The Doll
The Doll
When mum went to work at the fish factory, there was no
money for baby-sitters; she gave me a black rag doll, to play
with. The doll, called Tom, was a caricature and today would
be seen as an insult. We had no radio or TV, and in the long
hours, when it rained and I could not go out, Tom became my
friend. Mum didn’t believe me when I said Tom could talk, but
only when we’re alone. School began I had new friends, and
boys don’t play with dolls; Tom ended up at the bottom of
a drawer. Forty years later I found Tom, in a shoe-box in
the basement, his fuzzy head rested on a pillow. I thought of
the time when he could talk. I put him back in the box and
taped the lid. Tom is dead, so is my childhood. In the stillness
I hear winds of coming chill, blow leaves along the asphalted
lane and far from where it all began.

Lover doll, oh lover doll
Lover doll, lover doll
Youre the cutest lover doll
That I ever did ever see
Let me tell you lover doll
You were meant, just meant for me
On the first time that I saw you
How I fell for your cuddly charms
Lover doll Im crazy for you
Let me rock you in my arms
Im so glad I found you
Never thought dollies came full grown
Im gonna tie a ribbon around you
Wrap you up and take you home
I would never treat you badly
Like a cast away broken toy
Lover doll I love you madly
Let me be your lover boy
Im so glad I found you
Never thought dollies came full grown
Im gonna tie a ribbon around you
Wrap you up and take you home

Dolls Of Religion
Dolls of Religion
Virgin Mary was a Barbie doll, the only one that has given birth
to a Barbie doll baby. Two thousand years this went unseen till
she appeared in toy shops, together with a cute Barbie doll man
... her son? And you now find them both in many homes placed
on shelves or cradled in children's arms. Artificial created, we can
never be as perfect as them. Timeless they are never get old, not
in the image of man's imperfection, but in image of a dreams that
lack what resemble souls and holds no promise that man was for
a higher purpose than just being alive. As millions of people go on
diets, they can never obtain long legs like a Barbie doll.

Devil Doll
(orbison)
Devil doll..........devil doll
We went steady in the fall,
We broke up in the spring
Your young lovin blinds,
And you gave me back my ring
Well I see now what my friends saw then,
That youre just not the one
To love someone true
The way I love you,
Oh devil doll
Now Im not the first one
And I wont be the last,
Youll make my heart
Just another heart youve broken in the past
Dont play a game with another guy,
Dont make me feel so blue,
Im a guy thats true and I love you
Oh devil doll
Now Im not the first one
Dont let me be the last,
Dont make my heart
Just another heart youve broken in the past,
Dont play a game with another guy,
Dont make me feel so blue,
Im a guy thats true and I love you

Rag Doll
Rag doll.
What tales you could tell.
A child's embrace
By a wishing well.
A painted face
And a Wizard's spell.
Ay birthdays
Young.
She always clung
To you.
Rag doll.
Of red and blue.
Rag doll.
You lay abandoned
On the floor.
Now lonely
Behind a cupboard door.
You weep.
Where is that spark
She used to keep
In her heart.
That you could feel.
Now she is grown.
You play no part.
You are not real.
From pigtails.
To E- mails.
Smiles,
For him now.
Not you.
Old rag doll.
Of red and blue.

Tear Off Your Own Head (It's A Doll Revolution)
Who dries your eyes when you cry real tears?
Who knows or cares what imitation is?
Only you do
You can paint his nails
Make him wear high heels
Why waste time altering the hemline?
Or do you?
Tear of your own head
Tear of your own head
It's a doll revolution
You can bat your lashes
You can cut your strings
Pull out his hair with your moveable fingers
It looks so real
But one won't do, so collect the set
Dress him in pink ribbons
Put him in a kitchenette
How does this feel?
Tear of your own head
Tear of your own head
It's a doll revolution
What's that sound?
It'll turn you around
It's a doll revolution
They're taking over
And they're tearing it down
It's a doll revolution
You can pull and pinch him
'Til he cries and squeals
You can twist his body
'Til it faces backwards
Plastic features
Could make somebody a pretty little wife
But don't let anybody tell you
How to live your life
Broken pieces
Tear off your own head
Tear off your own head
It's a doll revolution
Tear off your own head
Tear off your own head
It's a doll revolution
What's that sound?
It'll turn you around
It's a doll revolution
They're taking over
And they're tearing it down
It's a doll revolution
It's a doll revolution
Revolution (revolution)
Tear off your own head
Tear off your own head (revolution)
Tear off your own head
Tear off your own head

The Dolls
A DOLL in the doll-maker's house
Looks at the cradle and bawls:
'That is an insult to us.'
But the oldest of all the dolls,
Who had seen, being kept for show,
Generations of his sort,
Out-screams the whole shelf: 'Although
There's not a man can report
Evil of this place,
The man and the woman bring
Hither, to our disgrace,
A noisy and filthy thing.'
Hearing him groan and stretch
The doll-maker's wife is aware
Her husband has heard the wretch,
And crouched by the arm of his chair,
She murmurs into his ear,
Head upon shoulder leant:
'My dear, my dear, O dear.
It was an accident.'

Shabby Doll
Giving you more of what for
Always worked for me before
Now Im a shabby doll
Whats going on behind the green elevator door
With just a shabby doll
Theres a hit man facing
A compromising situation
With just a shabby doll
And a very neat line in character assassination
Shes just a shabby doll
Shes just a shabby doll
Shes putting him off and putting you on
Shes just the shabby doll
Youre swearing upon you know in your heart
Shes gone you know in your heart
Shes just a shabby doll
Theres a girl in this dress
Theres always a girl in distress
Shes just a shabby doll
Shes so sure shes self-possessed
Then again shes half undressed
Shes just a shabby doll
The boy that I used to be
Showed no sign of sympathy
For just a shabby doll
I have betrayed you and me
And paid for my own bribery
With just a shabby doll
(chorus)
Hes the tired toy that everyone enjoyed
He wants to be a fancy man but hes nothing but a nancy boy
Hes all pride and no joy
And being what you might call a whore
Always worked for me before
Now Im a shabby doll
Untie the gag the cats out of the bag
But wont show his claws
Hes just a shabby doll
She said you must be joking
Some things are left unspoken
Youre just a shabby doll
Hes lying limp and soaking
He was openly broken
By just a shabby doll

Baby Doll
Baby girl
I love you so
Baby girl
Please don't go
Baby girl;
That's who I am to you
A little doll
You take great care of
You brush the hair
Back off my face
Look in my eyes
And see grace
You see me as beauty
Out of all the dolls you chose me
Your little baby doll
Whom you love
Your little baby girl
That's who I'll be
Waiting here for you
Till you want me
Your baby girl
As cute as can be
I'll be your friend
Tell you anything
For now I'll sit on my shelf
Quiet and relaxed
But one day you'll open my box
And wonder what you thought
Baby girl I'll always be
In that line waiting, waiting
For the chance when I'm your baby girl
Someday the one you love will be me

Hey You
Hey you with the wedding dress on
Made of white chiffon blowing in the wind
Hey you with the dreams in your head
Youve been so mistead by your hearts pull
I know your waiting for your ship to come in
You anxiously wait for such a long time
Youre just like my ken and barbie doll
You dress up and play the game
Youre just like my ken and barbie doll
Your name will never change
Hey you with your eyes full of hope
You think you can rope your desire
Hey you, you naive thing
Your patience in time will tire
I know youre waiting for your ide to roll in
How did you ever get such high hopes?
Chorus:
Youre just like my ken and barbie doll
In a plastic world of make believe
Youre just like my ken and barbie doll
You know hes just gonna leave

Satin Doll
This scary face on the wall
His watch kills every minute
With a sherlock holmes hat
And a rope around his neck
cause she said
Satin doll, satin doll
Step by step
Against the wall, against the wall
Step
cause she said
Satin doll, satin doll
Step by step
Promises
Promises
Is what she said
Whos the vampires praying
He strangles me every minute
These purple eyes talk to him
Get me out of this constraint
Satin doll, satin doll
Step by step
Against the wall, against the wall
Step...

Voodoo Doll
You haunt my room in the dead of night
I see your face in the firelight
Your hungry kiss I can't forget
But I won't give it to you yet
You got moves make a good girl sweat
You won't catch me in your net
You work your magic on my blues
But I ain't no slave for you to use
I won't beg and I won't crawl
I won't be your voodoo doll
Baby I won't be your voodoo doll
Stirring up a potion of colors
Making me crazy
You got something I can't leave alone
Shaking me
Tremble...you're calling me baby
Heaven help me turn my heart to stone
Hey moon man - don't shine on me
You are dnagerous company
I got treasure in my chest
And the price is high for all the rest
Ain't no snake inside my wall
I won't be your voodoo doll
Baby I won't be your voodoo doll

Bahamas Cruise
On a cruise ship I did sail,
going to the Bahamas
remembering it well.
Listening to bands that played,
dance hits of their day,
That’s when the word
“happy” meant “gay”.
Taking photos on the deck,
eating lobster, shrimp and steak.
Raining when ship does land,
can not sunbathe on the sand.
Walking around to see the sights,
Bahama’s tote bag I did buy,
Along with 2 handmade
dolls pale and white.
One with black hair,
other with yellow.
One doll evil
other doll mellow.
Names “Razel” and “Melodie”
are sewn into each
separate doll,
in a craft like
looking mall.
Photos taken of dolls with me,
even Bahamian lady very pleased.
I put them in my Bahama’s tote,
More sightseeing before
getting on boat.
Walking around the town,
bargains everywhere to be found.
Now I will go back
some day again,
with a more interesting friend.

The Valley Road
While no one was looking on the old plantation
He took her all the way down the long valley road
They sent her away not too much later
Left him walking down the old valley road.
Sometimes I lead, sometimes I follow
This time Ill go where she wants me to go
She said maybe today, maybe tomorrow
Go deep in the woods down the long valley road
Walk on walk on little doll walk
Walkon little doll
Out in the hall they were talkin in a whisper
Everybody noticed she was gone a while
Somebody said she was gone to her sisters
Everyone knew what they were talkin about.
While no one was looking on the old plantation
He showed her what they do down the long valley road
Came back around like nothin really happened
Left him standing on the old valley road
Walk on walk on little doll walk on
Walk on little doll
Walk on, walk on the valley road
Standing like a stone on the old plantation
Rich old man wouldnt ever let him in
Good enough to hire, not good enough to marry
When it all happens, nobody wins
Walk on walk on little doll walk on
Walkon little doll etc

Unexpected Father.
Your mother
had brought Helen
home for tea after school
and she had held on
to the handle
of the pram
your mother pushed
and you walked
along side
thinking of whether
to show her
your toy soldiers
and cowboys and Indians
and the guns
that fired
loud banging caps
or whether to just sit
and watch the TV
and eat your tea
and show her nothing
but once you got home
and your mother went off
to the kitchen to prepare
the tea stuff and such
Helen looked at you
and shyly smiled
and said
Can I see your sister's dolls
and pram
and does she have
a doll's house
I could play with?
you dismissed the idea
of showing her
the guns that fired caps
or your toy soldier collection
and took her
into the room
where you kept the toys
and pointed to
your sister's dolls
and the pram
and said
Take care
my sister doesn't like
people messing
with her stuff
and Helen nodded
and picked up a doll
and held it to her chest
and rocked it
to and fro
and walked up and down
murmuring there there sounds
that echoed softly
around the room
Where's your sister?
Helen asked
will she mind me
rocking the baby to sleep?
Guess not
you replied
and stood watching her
as she walked
and talked to the doll
in an undertone
and you stood there
hands in pockets
like a father
of an unexpected child
wondering what to say
or do and taking in
her thick lens glasses
and her eyes
seemingly enlarged
focusing on the doll
and the way her head
moved from side to side
so that her plaited hair
went from side to side
and up and down
and she said softly
and suddenly
We may have a baby like this
one day and you had better
say something more
than you are now
or I'll think
you didn't want it
and off she walked
up and down the room
and hoped your mother
would come soon
and save you from the fate
of being the father
of a doll with a dodgy eye
and a painted smile
but having a tender spot
for Helen
all the while.

After School Tea.
Mother said
you were to go back
to Mrs Clark's house
for tea after school
and she would pick
you up later
after work
and so when
the bell went
for the end
of the school day
you went with Mrs Clark
and her daughter Helen
for tea and Mrs Clark
talked all the way
to her house
her words rough
as hewn stones
going over your head
to which you just nodded
or shook your head
and when you arrived
at the house
which smelt
of past dinners
and washing drying
and the baby's nappies
she said
What would you like for tea?
Bread and butter
bread jam
bread and Bovril
or dripping?
and how about
a large mug of tea?
Helen said
I'm having bread and jam
and a mug of tea
why don't you too?
you said
Yes that will be fine
and shyly sat in a chair
by the window
looking out
at the backyard
where washing hung
on a clothesline
and an old doll's pram
sat rusting by a wall
and Helen came
and sat next to you
in her grey skirt
and off white blouse
and swung her legs
back and forth
under the chair
her white ankle socks
and black scuffed shoes
coming in
and going out
of view
and she said
After tea
I'll show you my dolls
and the doll's house
my daddy made
out of orange boxes
and as Mrs Clark
made the tea
you sensed Helen's small hand
run along your arm
which set alarm bells ringing
in your head
and a sweating in your palm.

Body Talk
I can tell
By the way you stare at me
(talk):
Its deep...real deep
Your minds messed up
Words just dont come easily
(talk):
It should be natural
Your invitation...baby
Turned my head around
Quiet conversation
Language without sound
Body talk...work your body
Everybody let your body talk
Body talk...work your body
Everybody needs some body talk
The guy with me
Hes just a friend of mine
(talk)
Its purely platonic
So if youre tuff enuff
Baby step across the line
(talk)
Girlfriend dont bite
My imagination...baby
Bound to blow my mind
Body talk...work your body
Everybody let your body talk
Body talk...work your body
Everybody needs some body talk
Body talk
I can hear your body talk
Speak to me baby
Body talk
I can hear your body talk
Speak to me baby
Body talk
I can hear your body talk
Body talk
I can hear your body, body, body, body
Talk
I get the picture...baby
Come on over here
Your lips aint moving
But I hear you loud and clear
(chorus out)

Maybe I Was Damon In A Past Life
Maybe I was Damon Runyon in a past time
he died at age 66 which was the year I began my life.
I also write about someone I call the "Guy"
who maybe is kind of shy.
Damon wrote a play with Dolls & Guys
which was acted out in NYC—very true-not a lie.
I write about a Doll
who is cute and kind of small.
Damon also named his pet _____
almost like mine.
I write about a character with letter
beginning with N—
he was only a sponsor to me—
he wanted to be more than friends—
Just like Damon-
who writes about characters where
he actually supported them
in his writing he actually defends.
Damon also writes about baseball
I don't know baseball at all.
I am more of a poet who story-tells-
I write of the doll character nicknamed Mel.
See baseball is not my cup of tea—
but to Damon he was famous for
being a reporter known around the country.
