After The Storms....

after all these storms
i shall walk again on those peaceful paths
into the rice fields of my
ancestors
where the stalks despite the wind
still know how
to rise

Rice Fields

Diminutive rice paddy's cry
Villages copulate with war
Shedding all but the soul
We tremble like dying leaves
Sacred soil of our ancestors
Sacred sky of all the gentle
Thatch huts burn in the night
Flags fly like charred flesh

Now the wind has new visitors
Ghost that walk main street
Ghost of children’s dreams
No silhouettes in candlelight
Where is the moon for her daughter?
Eyes of endless rain
Tides driven by guns and fire
She stares at the rice fields

Fields Of Gold

Youll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
Youll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in the fields of gold
So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold
Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
Well forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in the fields of gold
See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that Ive broken
But I swear in the days still left
Well walk in the fields of gold
Well walk in the fields of gold
Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold
Youll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in the fields of gold
When we walked in the fields of gold
When we walked in the fields of gold

Paths Of Victory

Trails of troubles,
Roads of battles,
Paths of victory,
I shall walk.
The trail is dusty
And my road it might be rough,
But the better roads are waiting
And boys it aint far off.
Trails of troubles,
Roads of battles,
Paths of victory,
We shall walk.
I walked down by the river,
I turned my head up high.
I saw that silver linin
That was hangin in the sky.
Trails of troubles,
Roads of battles,
Paths of victory,
We shall walk.
The evenin dusk was rollin,
I was walking down the track.
There was a one-way wind a-blowin
And it was blowin at my back.
Trails of troubles,
Roads of battles,
Paths of victory,
We shall walk.
The gravel road is bumpy,
Its a hard road to ride,
But theres a clearer road a-waitin
With the cinders on the side.
Trails of troubles,
Roads of battles,
Paths of victory,
We shall walk.
That evening train was rollin,
The hummin of its wheels,
My eyes they saw a better day
As I looked across the fields.
Trails of troubles,
Roads of battles,
Paths of victory,
We shall walk.
The trail is dusty,
The road it might be rough,
But the good road is a-waitin
And boys it aint far off.
Trails of troubles,
Roads of battles,
Paths of victory,
We shall walk.

A Lonely Bird On The Electric Wire

this afternoon i take a walk leading to the farm
it is harvest time
and i see the harvesters cutting the rice stalks filled with golden grains
they would group what they gather at a certain place
mounds and mounds of rice grains this time of a bumper year

on the other side are carabaos grazing
lots of grass to graze adding the recently cut rice stalks

i look at the clouds white and blue and shades of both
my attention is however caught by a single bird perched on the electrical wire connecting two poles about 30 meters apart

it is alone there
and i move closely to see whether it is really a bird

indeed it is one of the sparrows in the ricefield
but so unlike the rest it
it is sitting there alone.

our eyes met.

and i tell my wife about this lonely bird.

she says i am just making a metaphor

i sit alone in my garden now after dining

and i wonder if the bird flew back to its nest or to some territory of its own
where their species also live
and i wonder if the bird must be also telling the other birds that it saw
a man walking alone on that path leading to the farm
and unlike other men he prefers to walk alone
and i also think that perhaps the bird would also take issue about the fact that indeed

our eyes met

and i know the other birds would say
that it is nothing but also a sort of metaphor and to the least that

it is nothing but a kind of fable.

Back To The Usual Walk In The Rice Fields

i am back to this place
and i am feeling strange
there are changes
and some i can tell have been missing

a few meters from where i stand
under this mahogany tree
where the wind is cold and fresh
flavored by the newly cut rice stalks
over this spread of golden fields

the well is still there
but the brown woman with earth skin is gone

an island of coconut trees

(and some mango trees
and banana shrubs)

has turned bald
and the grasses claim another territory to its grassland

the sparrows must have migrated to the nearby forest

the cable lines run an empty length of a sigh
from one pole to another
endlessly clinging is this anonymous electricity

the twenty or so white herons are here again
pecking on some little frogs in small ponds

i walk under the sun
revisiting reevaluating rekindling perhaps
the reasons why i must go on living
a life unlived for quite a time

why are the fields empty? why are the blackbirds circling the tree?
why do people pass by this path unable to know the significance
of this human journey?

the sun is up like an absurdity triumphant
a dog comes near me

it is waggling its tail and i am calling him another name.

Love, dyes and butterflies

my sisters stood in light
my brothers ate in peace
ancestors' paths descendants' plight
all merged into a single piece

of stream let music throbbing in my veins
of storms killing ores in iron fields of rust
of horizons split fire lit coloured that craved
a soothing sound a mother fertile ground

where each earthquake thrundered at oblivion rains
to name the nameless pain the pain that named
love, dyes and butterflies born of cry and praise
spreading their wings still making no sound

But Let Me Talk Now About The Sunflower Queen

at first i contemplate about the
sunflower as a princess
but it will not do her justice
because she is the queen
of the sun,
she rules the fields of green
and blue
and red too, these sunsets and
even sunrises
playing well
tagging her along
to paths of joys
& sorrows

she stands flower high
to the clouds
to storms and tempests
she yields
like any flower
still queenly to her bowing
only to rise again
with her seeds

yes, her many princesses
by her side
wilted yellowed petals
and withered
stalk
some soft winds
sad
some drops of rain still about to fall

The Arrival Of The Sparrows

at first glance they look like stones raining
on the fields

my surprise is immense

i am stunned

when i get near
ah, these are the small brown sparrows
from faraway
landing on the
rice-fields of the fields of hay

the village sings again!

do you remember
rice fields? try imagining
the green rice fields,
put some hills
more hills, and put a gap
between two hills,
and put the sun
shining brightly
and then put some black
buffaloes grazing at the
foot of the hills,
and then on the left side
try putting a nipa hut
a window and a little girl
looking out for sparrows
and on the right side
put the running river and
a jumping fish

do you still think that this
could be your home?

Bunker Soldiers

Trained bodies in coordination
Is that a better way for bunker soldiers
But its a nicer way to spend a war
On lava beaches and sandy seaside
The rusting bodies are surplus now then
We never taught them how to fight like that
The objects exercise is so compulsive
Its not a better way but it still suits us
Id give up rice fields to fight like you

Its not a better way
Though we are here to stay
Well that might seem ok
Waves of people
In strange directions
Its no use talking
Theres no decisions
They gave up houses to be refugees
The mud in ditches is over their knees
The sand bagged trenches are over our heads
This kind of warfares become hide and seek
Though khaki uniforms are universal
Your propaganda is losing appeal
Id give up rice fields to fight like you
Id give up rice fields to fight like you

The Golden Fields Of Rice

soon it will be harvest time
and you will see the women all wrapped in their sarong
their heads covered against the sun
bowing before these golden ricefields harvesting the
produce of their plowing and sowing men

soon it will be another happy hour
of drinking and singing and merry making
some debts will be paid off
the children shall remain in school
delicious dinners shall be served on the table
and happy conversations shall be in place
in the backyards of these working people

soon the fields will be empty again
some dried stalks will be left
some grains remain unpicked
by then it will be summer and the sun
will be so scorching

there will be changes going between the sowing and the harvesting
my faith shall keep staying amidst the cycles of the sun and the rain
the wet and the dry seasons of this tropical place
the mudding and the cracking of the paths

i will always keep going
to walk on like i am bound for a certain destination

Different Paths (A Prayer)

Oh Lord, we all walk different paths in our daily lives.
Some of us are frowned upon for the paths we take.
Does that make us worse than any other who believes in you?
We take these paths, not because we are bad,
but because of circumstances beyond our control.
Therefore, as we say our prayers each day
forgive us from any wrong that we do.

Amen

Lover, Come!

lover, come!
i cannot bear another moment.
i walk aimless through fields,
down wooded paths
to where the water sings
against the rocks!

i have forgotten you,
forgotten your name,
forgotten your face!
all that i have left are
the faint memories
of smells and tastes
and hunger

and timeless indentions
left by touch and feel
and need
lover, come!

lover, come!
through storms and battles,
years of hardship and loss...
through chains and bars and tears
never cried, words never formed...
i have travelled, i have endured,
alone, and cold, ... beaten, and proud,
tired, and sleepless...
till now i am old.

lover, come!
my body yearns and burns,
my hands tremble-
yet are strong!
i want to feel you again,
i want to know you again.
to conquer and surrender,
never knowing which is which,
not caring!

lover, come!
in the still of night,
in the heat of day,
come take my hand!

we'll walk off together
without a glance, without regrets,
daring to live these precious moments
lover, come!

Africa Rise!

Africa your kindness and loyalty should cover us,
Our enemies are alive and healthy,
We are bent and bowed down through the will of our sadness,
They have made us walk bowed in sadness,
Most of our lives we have wear black clothes as a sign of sadness,

Africa they should fall in their own traps,
Let them grumble in their own nets like fishes,
Let them bury themselves in their own pits,
Let them be embarrassed to speak their known lies,
But rise Africa.

As you do this, do not think you are doing us favour,
For you betrayed our ancestors,
You gave us away like sheep in the market place,
You took away all our talented blood to work in your fields,
You let our enemies push us back while you were watching,
You let them laugh at us but I will not say a thing,
You have allowed them barn our music, languages and attires,
But rise Africa.

My soul waits patiently to see you great again.
Who suppressed your growth shall grown in pain!
May their evil movement be like that of a snail, which melts as it moves,
May your enemies disappear as water as grass burned in water,
May they be destroyed quickly as grass burning in winter,
Until then, Africa will rise.

To a Lady Seen From the Train

O why do you walk through the fields in gloves,
Missing so much and so much?
O fat white woman whom nobody loves,
Why do you walk through the fields in gloves,
When the grass is soft as the breast of doves
And shivering sweet to the touch?
O why do you walk through the fields in gloves,
Missing so much and so much?

Fortuna

The wind blows east, the wind blows west,
And the frost falls and the rain:
A weary heart went thankful to rest,
And must rise to toil again, 'gain,
And must rise to toil again.

The wind blows east, the wind blows west,
And there comes good luck and bad;
The thriftiest man is the cheerfulest;
'Tis a thriftless thing to be sad, sad,
'Tis a thriftless thing to be sad.

The wind blows east, the wind blows west;
Ye shall know a tree by its fruit:
This world, they say, is worst to the best; --
But a dastard has evil to boot, boot,
But a dastard has evil to boot.

The wind blows east, the wind blows west;
What skills it to mourn or to talk?
A journey I have, and far ere I rest;
I must bundle my wallets and walk, walk,
I must bundle my wallets and walk.

The wind does blow as it lists alway;
Canst thou change this world to thy mind?
The world will wander its own wise way;
I also will wander mine, mine,
I also will wander mine.

I Will Walk With You

Cover your heart, put on your mask
Dance with me slowly, is all that I ask
What is the hardest, falling or not
Knowing just where to begin or start
I will walk, I will walk, with you
I will walk with you
Lay down beside me, tell me your dreams
The view from inside is not what it seems
But no one will hurt you, not like before
Your last thread of forgiveness wont reach the door, noooo
I will walk, I will walk, with you
I will walk with you
I will walk, I will walk, with you
I will walk with you
I will walk, I walk with you
Pull up the curtains
Watch the night fall
Who has the answers when nobody calls
Now rely on fury, blame the sun rise last
Cause I was in love with you, but I cant change the past
I will walk, I will walk with you
I will walk with you (with you)
I will walk, I will walk with you
I will walk with you

She Is A Country

Japan is in the wind

her culture has been made
on the far east land
by the seasons in the wind from every direction

take rice for instance
without the rainy season in June
we wouldn't have that delicious rice in this world

clouds roll by to the east

I am sure your country also has unique culture on her own
I'd like to meet you and her
