The restless Club-dancer
I saw a comely colleen
walking in and out,
in measured steps and turns,
seeming restless,
but denying her eyes a glance on me.
“Why are you standing here? ”,
my wife queried me and urged to get in.
“Should I get your visa
for loitering on the entrance? ”,
I parried her with a smile.
“Look! She is a club-dancer.
Leaving her illegitimate boy
to live with her parents leaning on her income,
she comes at times to see him”.
My curiosity became boundess.
As the people assign her the mark of shame,
she has restrained her son to play indoors
and to graze in a school far-off.
But the active child steals through the gate often
to join with other children,
who are warned by their muckracking mothers
not to move with this banned breed.
Starving for affection,
he would hang about at the gate
and look at the kids clinging to their parents.
I try my best to stare at her eyes straight,
may be to plumb the depths of sorrow there.
But she yields herself
only to stand with her face down before me
not knowing that my heart gets wet
seeing her pathetic plight.

A Step
There are these steps
which rule my life;
I look behind
and see them:
pathways I've taken,
impressions here and there
from the baby ones
to my teens
all there in the sand
trailing behind me.
I've stepped up to challenges;
my first apartment
my first home
career and children
all steps along my way;
I see the future ones
arrayed in front of me
marker points to strive for.
Sadly too
I have known
the 12 steps
of sister who
needed these.
I have known the 12 pillars of light;
stairways to heaven;
the two-step dancing
and step-ford wives.
I've looked behind
and at times,
there was only one set of tracks;
my walking alone.
There have been big steps
and little steps
none greater than
the one
I took
stepping up to you
who awaited me
at the stair case height
taking my arm
to ascend
to the preacher standing there-
the biggest,
happiest,
most wonderfullest
step
I have ever taken
in my life.

My wife is a most knowing woman,
She always is finding me out,
She never will hear explanations
But instantly puts me to rout,
There's no use to try and deceive her,
If out with my friends night or day,
In a most inconceivable manner,
She tells where I've been right away,
She says that I'm 'mean' and 'inhuman.'

She would've been hung up for witchcraft
If she had lived sooner, I know,

I'm Walking Backwards For Christmas
I'm walking backwards for Christmas,
Across the Irish Sea,
I'm walking backwards for Christmas,
It's the only thing for me.
I've tried walking sideways,
And walking to the front,
But people just look at me,
And say it's a publicity stunt.
I'm walking backwards for Christmas,
To prove that I love you.
An immigrant lad, loved an Irish colleen
From Dublin Galway Bay.
