Thoughts of You
Today I saw a cat that reminded me of you,
it looked straight through me, just as you do.
After a indifferent glance it quickly turned away
with its nose in the air and with nothing to say.
Considering me as dirt, it vanished into the rain;
just as you did, never to be seen again.

Strangely Familiar
Today I saw a cat that reminded me of you.
It looked straight through me, just as you do.
with a nonchalant glance it then turned away,
its nose up in the air with nothing to say.
Considering me as dirt, it vanished in the rain,
and just like you I suppose, never to be seen again.

Friday
I crashed, I burned
But then I learned
To keep my eye on you
You always say
You'll lead the way
But then you never do
I slowed, I swerved
But lost my nerve
And quickly looked away
When I looked back
The day was black
Then I heard you say
Why is the sun hot?
Why does it rain?
Why is there danger and
Why is there pain?
Why can't the burden we carry go away?
And why isn't it Friday today?
Your lack of trust
Is hardly just
So do as you've been told
Please follow me
Into the sea
Don't worry if it's cold
I knew right then
My chance again
Had quickly slipped away
I crash I cry
I burn but I
Still follow anyway
Why is the sea cool?
Why is it blue?
Why do I stay here?
Why is is you
Notice the danger
But don't help in any way?
Why isn't it friday today?

Sinking Sun
The sun sank rapidly, and he liked looking straight,
So that the sun would dance and emit flames;
It brought an understanding to the forehead
About the burden attached to so few people.
With a quick glance the liking and loving desisted,
And assistance was required for the extraordinary;
The sun sank far too quickly today,
Far more than any one day.

A Poem Sliding Down the Glass-pane
I look around
And retrieve to
My regular corner
The glass widow
Overlooking the sky
Everyday
Every afternoon
I looked at the baked glass
With its coat of dirt
In expectation
The clear sky
Always giving me
An apologetic glance
Lo, this morning
As the clouds dimmed
The corner, hope revived
The sky didn't let me down
The rain lashed and lashed
The rain slid down the glass-pane
Like water droplets
On the freshly bathed skin!

Rain (II)
It thundered as if it would rain;
Appeared sultry as if to feign;
The Sky was clear but blue-black now;
It looked as if the Rain would come!
The clouds were dense and moved slowly;
Lightning patterned the Sky fiercely;
The Wind was almost absent now;
It looked as if the Rain would come!
The Birds were quiet and nested;
Awaiting the downpour, they rested;
The Monsoon was active for now;
It looked as if the Rain would come!
A few droplets of Rain did fall;
Atop the heads of people on stroll;
Afraid, each hurried to his home;
It looked as if the Rain would come!
The Rain did come! The Rain did come!
For once rightly, the Rain did come!

Nose
No one cares for the nose
To go nose straight is the tao
If there were no eyes
You could see better with your nose
If there were no nose
you wouldnot distinguish the sweet from the bitter
And there would be no value judgements in the world
And it is the nose that keeps you hot in the cold
And that keeps you cold in Jakodabad
The nose is the vigilant customs officer
That does not allow any drug to your lungs
And the nose cannot be bribed
Oh Nose! the customs officer of the body
And the pivot of value judgement in the world
If that name thou love
Remain with us and teach the noseless world
That it must have a nose in this wartorn world
He who knows the greatness of nose
Surely goes to the realm of rose
In the life to come
Hurrah Let us compose hymns to nose

Smelling the Day: Father and Son
Here is a time-tested weather rhyme:
'If with your nose you smell the day,
Stormy weather's on the way.'
There is the rhyme, and here is the reason:
As Andy Dappen wrote,
'Plants release oils into the atmosphere,
'And research indicates
That the higher the humidity,
The more oils the plants give off.
'This produces the distinctive odor
Many of us recognize when we say,
'Smells like rain today.''
When with his nose he smelled the day,
My father, a seasoned farmer, would say,
'Heads up, son! Smells like rain today.'

Ten Thousand Angels Cried
Stillness Filled The Heavens On Crucifixion Day
Some Say It Rained I Don't Know If It's True
Well I Can Just I'magine Ten Thousand Angels Cried
That Would Seem Like Rain To Me And You
The Angels All Stood Ready To Take Him From The Tree
They Waited For The Words From His Voice
And When He Asked The Father Why Has Thou Forsaken Me
They Watched The Saviour Die Of His Own Choice
I've Never Seen Ten Thousand Angels Cry
But I'm Sure They Did
As They Stood By
And Watched The Saviour Die
God Turned His Head Away
He Couldn't Bear The Sight
It Must Have Looked Like Rain
When Ten Thousand Angels Cried
As The Sun Slipped Away
The Skies Turned To Grey
And When Jesus Gave His All
That's When The Tears Began To Fall
I've Never Seen Ten Thousand Angels Cry
But I'm Sure They Did
As They Stood By
And Watched The Saviour Die
God Turned His Head Away
He Couldn't Bear The Sight
It Must Have Looked Like Rain
When Ten Thousand Angels Cried
It Must Have Looked Like Rain
When Ten Thousand Angels Cried

I heard an explosion today near our house. I was so scared that I got my gun quickly and looked for my uncle. Surprisingly, he was still asleep in his room. After I checked on him, I ran outside the house and there was smoke and dust everywhere. The stench of gunpowder tickled my nose horribly. I looked for dead people but couldn’t see anything or anyone because of the dust. When the dust lifted up, there were bodies and blood everywhere. At the corner of the building a block away from our house, I saw a familiar body lying on the ground. When I came closer, I realised that it was my friend, Ali, and he was... dead! I was so shocked that I ran into our house and did not leave my bed for the rest of the day. The only thing that I knew that time is that I HATE THIS LAND.

Melting Pot
many colored drops of rain,
as if the rainbow melted.
childrens' voices crying out,
different sounds, different languages.
all the same language.
millions of hands reaching for
a hand searching for a bridge.
hunger, need, and the emptiness
that drives, that prays, that bleeds.
all the same language.
kindred souls wrapped in fallen leaves,
that crumble, and return to dirt.
millions of eyes turned inward,
under the same sky, looking for tomorrow.
all the same language.
millions of eyes turned inward,
under the same sky, looking for today!
many colored drops of rain.
as if the rainbow melted.
all the same language.
all, speaking human!

Swines and the Rain
Rain sweeps dirt from the swines
No place they find to hide
In open field aimlessly they run a little
and back again
mother hog perhaps waits somewhere
swines are in rain now
rain has got new game to play today
rain and swine and an open field
Dancing air with furious velocity
And the horizon systematically
swelling light from surroundings
swines are now with fear
getting close together
no dirt with them
bloody faces become pale
but rain stops at a phase
scenario changes
in darkness
a mother hog
searching her littles
her footsteps they know very well
a sudden dart of returning home
the swines
chasing the darkness fiercely

The Soft Rain Today....
how i love
the rain today
ain't heavy
soft and gentle
falling on the grass
and on the side of the hill
this hair of nature
babe's soft whisper
hushing and dashing
like the sound of a young river
how i love the first rain
of the year today
comforting, indifferent
a sound of its own
whispering tears
allying fears.

Variations On A Text By Vallejo
Me moriré en Paris con aguacero ...
I will die in Miami in the sun,
On a day when the sun is very bright,
A day like the days I remember, a day like other days,
A day that nobody knows or remembers yet,
And the sun will be bright then on the dark glasses of strangers
And in the eyes of a few friends from my childhood
And of the surviving cousins by the graveside,
While the diggers, standing apart, in the still shade of the palms,
Rest on their shovels, and smoke,
Speaking in Spanish softly, out of respect.
I think it will be on a Sunday like today,
Except that the sun will be out, the rain will have stopped,
And the wind that today made all the little shrubs kneel down;
And I think it will be a Sunday because today,
When I took out this paper and began to write,
Never before had anything looked so blank,
My life, these words, the paper, the gray Sunday;
And my dog, quivering under a table because of the storm,
Looked up at me, not understanding,
And my son read on without speaking, and my wife slept.
Donald Justice is dead. One Sunday the sun came out,
It shone on the bay, it shone on the white buildings,
The cars moved down the street slowly as always, so many,
Some with their headlights on in spite of the sun,
And after awhile the diggers with their shovels
Walked back to the graveside through the sunlight,
And one of them put his blade into the earth
To lift a few clods of dirt, the black marl of Miami,
And scattered the dirt, and spat,
Turning away abruptly, out of respect.

I looked into the mirror today
I looked into the mirror today
and I just did not know what to say.
For the person looking back at me
was the person I'd turned out to be.
It was God's Word that I'd looked into
and was at a loss as to what to do.
Then, 'Come to me', I heard Jesus say
so to the cross I went straight away.
For sin had so disfigured my soul
and I needed Him to make me whole.
It required a miracle of grace
to remove all my wretched disgrace.
As I stood there feeling all my shame
I saw that He had taken the blame.
And His shed blood made me feel so clean.
The cleanest that I had ever been.
Yet I still sin in my stubborn pride
and His arms are there still open wide.
Why is it that I always delay
and don't gaze in that mirror each day?
Summer Rain Came Suddenly
Summer rain came suddenly
and you and she
had just got off the school bus
and had to run for shelter
and so entered the wood
and settled beneath some trees
which at least kept off
some of the rain
and as you both stood there
looking about the woodland
and listening to the rain
fighting its way through
the overhead branches and leaves
smelling the rain smell
hearing the sound
of rain falling
she said suddenly
That was unexpected
one minute the sun's shining
the next the downpour
and she turned
and looked at you
raindrops falling down
from her hair onto
the side of her nose
and sitting there
for a few moments
then sliding down
and moving along
her cheek
and you wiped
the drops off
with the end of your finger
and she took your finger
and mouthed it
and licked off the rain
and held your finger
in her hand
and said laughing
That was my raindropp
and you saw
how her lips parted
and in such a way
that you sensed
an inner explosion
of what you thought of
as love and said
Rain is rain
it's got its own smell
and touch
and feel
and she moved her lips
to your finger
and licked it once more
and you laughed
and felt your heart leap inside
and she said
releasing your finger
Love is love
something like rain
something you feel
and sense and know
and she kissed you and said
Mum' ll wonder where I am
we'd better go
and moving out
from beneath the trees
you ran off together
into the falling rain
all over again.

Light Rain
Today's been bad
The rain fell in torrents
Blighting out the sun behind sheets of wet
No light to be had in all the land
Today's been pretty bad
Though the rain foretells a usual cleansing
Today it only served to dampen my mood
Today was a bad day
And it heartens me to feel the twilight beckon
Today was bad
But the rain still serves to clean it
And I may go outside to dance
In the twilight
In the rain

Red Dirt Moments
So many red dirt moments
Are in my every day
A wonderful part of my life
It’s where I will always stay
Hollowed out in red dirt
Might be a refreshing pond
Surrounded by swishing trees
It’s a place where I’m so fond
I see a farmhouse nestled
Amongst the red dirt land
Wheat fields ripe and ready
So proud of the way it stands
A Mail Pouch barn is unique
Takes us back in time
Another Red Dirt Moment
Such precious ones I find
Summer roses pure and true
The colors so soft and sweet
I press one to my nose
Breathe in a luscious treat
So you see my life is perfect
I have nothing else I need
So many Red Dirt Moments
Am I lucky? Oh yes, indeed!

Harry's Circumcision
Looking in the mirror Harry didn't like what he saw
The cheeks of his mother the eyes of his father
As each day crashed around him the future stood revealed
He was turning into his parents
The final disappointment
Stepping out of the shower Harry stared at himself
His hairline receding the slight overbite
He picked up the razor to begin his shaving
and thought oh I wish I was different
I wish I was stronger I wish I was thinner
I wish I didn't have this nose
These ears that stick out remind me of my father
and I don't want to be reminded at all
The final disappointment
Harry looked into the mirror thinking of Vincent Van Gogh
and with a quick swipe lopped off his nose
And happy with that he made a slice where his chin was
He's always wanted a dimple
The end of all illusion
Then peering down straight between his legs
Harry thought of the range of possibilities
A new face a new life no memories of the past
and slit his throat from ear to ear
Harry woke up with a cough the stitches made his wince
A doctor smiled at him from somewhere across the room
Son we saved your life but you'll never look the same
And when he heard that, Harry had to laugh
Although it hurt Harry had to laugh
The final disappointment

Lovers
Love's a poor shelter, whatever you say,
The cover flaps in the wind,
rain gets in the ceiling,
Yet here we come to kindle
In a loving gesture or a glance
A little warmth beneath the hungry stars.
While overhead there stretches a vast sky,
stony, infinite,
And utterly indifferent to our brief ecstasy.

I so rarely turned down a role, that I can't say I have any regrets in that regard. There were many roles that I would rather not have done, but having a home and family requires that we sometimes do things we would rather not. I have done a few roles that I've never watched, and if I happen to be flicking through channels and one pops up, I quickly move on. It's hard enough to sustain some self confidence without being reminded of things we'd rather not revisit but, in the end, it comes with the territory.
