Full of excuses

I didn't telephone a.m.
as you'd be having breakfast then.

I didn't telephone at noon
for fear you might be lunching soon.

I didn't telephone p.m.
I thought you might be sleeping and

I didn't telephone at 8
for dinner in your house is late.

I didn't telephone at 9
for fear this may be T.V. time.

I didn't telephone today
as time just seemed to slip away.

No wonder that we never speak,
perhaps I'll try sometime next week?

Neon Telephone

Maybe she'll call me (Neon telephone)
Maybe she won't (Maybe she won't)
And if she don't (Neon telephone)
I'm gonna lose my mind (This time I'm gonna lose my mind)
It's kinda dark in here (Neon telephone)
I need a light (It's 2 bright)
I could use a sexy situation that would do my body just right
2night I'm gonna lose my mind
Sometimes her pride is like a big tall building
It hides the street that leads 2 a sweet mystery
(Sometimes) Sometimes we blow the chance 2 be so happy (Happy)
If we could only make up our minds
We could have such a good time
I know she wants me (Neon telephone)
I know she cares (I don't care)
Tell me what's stoppin' me (I don't care 2 know)
From runnin' right over there and runnin' my fingers through your hair
I'm goin' crazy, yes I am (Neon telephone)
Why can't U understand? (He needs 2 change)
I can't stop (can't stop) thinkin' about U, baby
This time I'm gonna lose my mind (This time I'm gonna lose it)
Why can't U call me, baby? Pick up the phone
U know your little Prince can't be alone
I need some of your sweet, sweet... oooh!
(Neon telephone)
(I don't care)
(Neon telephone)
Hello
How come U didn't call?
What, U think U're 2 good or something?
Can I talk 2 U?
Are U alone?
Good God

I have gone on the air and announced my telephone number at the Washington Post. I go into the night, talking to people, looking for things. The great dreaded thing every reporter lives with is what you don't know. The source you didn't go to. The phone call you didn't return.

Didnt Know

Didn't know what you had
Until you lost it
Didn't know what you own
Until you got it
Didn't know of your sins
Until you fought it.
Didn't know what you needed
Until you sought it.

Didn't know your lies
Until someone spoke them
Didn't know of the truth
Until someone wrote them
Didn't remembered your dreams
Until someone awoke them
Didn't know they died
Until someone chocked them.

Didn't know you had guilt
Until you cried
Didn't know you felt sadness
Until you tried to hide
Didn't know you felt shame
Until you lied
Didn't know you believed in GOD
Until you asked him why.

Didn't know you felt sorrow
Until you shed a tear
Didn't know that you were scared
Until I saw your fear
Didn't know that you hated
Until you were near
Didn't know that you were unhappy
Until you looked in a mirror.

Didn't know who you truly were
Until your ways you sewed
Didn't know that you were evil
Until the truth was showed
Didn't know you did this before
Until I saw all of your woe
Didn't know who you really were
Though I wished then I did know.

Telephone

(b. edwards/d. miller)
When you feel like you need someone there
Feel like no one really cares
Call me on the telephone
Ill be there
When you feel like you really need love
Ill always be by your side
Call me on the telephone
Ill be there
Everyone needs someone to love
Call me, Ill give you love
When you feel like you need someone there
Feel like no one really cares
Call me on the telephone
Ill be there
Well share a love that will never end
Lean on me and Ill be your friend
In your darkest hour Ill be your light
Like a star shining in the night
Call me on the telephone
Ill be there
Everyone needs someone to love
Call me, and Ill give you love
In my heart, youd have a home
But Ill never leave you alone
When you feel like you need someone there
Feel like no one really cares
Call me on the telephone
Ill be there
When you feel like you really need love
Ill always be by your side
Call me on the telephone
Ill be there
When you feel like you need someone there
Feel like no one really cares
Call me on the telephone
Ill be there

Memory Of Telephone Calls

Are you waiting
for me to call.
All you will hear
is telephone silence.

Telephone silence
is a sound
I always hear.
I fear.
A telephone
is a hated thing
when it
does not ring.

And yet
so often
it has been
our only means
of communication.
The only means
by way of which
I could
communicate
with you.

Your letters
and cards
have given me
past
pleasure and joy.
But also
the sharp
separation
of long
or final goodbyes.

We often
spoke on
the telephone
later cell phones
because we
could not
come to
each others houses.

We could not
cross the threshold
of each others
doorsteps.
We could not
warm ourselves
by the hearthside
of each others company.

And now
the long cold
of winter separation
is upon us.
And now
the long chill
of bitter separation
has come again.

There's something wrong with my line,
When i dial my baby's number
I get a click everytime
Mr. telephone man
There's something wrong with my line
When i dial my baby's number
I get a click every time
When i dial 611 computer service
She said "hello may i help you
Please?"
I told her something must be wrong
With my phone
Cause my baby wouldn't hang up
On me

There something wrong with my line
When i dial my baby's number i get a
Click every time
Mr. telephone man
There something wrong with my line
When i dial my baby's number i get a
Click every time
She let the phone ring 20 times
Before she answered
Let me tell you what happened then
A minute later i got the operator
Saying please hang up and place
Your call agian
Mr. telephone man
There's something wrong with
My line
When i dial my baby's number
I get a click everytime
Mr. telephone man,
Soemthing's wrong with my line
I try to dial her number
I get a click everytime
Soem strange man is on the
Telephone
He keeps telling me my baby
Aint home
She got no party line
Situation blowing my mind
Oh, i just can't take this anymore
Please operator
See what you can do,
I dialed the right number
But i still couldn't get through
Could you just check the line
Just one more time if you can
I'm pretty sure her phone
Wouldn't be answered by no man
Mr. telephone man
There's something wrong with
My line
When i dial my baby's number
I get a click everytime
Mr. telephone man,
Soemthing's wrong with my line
I try to dial her number
I get a click everytime
Must be a bad connection
I give her my love and affection
I just can't take this no more
This situation blowing my mind
Blowing my mind
Can't get my baby on the line
I tried dialing information (mr. telephone man)
I can't get no coperation (mr. telephone man)
Her sister's on the phone telling me my baby
Aint at home
Come on baby i just can't take it no more
Help me out

Armed Reaction in Muckleneuk Ridge

While we lived in the mansion
in Muckleneuk Ridge
our maid Rose called me at work,
about some people
with two vans at the gate

that said that they were from Telkom
to install telephone lines
and she could not comprehend
what they were doing there
as the telephone was already working.

I told her to let the two dogs loose
in the yard,
to lock the house
and to press the emergency
alarm button
and that trustworthy maid
did just that,
as she was scared
of being raped by the robbers.

Those men were in
for a big surprise
and although they didn’t
enter the premises
they were blocked of
in the pipe-stem driveway
and left their vans
(which were stolen)
just there
and tried to outrun
the armed reaction
jumping some garden fences
rather than shooting it out.

One's A Couple

Thanks, but no thanks
I Didn't come here to dance
I'm with somebody, I'm afraid I'll have to pass
Two years ago he left me, now his memory's back around
One's a couple baby,
Two's a crowd
We came in here to be alone
No TV, no telephone
Two old flames out on the town
One still burns, and one's burned out
One's a couple baby,
Two's a crowd
They institutionalize people for actin' like I do
I'm drinkin' with somebody, that ain't in the room
Can't you see we're busy, trying to work our problems out?
One's a couple baby,
Two's a crowd
We came in here to be alone
No TV, no telephone
Two old flames out on the town
One still burns, and one's burned out
One's a couple baby,
Two's a crowd
We came in here to be alone
No TV, no telephone
Two old flames out on the town
One still burns, and one's burned out
One's a couple baby,
Two's a crowd
One's a couple baby,
Two's a crowd

It's a Cool Coo

I can't sleep at night,
'Cause I like to hear your voice...
Moan.
I hope you're there home alone.
And I'm tempted just to telephone.
I feel alone.

Just to hear you,
Moan.
And maybe get something going on!
Even if it's on the telephone.

The first time we did it,
It was good to me.
I didn't want to act,
Like you had me like that.
Or wanted you so quickly,
Back in my sack.
But you've got it going on.
And when you moan...
I've got to groan.

I wish you could be here...
To coo.
Like you coo when we move.
I love your cooin' when we do it...
It's a cool coo.

The first time we did it,
It was good to me.
I didn't want to act,
Like you had me like that.
Or wanted you so quickly,
Back in my sack.
But you've got it going on.
And when you moan...
I've got to groan.

I can't sleep at night,
'Cause I like to hear your voice...
Moan.
I hope you're there home alone.
And I'm tempted just to telephone.
I feel all alone.

I wish you could be here...
To coo.
Like you coo when we move...
And you coo coo.
Coo coo.
I love your cooin' when we do it...
It's a cool coo.

I wish you could be here...
To coo.
I love your cooin' when we do it...
It's a cool coo.
A good coo,
When we do it!

You Didn’t See

You didn’t see
the love in my eyes
and the hurt you caused
with your little lies.
You didn’t see
the breaking of my heart
every time you came home
and said we would have to part.
You didn’t see
what you were doing to me
as you spun your web of deceit
or how my life would ebb away
the minute you were gone.
You didn’t see
or didn’t want to see
how much you were hurting me.
How much love
you were willing just to toss away.
You didn’t see
until it was too late.

Telephone Blues

Telephone Blues
I couldn't sleep last night
I was sittin' by my telephone
All the time wastin'
All the love you've never shown
But someday, someday darlin'
You will realise I'm alone
The last time I saw you,
You promised me you'd come
But time is runnin' out babe
You never call at all
But life's so long babe
Sittin' by my telephone
But someday, someday darlin'
You will realise I'm alone

Sorry Wait

I just want to say I'm sorry
I'm sorry for everything I did
I'm sorry for what I didn't do
I'm sorry for being gone to long
I'm sorry I didn't fight harder for you

I'm sorry you had to grow up without me
I'm sorry you thought I didn't care
I'm sorry I didn't do all I could do
I'm sorry I didn't know where

I'm sorry, I can't change what I did
I'm sorry you got used to me being away
I'm sorry you don't want me to be
I'm sorry but I'm here to stay

I'm sorry for loving you so much
I just hope it's not to late
For you to try to forgive me
So I can end this Sorry Wait! !

0348 Me, Royalty and Fame

I didn't wave anything at the Queen
when I saw her leaving an official reception
sitting bolt upright in the car,
still, pale, exhausted,
on her way to the next engagement
of the five or so that day.

I didn't say much to the Queen Mum
when presented to her -
some people chat with royalty when introduced
like old friends; others, even the most anti-monarchical
turn to idiot jelly. But
she sure was good in dealing with it.
A pro to her fingertips.

I didn't say anything to Prince Charles
when he opened an exhibition
that he and I had an interest in;
but I'm proud to say we pushed
the greatest man in the room
into the receiving line
which otherwise he would not have sought.

I didn't say anything to Princess Diana
when at a reception I saw she'd spotted
the big red badge I'd been given and wore proudly -
'One of the nice things about New York';
I felt a fraud and slunk away.

I didn't say anything to the Prime Minister
when he invited me for tea -
the invitation got mislaid.

I didn't say anything to John and Yoko
when I met them at her first art exhibition -
since just looking is what art is for.

I didn't say anything to the Rolling Stones
when there they were sitting in a line
in the sunlight on the wall outside the National Gallery
before they were screaming-famous.

I didn't say much to Andy Warhol
since my question seemed to knock him backwards -
he leaned back, shrugged and said weakly
'It seemed a good idea at the time...'
then his minders hustled him on through the Andy Andy.

I didn't say much to Gloria Swanson
when some upmarket con unexpectedly
put me on the telephone to her
about her sculpture.

I didn't say anything to Marianne Faithfull
when she came in to the shop -
I was downstairs typing invoices at the time.

I didn't say anything to William Burroughs
when he was living in the flat above -
he didn't seem to want to talk.

I didn't say much to the Canadian Prime Minister
sitting next to him at that lavish banquet -
they'd changed Prime Ministers from the swinging one
between the invitation and the banquet.

And that's about it, really. The rest
of the time you can't stop me talking.

Spiderbite Song

When you got that spiderbite on your hand
I thought we would have to break up the band
To lose your arm would surely upset your brain
The poison then could reach your heart from a vein
I was glad that it didn't destroy you
How sad that would be
Cos if it destroyed you
It would destroy me
When you had that accident in your car
That whole thing just really seemed too bizarre
Dodging holes and telephone poles through the dash
A million to one that you could survive such a crash
I was glad that it didn't destroy you
How sad that would be
Cos if it destroyed you
It would destroy me
When you fell in love it was so sweet
So devoted, completely swept off your feet
Love is the greatest thing our heart can know
But the hole that it leaves in its absence can make you feel so low
I was glad that it didn't destroy you
How sad that would be
Cos if it destroyed you
It would destroy me

Shiranakatta

Shiranakatta, shiranakatta,
Shiranakatta, shiranakatta,
Tatta hitokoto ittekuretara
Sugunimo tonde itlanoni,
Shiranakatta, shiranakatta, shiranakatta,
J'aurais couru vers toi
Mais, je ne savais pas, je ne savais pas, je ne savais pas.
I didn't know, i didn't know,
I didn't know, i didn't know,
Why didn't you tell me you were in pain?
I would have come to you so quickly.
But i didn't know, i didn't know, i didn't know.
Feeling cold from fear of needing you,
Feeling faint from fear of wanting you.
But i didn't know, i didn't know,
I didn't know, i didn't know,
Why didn't you tell me you missed me, too?
I would have come to you so quickly.

Kissing Down The Telephone Line

With loving words,
we coo and dove to one another
over the telephone line.
Blowing kisses to one another
down the telephone.
Now tomorrow when we meet,
we’ll take them up for real
that’s if our mothers let us,
because you are only two

Don't Let It Get You Down

When the friends can't be found
And the girl is out of town
I come home to an empty house
The telephone is all I have
When my plans don't work out
Mama says, don't let it get you down
Don't let it get you down
There's a club I can't get it
Every week it's the same thing
I get mad I want to cry
it's my skin they don't like
When my plans don't work out
Mama says, don't let it get you down
Don't let it get you down
Now my world don't look good
Not the way I know it should
And my time is running short
I didn't do all I ought
When my plans don't work out
Mama says, don't let it get you down
Don't let it get you down
