I Will Not Fight

I will not fight: though proud of pith
I hold no one worth striving with;
And should resentment burn my breast
I deem that silence serves me best:
So having not a word to say,
Contemptuous I turn away.

I will not fret: my rest of life
Free I will keep from hate and strife;
Let lust and sin and anger sleep,
I will not delve the subsoil deep,
But be content with inch of earth,
Where daisies have their birth.

I will not grieve: Till day be done
I will be tranquil in the sun,
With garden glow and quiet nook,
And song of bird and spell of book . . .
God bless you all! I will not fight,
But love and dream until--Goodnight!

Fight

Sometimes there's nothing to feel
Sometimes there's nothing to hold
Sometimes there's no time to run away
Sometimes you just feel so old
The times it hurts when you cry
The times it hurts just to breathe
And then it all seems like there's no-one left
And all you want is to sleep
Fight fight fight
Just push it away
Fight fight fight
Just push until it breaks
Fight fight fight
Don't cry at the pain
Fight fight fight
Or watch yourself burn again
Fight fight fight
Don't howl like a dog
Fight fight
Just fill up the sky
Fight fight fight
Fight til you drop
Fight fight fight
And never never
Never stop
Fight fight fight
Fight fight fight
So when the hurting starts
And when the nightmares begin
Remember you can fill up the sky
You don't have to give in
You don't have to give in
Never give in
Never give in
Never give in

Tenderly you come

tenderly you come
to touch the locks of hair
that rest there on the pillow
feathered in a dream

i sleep my silence long
two words for its spell
and no silence for a word

you touch my face and line it
up in warmth through glass
that stands there instead of window
sundialed roomed so spacious

i sleep my silence long
two words for its spell
and no silence for a word

you open eyes of a closure
'neath unfaithful sky
to write me there word cloudward
wipe me away or melt

in my sleep silence long
two words for its spell
and no silence for a word

The Anxious Dead

O guns, fall silent till the dead men hear
Above their heads the legions pressing on:
(These fought their fight in time of bitter fear,
And died not knowing how the day had gone.)

O flashing muzzles, pause, and let them see
The coming dawn that streaks the sky afar;
Then let your mighty chorus witness be
To them, and Caesar, that we still make war.

Tell them, O guns, that we have heard their call,
That we have sworn, and will not turn aside,
That we will onward till we win or fall,
That we will keep the faith for which they died.

Bid them be patient, and some day, anon,
They shall feel earth enwrapt in silence deep;
Shall greet, in wonderment, the quiet dawn,
And in content may turn them to their sleep.

Breton Afternoon

Here, where the breath of the scented-gorse floats through the
sun-stained air,
On a steep hill-side, on a grassy ledge, I have lain hours long
and heard
Only the faint breeze pass in a whisper like a prayer,
And the river ripple by and the distant call of a bird.

On the lone hill-side, in the gold sunshine, I will hush me and
repose,
And the world fades into a dream and a spell is cast on me;
_And what was all the strife about, for the myrtle or the rose,
And why have I wept for a white girl's paleness passing ivory!_

Out of the tumult of angry tongues, in a land alone, apart,
In a perfumed dream-land set betwixt the bounds of life and death,
Here will I lie while the clouds fly by and delve an hole where my
heart
May sleep deep down with the gorse above and red, red earth beneath.

Sleep and be quiet for an afternoon, till the rose-white angelus
Softly steals my way from the village under the hill:
_Mother of God, O Misericord, look down in pity on us,
The weak and blind who stand in our light and wreak ourselves such ill_.

Which To Bury, Us Or The Hatchet (acoustic)

I think you know what I'm getting at
I find it so upsetting that
The memories that you select
You keep the bad but the good you just forget
And even though I'm angry I can still say
I know my heart will break the day
When you peel out and drive away
I can't believe this happened
And all this time I never thought
That all we had would be all for not
No, I don't hate you
Don't want to fight you
Know I'll always love you
But right now I just don't like you
Know I don't hate you
Don't want to fight you
Know I'll always love you
But right now I just don't like you
Cause you took this too far, too far
Make your decision and don't you dare think twice
Go with your instincts along with some bad advice
This didn't turn out the way I thought it would at all
You blame me but some of this is still your fault
I tried to move you
But you just wouldn't budge
I tried to hold your hand
But you'd rather hold your grudge
I think you know what I'm getting at
You said goodbye and I just don't want you regretting that
No, I don't hate you
Don't want to fight you
Know I'll always love you
But right now I just don't like you
Know I don't hate you
Don't want to fight you
Know I'll always love you
But right now I just don't like you
And wisdom always chooses
The black eyes and these bruises
Over the heartache that they say
Never completely goes away
(I just can't believe this happened
And one day we'll see this come around)
And wisdom always chooses
The black eyes and these bruises
Over the heartache that they say
Never completely goes away
No, I don't hate you
Don't want to fight you
Know I'll always love you
But right now I just don't like you
Know I don't hate you
Don't want to fight you
Know I'll always love you
But right now I just don't like you
Cause you took this too far
What happened to us
I heard that its me we should blame
What happened to us
Why didn't you stop me from turning out this way
And know that I don't hate you
And know that I don't want to fight you
And know that I'll always love you
But right now I just don't...

A Summer Ramble

The quiet August noon has come,
A slumberous silence fills the sky,
The fields are still, the woods are dumb,
In glassy sleep the waters lie.

And mark yon soft white clouds that rest
Above our vale, a moveless throng;
The cattle on the mountain's breast
Enjoy the grateful shadow long.

Oh, how unlike those merry hours
In early June when Earth laughs out,
When the fresh winds make love to flowers,
And woodlands sing and waters shout.

When in the grass sweet voices talk,
And strains of tiny music swell
From every moss-cup of the rock,
From every nameless blossom's bell.

But now a joy too deep for sound,
A peace no other season knows,
Hushes the heavens and wraps the ground,
The blessing of supreme repose.

Away! I will not be, to-day,
The only slave of toil and care.
Away from desk and dust! away!
I'll be as idle as the air.

Beneath the open sky abroad,
Among the plants and breathing things,
The sinless, peaceful works of God,
I'll share the calm the season brings.

Come, thou, in whose soft eyes I see
The gentle meanings of thy heart,
One day amid the woods with me,
From men and all their cares apart.

And where, upon the meadow's breast,
The shadow of the thicket lies,
The blue wild flowers thou gatherest
Shall glow yet deeper near thine eyes.

Come, and when mid the calm profound,
I turn, those gentle eyes to seek,
They, like the lovely landscape round,
Of innocence and peace shall speak.

Rest here, beneath the unmoving shade,
And on the silent valleys gaze,
Winding and widening, till they fade
In yon soft ring of summer haze.

The village trees their summits rear
Still as its spire, and yonder flock
At rest in those calm fields appear
As chiselled from the lifeless rock.

One tranquil mount the scene o'erlooks--
There the hushed winds their sabbath keep
While a near hum from bees and brooks
Comes faintly like the breath of sleep.

Well may the gazer deem that when,
Worn with the struggle and the strife,
And heart-sick at the wrongs of men,
The good forsakes the scene of life;

Like this deep quiet that, awhile,
Lingers the lovely landscape o'er,
Shall be the peace whose holy smile
Welcomes him to a happier shore.

Hold On To Your Dream

In life we have our pains and sorrows
Face mountains we think we can't climb
Nothing can there's always tomorrow
You feel like giving up, you say you're out of luck
But then you hear a voice in your mind
Telling you to
Hold on to your dream
Cause they're always worth having
Hold on to your dream
Like a father to his son
Don't let anyone ever steal your joy from you
Hold on to your dream
till the day that life is said and done
This world is filled peaks and valleys
With rivers we think we can't cross
To busy keeping sorrows telling
You say you're at you're in
You say you never win
But then a light comes on in your mind
Till you
Hold on to your dream
Cause they're always worth having
Hold on to your dream
Like a father to his son
Don't let anyone ever steal your joy from you
Hold on to your dream
Until the day that life is said and done
If you wanna hold on to something
You better hold on to your dreams
If you want to hold on to something
You've gotta hold to your love
To your love
So if they try to burst your bubble
It's cons they haven't done em all
And when you feel you are in trouble
Hold your head up high and feel your heart inside
And know that you are never alone
Just as long as you
Hold on to your dream
Cause they're always worth having
Hold on to your dream
Like a father to his son
Don't let anyone ever steal your joy from you
Hold on to your dream
till the day that life is said and done
Hold on to your dream
Cause they're always worth having
Hold on to your dream
Like a mother to her child
Don't let anyone ever steal your dreams from you
Hold on to your dream
And do your best to always wear a smile
Hold on to your dream

Can't Fight Love

MIDDLE 8
See I'm the one that loves you
She never deserved you
Sorry if it hurts now
But I've gotta have you
This might end our friendship
The chance I'm gonna take it
If you feel the same way I know we're gonna make it
VERSE 1
Would she take your coat
When you come in from out the rain?
Would she hold your hand again
If it eased away your pain?
Would she try her best
To give you room to grow?
Or would it all just be a show
Or could it all just be in vain?
CHORUS
You can't fight love
You can't fight love
Don't you turn and walk away
Cos I thought I heard you say
You lost it time and time again
You can't fight love
No you can't fight love
You can't buy it on a shelf
You should look for no-one else
Nobody but myself
VERSE 2
I've been standing by
In a silence I have cried
Longing to hold you in the night
But I never spoke a word
But all the love in me
Can't reveal the way I feel
But when I tell you what's inside
Don't you run away for miles
CHORUS
You can't fight love
You can't fight love
Don't you turn and walk away
Cos I thought I heard you say
You lost it time and time again
You can't fight love
No you can't fight love
You can't buy it on a shelf
You should look for no-one else
Nobody but myself

I Am in Need of Music

I am in need of music that would flow
Over my fretful, feeling fingertips,
Over my bitter-tainted, trembling lips,
With melody, deep, clear, and liquid-slow.
Oh, for the healing swaying, old and low,
Of some song sung to rest the tired dead,
A song to fall like water on my head,
And over quivering limbs, dream flushed to glow!

There is a magic made by melody:
A spell of rest, and quiet breath, and cool
Heart, that sinks through fading colors deep
To the subaqueous stillness of the sea,
And floats forever in a moon-green pool,
Held in the arms of rhythm and of sleep.

Garden Song

This song appears on three albums, and was first released on the john denver album, and has also been released on the voice of america and the country roads collection albums.
Inch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe
And a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row
Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
Till the rain comes tumblin down
Pullin weeds and pickin stones
Man is made of dreams and bones
Feel the need to grow my own
Cause the time is close at hand
Rainful rain, sun and rain
Find my way in natures chain
Tune my body and my brain
To the music from the land
Plant your rows straight and long
Temper them with prayer and song
Mother earth will make you strong
If you give her love and care
Old crow watchin hungrily
From his perch in yonder tree
In my garden Im as free
As that feathered thief up there

Goodnight My Friend

Goodnight my sun
Goodnight my friend
Rest your soul at this
Long days end
The fire inside
Will warm our night
And daddys arms will
Hold you tight
Dream of summer skies
Sunset is bound to each sunrise
Rest is your first right
My friend goodnight
This world spinning
Time always winning
The silver chains keep thinning and
This is just your beginning
Sleep my friend
At last be free
No we wont forget
Our merriest melody
Gone to another place
Of carousel rides round an angels face
Im sure wed both laugh at the sight
My friend goodnight

Do you have dreams?

Do you have dreams, Well I do
I dream of wonderful things
I dream of things yet to come
I dream of things some may say is dumb
I dream of love not just the word I mean real love
I dream of of a place where there is no war
I dream of a good answer to what we fight for
I dream of floating in the clouds free with no worry
I dream of a president who can just say sorry
I dream of reading a book thats begins with 'what is hate'
I dream of a country, thats completely great
I dream of life beyond the one we live today
I dream of a time when all kids do is learn and play
Ok time to wake up to reality
I was loving my dream now im mad at me for waking up
Life here in the real world can be so crazy
I guess the bigger part of me wishes I was stil a baby
Some of my dreams may come true
I know thats not true and so do you
But I will continue to believe my dream will come true
Because my dream was so wonderful, so I shared it with you

Epilogue to Asolando

At the midnight in the silence of the sleep-time,
When you set your fancies free,
Will they pass to where―by death, fools think, imprisoned―
Low he lies who once so loved you, whom you loved so,
―Pity me?

Oh to love so, be so loved, yet so mistaken!
What had I on earth to do
With the slothful, with the mawkish, the unmanly?
Like the aimless, helpless, hopeless, did I drivel!
―Being―who?

One who never turned his back but marched breast forward,
Never doubted clouds would break,
Never dreamed, though right were worsted, wrong would triumph,
Held we fall to rise, are baffled to fight better,
Sleep to wake.

No, at noonday in the bustle of man’s work-time
Greet the unseen with a cheer!
Bid him forward, breast and back as either should be,
‘Strive and thrive!’ cry, ‘Speed,―fight on, fare ever
There as here!’

The Wood-Spring To The Poet

Dawn-cool, dew-cool
Gleams the surface of my pool
Bird haunted, fern enchanted,
Where but tempered spirits rule;
Stars do not trace their mystic lines
In my confines;
I take a double night within my breast
A night of darkened heavens, a night of leaves,
And in the two-fold dark I hear the owl
Puff at his velvet horn
And the wolves howl.
Even daylight comes with a touch of gold
Not overbold,
And shows dwarf-cornel and the twin-flowers,
Below the balsam bowers,
Their tints enamelled in my dew-drop shield.
Too small even for a thirsty fawn
To quench upon,
I hold my crystal at one level
There where you see the liquid bevel
Break in silver and go free
Singing to its destiny.

Give, Poet, give!
Thus only shalt thou live.
Give! for 'tis thy joyous doom
To charm, to comfort, to illume.

Speak to the maiden and the child
With accents deep and mild,
Tell them of the world so wide
In words of wonder and pure pride,
Touched with the rapture of surprise
That dwells in a child angel's eyes,
Awed with the strangeness of new-birth,
When the flaming seraph sent
To lead him into Paradise,
Calls his name with the mother's voice
He has just ceased to hear on earth.

Give to the youth his heart's content,
But power with prudence blent,
Thicken his sinews with love,
With courage his heart prove,
Till over his spirit shall roll
The vast wave of control.
In the cages and dens of strife,
Where men draw breath
Thick with a curse at the dear thing called life,
Give them courage to bear,
Strength to aspire and dare;
Give them hopes rooted in stone,
That the loveliest flowers take on,
Bind on their brows with a gesture free
The palm green bays of liberty.

Give to the mothers of men
The knowledge of joy in pain,
Give them the sense of reward
That grew in the breast of the Lord
On the dawn of the seventh morn;
For 'tis they who re-create the world
Whenever a child is born.

Give, Poet, give!
Give them songs that charm and fill
The soul with an alluring pleasure,
Prelusive to a deeper thrill,
A richer tone, a fuller measure;
Like voices, veiled with hidden treasure,
Of angels on a windy morning,
That first far off, then all together,
Come with a glorious clarion calling;
And when they swoon beneath the spell
Recapture them to hear the echoes
Falling--falling--falling.

To those stoned for the truth
Give ruth;
Give manna for the mourner's mouth
Sovereign as air;
For his heart's drouth
A prayer.

Give to dead souls that mock at life
Aweary of their cankered hearts,
Weary of sleep and weary of strife,
Weary of markets and of arts,--
Helve them a song of life,
Two-edged with joyous life,
Tempered trusty with life,
Proud pointed with wild life,
Plunge it as lightning plunges,
Stab them to life!

Give to those who grieve in secret,
Those who bear the sorrows of earth,
The deep unappeasable longings
Which beset them with throngings and throngings,
(As, on a windless night,
Through the fold of a dark mantle furled,
Gleams on our world, world after unknown world)
Give them peace,
Wide as the veil that hides God's face,
The pure plenitude of space,
In which our universe is but a glittering crease,--
Give them such peace.

Give, Poet, give!
Thus only shalt thou live:
Give as we give who are hidden
In myriad dimples of rock and fern;
Give as we give unbidden
To tarn and rillet and burn,
Where the lake dreams,
Where the fall is hurled,
Striving to sweeten
The oceans of the world.

Should my song for a moment cease,
Silence fall in the woodland peace;
Should I wilfully check the flow
Bubbling and dancing up from below;
Say to my heart be still--be still,
Let the murmur die with the rill;
Then should the glittering, grey sea-things
Sigh as they wallow the under springs;
Where the deep brine-pools used to lie
Deserts vast would stare at the sky,
And even thy rich heart
(O Poet, Poet!)
Even thy rich heart run dry.

Open Arms

Guess Ive got a lot of learning to do
About the way that you love.
If it had been left up to me,
Id given up a long time ago.
But youve got a way of wooing me,
Tender and true,
And though I dont deserve it,
Im falling into your
Open arms.
Your love has taken hold,
And I cant fight it;
Im giving in to your
Open arms.
They pull me to you;
They wrap your love around me;
Ill rest in your open arms.
Only yesterday the thought came the to me,
Is your love as deep as they say?
Wonder where those questions come from.
Soon as I learn, Ill chase them away.
cause Ive had a taste of tenderness,
Simple and true,
It drives away the doubting
And draws me into your
Open arms.
Your love has taken hold,
And I cant fight it.
Im giving in to your
Open arms.
They pull me to you;
They wrap your love around me;
Ill rest in your open arms.
Open arms.
Your love has taken hold,
And I cant fight it.
Im giving in to your
Open arms.
They pull me to;
They wrap your love around me;
Ill rest in your open,
Open arms.
Your love has taken hold,
And I cant fight it.
Im giving in to your
Open arms.
They pull me to you;
They wrap your love around me;
Ill rest in your open...(open arms).
I know, I know, I know,
And I cant fight it.
Im giving in to your
Open arms.
They pull me to;
They wrap love around me;
Ill rest in your open arms (open arms).

Whatever You Want

what would it take
to turn your heart my way
to move you with each word that i say
'cause i just want to learn
and i just want to know
i just want to hold you baby forever
chances like these are seldom and few
and this is one chance i'm not going to lose
so forgive my emotions for speaking out loud
but every time you're around i won't say
whatever you want
just say the words
i'd buy you the stars
for whatever they're worth
to spell out this love across the universe
i'll do whatever you want
you can swear upon this love
for whatever you want

just one kiss
would seal our fate
just one chance is all it takes
so open your soul
and let me in
it's up to you baby
to let this love begin

whatever you want
just say the words
i'd buy you the stars
for whatever they're worth
to spell out this love across the universe
i'll do whatever you want
you can swear upon this love
for whatever you want

you're the dream
i've been waiting for
in a world where dreams are fleeting
your love is a miracle
that my soul been needing

whatever you want
just say the words
i'd buy you the stars
for whatever they're worth
to spell out this love across the universe
i'll do whatever you want
you can swear upon this love
for whatever you want

whatever you want
just say the words
i'd buy you the stars
for whatever they're worth
to spell out this love across the universe
i'll do whatever you want
you can swear upon this love
for whatever you want
whatever you
