The Making Up

Little Miss Margaret sits in a pout,
She and her Dolly have just fallen out.

Dolly is gazing with sorest stare,
Fitted dejectedly back in her chair.

Angry at Margaret, tearful and grieved,
Sore at the spanking so lately received.

Pursed are the maiden's lips close as can be,
They are not speaking, Miss Dolly and she.

Five minutes passes in silence and then,
Margaret's ready for playing again.

Dolly unbendingly sits in her place,
Never a change coming over her face.

Up mad goes, Margaret dropping her pout,
Clasping her playmate she whispers in doubt.

Let's don't play and cry, it's too much like true,
Let's make up Dolly I ain't mad is you?

DOLLY:I like fancy,frilly things
High-heeld shoes and diamond rings
Ragtime bands and western swing
And sneakin' around with you
BURT:Well I like beer and rodeos
Detective books and dominoes
Footballgames and Cheerios
And sneakin' around with you

Goin' a round or two
Doin' what lovers do
Whenever they're sneakin' around
DOLLY:I like lots of cash on hand
And dirty jokes about the Fuller Brush Man
BURT:I like stuff I understand, like sneakin' around with you
DOLLY:You know I like a thrill that has no strings
BURT:Friendship that don't ever change
DOLLY:And laughter from the joy of things

Keeping it all brand-new
Gettin' the best of you
Whenever we're sneakin' around
Sneakin' around that's all

Dolly and the Salesman

There's a salesperson at the door
someone said
and so you went to the door
and there was the young salesman

with a book in his hand
and in a sharp grey suit
and hair neat and short cut
yes?

you said
I represent Carson's stores
and it has been brought
to my notice

that you are behind
with your payments
is that so?
you said

yes
the young guy said
three months behind
and if you don't pay today

the item you have chosen to buy
will be removed
is that so?
you said

the young guy looked
into his book of figures
and script
so you called out

Dolly there's a young guy here
who says we owe him money
you both waited
while Dolly came to the door

what do we owe?
she asked
money
the young guy said

what for?
Dolly said
a vacuum cleaner
the young guy said

you are three months behind
now if you do not pay up today
it will be removed
Dolly raised her eyebrows

and put on her
don't mess with me face
and went off
the young guy

and you looked
at each other in silence
after a few minutes
Dolly returned

carrying the vacuum cleaner
here
she said
here's your darn Hoover

take the thing
and go stick it
where the sun
don't shine

and so the young man
held up the vacuum cleaner
and looked at you
and Dolly

and said
right don't come back
to the store
because you won't

be served again
and off he went
out along the road
in the falling black rain.

Beautiful, Antique Dollies

Beautiful, antique dollies
All stand in a row,
Laced with ornamental pretence,
Staring from the window.
Each beautiful, antique dolly,
Bears her beautiful, antique price,
For her pretty, satin ribbon
And her vacant, azure eyes.
One beautiful, antique dolly,
With her frosted, golden curls,
Is severed from the window,
For her reflection in a girl.
Now this beautiful, antique dolly,
Stands, no longer on her shelf,
Her ivory face is glowing
As she adorns by herself.
All the other antique dollies,
In the window where they stay
Whisper after midnight
Of the dolly that went away.
Our beautiful, antique dolly
Rooted in her antique home
Watermarks her china skin
She hates to be alone.
One beautiful, antique dolly,
Breaks her brilliant, painted smile,
Climbs down from her silver stand
And shatters on the tile.

Negligent Mary

AH, Mary! what, do you for dolly not care?
And why is she left on the floor?
Forsaken, and cover'd with dust, I declare;
With you I must trust her no more.

I thought you were pleased, as you took her so gladly,
When on your birthday she was sent;
Did I ever suppose you would use her so sadly?
Was that, do you think, what I meant?

With her bonnet of straw you once were delighted,
And trimm'd it so pretty with pink;
But now it is crumpled, and dolly is slighted:
Her nurse quite forgets her, I think.

Suppose now–for Mary is dolly to me,
Whom I love to see tidy and fair–
Suppose I should leave you, as dolly I see,
In tatters, and comfortless there.

But dolly feels nothing, as you do, my dear,
Nor cares for her negligent nurse:
If I were as careless as you are, I fear,
Your lot, and my fault, would be worse.

And therefore it is, in my Mary, I strive
To check every fault that I see:
Mary's doll is but waxen–mamma's is alive,
And of far more importance than she.

My Ship and I

O it's I that am the captain of a tidy little ship,
Of a ship that goes a sailing on the pond;
And my ship it keeps a-turning all around and all about;
But when I'm a little older, I shall find the secret out
How to send my vessel sailing on beyond.

For I mean to grow a little as the dolly at the helm,
And the dolly I intend to come alive;
And with him beside to help me, it's a-sailing I shall go,
It's a-sailing on the water, when the jolly breezes blow
And the vessel goes a dive-dive-dive.

O it's then you'll see me sailing through the rushes and the reeds,
And you'll hear the water singing at the prow;
For beside the dolly sailor, I'm to voyage and explore,
To land upon the island where no dolly was before,
And to fire the penny cannon in the bow.

Don't Take Lifts From Dames

Whose car
did you get out of?

Dolly asked.
Some dame

from the bedding department,
you replied.

She’s been bedding you
I suppose? Dolly said.

No, you replied,
she’s seven months pregnant.

So you got her pregnant huh?
Can’t keep your hands

to yourself can you.
I just got a lift home

by her that’s all.
You took off your coat

and went to the sitting room
and poured yourself a drink.

Dolly followed you in.
I found this name

in your pocket book.
A girl’s name.

You recognise it? Eh?
She showed you

the pocket book.
You read the name.

That’s just some dame
whose name I put down

who’s been shoplifting.
So you say.

For all I know
you’re having it off

with her too.
Maybe you’re having all

the dames at the store.
I’m a security guard

not a Casanova, you said.
She went off

out to the kitchen
muttering to herself.

You drained your drink
and poured another.

You could hear her
in the kitchen

slamming down
pots and pans

and cursing the air.
I don’t screw any dames

but you, you said.
You’re my Sweetie pie.

Dolly came back
to the door way

and stared at you.
You mean that?

Sure I do.
Every single word?

Every single word.
I’m your Sweetie pie?

Sure you are.
And you ain’t been sleeping

with no other woman?
No, of course I haven’t.

Never would.
Dolly’s glassy gaze softened.

She pushed back
her hair from her eyes.

Ok Sexy Boy
maybe I believe you.

Maybe you’re telling
me the truth.

Maybe I got you wrong.
She turned and went back

in the kitchen.
You sighed softly.

BUT IF YOU’RE LYING TO ME
I’ll POKE OUT YOUR EYES

she bellowed.
Out in the kitchen

Dolly banged around.
You emptied the glass.

A love was dying.
You could sense it

in your bones and
in the hollow sound.

Like Mother Like Daughter

When I was a child had dollies and teddies
I played tea party and bookstore,
And followed mum around the shopping centre with my dolly in her pram
I had my pretend credit cards and they were the coolest thing ever.

Now the dolly in her pram has turned in to a real child,
And my pretend credit cards are real
I don’t play tea party but make dinner every night
And a bookstore is a place where I buy text books and parenting books,
Not comics and novels

Soon again it will be time for tea parties and teddies,
And going shopping with dolly in tow
But now it is my little girl who has grand dreams of being just like her mum
Of having credit cards and a daughter of her own.
But for now as I watch her sleep I pray she does not repeat my mistakes

Dolly Dagger

Here comes dolly dagger
Her loves so heavy, gonna make you stagger.
Dolly dagger, she drinks her blood from a jagged edge...
Been riding broomsticks since she was fifteen
Blow out all the other witches on the scene.
She got a bull whip, just as long as your life.
Her tongue can even scratch
The soul out of the devils wife.

Hey, little dolly with the blue jeans on
I wanna ramrod with you honey, till half-past dawn
Let your hair down sugar and pick up this beat
Come on and meet me tonight down on bluebird street
Ive been working all week, Im up to my neck in hock

Shes a hot stepping hemi with a four on the floor

Well look over yonder see them city lights

Come on, come on lets shake it tonight
Come on, come, come on little sugar

The First Fall Of Snow

Recorded by hank williams, sr.
Writer: lorene rose
I talked with a stranger, so sad and alone.
His heart was tormented, tattered and torn
He told me a story,of sorrow and bold
His heart went to heaven,at the first fall of snow
He spooke of his angel, a dear baby girl
He loved every foot tail, he loved every curl
But she went to heaven, just one year ago
The angels came for her, at the first fall of snow
He still has a dolly, that she used to love
He held and caressed it, and gazed up above
He whispered my darlin, your waiting I know
Ill bring you your dolly, at the first fall of snow
And there as I listened, my eyes filled with tears
I knew she was full fild, in happier years
His frail body trembled, he spoke soft and low
Ill bring you your dolly, at the first fall of snow
I just couldnt tell him how I felt inside
My heart was so heavy,my feelings too high
He smilled as we parted, cause he didnt know
That we lost our darlin, at the first fall of snow

When Margaret Comes To Town

When you were a kid you recieved no good instruction
And your mother was never nowhere to be found
This lies were yelled and the truth was seldom spoken
Thats what you get when margaret comes to town
She likes to keep things upside down
When margaret comes to town
When your thoughts are twisted and distorted
And your children are forced to choose sides and lie down
And the kepper is screaming drunk running around naked
Its for your pleasure when margaret comes to town
She likes to keep things upside down
When margaret comes to town
Oh, but those who believe in her
They cut off their noses to spite their faces
Leaving you the little one scared and lonely
Who really cares about you now
So if you see her coming man youd bettertake cover
She stays down at the dark end of a frown
And just like the sirens that are so sweet singing
Its better just to leave when margaret comes to town
When margaret comes to town
She likes to keep things upside down
When margaret comes to town
She likes to keep things upside down
When margaret comes to town

Amy Margaret's Five Year Old

Amy Margaret's five years old,
Amy Margaret's hair is gold,
Dearer twenty-thousand-fold
Than gold, is Amy Margaret.
"Amy" is friend, is "Margaret"
The pearl for crown or carkanet?
Or peeping daisy, summer's pet?
Which are you, Amy Margaret?
A friend, a daisy, and a pearl,
A kindly, simple, precious girl, --
Such, howsoe'er the world may twirl,
Be ever, -- Amy Margaret!

Dear Margaret

Dear margaret I beg of you
Dear margaret gonna tell on you
Dont want to be patronized
By those lying eyes
Dear margaret I wanted you
Youre warming me up
So you can leave me cold
Kissin up to the rich
Intending to control
All the money money money
Is that all you live for
Youre a model and example
Of a greed that will destroy
Dear margaret I beg of you
Dont you like rock n roll
Dear margaret gonna tell on you
I like your wiggle when you walk
Dear margaret I trusted you
Dont you let me down
Dear margaret I wanted you
You had me living the illusion
To be a millionaire
Investing in stocks
Look at you now stringin other guys along
Youre into swinging
Now the money is all gone
Dear margaret I beg of you
Dont you like rock n roll
Dear margaret I trusted you
Your economic growth
And your cool suntan
But what have you done to your fellow man
Youve betrated us all with just a
Wave of your hand
What good is prosperity
When it starves the soul in man
Dear margaret I beg of you
Dont you like rock n roll
Dear margaret gonna tell on you
I like your wiggle when you walk
Dont want to be patronized
