At The Extreme
at the extreme
coldness is the coldness of the arctic snow
and hotness is the hotness of the volcanic flow
he got them all and he survived them all
his palms know what are all these things all about
but he never stopped touching
he touched the rays of the sun at noon
with his hands opening in prayer
he touched the frost with his fingers
he disliked his fists
he opted more for the silence of the dusks
and the patience of some longer nights
at the extremes of seasons and events
he continued talking to the trees and all its leaves
to his horse to his dog to his door
to his chair to his bed
to his stair
he kept his prayers
He lives. He is very much alive. His solitude his nest.
His prayers shaped the wings of a white bird.
His stone his silence. His strength, his spirit.

Winter With a Question
The aging trees will creak and groan
To find themselves ringed by frost in sleep
And snow by the wind already blown
Cast upon snow already deep.
The cold is echoed only by silence all,
And the leaves of Autumn entombed in white
At the place where leaves fall
And passing time, vanish from sight.
Who is it that judges these—
Sends leaves beneath the snow
And trees to shiver alongside trees? —
And where do they go?

For Meggie In Friendship
There is a young woman,
who lives so far away from me;
if she lived closer,
I could give her a big hug.
We came across one another,
not very long ago,
since then she has touched
my heart and soul
with her poems and prayers.
She held out the hand of friendship
as I held mine out to her,
we both accepted gratefully,
and two distant lives were touched
from half way a world away.
That bond of friendship gets stronger
with every poem and prayer that we write.
Maybe we will never meet in person,
but that does not matter at all.
Because through our words
the world has shrunk,
and it is as if she
is living right next door.
That if we reached out
our hands would touch
as our words have done before.
This poem was written
in friendship for a very special friend
Meggie Gultiano.

She Brought Them All Kindly To Her Grave
of course i know what coldness is
apart from something that is cool
when mother died her hands were extremely cold
for my hold
i let them go
there was no sadness
there was that happiness of letting her rest
and giving myself a little space
for tomorrow
when coldness comes again in an empty room
with open windows
i know not what panic shall be
my hands are extremely cold these days
when i kiss them
my lips become frozen
they break like glasses
i cannot speak
there is no way that my tongue shall give in to
words
it cannot face coldness in the mirror
of my face
since you ask and you demand an explanation i open my hands
and i let your hands touch them
i cannot speak i am afraid i will be cruel
you must hold these extreme coldness for a long time
so you can all let them go
like white birds against a dark sky
so you can also experience what happiness
i had when i let go off
mama's fears
when mama closed her eyes
because what was important she knew
need not be said anymore
she brought them all kindly to her grave

A Simple Touch!
you touched my hand,
and raised this body
from the land of the dead...
you touched my heart,
and freed this soul
from the dark maze
of its own prison.
you touched my eyes,
and restored sight
to a blind man.
you touched my ears,
and filled them with
the song of every living creature.
you touched my desire,
and brought stone and fire,
and the echo of the whipporwill's song.
i touched you,
and the earth stopped turning,
rivers stopped flowing,
and mountains fell...
all in a simple touch!

Defining The Kind Of Silence He Needs
it is like the silence of an empty room
not keeping anything
not holding
not gripping hands
or gnashing teeth
the windows are not closed
or the doors
to keep a hounding silence
it is a silence with still air
you hear me breathing in
and out
of my nostrils
nothing kept like grudges
nothing hidden like
some disappointments
it is the silence that heals
that gathers strength
the silence of your gratitude
the silence that rests
the silence
of the soul in solitude
the silence of peace
one that looks out
to the grandeur yet to come
one that waits patiently
the silence of
glory
godlike
humane, and seeks to understand
the one that drives
confusion away
like a bird
nesting its eggs for days
on a stable branch

The Earth And Myself...
as i lay my body
upon the grass
coldness seeps
in my garment
then to my skin
penetrating my
body
into the recesses
of my brain
it is the logic
and emotion conjoining
like twins
there is this coldness
that i allow
somehow
from the earth
to my spine
to my heart
it comforts me
that we are still connected
the warmth of my flesh
and blood
into the silence and
coldness of
this Earth.

Unanswered Prayers
Like some school master, kind in being stern,
Who hears the children crying o’er their slates
And calling, “Help me master! ” yet helps not,
Since in his silence and refusal lies
Their self-development, so God abides
Unheeding many prayers. He is not deaf
To any cry sent up from earnest hearts,
He hears and strengthens when He must deny.
He sees us weeping over life’s hard sums
But should He give us the key and dry our tears
What would it profit us when school were done
And not one lesson mastered?
What a world
Where this if all our prayers were answered. Not
In famed Pandora’s box were such vast ills
As lie in human hearts. Should our desires
Voiced one by one in prayer ascend to God
And come back as events shaped to our wish
What chaos would result!
In my fierce youth
I sighed out a breath enough to move a fleet
Voicing wild prayers to heaven for fancied boons
Which were denied; and that denial bends
My knee to prayers of gratitude each day
Of my maturer years. Yet from those prayers
I rose always regirded for the strife
And conscious of new strength. Pray on, sad heart,
That which thou pleadest for may not be given
But in the lofty altitude where souls
Who supplicate God’s grace are lifted there
Thou shalt find help to bear thy daily lot
Which is not elsewhere found.

A prayer for a Lost Loved One
Silence is no silence,
fear engulfs loved ones,
voices in heads pray,
for safety of a lost one.
No news is no sign of good news;
tears roll down; down to the ground,
shakes and anger circling ascends
in and out like breathing.
Silence is no silence,
fear engulfs loved ones,
voices in heads pray,
for safety of a lost one.
Fury rises with the sun,
and stays behind with the moon.
Silent stares, lone figures
Walk up down, awaiting news. And…
No news is no sign of good news;
tears roll down; down to the ground,
shakes and anger circling ascends
in and out like breathing.
Simper a cuddle no longer possible-
weight lose, gray hallow face
sleepless, reckless nights of
curving streaking worry.
Silence is no silence,
fear engulfs loved ones,
voices in heads pray,
for safety of a lost one.
No sign, sun shines; wondering thoughts,
to the safety of a child
tears of fear, sadness, rain falls
on ovals – fear rises and…
No news is no sign of good news;
tears roll down; down to the ground,
shakes and anger circling ascends
in and out like breathing.
Communities worry, grief, feel
And hold lost ones together-
Give and build strength,
Prayers whisper from door to door.
Silence is no silence,
fear engulfs loved ones,
voices in heads pray,
for safety of a lost one.
Water rolls silently, hands folded,
head bent in silence for prayer.
Whispers of trees blow, blow to the distance
Reveals simper cuddles.
Hands folded,
head bent,
silent prayer, for lost loved one.
Silence is no silence,
fear engulfs loved ones,
voices in heads pray,
for safety of a lost one.

Prayer Warriors
We are the prayer warriors and we say the prayers
For all the people for whom we care.
It matters not the position you’re in
If you’re good or if you sinned.
We all need prayers some time in our lives
Especially when things don’t turn out right.
When you’re sick or in despair
The prayer warriors are always there.
You pray for me as I pray for you
And all our prayers will come true.
We do not have to be gathered
As a group when we pray.
In a church, a temple, in a steeple
He listens to all of us, for we are his people.
They say there is strength when we gather in prayer
A common belief that we all share.
So let us pray for our fellow man
Because he now needs a helping hand.
So father we thank you for the blessings each day
And helping all who come your way.

At Night When The Air Comes
at night i hear the coming of the air
hushing,
i feel the touch of its fingers
that is why
i understand coldness
and patience
and ultimately the life of
silence
short and too concise
brief and frank
and candid and yes, sometimes
it can be so cruel.

To A Young Writer
i surf the faces of young writers
this one: bites his pencil and wanting to smile at the same time
(how could he do both?)
the other girl on the right side of the hall
with bangs is fat, chinky eyed,
wearing blue jeans
and collarless white shirt
she stares at the PowerPoint
four stones above each other
and on top a butterfly, a metaphor for transformation
each stone is a virtue
to achieve a pillar
soon,
the guy wants time to have wings
the girl breaks into laughter
he says he imagines feathers around his body
she breaks into laughter again
her point is: birds are not metaphors anymore
his point: she is numb, and she does not think anymore
awareness, silence, stone silence
pointlessly thoughts are useless with what is there
it is there already and all we can do is just see, feel, observe
and be touched by the hands of time
the body of language, the fingers of compassion, the strangled hair of doubt
spangled stars and running stripes
the eagle that ate all the stars
the apple that did not like the eight rays of the sun
i am tired this early morning.
Breakfast is served.

Prayers Have Wings You Know
prayers have wings you know
it takes its time and moves slow
but each and every prayer is heard
though you may not hear a word.
the prayers are taken by our guardian angels
to the lord up above
who reads each one with caring and love.
he then puts it in the order received
and then satisfies every ones needs.
so when you say your prayers, day or night
it never leaves gods hearing or sight.
he is there to satisfy our needs
as long as we don't get that greed.
prayers (do) have wings you know
they do not stay in that place called limbo
where they can't be reached.
they are sometimes put in a box
that says incoming mail.
on this the angels do not fail.
so with this thought in mind
i'll leave you untill next time

Hands
Untouched bed sheets
Oblivion morn
Untouched bed sheets
Spell betrayed
Silence broken mute
Who slept this heart
Who lost this soul
Sleeping in
Untouched bed sheets
A certain shadow
Talks
To tables shelves and dresses
Hanging from the ceiling
Dancing with sounds
Voices heard in the white noise
Screen saved dream
Moving through
Oblivion morn
Corner alone
All you see are
Hands
Touching
Untouched bed sheets
Spell betrayed
Who touched these palms
Who lost these fingers
Sharp veined skin veiled
Amazingly yours
Outstretched for
A dropp of water
A bit of a sound
A fallen leaf…
Anything
Dying in a web of palm lines
Nailed
Knocking at the door
Opening closing to keep the knock within
Spell betrayed
Pulling the strings of the sky
That makes the body move
Soul lost behind sleeping
Untouched bed sheets
Oblivion morn

In Prayer
in prayer you kneel you make your pleas
you signify
your lowliness in supplication
you behave
like a slave
you mumble you juggle your words
choppy sometimes as you are in deep sorrow
in hunger in thirst
in dire need of comfort
asking wanting that your prayers
be granted
you genuflect to a certain extent
you are crying
you are silent
yet you are so confused and crowded
you need your prayers to be answered
at once
the soonest
you are dying
or someone you love is dying out there
you want to live
you want the other you love to live some years
you want to be together
hence your prayers
some tears fall on the floors now wet and salty
a flood of tears
a rush of a thousand words in supplication
you fall on the floor
face down the earth hands stretching body flat and so tired
i watch you and i pity you and if i were God myself i could have
heard and granted all our prayers
the prayer room is so silent
it is cold tonight and i am too, so confused hearing nothing
outside a storm is raging
the rain so strong like the wind is coming
i close the door and the windows so there may still be silence
so our prayers may be heard
who knows? maybe, maybe, who knows? we must still continue....

I Don't Really Know When Will This End
this silence
when will this end, this silence between us at noon
a harsh noon, hot and humid, where i burn like a pile of wood in the forest
on a very cold night with you on the other side of the bed
facing the full moon and some shooting stars
this silence between us, when will this end when will the space
between our eyes
resolve the distance of the seasons night and day and summer and rain
i sleep on the bed alone on some scorpion thoughts biting one another
inflicting venoms that numb and even kill
and there you are rocking yourself on a chair making some sleep
like a concoction
of vodka and champagne teasing your eyes filled with tears
the soap on tv is busy with their stories of pain and twist and turns
i pray to end this silence so we can talk and
lay down the final plans
of our earthy longings some demarcations of pain and tolerance and
facts and conclusions
this wherefore and therefore finally
you turn off the tv, and you lay beside me touching my hand
i give in, i still miss you, and i think, the silence has come on the soft
wings of a butterfly for a brief flutter at the ceiling
looking at ourselves for another sweeter second time beginning
the cliche: love is sweeter the second time around is still written on the wall
how can i forget it

Still loving you.....
In the space of silence
Where only the stones can speak
I lighted your candle
Wanting to illuminate your world
The light touched you
I keep the memory of you and me inside
Bathing it with my tears
Love would bloom again
As it flourished in the past
In tender summer nights
Those nights would be haunted
By the specter of an innocent being
But many years have passed
It was like I was in another life
Our love is as alike as
The grass mowed late in the autumn
Waiting for the frost
Nothing remained but
The love's shadow and its white frost
Keeping the hope of the resurrection.

A Rock Garden
in my present garden
i put rocks and pebbles
some sands
added dusts
they ask what do i grow
in there?
i put a chair and sit there
alone
barefoot i put my hands
in the open
i gaze
feeling like the sun
to some
planets
the stones as i walk
for a while
grate
as though they have
teeth
then back to where i sit
they begin
to grow silence
silence is a lotus
it is a pond too where
a dragonfly is
hovering
there is this stillness of a
little universe
the space is emptiness
of imaginary
stars
there is no moon here
no one is lost
there are no leaves
no pretensions of stems and calyx
the stones are faceless
like everyone that i meet in the mall
the rocks stand like gods
unchanged unaffected by the chaos of
my thoughts
i gaze
transfer my eyes to those that remain
intact
immutable hardness
fixed situations
they only sound when you take a walk
they do not rearrange things here
for they are heavy
and always
unchanged, unaffected
steady, firm
lifeless, unfeeling
stubborn, solid,
tonight darkness sleeps with them
its coldness seeps in every stone
lifelessly
always unaffected, unfeeling
and much as i wanted to stay
i can't
i have life out there
a door to open again and again...

Nothing But a Shadow
Here we are walking
yet not talking
silence silence
we've grown apart
yet here we are
walking, but not talking
we are together
yet far apart
silence silence
I watch our shadows
with a sour look
slipping farther apart
This cannot be
what happened to you and me
silence silence
What happened over the summer
you found a job
and we stopped seeing eachother
I wish our shadows would be close again
like when you and me were best friends
