my center
where the explosion there
buckles my knees.

It’s war in my yard

It’s war in my yard
and the ginger Persian cat
lies stretched out
gazing at the trenches
where some gecko’s has disappeared
as if the golden eyes of it
can draw them out of cracks.

A little later the two dogs sniff under a bush
and chase something out of it
that draws a grey stripe
over the grass
past my window
and both cats
fly up with arching backs
and paws out deadly
to capture it.

Until You Come Back To Me

Though you don't call anymore
I sit and wait in vain
I guess I'll rap on your door
Tap on your window pane
I want to tell you baby
The changes I've been going through
Missing you, listen you
'till you come back to me
That's what I'm gonna do
Why did you have to decide
You had to set me free
I'm gonna swallow my pride
I'm gonna beg you to (please baby please) see me
I'm gonna walk by myself
Just to prove that my love is true
Oh, for you baby
'till you come back to me
That's what I'm gonna do
Living for you my dear
Is like living in a world of constant fear
In my plea, I've got to make you see
That our love is dying
Although your phone you ignore
Somehow I must explain
I'm gonna rap on your door
Tap on your window pane
I'm gonna camp on your step
Until I get through to you
I've got to change your view baby
'till you come back to me
That's what I'm gonna do

His Majesty

Behold the lion first to feast...
Behold his majesty!
This is no timid, gentle beast,
No coward soul has he!
His golden mane adorns his form
As he surveys his land...
And it does more than keep him warm,
It helps us understand...
This alpha male, this awesome king,
This sovereign meant to rule.
This titan feared by everything
That's wise and not a fool...
This monument to grand design,
This creature cruel and kind...
This legend will forever shine
Inside each heart and mind.
His growls are fierce and frightening,
They pierce us every time...
With nought held back, like lightning,
Courageous and sublime!
Behold the beast, so widely famed,
Triumphant to the end...
With strength increased, he stands untamed,
On that you can depend!
Don't stand too close! Those sharp teeth bite!
Those claws are meant to scratch!
How few are those who want to fight!
They know they've met their match!
If you're not Samson, run and hide...
Survival is the key...
With all the wisdom God's supplied...
Avoid his majesty!

by Stephen Gayford called 'His Majesty'.

The Red Rose

The little red rose tapped at my window—
Tapped at my window long years ago;
Glad would I run then, trip to the shadow,
Who was in hiding well did I know.
Last night I, nodding, heard at the casement
Soft knock-a-knocking come on the pane.
'Hush! 'Tis the lost rose taps at my window—
Red rose, oh, sweet rose, come back again!'
Listless I moved then, laughed at my fancies—
Wept at my fancies of years ago.
Slow went a-seeking who was in hiding,
Who came a-tapping—how should I know?
Pushed wide the window, leaned to the silence—
'Red rose, oh, sweet rose, come back again!'
'Twas but a dead branch, broken and brown branch,
Soft knock-a-knocking there on the pane.

Unfortunate Soul

The girl at the window
clears the glass.
Looks out and sees
the warm sweet grass.

She sees a butterfly
on the pane.
Wishes to touch it
but it doesn't remain.

It's off somewhere
and in its place
arrives the image
of her face.

She sees the tears.
Wipes her eyes,
looks out again
and sees some flies.

Knocks on the window
to shoo them away.
Returns to her gazing
for most the day.

Strapped in a chair
for many long years.
Takes pleasure daily
when nature appears.

Without the window,
nothing to see.
No flies, no grass,
no butterfly free.

Must keep it clean
or she will die.
Nothing to see
not even the sky.

Way Away

I think I'm breaking out
I'm gonna leave you now
Theres nothing for me here, it's all the same
And even though I know
That everything might go
Go downhill from here, I'm not afraid
Way away away from here I'll be
Way away away so you can see
How it feels to be alone and not believe (Feels to be alone and not believe)
Feels to be alone and not believe anything
You can't stop me now
You can't hold me down
You can't keep me here, I'm on my way
I've made it this far now
And I'm not burning out
No matter what you say, I'm not afraid
Way away away from here I'll be
Way away away so you can see
How it feels to be alone and not believe (Feels to be alone and not believe)
Feels to be alone and not believe anything
Letting out the noise inside of me (Letting out the noise inside of me)
Every window pane is shattering (Every window pane is shattering)
Cutting up my words before I speak (Cutting up my words)
This is how it feels to not believe
Letting out the noise inside of me (Letting out the noise inside of me)
