Nurse in Evergreen of Absence
My nurse, my blessed nurse
In evergreen of absence
You breast-fed me, nurtured me
But now my confidence is shaken
My tranquillity vanished, taken.
I extend my arms toward you
Please, lift me up, hold me tight
Yet you just stand in the square
As I cry and weep to no avail
No matter how much I kick the air
I beg: Lift me up, hold me right
All in vain, a rope of sand
You are firm, ignore my plight.
I cry and scream and kick in rage
Still undeterred you stand your place
But now why rivers of tears pour down
From your eyes over your face?
Then in faltering steps slowly
You walk toward the gate, it’s open
There you stop, framed and frozen.
Only the flowers on your dress elate
Dance and stream in the balmy breeze
As poplars whisper secrets to armadas
Of loudly singing southern cicadas.
You stare at me for a long time from the gate
Before turning on your heels to a formless form
Disappearing fast in the shadows of the alley
Like a butterfly, swept away by a nightly storm.
I never saw you again.
O my nurse, my sweet nurse
In evergreen of absence.

The nurse was like a mother to him
He could not speak,
He could not move
Kept lying
On the hospital bed
With eager eyes
Kept looking at the door
He was waiting
For the nurse to arrive
His face lit up
When he saw the nurse
Greeted her with a big smile
How are you?
And good morning she said
To show his happiness
He giggled a bit
And looked into her eyes
His eyes got wet
As if he got
everything he wanted
The nurse was like
a mother to him
He was like a child to her
Did everything
what a child needed
Love and care she provided
Never did he felt
The absence of his mother

Night Nurse
Tell her try her best just to make it quick
Woman tend to the sick
Because there must be something she can do
This heart is broken in two
Tell her its a case of emergency
Theres a patient by the name of mickey
Night nurse
Only you alone can quench this here thirst
My night nurse oh god
Oh the pain is getting worse
I dont want to see no doc
I need attendance from my nurse around the clock
Because theres no prescription for me
Shes the one the only remedy

Evergreen
Evergreen
Joe tanner
Sometimes love will bloom in the springtime
Then like flowers in summer it will grow
And then fade away in the winter
When the cold winds begin to blow
But when its evergreen, evergreen
It will last through the summer and winter too
When love is evergreen, evergreen
Like my love for you
So hold my hand and tell me
Youll be mine through laughter or through tears
Then let the whole world see, our love will be
Evergreen through all the years
For when its evergreen, evergreen
It will last through the summer and winter too
When love is evergreen, evergreen
Like my love for you

War Nurse
She was just another war nurse
She could strike a noble pose
Caring for our young boys when a bullet laid them low
She would hover over them and cry
And pull the cover over them when theyd die
She was just another lonesome lady, lover, sister of the gun
And though france would call her darling,
She was a nurse neath the rising sun
She knew no hells or heavens, or harbors or havens
She was every mother, sister, wife and lover
Whose love a soldier boy was savin
She believed in the birth of the broad sword
She was not a shielded one
Though france would call her darlin
She was nurse neath the rising sun
She was a soldiers shrapnel sweetheart, direct from the combat zone
She was a reincarnation o fthe virgin mary
She was the hooker down in san antone
And though her heart was somewhere in iceland
Commanding the dawn patrol
Blessed in this blood and stitched into these bones
The war nurse left her soul
Blessed in this blood and stitched into these bones
The war nurse left her soul

Jim
Who ran away from his Nurse and was eaten by a Lion
There was a Boy whose name was Jim;
His Friends were very good to him.
They gave him Tea, and Cakes, and Jam,
And slices of delicious Ham,
And Chocolate with pink inside
And little Tricycles to ride,
And read him Stories through and through,
And even took him to the Zoo--
But there it was the dreadful Fate
Befell him, which I now relate.
You know--or at least you ought to know,
For I have often told you so--
That Children never are allowed
To leave their Nurses in a Crowd;
Now this was Jim's especial Foible,
He ran away when he was able,
And on this inauspicious day
He slipped his hand and ran away!
He hadn't gone a yard when--Bang!
With open Jaws, a lion sprang,
And hungrily began to eat
The Boy: beginning at his feet.
Now, just imagine how it feels
When first your toes and then your heels,
And then by gradual degrees,
Your shins and ankles, calves and knees,
Are slowly eaten, bit by bit.
No wonder Jim detested it!
No wonder that he shouted ``Hi!''
The Honest Keeper heard his cry,
Though very fat he almost ran
To help the little gentleman.
``Ponto!'' he ordered as he came
(For Ponto was the Lion's name),
``Ponto!'' he cried, with angry Frown,
``Let go, Sir! Down, Sir! Put it down!''
The Lion made a sudden stop,
He let the Dainty Morsel drop,
And slunk reluctant to his Cage,
Snarling with Disappointed Rage.
But when he bent him over Jim,
The Honest Keeper's Eyes were dim.
The Lion having reached his Head,
The Miserable Boy was dead!
When Nurse informed his Parents, they
Were more Concerned than I can say:--
His Mother, as She dried her eyes,
Said, ``Well--it gives me no surprise,
He would not do as he was told!''
His Father, who was self-controlled,
Bade all the children round attend
To James's miserable end,
And always keep a-hold of Nurse
For fear of finding something worse.

Pooch
Nurse, won't you let him in?
He's barkin' an' scratchen' the door,
Makin' so dreffel a din
I jest can't sleep any more;
Out there in the dark an' the cold,
Hark to him scrape an' whine,
Breakin' his heart o' gold,
Poor little pooch o' mine.
Nurse, I was sat in ma seat
In front o' the barber shop,
When there he was lickin' ma feet
As if he would never stop;
Then all of a sudden I see
That dog-catcher moseyin' by:
"Whose mongrel is that?" says he;
"It's ma pedigree pup," says I.
Nurse, he was starved an' a-stray,
But his eyes was plumbful o' trust.
How could I turn him away?
I throwed him a bit o' a crust,
An' he choked as he gluped it up,
Then down at ma feet he curled:
Poor little pitiful pup!
Hadn't a friend in the world.
Nurse, I was friendless too,
So we was makin' a pair.
I'm black as a cast-off shoe,
But that li'le dog didn't care.
He loved me as much as though
Ma skin was pearly an' white:
Somehow dogs seem to know
When a man's heart's all right.
Nurse, we was thick as thieves;
Nothin' could pry us apart,
An' now to hear how he grieves
Is twistin' a knife in ma heart.
As I worked at ma shoe-shine stand
He'd watch me wi' eyes o' love,
A-wigglin' an' lickin' ma hand
Like I was a god above.
Nurse, I sure had no luck
That night o' the rain an' then fog;
There was that thunderin' truck,
And right in the way - ma dog.
Oh, I was a fool, I fear;
It's harder to think than to feel . . .
I dashed in, flung the pup clear,
But - I went under the wheel. . . .
Nurse, it's a-gittin' dark;
Guess ma time's about up:
Don't seem to hear him bark,
Poor, broken-hearted pup! . . .
Why, here he is, darn his skin!
Lickin' ma face once more:
How did the cuss get in?
Musta' busted the door.
God, I'm an ol' black coon,
But You ain't conscious o' race.
I gotta be goin' soon,
I'll be meetin' You face to face.
I'se been sinful, dice an' hooch,
But Lordy, before I die
I'se a-prayin': "Be good to ma pooch" . . .
That's all - little mutt, good-bye.

Night Nurse
My sweet woman where are you?
Come to me oh my night nurse!
For i need your sweet love tonight.
No Doctor can heal me on this love,
For it is strictly one drop!
And i need your love tonight.
We've got one life to live and,
You've got my sweet love to hold onto;
For i really want the best in you.
Bear with me and come to me,
For i am moving ahead in search of you;
Because there are so many reasons on this love.
Come and share your red stripe with me,
Come oh my night nurse!
For the right medicine is with you.

A Child
A child,
Curious and innocent,
Slips from his Nurse, and rejoicing
Loses himself in the Fair.
Thro' the jostle and din
Wandering, he revels,
Dreaming, desiring, possessing;
Till, of a sudden
Tired and afraid, he beholds
The sordid assemblage
Just as it is; and he runs
With a sob to his Nurse
(Lighting at last on him),
And in her motherly bosom
Cries him to sleep.
Thus thro' the World,
Seeing and feeling and knowing,
Goes Man: till at last,
Tired of experience, he turns
To the friendly and comforting breast
Of the old nurse, Death.

Hot Sun, Cool Fire
Hot sun, cool fire, tempered with sweet air,
Black shade, fair nurse, shadow my white hair.
Shine, sun; burn, fire; breathe, air, and ease me;
Black shade, fair nurse, shroud me and please me.
Shadow, my sweet nurse, keep me from burning;
Make not my glad cause cause of mourning.
Let not my beauty's fire
Inflame unstaid desire,
Nor pierce any bright eye
That wandereth lightly.

Revenge Is Sweet
Revenge is sweet and I cant wait
Walk down the street, girl dont be late
Now I dont want your sympathy
So dont go sheddin no tears
For evry wrong that you did to me
Ill give you back in fear
Now its too late for apologies
Youve been thru this trick before
A million lies that you laid on me
You knocked me down on the floor
Im gonna get you back
Its just a matter of time
Its a grudge Ill nurse
Ill pay you back in kind, youll find
You had the chance to put things right
But you preferred to be cruel
Im sick of pleadin on my knees
Im tired of watchin you drool
Im gonna get you back
Its just a matter of time
This is one grudge Ill nurse
Ill pay you back in kind, youll find
Revenge is sweet and I cant wait
Walk down the street, girl dont be late
Im gonna get you back
Its just a matter of time
This is one grudge Ill nurse
Ill pay you back in kind, youll find
Revenge is sweet, revenge is sweet

To Know Them, And To Care!
we who walk
with the stink
of humanity...
who know the tears,
and name the sorrows
that only darkness holds...
who nurse at the breasts
of the woman branded...
who wash her hands and feet
as she lays dying....
who hold the orphaned children
close... taking their sickness....
who pray with the murderers,
who share with the thieves.
who walk with the crippled,
and hold the shaking addict....
we are by them blessed....
to know them, and to care!

Fear Of Flying
Fear of Flying
Having spent a week in Israel and seen the inequity and arrogance
of the way the Palestinians were treated, I had a breakdown and
sent to a psychiatric hospital. When feeling better a male nurse
was flying with me to London. The nurse had a great fear of flying
I persuaded him to take valium he was to give me. He got quite
giddy, I ordered whisky for both of us. He insisted on singing Yiddish
songs and fell asleep. I told the stewardess not to disturb him as he
had mental problems. For safety he was hand cuffed and I moved
to another seat. When we landed he had to be wheeled into
the terminal and it took me some time to tell them that it was no
longer my duty to look after him anymore. The nurse was carried
Into a cell while I caught a plane to Liverpool.

Conscious
His fingers wake, and flutter up the bed.
His eyes come open with a pull of will,
Helped by the yellow may-flowers by his head.
A blind-cord drawls across the window-sill . . .
How smooth the floor of the ward is! what a rug!
And who's that talking, somewhere out of sight?
Why are they laughing? What's inside that jug?
"Nurse! Doctor!" "Yes; all right, all right."
But sudden dusk bewilders all the air --
There seems no time to want a drink of water.
Nurse looks so far away. And everywhere
Music and roses burnt through crimson slaughter.
Cold; cold; he's cold; and yet so hot:
And there's no light to see the voices by --
No time to dream, and ask -- he knows not what.
