Maddox Table

[ music: natalie merchant/lyric: natalie merchant ]
The legs of maddox kitchen tables
My whole life twisted on a lathe
In a foremans torrent
My first english was
Faster boy if you want your pay
Barking commands
Loud and simple
We could all obey
Then I was forever pulling silvers
Rubbed the sawdust always
Deeper in my eye
Varnish vapor that could linger
On my skin
It held tight
The whine of spinning blades
Still echoes to bother my sleep at night
See that ox
Stamped dead center
On the letter head of the company mail
Four decades a spitting image
Of the animal I portrayed
At maddox table a yoke was carved
For my neck
Sun through the window oil spattered
And in mason jars
Tricked plenty seeds thrive
The standing joke
Around the shop was
With my green thumb
Anythingd grow
My part was to laugh
Show and ornery jig had
Cut it at the knuckle bone
See that ox
Trade mark burned
Into every stick of furniture
From horn to tail
Four decades a spitting image
Of the animal I portrayed
At maddox table a yoke was carved
For my neck
Was tailor made
O my dolly was a weak
Not a burdened girl
Treat her to a piece of vaudville
A wintergarden moving picture show
Bemus point on july sundays
By trolley wed go
To your benefit wes strike or bargain
With the waving fist a union man
Not just for
Smokes spirits candy and cologne
But for
Automobile keys
Cash in the bank
And the deed
On a place called home

Rednecks

Last night I saw lester maddox on a tv show
With some smart-ass new york jew
And the jew laughed at lester maddox
And the audience laughed at lester maddox too
Well, he may be a fool but hes our fool
If they think theyre better than him theyre wrong
So I went to the park and I took some paper along
And thats where I made this song
We talk real funny down here
We drink too much and we laugh too loud
Were too dumb to make it in no northern town
And were keepin the niggers down
We got no-necked oilmen from texas
And good ol boys from tennessee
And colleges men from lsu
Went in dumb - come out dumb too
Hustlin round atlanta in their alligator shoes
Gettin drunk every weekend at the barbecues
And theyre keepin the niggers down
Chorus
Were rednecks, rednecks
And we dont know our ass from a hole in the ground
Were rednecks, were rednecks
And were keeping the niggers down
Now your northern niggers a negro
You see hes got his dignity
Down here were too ignorant to realize
That the north has set the nigger free
Yes hes free to be put in a cage
In harlem in new york city
And hes free to be put in a cage in the south-side of chicago
And the west-side
And hes free to be put in a cage in hough in cleveland
And hes free to be put in a cage in east st. louis
And hes free to be put in a cage in fillmore in san francisco
And hes free to be put in a cage in roxbury in boston
Theyre gatherin em up from miles around
Keepin the niggers down
Chorus

Eat For Two

[ music: natalie merchant/words: natalie merchant ]
O, baby blankets and baby shoes, baby slippers, baby spoons, walls of baby blue.
Dream child in my head is a nightmare born in a borrowed bed.
Now I know lightning strikes again.
It struck me once, then struck me dead.
My folly grows inside of me.
I eat for two, walk for two, breathe for two now.
Well, the egg man fell down off his shelf.
All the good kings men with all their help struggled til the end for a shell they couldnt mend.
You know where this will lead, to hush and rock in the nursery for the kicking one inside of me.
I eat for two, walk for two, breathe for two now.
When the boy was a boy, the girl was a girl, they found each other in a wicked world.
Strong in some respects, but she couldnt stand for the way he begged and gave in.
Pride is for men; young girls should run and hide instead.
Risk the game by taking dares with yes.
Eat for two, walk for two, breathe for two now.
Walk for two? Im stumbling.
Breathe for two? I cant breathe.
Five months , how it grows.
Five months now, I begin to show.

Religious Table

A table wooden to the bone cushions my side of the bone,
Tables and chairs, chairs and tables work hands and feet.
My real furnished appearance stages a welcome,
By talismans so religious and bold, and also stronger than the furniture.
The bones of a skeleton are brittle when time takes time,
Bone is sacred, bone is like a table of splendid nature.
My body is furnished with eyes and ears, faces so dear,
Letting light be knightly on the skin, with skin and skin.
The bones of religion collect by night and day,
Relics of the past demand recollection, everyday.

Everyday Life And Chocolate

Everyday life and Chocolate.

A sweet shop in the middle of nowhere, I had bought a box of chocolate,
but had no money, the owner took my sack of hay given to me by a farmer
to make a mattress, as payment. Now I sleep on top of a big kitchen table
for fear of rats. When I get up at night to drink water, I can hear them
hissing under the floor board. The candy man’s daughter is dying, she has
always been in love with her image and can’t bear the thought of parting.
from her mirror. Last night I fell off the kitchen table, dreamed I was back
at sea and my ship was pitching and rolling, bet it gave the rats a fright.
The phone rang it was my mother, couldn’t hear what she said, bad line
between heaven and earth. Went to the candy man’s daughter’s funeral
the casket was decorated with colourful sweets and expensive chocolate,
the sermon was light hearted the priest looked as he was on a high. I don’t
eat chocolate anymore, but live on raw carrots. So slim you are fat people
tell me; my diet is carrots I say and the rush to the green grocer to buy some,
but they continue to eat sweets. Things are looking up the farmer gave me
another sack of hay and a rat catching terrier, and every morning it puts
the night’s catch on the kitchen table.

Don't push me around
Don't bring my head down

Animal Boy

I'm not an imbecile
Don't treat me like an animal
I'm not a creature in the zoo
Don't tell me what to do

Animal Boy

You don't know what it's like
You don't know how I feel
I don't have a monkey's brain
I'm not an animal

You can't lock me in a cage
This ain't the Stoneage
Better get out of my way
Someone's gonna have to pay

Animal Farm

This world is big and wild and half insane
Take me where real animals are playing
Just a dirty old shack
Where the hound dogs bark
That we called our home
I want to be back there
Among the cats and dogs
And the pigs and the goats
On animal farm
My animal home
On animal farm
My animal home
While I lay my head upon my pillow
Little girl, come play beneath my window
Though shes far from home
She is free from harm
And she need not fear
She is by my side
And the sky is wide
So let the sun shine bright
On animal farm
My animal home
On animal farm
My animal home
Girl, its a hard, hard world, if it gets you down
Dreams often fade and die in a bad, bad world
Ill take you where real animals are playing
And people are real people not just playing
Its a quiet, quiet life
By a dirty old shack
That we called our home
I want to be back there
Among the cats and dogs
And the pigs and the goats
On animal farm
My animal home
On animal farm
My animal home
On animal farm
Animal farm

Since I Fell For You

(buddy johnson)
Reba:
When you just give love
Natalie:
And never get love
Reba:
You better let love be part
Natalie:
I know that its so
And yeah I know
Reba:
I cant get you out of my heart
Natalie:
You, you, you, you, you, you
You make me leave my happy home
You took my love and now youre gone, gone, gone, gone, gone
Since I fell for you
Oh yeah
Reba:
Oh love
Natalie:
(sing reba)
Reba:
Brings such misery and pain
I guess Ill never
Oh I guess Ill never be the same
Since I fell for you
Natalie:
(I gotta say this right here)
Well, well its too bad
Reba:
Oh its too bad
Natalie:
Oh and its too sad
Reba:
Oh its too sad
Natalie:
But Im in love, Im in love with you
Natalie:
Oh oh, you love me
Reba:
Oh you loved me
Natalie:
And then you snubbed me
Reba:
You bad boy
Natalie:
Oh but what can I do
Im still in love with you
Reba:
I, I guess Ill never see the light
Natalie:
Never gonna see the light
Reba:
I get the blues I get the blues most every night
Since I fell for you
Natalie:
Oh come on come on come on tell them about it
Reba:
Oh its too bad
Natalie:
Its too bad
Reba:
And its too sad
Natalie:
Oh its much too sad
Reba:
Cause Im still in love with you
Reba:
You loved me
Natalie:
Oh you love me
Reba:
Then you snubbed me
Natalie:
Oh then you snubbed me baby
Reba:
Oh what can I do
Im still in love with you
Reba:
I, I guess Ill never see the light
Natalie:
Never, never, never, never
I get the blues most every single night
Since i, since I fell, since I fell for you
Both:
Since I fell for you

Lack of evidence

Late last night I found a significant piece of evidence of you -
evidence of your past existance
i found it odd how little i cared, but how much i still remembered.
i have no pictures of you, only those in my head
i often dream about you, but when i wake up i no longer remember what you look like
silly and repetitive i catch my image in the mirror
you name still etched in my naked skin like a branding - of a caged animal
an animal DYING to be free
but thats just the case, no matter how free an animal may appear, one who's been branded really only means they are owned by someone or something.
i'm branded - for life
but i never was and never will be yours................. ever again

Spiritual Lessons From Natalie

'I'm so glad you are on the planet' was the message left,
It was on my birthday, it was a nice gift.
It was from Natalie who helped me with life,
she had developed energy skills to deal with strife.
I worked with her on my programs to remove,
remove from my aura and give me a better groove.
She answered questions about God which was great,
I confirmed in 'Conversations With God' as of late.
Now I know I have learned and grown,
life makes sense from conversations on the phone.
Natalie was always there for me on a dime
she called right back-she made the time.
I always felt better once knew why
Natalie knew a lot about karma and life.
Natalie is committed to bring in the Golden Age
it read about it on Natalie's new web page.
Thank you Natalie for being there for me
you helped me grow and bring me more peace.

Held Up With Just A Stick

Held up with just a stick.
Held up with just a stick.
Held up with just a stick.
Held up with just a stick.

Held up with just a stick,
It seems...
Held up with just a stick,
One's head...
Held up with just a stick,
Their arms and their legs...
Needing to be fed.

And...
Held up with just a stick,
One's pride...
Held up with just a stick,
Two eyes and two ears...
Living poverty so near,
To...
Famish it is clear.

And...
Held up with just a stick,
Hunger.
Held up with just a stick,
Life!
Held up with just a stick,
Blight!
And those who fight death in their sight.

Held up with just a stick,
Life!
Held up with just a stick,
Pride!
Held up with just a stick,
Blight!
And those who fight death in their sight.

Held up with just a stick,
And...
There's no benefit to it.

Held up with just a stick,
Life!
Held up with just a stick,
Pride!
Held up with just a stick,
Blight!
And living this is NOT a gift.

Held up with just a stick,
And...
There's no benefit to it.

Held up with just a stick.
Held up with just a stick.
Held up with just a stick.
Held up with just a stick.

Animal

Bound to a table
Poked with a stick
Treated like an animal
Treat for a trick
Disturbed thoughts rumble
Transcending instinctual ties
Madness binds with us
Each of us live our lives
Days turn to years
Fire turns to ash
The forest meets you at the piers
With your soul in its grasp
Forbear the brittle
And carry on strong
For life comes not to those who are little
But abounds for those whose stride is long
Victim for victim
Blow for blow
How much of the animal in you
Will you allow to show?

What can I say of myself

What can I say of myself
That others has said of me
Even though they were always wrong
No, I do not grow a tail at night
No, monkeys have straight hair not I
They say that I abandon
My children for a jail cell in the company of men
They do not know that I do not hate my dark skin
It is the money of whites, their power
That denies me; keep me in the yoke of self hatred
They fear my power to survive
It is greater then their to enslave
Financially and sexually as is the American way
By my black American culture am I made brave
They think that I want their daughters and sons
To bring then over to the beautiful dark side
As they are entice by the art of being black
They want me to mount them to bring
Them closer to the animal that we all are
To praise me they say that I am to articulate to be black
And they want to know if this is my real hair
And they call my skull cap a doo rag
They tell me that they too love fried chicken
And watermelon and can get down with some corn bread and collard green
With smoked ham hocks or neck bones
They want to know why I am so angry
As a black man who should be prove to be born an American
And why I am acting white when I dress preppy
Why don’t I sound black over the phone
They want to know why I eat pig feet
They say that I should get over slavery
But not that the Jews should get over the Holocaust
They want to touch my hair
Their women folks are quick to commit crimes
And blame it on a black man
They think that the lighter my skin color
The less dangerous and friendlier I am.
They tell me that I got rhythm

Ringfinger

Well youve got me working so heard lately.
Working my hands until they bleed.
If I was twice the man I could be.
Id still be half of what you need
Still you lead me and I follow
Anything you ask you know Ill do.
But this one act of consecration is what I ask of you
Ringfinger.
Promise carved in stone.
Deeper than the sea.
Ringfinger.
Sever flesh and bone
And offer it to me.
You just left me nailed here.
Hanging like jesus on the cross.
Ill be dying for your sins.
And aiding to the cause.
Ringfinger.
Promise carved in stone.
Deeper than the sea.
Ringfinger.
Sever flesh and bone
And offer it to me.
Wrap my eyes in bandages.
Confessions I see through.
I get everything I want.
When I get part of you.
Ringfinger.
Promise carved in stone.
Deeper than the sea.
Ringfinger.
Sever flesh and bone
And offer it to me.
Ringfinger.
Promise carved in stone.
Deeper than the sea.
Ringfinger.
Devils flesh and bone
Do something for me.

Home Sweet Home

Met this girl called josephine and took her up on my machine
We had a little fun and now we got a little one
Had to get married, being chased out of town
Found ourselves a place to live, we put all our money down
Call it home sweet home, home sweet home
Eleven floors up in a tower block
Happy just to have a home
Ive gone and changed the lock on our home
Nothing really worked out right, things got broke,
They stayed that way
None of our friends came around at night and little sam got
No place to play
Weve got to get out of here, bill she said Ive been telling
You all the while
When I came home from work that night shed jumped out the
Window with our chiled
From our home sweet home, home sweet home
Just a place to take a rest, just a place ot make our nest
-- we call it our home
When the insurance money came through seemed dirty didnt
Know what to do
Took the cash went down the casino, down on the wheel
On the double
And I won, oh yes I won, like I never won before
Bought myself a country house with an antique carved
Oak door
It was home sweet home, home sweet home
Just a place to lay our head think of all those things we said
About in our home sweet home.

In silence I sit
In silence I scream
I miss the days of laughs

Now I sit in silence

Not A Story!

The needle sharp spikes can poke and puncture,
The subtle young skin, it entered quietly to adventure,
Below the blouse and on the stomach, crawling upward,
At The place of worship, where everyone was quiet and downward,
Hundreds of pins started to prick slowly and steadily,
Could not move and scream for help as It was the house of God,
Spitting the bitter fluid on its way, below the pinafore,
It made the victorious journey to the neck to smell and sneer,
When the warden dismissed and everyone was out,
She separated her hands that were clasped at the chest,
To retrieve the visitor from the back of the neck,
It was a green caterpillar with pins and spikes,
Everyone was shocked to see the trail mark,
From the stomach to the ten years old young neck's back,
She has learned the lesson of patience on that day,
And let soon to be a butterfly on the young leaves.
