Eighteen
Beads of perspiration sweated out of the air we shared inside your Chevrolet.
I loved that car.
A Chevelle. Fast.
Super-fast.
Whenever we were together in it you'd drive like you were headed to put out a house fire.
What a thrill.
Pure adrenaline. I just knew that you were going to kill us both someday. But, on that particular July afternoon you slowed down because it was raining...
not the kind of drizzle that teases the plants to
stick out their tongues because they are too afraid to die.
No, this was a bona fide downpour...
the kind of rain that floats trees and turns roads into rivers, and causes the sewers to back up.
And I knew,
I just knew,
that I was gonna need to start a diary to
mark it all down with,
the same way that parents chart their children's growth each year on the inside of the door jam.
When water began pouring in over the floorboards you pulled off onto a gravel road a mile from the highway.
It was in that moment I lost all of my highly trained
self-control.
I was going to give in.
I was going to stop listening,
listening,
to the voice inside my head telling me it was wrong,
listening to my parents, listening to God,
and only thinking about the sound of the rain beating as loud as my hammering heart was on the car's metal rooftop overhead.
Pounding,
drowning out every single thought
and knowing that I couldn't keep my hands to myself,
couldn't keep my fingers out of your hair,
couldn't,
didn't
want to spoil the moment with words because the silence between us was far more potent...
and when your lips took mine they felt like they were
one hundred degrees Fahrenheit.
They were sweet claret wine, and I was intoxicated,
so drunk in love, and my head spun,
my knees wobbled like I'd just gotten off a carnival ride and later,
much later,
when our breathing slowed to keep time with the rain that had become bored with us, I remember digging my nails
into your blue jeans and begging silently
to stay forever young.

Turn Off The World
Got to pull it up
Got to pull it out
Got to survive
Got to stay calm
Got to think fast
Dont want to burn
Searching for a door
Searching for a way
Out of this thing
I dont know whats wrong
Dont know what to do
Im out of control
Nothing I can do
Nothing seems to work
Im barely alive
Got to slow it down
Got to do something
Or give in
Watching us fall
Trying everything
Fighting for life
Running out of time
I dont have a choice
Im riding it in
Im inside and Im trying to get out
Im inside and Im screaming for some help
And everythings gone wrong
Im listening to the sound of my own fear
Im listening to the sound of someones tears
Im listening to me
This is the fear
This is nothing like
You could believe
Panic in my heart
Like a cold hand
Pulling at strings
Ill do anything
Even pray to god
Just let me out
Turn off the machine
Turn off all the noise
Turn off the world
Im inside and Im trying to get out
Im inside and Im screaming for some help
And everythings gone wrong
Im listening to the sound of my own fear
Im listening to the sound of someones tears
Im listening to me
Im inside and Im trying to get out
Im inside and Im screaming for some help
And everythings gone wrong
Im listening to the sound of my own fear
Im listening to the sound of someones tears
Im listening to me

0008 A Ghazal
I lie awake as the light night-rain falls, listening
to its irregularities, listening
as the breeze blows it now and then
against the window and the curtain flutters; listening
and wondering if I can hear
the rain listening
to itself, as if – I sometimes think I hear this –
there’s a moment just before it stops as if listening
to its own decision to stop, as if it sighs,
thinks, that’s enough; it could be listening
to the gratitude of the closed flowers, the wet earth,
the ecstasy of roots which are themselves listening
to the flowers sleeping, sighing in their sleep.
But do you wonder why I’m listening
instead of sleeping, this warm rainy night?
What’s so important that it needs my listening?
It was the rain that woke me; and as I turned, sighed,
it was the thought of you last night here next to me, listening
not to me, but to your own dreams – which I may never share;
though I may share you in my listening
to your sweet sleep’s breath, felt faintly on my shoulder;
and so, there’s a question in my listening –
did you awake at the same night rain, you so far away,
awake, sigh, and in your half-awakened listening
know that I too, thought of you?
Sighed that sweet thought, of our shared, single listening? …
As the perfume of a rose may be more evocative than the rose,
So sweeter, steadier than thought, dream, memory – the listening!

When You Want Something You Can't Have
I can still remember all the pain that I felt, I can't believe that back then the thought of you, or sound of your voice could make me melt
I can still remember all the pain that you caused and how in the end my heart was the one shattered in pieces on the floor, but what I can't believe is that after all that I just wanted you more
It was like I was the stupid moth to your flame, and in the end I got burned and have only myself to blame, I knew I couldn't have you but that didn't stop me from wanting you, I guess I hoped maybe deep down inside you wanted me too
I knew from the start liking you was pointless, but that didn't stop me and in the end I was the one cleaning up my big mess
To make matters worse you knew how I felt all along, I pegged you for a kind, sweet guy but in the end I guess I was wrong
Back then it felt like the worse kind of pain and it felt like i couldn't go on, but looking back on it now, I realized it made me smarter and it made me strong
So in the end even though I was the that was one hurting oh so bad, I must admit as I look back on it I'm kind of glad, because you taught me a valuable lesson in what happens when you want something you can't have

I'm Gonna Be Alright
It's funny 'cause for a while
I walked around with a smile
But deep inside I could hear voices telling me this ain't right
Don't you know it's not for you
I always knew what I had to do
But it's hard to get away
Because I love you
I just tried to stay
I used to say I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And I know inside I'm gonna be alright
I said I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And that voice inside says I'm gonna be alright
Friends of mine say to me
They say you got control over me
You're not alone
I played a part
I saw the way you were from the start
Could I expect so much from you
You had a girl when I first met you
Did the best that you could do
Now I realize that I can't change you
I used to say I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And I know inside I'm gonna be alright
I said I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And that voice inside says I'm gonna be alright
Said I wouldn't walk away
Somedays I want to stay
But leaving you is what I need to do to be okay
Never thought it would be true
Me livin' without you
But now it's time for me to make a move
I used to say I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And I know inside I'm gonna be alright
I said I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And that voice inside says I'm gonna be alright

Blue Rain
Silently i hear the sound of the blue rain coming down.
It's late tonight and i just saw you walking by.
Without one word of hello or goodbye.
Just one look at you with someone new,
And then i knew i'd see you go around in the blue blue rain.
I didn't know one moment ago it could rain this way
You use to run straight to my arms now you turn away.
Oh i never knew such of feeling of blue.
Blue rain blue rain.
Blue rain.
Why did you make me love you than break my heart in two.
Then leave me alone here in the rain to cry for you.
Tomorrow will be filled with the lonely.blue rain.
Blue rain.blue rain.
I remember you all alone, walking on,
And crying,losing you,
In the blue blue rain.

Within Your Arms
living in the world I’ve created in my dreams for you and me
I didnt understand that anything could happen
when you take a chance
I never believed it before I was in your arms
I never opened my heart to what I couldn’t see
I didn’t want to see all the possibilities
there could be
there should be between you and me
I know something is different in me
I’ve never felt this way
this could be the start of something deeper
it felt so right to be in your arms
when I looked into your eyes that one night
I saw that same need
that same want
that same drive
that I was feeling inside
who ever thought I would have met you here tonight
you’re the last thing I expected
the world looks so much brighter within your arms tonight
I can see the day though the night
you have reached deep inside me somewhere and started something new
cause I know I’ve never felt this way without it being you
you’ve unlooked some kind of new and more passionate feeling
I never knew it could happen until it happened to me
I never knew it could have happened like that
I never knew it could be that strong
so fast
I thought it would take more time
I didn’t know but now it’s easy to see
if only you just looked into my eyes you would have saw
you could have seen that I would be loyal to you
you could have had your way with me right then and there
I wanted you to take me away
I wanted you to have what we wanted
I was ready for you to
I dare not to say it out loud
dare not to even think it for you might see it in my all telling eyes
only feeling my body telling me that I was ready
ready for you
and ready to tell you I’m willing to stay in your arms for ever

Billy's Rain
When I'm lying awake, listening to rain
hammering on the roof,
the phrase comes back to me,
our code for 'Let's get out of here'.
We were huddled in the back of a van
with the lights, the videotape equipment
and the man with the rain machine.
'Why can't we use the regular rain?' you asked,
as rain hammered on the roof.
'That's God's rain', said someone.
'It doesn't show up on film.
We need Billy's rain for this one'.
When I find myself soaked to the skin, tired,
or merely bored with God's rain,
the phrase comes back to me.
I'd say it now if I thought you were listening.

Is anybody listening?
Can they hear me when I call?
I'm shooting signals in the air
'Cause I need somebody's help
I can't make it on my own
So I'm giving up myself
Is anybody listening
Listening
I'll be standing here and I'm miles away
Making signals hoping they'd save me
I lock myself inside these walls
'Cause out there I'm always wrong
I don't think I'm gonna make it
So while I'm sitting here
On the eve of my death bed
I'll write this letter and hope it saves me
Is anybody listening?
Can they hear me when I call?
Shooting signals in the air
'Cause I need somebody's help
I can't make it on my own
So I'm giving up myself
Is anybody listening
Listening
I'm stuck in my own head and I'm oceans away
Would anybody notice if I chose to stay?
I'll send and SOS tonight
Wonder if I will survive
How in the hell did I get so far away this time
So now I'm sitting here
The time of my departure's near
I say a prayer
Please someone save me
Is anybody listening?
Can they hear me when I call?
Shooting signals in the air
'Cause I need somebody's help
I can't make it on my own
So I'm giving up myself
Is anybody listening
Listening
I'm lost here
I can't make it on my own
I don't wanna die alone
I'm so scared
Drowning now
Reaching out
Holding on to everything I love
Crying out
Dying now
Need some help
Is anybody listening?
Can you hear me when I call?
Shooting signals in the air
I need somebody's help
I can't make it on my own
I'm giving up myself
Is anybody listening?

The End Of The World
Go if you want to
I never tried to stop you
Know there's a reason
For all of this you're feeling
Low, it's not my call
You couldn't ever love me more
You couldn't love me more
You couldn't love...
Me - I don't show much
It's not that hard to hide you
See in a moment
I can't remember how to
Be all you wanted
I couldn't ever love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love...
You want me to cry and play my part
I want you to sigh and fall apart
We want this like everyone else
Stay if you want to
I always wait to hear you say
There's a last kiss
For all the times you run this way
It's not my fault
You couldn't ever love me more
You couldn't love me more
You couldn't love...
Love me more
Couldn't ever love me more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love
You want me to lie not break your heart
I want you to fly not stop and start
We want us like everything else
Maybe we didn't understand
Not just a boy and a girl
It's just the end of the
End of the world
Me - I don't say much
It's far too hard to make you
See in a moment
I still forget just how to
Be all you wanted
I couldn't ever love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more

Summer Rain Came Suddenly
Summer rain came suddenly
and you and she
had just got off the school bus
and had to run for shelter
and so entered the wood
and settled beneath some trees
which at least kept off
some of the rain
and as you both stood there
looking about the woodland
and listening to the rain
fighting its way through
the overhead branches and leaves
smelling the rain smell
hearing the sound
of rain falling
she said suddenly
That was unexpected
one minute the sun's shining
the next the downpour
and she turned
and looked at you
raindrops falling down
from her hair onto
the side of her nose
and sitting there
for a few moments
then sliding down
and moving along
her cheek
and you wiped
the drops off
with the end of your finger
and she took your finger
and mouthed it
and licked off the rain
and held your finger
in her hand
and said laughing
That was my raindropp
and you saw
how her lips parted
and in such a way
that you sensed
an inner explosion
of what you thought of
as love and said
Rain is rain
it's got its own smell
and touch
and feel
and she moved her lips
to your finger
and licked it once more
and you laughed
and felt your heart leap inside
and she said
releasing your finger
Love is love
something like rain
something you feel
and sense and know
and she kissed you and said
Mum' ll wonder where I am
we'd better go
and moving out
from beneath the trees
you ran off together
into the falling rain
all over again.

Unobtainable
Whether it was putting in an extra beat,
or leaving one out, I couldn't tell.
My heart seemed to have forgotten
everything it ever knew
about timing and co-ordination
in its efforts to get through to someone
on the other side of a wall.
As I lay in bed, I could hear it
hammering away inside my pillow,
being answered now and then
by a distant guitar-note of bedsprings,
pausing for a moment, as if listening,
Then hurrying on as before.

Raining Again
I never even stopped to dream and
That Id see anything and
The world is coming out so cold
Oh, and it's raining again
Light on your car light, bullets on tin
Oh, and its raining again
Open the door and pulling me in
Nothing here but nothing less
Cold heart is stuck in this
Couldn't say the kindest words we knew
Everything I tried to say but
no one listens anyway
I had to give up all that I knew
Oh, and it's raining again
Light on your car light, bullets on tin
Oh, and its raining again
Open the door and pulling me in
Oh, and it's raining
Raining again
Oh, and it's raining
Raining again
Nothing here but nothing less
Everything we both regret
Couldn't say the kindest words we knew
Cause it was winter time and
We wanted some more time and
We watched the girls try something knew
We didn't even stopped to see that
That It was breaking me and
the world is coming out so cold
What you want you couldn't get, you
Couldn't wait for something less, you
had to give up everything you knew
Oh, and it's raining again
Light on your car light, bullets on tin
Oh, and its raining again
Open the door and pulling me in
[2x]
Sadness like water raining down
Raining down, raining down, raining down
[5x]
Oh, and it's raining
Raining again
Oh, and it's raining
Raining again

Little Queen
now and forever
till the sun, oh my heart
become cold
how many time have you heard 'I love you'?
how many time have you said that?
you don't understand what it is
it couldn't be catched
it couldn't be seen
something there
it doesn't have a name and isn't called a name
some shining there
I keep listening what small creations say
one by one
through silence, spreads like water ripples
I like you
and I love you
we all open our ears and listening your voice
I am going to take you home
going home and learning again
the way to respect precious thing
learning again not letting go
and holding it with all your hands

Listening
Your skin attached this fragile cliche
Of my broken heart attack
You should swallow your teeth and hang out
Stay for a while
If your heart's still beating it must be the blood
If your lungs are still working it must be the mud
If its still light out than a kick in the ribs
today's worth living
I don't see anything now
So just say what you wanna say
It's kind of funny how I'm not listening anyway
Lights out, I can't stand to hear you scream
While we were making love I was fast asleep
and the night sky better give something up (give something up)
I don't see anything now
So just say what you wanna say
It's kind of funny how I'm not listening anyway
[x2]
Lights out, lights out, lights out, lights out...
Lights out! I can't stand to hear you scream
While we were making love I was fast asleep
If your heart's still beating it must be the blood
If your lungs are still working it must be the mud
If its still light out than a kick in the ribs
And today's worth living, it probably is
I don't see anything now
So just say what you wanna say
It's kind of funny how I'm not listening anyway
[x2]
I'm not listening anyway
I'm not listening anyway
I'm not listening
Listening, I'm not listening
I'm not listening
I'm not listening
I'm not listening

God Only Knows
I was waiting for something
I was listening to my breathing
Like a man listening to life
I was looking for fire
It could take me or leave me
It could all just burn away
The oxygen law
It remains me
Id been surrounded for hours
By the sound of thinking metal
And I knew something was wrong
I can tell you what fear is
It is the smell of burning
And Id been close once before
I waited a long time
How I survived God only knows
It seemed like forever
How I survived God only knows
I dont like the memory
How I survived God only knows
How I survived God only knows
I remember the feeling
Ill remember forever
How it all just came apart
I dont believe in praying
I dont believe in a god
Now I question everything
The dreamer is gone
Im an old man
I could tell you of horror
I could show you the pieces
But I just want to forget
Im not sure if I saw it
Im not sure if I heard it
I just screamed i cant get out
i cant get out

The Street Only Knew Your Name
Your street, rich street or poor
You should always be sure of your street
There's a place in your heart,
When you know from the start
And you can't be complete without a street
Keep movin' on, just like a train
Sometimes you gotta look back to the street again
Would you prefer all those castles in spain
Or a view of the street from your window pane
When you were young, so young
So very very young
When you were young, so young
So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name, oh your precious name, precious name
There was walter and joy, kate and roy
All hung around the corner lamplight
Get together sing some songs
Like boppin' the blues - you make me feel alright
That was long before fortune and fame
No such thing as a star when you've played that game
Everyone knew who everyone was
There was no preference in the street no, no
When you were young, so young
So very very young
When you were young, so young
So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name, oh your precious name
And you walked around in the heart of town
Listening for that sound
And you walk around in the heart of town
Listening for that sound
Blue suede shoes, it was the blue suede shoes
When you were young, so young
So very very young
When you were young, so young
So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name

Did You Say The Weather Is Not Fine?
i didn't know really that it is always raining.
most of my time is spent inside my room.
inside my self. inside the marrow of my bones.
i do not like the rain. Or any news of it.
I do not go outside, i may meet the rain and
i told you
i do not like any rain, or any sound of the rain.
i am inside myself. And there is no rain anymore.
and of course, the weather is always fine
deep inside this miniature world of fine weathers
that i make myself.
just fine. and too small for any kind of rain.
clouds don't fit in here.

Georgia Rain
1st Verse
Barefoot in the bed 'a your truck
On a blanket lookin' up
Half a moon peekin' down at us
From underneath the clouds
Teenage kids sneakin' out again
Heard the thunder rollin' in
We were fallin' the moment when
It all came pourin' down
1st Chorus
The Georgia rain
On the Jasper County clay
Couldn't wash away
What I felt for you that day
Just you and me down an old dirt road
Nothin' in our way
Except for the Georgia rain
2nd Verse
Cotton fields remember when
Flash 'a lightnin' drove us in
We were soaked down to the skin
By the time we climbed inside
And I don't remember what was poundin' more
Heart in my chest or the hood of that Ford
As the sky fell in, the storm clouds poured
Worlds away outside
2nd Chorus
The Georgia rain
On the Jasper County clay
Couldn't wash away
All the love we made
Just you and me down that old dirt road
No one saw a thing
Except for the Georgia rain
3rd Verse
Screen door flappin' in the wind
Same ol' house I grew up in
Can't believe I'm back again
After all these years away
You fixed your Daddy's house up nice
I saw it yesterday when I drove by
Looks like you've made yourself a real good life
What else can I say
Tag Chorus
The Georgia rain
On the Jasper County clay
Couldn't wash away
The way I loved you to this day
The ol' dirt road's paved over now
Nothin' here's the same
Except for the Georgia rain

MY First My Last
It’s quite bizarre what you think about when you’re swimming.
I’m thinking of what I’m doing and Christine from the beginning.
How can I not remember the look she gave me when we first met
and her brilliant friendly smile, oh, how could I ever forget.
When we touched and held hands for the very first time
a thrill went through my body and up and down my spine.
And when I smelled the fragrance of your skin and hair
I wanted to be with you forever no matter what, or where.
I thought your soft lips were going to melt when we first kissed
oh, I can taste them now and their touch is so painfully missed.
You turned me inside out and I needed to be as one with you
I wanted the souls of our body to be connected, and I still do.
Wherever we kissed you tasted so perfect and I wanted more and more
you made my heart beat so fast and loud you could hear it I’m sure.
And whenever you were unhappy your sadness made me unhappy too
I tried to make you laugh or smile, so the sun would shine through.
The occasions when you sobbed and cried I couldn’t hold back my tears
I shared your sadness, your emotions, your problems, and your fears.
That day by the river when I wished my nervous body would stop shaking
my heart rate and breathing were so fast and seemed to be accelerating.
Our excitement and passion was becoming stronger and stronger
both of us wanted to go further, and we couldn’t wait any longer.
We made love for the first time on that warm summer afternoon
feeling guilty didn’t help us, but we had to do it again very soon.
When our passion became uncontrollable and our desires burst through,
we made love so often, and it was the natural thing to do.
We didn’t care where we made love be it night or day,
in the lush green fields, or on the freshly cut hay.
As time passed, when we were alone you liked me to describe
from the very first kiss how I intended to make you come alive.
We wanted to be with each other throughout the day and night,
but that couldn't be, so we would argue and say words to spite.
I wanted to become a part of you, body and soul forever
and you felt the same, two as one and parting never.
Side by side we would have jumped from the highest mountain
holding hands, kissing and spiralling to our deaths for certain.
When I wasn’t with you I thought about you all the time,
but my jealousy was eating away deep inside my mind
and this was driving you further and further away from me,
but I loved you and wanted you more than could ever be.
I realise now that my jealousy made you grow tired of me
and because of this I’m swimming far out to sea.
As I have now come to the end of looking back in time
my arms are aching, but I’m not looking behind.
For hours now I've been swimming in this cold salty sea
my limbs aren't moving like they ought to be.
I still see your face my darling, but without you I cannot live
and yet I have so much love left in me to give.
I’ve left an addressed letter to you in my hotel room,
it explains everything and I hope you get it soon.
So goodbye my dearest love I’m still thinking of you
and don’t blame yourself that I feel the way I do.
