Unobtainable
Whether it was putting in an extra beat,
or leaving one out, I couldn't tell.
My heart seemed to have forgotten
everything it ever knew
about timing and co-ordination
in its efforts to get through to someone
on the other side of a wall.
As I lay in bed, I could hear it
hammering away inside my pillow,
being answered now and then
by a distant guitar-note of bedsprings,
pausing for a moment, as if listening,
Then hurrying on as before.

Eighteen
Beads of perspiration sweated out of the air we shared inside your Chevrolet.
I loved that car.
A Chevelle. Fast.
Super-fast.
Whenever we were together in it you'd drive like you were headed to put out a house fire.
What a thrill.
Pure adrenaline. I just knew that you were going to kill us both someday. But, on that particular July afternoon you slowed down because it was raining...
not the kind of drizzle that teases the plants to
stick out their tongues because they are too afraid to die.
No, this was a bona fide downpour...
the kind of rain that floats trees and turns roads into rivers, and causes the sewers to back up.
And I knew,
I just knew,
that I was gonna need to start a diary to
mark it all down with,
the same way that parents chart their children's growth each year on the inside of the door jam.
When water began pouring in over the floorboards you pulled off onto a gravel road a mile from the highway.
It was in that moment I lost all of my highly trained
self-control.
I was going to give in.
I was going to stop listening,
listening,
to the voice inside my head telling me it was wrong,
listening to my parents, listening to God,
and only thinking about the sound of the rain beating as loud as my hammering heart was on the car's metal rooftop overhead.
Pounding,
drowning out every single thought
and knowing that I couldn't keep my hands to myself,
couldn't keep my fingers out of your hair,
couldn't,
didn't
want to spoil the moment with words because the silence between us was far more potent...
and when your lips took mine they felt like they were
one hundred degrees Fahrenheit.
They were sweet claret wine, and I was intoxicated,
so drunk in love, and my head spun,
my knees wobbled like I'd just gotten off a carnival ride and later,
much later,
when our breathing slowed to keep time with the rain that had become bored with us, I remember digging my nails
into your blue jeans and begging silently
to stay forever young.

Billy's Rain
When I'm lying awake, listening to rain
hammering on the roof,
the phrase comes back to me,
our code for 'Let's get out of here'.
We were huddled in the back of a van
with the lights, the videotape equipment
and the man with the rain machine.
'Why can't we use the regular rain?' you asked,
as rain hammered on the roof.
'That's God's rain', said someone.
'It doesn't show up on film.
We need Billy's rain for this one'.
When I find myself soaked to the skin, tired,
or merely bored with God's rain,
the phrase comes back to me.
I'd say it now if I thought you were listening.

Inside Of My Guitar
INSIDE OF MY GUITAR
Melvin Banggollay
When I saw my guitar hanging on the wall
It reminds me that once I do sung with joy
as I passionately air a melody one can enjoy
while my guitar hummed songs I can't recall.
Come inside of my guitar
There's a garden full of star
Shinning to tingle your desire
To hear me even you're afar
For the wind will surely whisper
deep in your hear to remember
my love to thee will be forever.
But now my guitar solemnly rest in the wall
with no sweet tune to hum one can enjoy
For my heart could no longer feel the joy
to air tender melody I love to sing and recall.
I buried my desire to sing forever
For you are no longer here to hear
the love songs I used to proudly offer
whenever we are enjoying together
Sharing melody with my old guitar
that one can even hear from afar
as the wind loved to share its nectar.

Ireland
I called you by sweet names by wood and linn,
You answered not because my voice was new,
And you were listening for the hounds of Finn
And the long hosts of Lugh.
And so, I came unto a windy height
And cried my sorrow, but you heard no wind,
For you were listening to small ships in flight,
And the wail on hills behind.
And then I left you, wandering the war
Armed with will, from distant goal to goal,
To find you at the last free as of yore,
Or die to save your soul.
And then you called to us from far and near
To bring your crown from out the deeps of time,
It is my grief your voice I couldn't hear
In such a distant clime.

Ghost In His Guitar
Down the drain pipe cross the yard and through the fence
I risked a whoopin' every time I went
'Cause white boys weren't allowed
On the colored side of town
But I was proud to call
That old black man my friend
He had a pillow by the bed he used to pray on
And a beat up old guitar he let me play on
I knew where my fingers went
From his greasy fingerprints
Yeah, he was passin' on
What was handed down to him
(Chorus)
And it soaked up all the blood and sweat and teardrops
And the beers he missed in smokey little bars
And sometimes that old man he comes alive in my hands
I feel the beating of his sad old broken heart
Just like there's a ghost in this guitar
A ghost in this guitar
Well, the night before he died he made me take it
He said, "You play it now, 'cause I gotta go"
And I can feel him in my fingers when I play it
'Cause sometimes I'm in control
And sometimes I just sit back
And let him go
Sit back and let him go
(Repeat Chorus)
Take a listen to the ghost in this guitar

The Sounds
I can hear her heart beat
It seams a little strong
I can hear the things I did wrong
I can hear her thoughts
By looking in her eyes
I can hear her all the times she cried
I can hear the memories
As they echo off the wall
Falling from the pictures down the hall
I can hear regret
Building up in side of me
And I can hear all the things
I could not see
Those are the sounds of a woman leaving
Stronger then the wind in a willow tree
Those are the sounds of a heart breaking
You can't hear it
But the noise is killing me
I should of heard it coming
But I chose to pretend
I should of recognizes that sound
Way back then
But I just wouldn't listen didn't want to all those years
Now the truth is ringing clear
In my ears
Those are the sounds of a woman leaving
Stronger then the wind in willow tree
Those are the sounds of a heart breaking
You can't hear it
But the noise is killing me
Those are the sounds of a heart breaking
You can't hear it
But the noise is killing me
I can hear it
And the silent is killing me

Better Off Dead
Ash his heart onto the ground
Pull his guts out by frustration
Be careful you might kill him
Just cause he cant hear what you say
Doesnt mean that hes not listening
If you listen to your words
He might like what you say
So youve been going out for years
And Im sure that youve been happy
Happy with your role
Youve been looking up to him
As if youve forgotten of your own life
Forgotten of your own face
Burn and start again
Just cause he cant hear what you say
Doesnt mean that hes not listening
If you listen to your words
He might like what you say
On my own again
Thats what she said
Im leaving you tomorrow
But she already left
She already left me
She said Im better off dead
Its your own life
Live it for yourself
Its your own life
Live for your...
Just cause he cant hear what you say
Doesnt mean that hes not listening
If you listen to your words
He might like what you say
On my own again
Thats what she said
Im leaving you tomorrow
But she already left
She already left me
She said Im better off dead

An Epiphany In The Car
The gathering black clouds-eerie feeling-
spread over blue sky, putting me in a pensive mood.
Not long after, dark clouds commence
raining and slowly seceded from the rest and leaving
open to view, a silver disk setting in distant west.
Being overcome by flaring orange- red
then and there, the sun falls into the warm arms
of the fiery glow.
Looking into his face, hints of grey down the side that,
seemed to further the water flow down window panes and eyes:
Childhood days were recalled from distant memory of
walking out the sun right into the cool rain.
Too, raindrops on window sounded like Momma's ever whipping tune:
'I told you…beat, beat, beat...not to play in the rain…beat, beat, beat…
'OUCH, 'her lyrics and beating continued hours, it seemed.
Still, we sat in car looking out on the rain, I felt the warm
sunsets and the years of Momma's missed presences.
Closing distance between then and now, still in awe, of blazing
sun to the right, clouds raining tears from distant sky on my left,
and with much effort futhering my own sunset.

The End Of The World
Go if you want to
I never tried to stop you
Know there's a reason
For all of this you're feeling
Low, it's not my call
You couldn't ever love me more
You couldn't love me more
You couldn't love...
Me - I don't show much
It's not that hard to hide you
See in a moment
I can't remember how to
Be all you wanted
I couldn't ever love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love...
You want me to cry and play my part
I want you to sigh and fall apart
We want this like everyone else
Stay if you want to
I always wait to hear you say
There's a last kiss
For all the times you run this way
It's not my fault
You couldn't ever love me more
You couldn't love me more
You couldn't love...
Love me more
Couldn't ever love me more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love
You want me to lie not break your heart
I want you to fly not stop and start
We want us like everything else
Maybe we didn't understand
Not just a boy and a girl
It's just the end of the
End of the world
Me - I don't say much
It's far too hard to make you
See in a moment
I still forget just how to
Be all you wanted
I couldn't ever love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more

Andrew-in loveing memmorie part one
Lying in bed as
my heart beat slow
i could feel yours on my side
i talked to you
i knew you could hear me
i miss the way your heart beat
i miss when you moved in my stomach
when i found out i was going to have you
i thought to myself i get to be a mom
and i have always wanted that
due in april you were supposed to be
but then the earth took you away from me
i couldnt feel your heart beat
as i knew there was something wrong
my stomach hurts so bad and i cried for so long
seems like just yesterday i would sing and
youd push on my ribs if i stopped
how you loved to hear my voice
from the moment i knew you were there
i loved you like you were already here
a new addition to my heart you will always be
your dad wasnt ready to be a dad
but he wanted you just as much as i did
i thought it would work out for the best
but now your gone and theres half of my heart
that i have lost with you
i miss your heart beat
and when you made my stomach growel
and you pushed against my ribs
i loved singing and talking to you
your dad loved you
just as much as i did
so my dear son i say
goodbye and rest in peace
your my angel now so you can watch over me
please watch over your dad to
he knows you and he needs you too
know that we love you and miss you so
we will see you around and evertime
the wind blows and a flower blooms
and the sunshines we know its you
i miss you baby and love you too

Finally...Here We Are
I knew you knew me.
The moment I saw you,
I knew you knew.
I knew you felt my heart.
The passion and compassion.
Here inside...
Wishing for someone to recognize.
I knew you knew me.
The moment I saw you,
I knew you knew.
I knew you too wanted to touch.
And we hungered for that very much.
And finally...
Here we are!
To notice,
And taste this dream.

Guitar In A Stand
My guitar sits in a stand
rosewood neck
and maple bridge
chrome pegs
and stainless steel frets
six steel & brass strings
silent now
and no songs
for my fingers she longs
without regrets
upon her strings
a part of my heart
but she gives feelings in me wings
But there she sits silently
just an inanimate thing
that comes to life somehow
when I feel alone
and overfilled with the sadness
that life seems to bring
she makes me somehow
want to play and sing
through tears and everything
and in the end she says it's OK
somehow she understands
and now I look at her there
in her stand
and get up and walk across the room
to hold her in my hand
and play a little Bell Bottm Blues
and Little Wing
she allows this weary heart to sing
as if it meant something
I think when I'm dead and gone
this guitar will carry on
the memory of my feelings
and the memory of my hands
to another player
who has a similar feeling
and who understands
and listens to each note that rings
and makes them think of love and things
Or maybe it will have meaning to someone
or sit in a case or upon a wall
I wonder about it all
but me I hear something
between each note
as I bend the string and listen
a blue note
reminds me of you
and how your smokey eyes appear to glisten
and of your soft kind way
and from far away
my heart hesitates
and skips a beat
and dreams
and listens
and makes it's way to you

Ten Euro Note
Ten Euro Note
The old road into town is only used by walkers
now, weird people, who would look out of place
anywhere else and Marian Hyde, who writes
about alternative lifestyles, in the Guardian.
I had found a wallet with a twenty euro note,
photos of a posing nude woman, it belonged to
someone named Carol. I asked around, they all
knew her, a pro who often walked this way.
A handmade and of real leather and on and
impulse I added a ten euro note and wondered
if when I caught up with her she would notice,
or was my motive more self serving?
I met up with Carol at a road side pub gave her
the purse, she opened it counted the money,
said nothing, but she was talking to a footballer
who wanted to be tennis professional.
I walked where I was accosted by a Liverpool
comedian who couldn’t stop telling jokes,
I soon stopped laughing, smiling and listening,
but my disinterest didn’t matter anyway.
Carol came out, joined us, she had bought me
a beer and was in a good mood, the comedian
had fallen asleep, she knew the why of my ten
euro note and I knew of her nude pictures.

The Wall
I shall beat my head against the wall
Until the moment that I die.
Or until the wall does fall
Then beside it I will sit and cry.
Then on another wall I must beat my head,
Until I just cant stand the pain
Then you will understand what I have said
My loss; will be your gain.
And on that wall will be my blood
And there it will always stay,
Mixed with the stone it will be the mud
And like my pain it wont wash away.
I will pound my head against the wall
Until the moment that I am dead
And only then, will I stand tall
Because then will my anguish will be fed.
As I hold no sorrows or remorse
So much pain that I will release
As this is my only course
And only you this action will it please.
I will pound my head against the wall
Until the moment that I am dead
And from the wall my blood will fall
In remembrance of the words I have said.
Then the world will know that I died that day
As my soul will be all that will be left
And in your mind to GOD you will here me pray,
As my destiny, has then been set.
I will pound my head against this wall
Don't you know that I am dying
Then one day, this time you will recall
As you will know that I never was lying.
My blood will be kept on this old stone wall
And there for you it will always stay
And only then will this man stand tall
Because then you will understand what I did say.
Now only GOD can hear what I am crying
From the actions that I did or even say
Upon this wall please know I was only trying
But until then, it will remind you of myself everyday.

I'm Gonna Be Alright
It's funny 'cause for a while
I walked around with a smile
But deep inside I could hear voices telling me this ain't right
Don't you know it's not for you
I always knew what I had to do
But it's hard to get away
Because I love you
I just tried to stay
I used to say I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And I know inside I'm gonna be alright
I said I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And that voice inside says I'm gonna be alright
Friends of mine say to me
They say you got control over me
You're not alone
I played a part
I saw the way you were from the start
Could I expect so much from you
You had a girl when I first met you
Did the best that you could do
Now I realize that I can't change you
I used to say I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And I know inside I'm gonna be alright
I said I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And that voice inside says I'm gonna be alright
Said I wouldn't walk away
Somedays I want to stay
But leaving you is what I need to do to be okay
Never thought it would be true
Me livin' without you
But now it's time for me to make a move
I used to say I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And I know inside I'm gonna be alright
I said I couldn't do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasn't with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And that voice inside says I'm gonna be alright

I Couldn't Say Goodbye
I watch you as you're sleeping
As I'm standing at the door
I don't want to let you go
But I can't hold on anymore
I just can't find the strength
To say I'm leaving you
It's over now, it's over now
And there's nothing I can do
I couldn't say goodbye
Couldn't stand the pain
Couldn't watch you cry
Knowing that your heart would break
So I let you sleep
Till the morning light
When you wake up and you read the note I write
Telling you that I
I couldn't say goodbye
I'm walking down this rainy street
Thinking you're awake by now
As you read my letter
And the tears fall from your eyes
Just know I tried to make it work
It just wasn't meant to be
I needed you, I needed you
But not the way you needed me
I couldn't say goodbye
Couldn't stand the pain
Couldn't watch you cry
Knowing that your heart would break
So I let you sleep
Till the morning light
When you wake up and you read the note I write
Telling you that I
I couldn't say goodbye
I didn't mean to hurt you
I didn't want to make you cry
It's over now, yes it's over now
I just couldn't say goodbye
I couldn't say goodbye
Couldn't stand the pain
Couldn't watch you cry
Knowing that your heart would break
So I let you sleep
Till the morning light
When you wake up and you read the note I write
Telling you that I
I couldn't say goodbye

The Clasp
She was four, he was one, it was raining, we had colds,
we had been in the apartment two weeks straight,
I grabbed her to keep her from shoving him over on his
face, again, and when I had her wrist
in my grasp I compressed it, fiercely, for a couple
of seconds, to make an impression on her,
to hurt her, our beloved firstborn, I even almost
savored the stinging sensation of the squeezing,
the expression, into her, of my anger,
"Never, never, again," the righteous
chant accompanying the clasp. It happened very
fast-grab, crush, crush,
crush, release-and at the first extra
force, she swung her head, as if checking
who this was, and looked at me,
and saw me-yes, this was her mom,
her mom was doing this. Her dark,
deeply open eyes took me
in, she knew me, in the shock of the moment
she learned me. This was her mother, one of the
two whom she most loved, the two
who loved her most, near the source of love
was this.

Rocking With My Guitar
I'M JUST SITING HERE STRUMMING
WITH MY GUITAR IN HAND
FEELING SO RELAX
WITH EVERY CHORD I TOUCH MAN
AND ROCKING AWAY
FROM WHAT THE GREAT ONES WROTE
BY FOLLOWING EACH MUSIC NOTE
AND PICTURING ME IN THERE BAND
ASK TO DO A SOLO ON MY GUITAR
AND FEELING LIKE A BRIEF SUPER STAR
IF FRONT OF THE CROWD
CHEERING AND JEERING FOR ME
WHEN I JUMP IN THE AIR
WITH MY GUITAR IN HAND
READY TO DO ANOTHER CLASSIC SONG
AND STILL THERE SCREAMING
CLAPPING ALONG
UNTIL I COME BACK TO EARTH
PUTTING MY GUITAR GENTLY IN IT'S STAND
NEXT TO MY READING LIGHT
AND QUIETLY CALL IT A RIGHT

Does Anybody Hear Me
Chorus:
Does anybody hear me?
Is anybody listening to whats going on?
Before we move on.
Does anybody hear me?
Is anybody listening?
How can we change hate?
Before its too late?
Verse 1:
Young with dreams, (ooo oo)
Had em for a long time (ooo oo)
Well nothings impossible
As long as you put your mind to it.
Sometimes you wanna let go
Hold on tight
But you gotta believe
With God on your side
Chorus:
Does anybody hear me?
Is anybody listening to whats going on?
Before we move on.
Does anybody hear me?
Is anybody listening?
How can we change hate?
Before its too late?
Verse 2:
Happy, (ooo oo)
Thats all youll ever wanna be. (ooo oo)
Well, knowledge is power,
Absorb as much as you need
At times I feel like love passed me by
Just imagine how the kids feel inside.
Chorus:
Does anybody hear me?
Is anybody listening to whats going on?
Before we move on.
Does anybody hear me?
Is anybody listening?
How can we change hate?
Before its too late?
Does anybody hear me? (when you feel you need a friend)
(anybody listening...)
Is anybody listening to whats going on?
(on.... yeah, yeah, yeah)
Before we move on.
