Neighbours

The house across the road, number 104
has new windows and a stained glass door.
It's two months since a young couple moved in
working hard and tirelessly renovating.

I think they're about finished, it looks complete,
and it takes its place with the best on the street.
Yesterday the young man fitted an outside light
to add the finishing touch, and it looks just right.

At bedtime this evening as I was about to get into bed
the drawn bedroom curtains looked unusually red.
I pulled them aside and to my complete surprise
a red light shone bright before my eyes.

The next day I could no longer suffer in silence,
so asked my neighbour if he knew of its significance.
Fortunately he didn't and quickly replaced the bulb of red,
leaving all the street to sleep much happier in bed.

The Street Only Knew Your Name

Your street, rich street or poor
You should always be sure of your street
There's a place in your heart,
When you know from the start
And you can't be complete without a street
Keep movin' on, just like a train
Sometimes you gotta look back to the street again
Would you prefer all those castles in spain
Or a view of the street from your window pane
When you were young, so young
So very very young
When you were young, so young
So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name, oh your precious name, precious name
There was walter and joy, kate and roy
All hung around the corner lamplight
Get together sing some songs
Like boppin' the blues - you make me feel alright
That was long before fortune and fame
No such thing as a star when you've played that game
Everyone knew who everyone was
There was no preference in the street no, no
When you were young, so young
So very very young
When you were young, so young
So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name, oh your precious name
And you walked around in the heart of town
Listening for that sound
And you walk around in the heart of town
Listening for that sound
Blue suede shoes, it was the blue suede shoes
When you were young, so young
So very very young
When you were young, so young
So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name

Dolly and the Salesman

There's a salesperson at the door
someone said
and so you went to the door
and there was the young salesman

with a book in his hand
and in a sharp grey suit
and hair neat and short cut
yes?

you said
I represent Carson's stores
and it has been brought
to my notice

that you are behind
with your payments
is that so?
you said

yes
the young guy said
three months behind
and if you don't pay today

the item you have chosen to buy
will be removed
is that so?
you said

the young guy looked
into his book of figures
and script
so you called out

Dolly there's a young guy here
who says we owe him money
you both waited
while Dolly came to the door

what do we owe?
she asked
money
the young guy said

what for?
Dolly said
a vacuum cleaner
the young guy said

you are three months behind
now if you do not pay up today
it will be removed
Dolly raised her eyebrows

and put on her
don't mess with me face
and went off
the young guy

and you looked
at each other in silence
after a few minutes
Dolly returned

carrying the vacuum cleaner
here
she said
here's your darn Hoover

take the thing
and go stick it
where the sun
don't shine

and so the young man
held up the vacuum cleaner
and looked at you
and Dolly

and said
right don't come back
to the store
because you won't

be served again
and off he went
out along the road
in the falling black rain.

In Your Eyes

Love
I get so lost sometimes
Days pass
And this emptiness fills my heart
When I want to run away,
I drive off in my car,
But whichever way I go,
I come back to the place you are
And all my instincts
They return
And this grand facade
So soon will burn
Without a noise and without my pride
I reach out from the inside
Oh-oh
Woah-oh...
In your eyes
The light, the heat
I am complete
I see the doorway
To a thousand churches
The resolution to all my fruitless searches
Oh, I see the light, I see the heat
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light, the heat I see in your eyes
Love
I don't like to see so much pain
So much wasted
And these moments keep slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for my survival,
I look to the time with you
To keep me awake and alive
And all my instincts
They return
And the grand facade
So soon will burn
Without a noise and without my pride
I reach out from the inside
Oh-oh
In your eyes
The light, the heat
I am complete
I see the doorway
To a thousand churches
The resolution of all my fruitless searches
Oh, I see the light, I see the heat
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light, the heat I see in your eyes
In your eyes, oh...
In your eyes, oh, in your eyes.
In your eyes oh....

Our street light

there we would sit
under the street light
free from the dark
just you and me
having a laugh

talking bout the good times
talking bout the bad
however messed up our lives were
watever pain we were in
the street light would heal us and set us free again
it was our getaway
it was our thing

the street light brought us together
the street light brought us the end
i still remember that street light like that special glow you had my friend

the street light brought us fun
the street light brought us love
the street light brought us warmth as we lay and look at the stars above

i was happy under the street light
as i knew you were too
comforting each other was all we used to do
the street light may be faded
the street light may be dull
but lets just remember the street light kept us going strong!

Japan

I saw a young man by a telephone
He was sitting alone in the rain
I said, hey, young man what you doing here?
He said, sir, Im going insane
See I love an american beauty
But nobody here understands
So he looked to the sky with resentment in his eyes
And said, lord, why am I in japan?
Lord why am I in japan?
He told me a story about yesterday
How he walked in the search of a friend
But nobody came to his rescue
So he came to his bitter end
He pulled me close and said
They all stopped and stared
As I walked down the street alone
And nobody knew my name
Nobody knew my name
I said, young man I know where youre going
And young man I know where youve been
But Ive been in this land for a lifetime, it seems,
And Im never to come back again
No, Im never to come back again
So I turned and I gave him my blessing
And I left him alone in the rain
But I had to just stop and laugh at myself
Still nobody knows my name
Nobody knows my name

accepting all i've done and said

Ooh

The Ouija Board

In Holmewood a quiet mining village in North Derbyshire
where the terraced houses were still owned by the mine.
There lived a young ex-miner with his wife and children,
and Dennis the father hadn’t worked for sometime.

Concrete floors were laid downstairs because of subsidence,
they had no curtains, carpets, television, or hi-fi.
All their money went on rent, food, and paying bills,
Vera was unhappy, but Dennis couldn’t understand why.

She wanted to move away from the village to Derby,
where opportunities knocked on every ones door.
But Dennis was accustomed to the hardships of mining
and moving away didn’t have the same draw.

He always persuaded Vera that things would get better
and a kiss and cuddle covered his incompetence.
All his ex-miner cronies were in the same boat,
and working for a living to him made no sense.

He’d become lazy and didn’t want the hassle of a new life
unlike many ex-miners who had moved to pastures new.
Many of the young families who rented their houses
were tied to the mine and didn’t know what else to do.

At the end of the main street was the village’s nearest pit,
and on any shift any miner could die.
Throughout the years many men had lost their lives,
and their bodies in the cemetery lie.

The miners’ widows very often came to see Vera
to ask if she would make contact with their dead.
She felt for the community and turned no one away,
and their gratitude helped to pay for the bread.

One night she would organise six people to be together,
in the unlit empty room at the top of the stairs.
Carrying a lit candle, an empty glass and Ouija board,
she would arrange the table and six fold down chairs.

The home made Ouija board lay flat on the table
and in the middle was the upturned glass.
As everyone placed their index finger on the top of it,
Vera whispered for silence for what was about to pass.

They waited whist the candle flame danced and flickered,
again she whispered, “Is anyone there? ”
As the glass moved to letters on the board’s pencilled alphabet,
a confirmation brought a chill to the air.

Vera never once failed to make spiritual contacts,
but always stopped when the ‘evil’ came through.
Whenever the spiritual highway became opened
the same forceful ‘evil’ presence became renewed.

It was obvious they didn’t return and close the highway,
they stayed in the room that was turning black.
Dennis admitted they should move away from the ‘evil’,
because Vera could not to send them back.

The ‘evil ones’ became restless and moved furnishings,
it was frightening and getting worse each night.
Then for no apparent reason the ‘evil’ ones went quiet,
for over six weeks the peace was pure delight.

They hoped their haunting was over and they had gone for good.
Weeks later Vera had a visit from her cousin who was blind.
She hadn’t seen her, or her guide-dog ‘Eyes’ for over a year.
Whilst talking, ‘Eyes’ went upstairs and they paid it no mind.

An open door slammed behind the dog which shook the house,
and filled Dennis with panic, as Vera dashed upstairs.
She tried to enter the bedroom, but the door wouldn’t budge,
Vera shouted, but Dennis was outside, glad to be out of there.

‘Eyes’ was howling and scratching the floor trying to get out,
a split second later Vera heard the sound of breaking glass.
She raced down stairs into the street below the bedroom window;
‘Eyes’ lay still and bleeding amongst the glass he smashed.

‘Eyes’ began to whimper as its wounds seeped with blood,
Vera could hardly speak, as her cousin asked about ‘Eyes’.
‘Eyes’ thankfully recovered, and the family moved to Derby.
The new life was fine until the Ouija was again given a try.

Dream Fable

I saw myself in a wide green garden, more beautiful than I could begin to understand. In this garden was a young girl. I said to her, "How wonderful this place is!"

"Would you like to see a place even more wonderful than this?" she asked.

"Oh yes," I answered. Then taking me by the hand, she led me on until we came to a magnificent palace, like nothing that was ever seen by human eyes. The young girl knocked on the door, and someone opened it. Immediately both of us were flooded with light.

Only Allah knows the inner meaning of the maidens we saw living there. Each one carried in her hand a serving-tray filled with light. The young girl asked the maidens where they were going, and they answered her, "We are looking for someone who was drowned in the sea, and so became a martyr. She never slept at night, not one wink! We are going to rub funeral spices on her body."

"Then rub some on my friend here," the young girl said.

"Once upon a time," said the maidens, "part of this spice and the fragrance of it clung to her body -- but then she shied away."

Quickly the young girl let go of my hand, turned, and said to me:

"Your prayers are your light;
Your devotion is your strength;
Sleep is the enemy of both.
Your life is the only opportunity that life can give you.
If you ignore it, if you waste it,
You will only turn to dust."

Then the young girl disappeared.

Green Flower Street

Uptown
Its murder out in the street
Uptown
Its murder out in the street
Thats where I found my mandarin plum
Thats where youd be if you found one
Where the nights are bright
And joy is complete
Keep my squeeze on green flower street
Since may
Theres trouble most every night
Where once we danced our sweet routine
It reeks of wine and kerosene
Where the nights are bright
And joy is complete
Keep my squeeze on green flower street
Theres a special place for lovers
One we understand
There where neon bends in daylight sky
In that sunny room she soothes me
Cools me with her fan
Were drifting
A thousand years roll by
Lou chang
Her brother hes burning with rage
Lou chang
Her brother hes burning with rage
Id like to know whats on his mind
He says hey buddy youre not my kind
Where the nights are bright
And joy is complete
Keep my squeeze on green flower street

At the time...

A car pulled up, in front of a house, at four o'clock in the morning.
A man came out of the car, and stood in silence in the dark, dark dark.
Quiet as a mouse, a woman came out of the house, opened the gate and walked into a garbage bin, making a godawful clattering.

Drowsy neighbours, across the road, peeked out
from behind the nosy curtains of their boring bedroom.
But nothing happened, while the clouds moved on,
and the frail moonlight was well again.

Under a blanket of glittering stars, she handed him two suitcases
and he hurried 'round to open the boot but just then,
the toilet lights on the second floor came on.

The neighbours behind the curtains froze like statues.
Swiftly, the man and the woman crouched down behind the car.
In the quiet of the night, they could all hear the urine
gurgling long, loud and plenty into the toilet bowl.

Behind the car, the man and the woman started
groping and kissing and groping and kissing furiously.
The neighbours saw them do it by the light of the moon and stars.

When the toilet flushed, they quietly shut the boot,
tiptoed to the front, got into the car,
and the roar of the car engine died away.

The neighbours closed the curtains. Didn't say much.
Ate sandwiches and milk. Still couldn't sleep.
Started to make love loudly, as if to drown out forever
the drunken snoring beginning again
across the road.

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

The House On Centerville Road

We stopped beside the highway
And gazed at the old house
I told my wife, “That’s where I lived”
When I was just a little sprout
It looked smaller than it once did
Back so many years ago
Even then it was old and creaky
But, as a kid, I didn’t know
Weathered boards were loose and falling
Saplings grew up through the porch
The old tin roof was rusted orange
And the yard looked like a forest
Here dwells my oldest memories
From so many years ago
When our young family lived here
In the house on Centerville road

Those walls once rang with laughter
And the energy of two young lads
Riding stick horses all around the place
Trying to “herd” our collie, Pat
But, Pat knew more than we did
When she’d hear Mama shout
She’d turn us back from the road
And herd two boys toward the house
Dad got a job and we moved to town
Well before I started school
So, my memories are short and sketchy
But, I’ve found there are quite a few
My wife retrieved her camera
And as I turned the key to go
Snapped a picture from her window
Of the house on Centerville road

Stories Of Hope Series #12 Forsaken

My heart was forsaken by the one I loved
She said my love wasn’t good enough.
If I truly loved her I would give her the material things
Necklaces, pearls, and diamond rings.
She said that love is in the giving
Without these things life is not worth living.

That’s when I decided to change my tune
I couldn’t get away too soon.
I took my heart and hid it deep in my chest
And to protect it I would do my best.
I became like a zombie- mindless and blank
And my heart I did forsake.

Surrounded by people that I did not see
Feeling hurt and angry as can be.
Friends and family started to pull away.
there was nothing left for them to say.

Then I was walking home from work one night
I glanced down the street, there was this
Woman rubbing her feet.
As I got closer I could see that her ankle
Was as swollen as can be.

Can I help you? Do you need a hand?
She answered: well! “If you could
Help me try to stand.”
Her foot so swollen she screamed in pain
Trying to walk would be in vain.

I asked her: where do you live?
She said: “up the block- the house on the corner
On the second floor.”
I knew that she could not walk no more.

I swooped her up in my arms, and started down the street
The smell of her perfume delicious and sweet.
I had never really looked at her face until then
She had light brown hair, and eyes as well
When I felt my heart begin to swell.
A smile from ear to ear, and of me she had no fear.

I carried her all the way home, and up the steps
To her door. (I felt as if I had been here before)
I asked: do you need a hand to get in?
She looked at me with a grin.
She said: you carried me this far, if you’d like
Some coffee, I’ll open the jar.”

I opened the door and carried her to a chair
The apartment looked small and comfortable
And quite fair.
I said: I’ll make the coffee! You just sit and rest
I’m not good at this, but I’ll do my best.
I made the coffee and we sat and talked
Time passed by quickly and we didn’t know
That the sun was coming up, and it was time to go.
The sun shone thru the blinds creating reflections
On the mirrored wall.
Prisms of light surrounded our faces
And we saw our faces all aglow
It was truly amazing and quite a show.
I asked her if I could see her again
And hopefully become more than a friend.
She said: I would really like that to.
So I told her I will call on you.
My heart had finally become free, and took me
Out of this misery.
For six months we dated and enjoyed each others company
The riches I gave her, she gave back to me.
Love has no price, but yet worth more than gold
And it is something that we can truly hold.
Not in our hands but in our hearts, and it becomes the biggest part.
We had become more than friends, and I guess you know the end.
HOPE IS THE KEY TO SET OURSELVES FREE.

Empty Streets

The town is quiet, empty
Street lights cast shadows
In doorways and windows
Curtains drawn, people sleeping
A night rain is falling fast
Through the amber halos of street lights
Lighting the roads and pathways
There is not a soul to be seen or heard
The parked cars line up colourless
The dull reflection of a shop window
Offers little comfort in passing
A stray cat sits ahead in some shade
Staring intent before running away
Into the empty night gone
What little wind there is, cold
A car passes, unknown passengers
The temporary warming light
Soon gone disappeared
Hand fishing for keys in pockets
Through a door into shade
The empty streets replaced

The Fear

A lantern light from deeper in the barn
Shone on a man and woman in the door
And threw their lurching shadows on a house
Near by, all dark in every glossy window.
A horse's hoof pawed once the hollow floor,
And the back of the gig they stood beside
Moved in a little. The man grasped a wheel,
The woman spoke out sharply, 'Whoa, stand still!'
'I saw it just as plain as a white plate,'
She said, 'as the light on the dashboard ran
Along the bushes at the roadside-a man's face.
You must have seen it too.'
'I didn't see it.
Are you sure--'
'Yes, I'm sure!'
'-it was a face?'
'Joel, I'll have to look. I can't go in,
I can't, and leave a thing like that unsettled.
Doors locked and curtains drawn will make no difference.
I always have felt strange when we came home
To the dark house after so long an absence,
And the key rattled loudly into place
Seemed to warn someone to be getting out
At one door as we entered at another.
What if I'm right, and someone all the time-
Don't hold my arm!'
'I say it's someone passing.'
'You speak as if this were a travelled road.
You forget where we are. What is beyond
That he'd be going to or coming from
At such an hour of night, and on foot too.
What was he standing still for in the bushes?'
'It's not so very late-it's only dark.
There's more in it than you're inclined to say.
Did he look like--?'
'He looked like anyone.
I'll never rest to-night unless I know.
Give me the lantern.'
'You don't want the lantern.'
She pushed past him and got it for herself.
'You're not to come,' she said. 'This is my business.
If the time's come to face it, I'm the one
To put it the right way. He'd never dare-
Listen! He kicked a stone. Hear that, hear that!
He's coming towards us. Joel, go in-please.
Hark!-I don't hear him now. But please go in.'
'In the first place you can't make me believe it's--'
'It is-or someone else he's sent to watch.
And now's the time to have it out with him
While we know definitely where he is.
Let him get off and he'll be everywhere
Around us, looking out of trees and bushes
Till I sha'n't dare to set a foot outdoors.
And I can't stand it. Joel, let me go!'
'But it's nonsense to think he'd care enough.'
'You mean you couldn't understand his caring.
Oh, but you see he hadn't had enough-
Joel, I won't-I won't-I promise you.
We mustn't say hard things. You mustn't either.'
'I'll be the one, if anybody goes!
But you give him the advantage with this light.
What couldn't he do to us standing here!
And if to see was what he wanted, why
He has seen all there was to see and gone.'
He appeared to forget to keep his hold,
But advanced with her as she crossed the grass.
'What do you want?' she cried to all the dark.
She stretched up tall to overlook the light
That hung in both hands hot against her skirt.
'There's no one; so you're wrong,' he said.
'There is.-
What do you want?' she cried, and then herself
Was startled when an answer really came.
'Nothing.' It came from well along the road.
She reached a hand to Joel for support:
The smell of scorching woollen made her faint.
'What are you doing round this house at night?'
'Nothing.' A pause: there seemed no more to say.
And then the voice again: 'You seem afraid.
I saw by the way you whipped up the horse.
I'll just come forward in the lantern light
And let you see.'
'Yes, do.-Joel, go back!'
She stood her ground against the noisy steps
That came on, but her body rocked a little.
'You see,' the voice said.
'Oh.' She looked and looked.
'You don't see-I've a child here by the hand.'
'What's a child doing at this time of night--?'
'Out walking. Every child should have the memory
Of at least one long-after-bedtime walk.
What, son?'
'Then I should think you'd try to find
Somewhere to walk--'
'The highway as it happens-
We're stopping for the fortnight down at Dean's.'
'But if that's all-Joel-you realize-
You won't think anything. You understand?
You understand that we have to be careful.
This is a very, very lonely place.
Joel!' She spoke as if she couldn't turn.
The swinging lantern lengthened to the ground,
It touched, it struck it, clattered and went out.

Sketches For A Fine Day

actually i like the sound of
brooms sweeping the street today

a young girl
short for her age
and brown and
bow legged

does her assigned task in the street
gathering dead leaves

as i watch
it is a bright day

the street light is turned off

a young boy's hand is held by her mother
crossing the street
waiting for the school bus

a white dog pisses
on the side of the trunk of the
mahogany tree

a black car from the right side of the village
wheels its way towards the boulevard

a young woman with short blue jeans
jogs along the green valley

the sea is sky
blue and the sun slowly rises from the horizon

like a man's face peeping upon a table's edge
the long line of trees along the faded street

I Saw The Light

(wally bryson/eric carmen)
Good friends
Book ends
Solitaire for two
Till she was leaving
I never really knew
When I looked in her eyes
I saw the light
I realized all along it was her
When I looked in her eyes
I saw the light
I realized
Theres a knock on the door
Then youre home forever more
And now that youre here
There is nothing to fear
When I looked in her eyes
I saw the light
I realized all along it was her
When I looked in her eyes
I saw the light
I realized all along it was her.
When I looked in her eyes
I saw the light
I realized all along it was her

The Marvelous Toy

When I was just a wee little lad, full of health and joy
My father homeward came one night and gave to me a toy.
A wonder to behold it was with many colors bright
And the moment I laid eyes on it, it became my hearts delight.
It went zip when it moved and bop when it stopped whirrrrr when it stood
Still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.
The first time that I picked it up I had a big surprise.
For right on its bottom were two big buttons that looked like big green eyes.
I first pushed one and then the other, then I twisted its lid.
And when I set it down again, this is what it did.
It went zip when it moved and bop when it stopped whirrrrr when it stood still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.
It first marched left and then marched right, then marched under a chair
And when I looked where it had gone it wasnt even there.
I started to cry but my daddy laughed cause he knew that I would find.
When I turned around my marvelous toy would be chugging from behind.
It went zip when it moved and bop when it stopped and whirrrrr when it stood
Still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.
The years have gone by too quickly it seems, I have my own little boy.
And yesterday I gave to him my marvelous little toy
His eyes nearly popped right out of his head and he gave a squeal of glee...
Neither one of us knows just what it is but he loves it just like me.
It still goes zip when it moves and bop when it stops, whirrrrr when it
Stands still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

Evening Out

It all kind of fell into place
the dame’s face
the hair colour
the way she swayed

and the accent
of her voice
seemed to jog
your mind awake

yes she’d been quite a dame
and had been on your arm
at the fair
and you’d had a good time

and she’d laughed
and hugged your arm numb
and you kissed
and walked her home

and she said not to make
too much noise
as her old man was upstairs
and he never seemed to trust

guys she went out with
and how many guys
have you been out with?
You asked

looking up at the window
where no light shone
and she replied
Oh just a few

I’m not a darn hooker you know
I’ve just had a few men
here and there
and you wondered

where the here and there was
and how far did she go
with those guys
and she said

look I’ve only had sex
a couple of times
and that was usually over
in the time it takes

to say hullabaloo
and anyway she said
how about you?
You noticed the light go on

up in the bedroom
and whispered
got to go
your old man’s about

and it was a swell evening
and you’re my fourth dame
this month
and I’ve had sex more times

than you can say hullabaloo
and she stood there and stared
and her jaw dropped
and you walked away

beneath bright stars
and full moon
not a moment too late
not a second too soon.

HER EYES KNEW THE WAY (Ode to Love)

A full moon bathed her
tranquil form in silver light
This playful orb would only
dance on her this night…

Hesitant I knew desire
was the bane of zealous lovers
Yet eagerly I reached down
moved aside the satin covers

She sensed my presence
awoke then moved to rise,
A moan exhaled parted lips
as she opened sleepy eyes

With eyes blue as glacier ice
she smiled, reached for me
I held her dainty hands in mine
and kissed them tenderly

Forever came and went
we held a tight embrace
My head did spin and
heart began to race

At last we pulled apart
I looked into her eyes,
What happened next was
strange, yet no surprise

Within the depth of her eyes
I beheld her very soul
For the first time in my life
I felt complete and whole

An aura encircled me
flooding me with light
I felt a flash, then heat,
felt my soul ignite

Fire on fire as two
souls fused into one
A war against loneliness
had finally been won...

Girl from Arkansas...by Talile Ali

hitchin a ride
late at nite
very tired
don't feel right
see a car
right along

as it stops
i run up
hop right in
bit shook up
see a lady
'anything wrong? '

i say that
i'. travelin along
she say's 'kinda late'
'on the road on your own? '
i just smile
she then grabs my bone

as my eyes began
to spin in my head
she goes down upon me
and works the ol lead
until i'm etheral
inside her head

as my eyes
begin to close
i feel her hands
undo my clothes

her hands are as skillful
and twice as nice
as she continues
paradise

i start smiling
i confess
she consumed
all of my flesh

we did things
i never knew before
and we began
to role out the door

into the woods
deep in the grass
all i could see
was a flash of ass

hump and bump
grind and spin
we were the definition
of complete bliss in sin

minute to hour
so we played
when she had finished
i knew i was laid

we both cuddled
then we got dressed
she looked at me
and said i was the best

then we road
a bit and more
she finally pulled over
and i opened the door

i looked in her face
and told her my name
she laughed a little then
she said 'hope i see you again'

as she took off
all that i saw
was the tail lights
of that girl from Arkansas
