The Wet Monkey l

Nothing like that had ever happened before
at Casa Verde-the name Aunt Salome gave it
soon after it was built, all of native mahogany
with a no-more-than-expected number of windows,
so why the name I'm not exactly sure,

Unless you count the time the anaconda got in-
not a very big one, but feisty all the same,
with a fine sleek head, breathing scales, a slide-out pink tongue
and soft, sable-on-ochre markings looking like infinity signs.
It seemed to scrawl its name in the shallow pool
'anaconda, anaconda' starting ripples up
that doused themselves out at the rim,
til it slithered up the dropped-in stick ladder
and quickly disappeared toward the forest,
flattening the grass as it swam.

But this was different: a mammal.
How did I get mixed up in it?
Well I heard the whole thing from the start,
beginning with a splash, a little wet kiss sound
about 5 am, followed by a silence-milliseconds,
then a white-faced cry,
which could have come from a child,
followed by a terrified gulp
issued from a warm-blooded gullet, I supposed.

Mindless of the chill (jungle-mornings get cool)
I leapt to the window wearing not a stitch....

wearing not a stitch and peered over the palm trees
at the gray sky lit pink by the coming-up sun,
as the birds chattered indifferently. The green walls
of Casa Verde stood on the edge of a rain forest
dark at that hour but livened here and there,
sometime by a orange-yellow flash,
a jungle bird whose name escapes me now
capering the treetops.

The pool dreamed-an aquamarine in a tile bezel
azure water slapping its sides
turbulence with no clear source.
Something told me there was no time to waste;
Wrapping myself in the sheet, I raced downstairs
into the yard, over the wet grass
and through the picket gate to the pool's edge
where the cause of the noise became clear.

An intrepid monkey-foolish and young-hoping to cop a drink
had tumbled into the spill
Now monkeys can't swim-don't ask why, it's true:
that's why you've never seen one doing the crawl.
Arboreal, maybe they don't care to learn.
In any case, this one, true to type, couldn't.
As kids we were taught to be monkey-wary
they're not friendly and carry disease.
But here was a monkey....

Anaconda

The giant anaconda’s scales glint, gleam.
serpentining slowly in between
branch overhang of some piranha stream.
Strength selection studied shows in gene
through evolution’s jungle grey, brown, green -
that, sunlit, on reflection, golden seem.
Gravely swaying, swathed in glistening sheen,
she undulates through undergrowth, is seen
sliding with tongue fork-hair,
gliding over there,
where a great gurgling geyser
ceaselessly hisses steam.
Though modern, South American, this scene
a prehistoric portrait might have been
when taken in the context of ringed layer
on layer of suitors curling round spawn glair…
How can she judge between them, how compare?

Salome

Baby please
Baby please dont go
I got lies to feed
They want skin and seed
And dont make me crawl
Please
Baby dont bite your lip
Give you half what I got
If you untie the knot
Its a promise
Salome...salome
Shake it shake it shake it salome
Shake it shake it shake it salome
Salome...shake it shake it shake it salome
Baby please
Baby whats that tune
Well I heard it before
When I crawled from your door
And my blood turned blue
Please
Baby please slow down
Baby I feel sick
Dont make me stick to my promise
Salome...salome
Shake it shake it shake it salome
Shake it shake it shake it salome
Salome...shake it shake it shake it salome
Salome...shake it shake it shake it salome
Baby please
Baby dont say no
Wont you dance for me
Under the cherry tree
Wont you swing down low
Please
Baby please say yes
Baby dont go away
Youre spilling me
And your precious love
Salome...salome
Shake it shake it shake it salome
Shake it shake it shake it salome
Salome...shake it shake it shake it salome
Salome...shake it shake it shake it salome
Salome...shake it shake it shake it salome

Sugar Curls

You can count the stars
and the count will be incomplete.

You can count times
I've looked for you
in dreams
I've dreamed.

You can count the hours
I've marked,
my stomach knotting
etching time across my heart
since I've seen your face.

I know how many steps
to your house;
your phone number backwards;

the colors in your eyes,

how many sighs
I make
looking at your photograph.

If there in a number to infinity
then you can see me circling back;

starting again infinitely.

Lower me down to deepest depths
count my fathoms there
plumb these and more
for our ocean is endlessly
deep.

How many grains in beachy sand?
I know having sifted each.

What is the size of this love for you?
There is no count of instances,
for that is a number which cannot be reached.

Simply put
you count with me;
together we
count twice infinitely.

Oh so sweet
are the sugar
grains
whose white dotted
fractals
swirl
in our hearts;

rotating
Love Curls

circling
endlessly.

House Of Salome

Written by ricky & marty wilde
Shadows run in the heat of the desert
Hands beat at the door
Someone stands and calls
For the name of salome
As the veils were pushed away
He gazed upon a face
Hed never seen
Was she a dream ?
He heard the sound from a distance voice
Youd better watch out!
Youd better watch out!
He heard the sound from a thousand years
Calling out
Calling out
In the house of salome
You have to surrender
Run with her said the young handmaiden
She will be your queen
All your life youll live
In the dream of salome
Take her mouth and with your hands
Just kiss her painted lips
Dont you make a move
till salome calls you
As the music danced around the desert night
He smelt her perfumed skin
As they made love
He heard the sound of a distant voice
Youd better watch out!
Youd better watch out!
He heard the sound of a thousand years
Calling out
Calling out
In the house of salome
You have to surrender

Butterfly

everything is interrelated
nothing is
compartmentalized

thus
when the butterfly in China dies
the bear in Russia also suffers

when the monkey in the Philippines
falls short of the banana
the anaconda of Brazil becomes sterile

when the tiger of Africa kills
the parrot in Paraguay feels

everything is interrelated
nothing is a stone
no one is a creek
we are all one river.

Ravenous Bill

Oh! a terrible glutton was "Ravenous Bill,"
Mate of the good ship "Whippoorwill;"
And seldom it was he could get his fill;

A fact he oft would mention.

And many a time, when eating his beef,
Would the captain tell him to "take a reef;"
But to such requests he ever was "deaf,"

This being a bone of contention.

He cheated the sailors out of their prog,
Nor left e'en a scrap for the captain's dog:
He was such a gourmand and terrible "hog,"

That he'd" eat you out of your house."

He thought no more of a leg of ham,
A peck of potatoes, and shoulder of lamb,
With all the "fixin's," — wine, jellies, and jam,-

Than a cat would think of a mouse.

At length, on distant Southern sands
The vessel was stranded; and all the hands
Were captured by some of the savage bands

Who lived on that foreign coast.

Poor Bill was taken among the rest,
And became at once a cannibal's guest;
(No pleasant position, it must be confessed,
To wake up some morning already " dressed"

For a native's " fancy roast.")

For want of rations Bill had grown thin,-
Nothing, in fact, but bones and skin;
And his heathen master (as ugly as sin,
To find he'd so badly been " taken in")

Devised a horrible plan.

To wit: a bamboo cage he'd make,
And put in Bill, with a monstrous snake
Called the anaconda, that could easily " take"

Most any "reasonable" man.

At last 'twas finished, — the cage was done;
The snake was captured, — a monstrous one:
The natives assembled to see the " fun,"
And "settle their Bill" they said, as a pun,
"Referring to the "collation."

Our hero was thrust into the cage
Where the snake was coiling itself with rage,
Eager and waiting its prey to engage,—
An engaging occupation.

As Bill and the snake met face to face,
He was folded at once in its close embrace;
And the natives, thinking he'd "ran his race,"

Began on his fate to ponder;

When — what d'ye suppose first met their eyes
As the dust from the scene did slowly rise,
They found that Bill, to their great surprise,
Had SWALLOWED THE ANACONDA!

How Bird and Frog Finish Up

All was fine in the forest.
Sun beams glistening
through the trees
Stillness all around,
everything as it should be.
Lonely in his pond frog had
resigned to never being loved.
He saw the deers
going about in pairs
Even raccoons had families,
females by the scores
But nair a frogess anywhere
would respond
to the most practiced ribbit.
I guess as frogs go
he was much a horny toad.
So he sat alone
in his tepid mossy pond.

On an average morn
in the glistening beams
of forest floor,
with his eyes practically
atop his head,
he spotted a beautiful creature
he knew he must wed!
Graceful, swift, slim,
with the song of a crane,
she gave him the hops
something fierce!
He began to croak
knowing usually this led
to nothing more than a joke
on his bestead.
But he sang his gullet out
to gain the attention of
his intended wife.

Swooping down he feared
with a peck and one gulp,
she would turn him down by
making breakfast of him.
Stead she chirped a reply
to his shocking glee,
he understood her
he could not deny
was an astounding
“I really dig you”
With you slick green skin,
bumpy tattoos,
pretty song you sing for me.
I swoon until the noon,
None of the other birds
do it for me like you do,
Hence I have been single
without an egg to roost
and never a feather plucked
by a green hot bird”

Then beak to gullet
he laid it on her
No dumb frog
he wasn’t letting
a sexy bird get away!
A kiss that the forest
could not understand.
But the beginning
of a great romance.
The mossy curtain
was pulled.

Not long after a shingle
was pecked, hung
Mr. and Mrs. Frogbird’s pond
“If it be a splashin‘,
no camera flashin‘,
and don’t be trashin’
our strange love.'

For many years to come
frog and bird
will get it done.

Casa Dega

Well the clouds go by in the big blue sky
As the sun beats down on casa dega
And the moon pulls the tide and the tide brings night
But night is more than just a night in casa dega
Oh baby now I think Im starting to believe the things that Ive heard
Cause tonight in casa dega I hang on every word
That she said to me as she holds my hand
And reads the lines of a stranger
Yeah and she knows my name yeah she knows my plan
In the past in the present and for the future
Oh honey now I think Im starting to believe the things that Ive heard
Cause tonight in casa dega I hang on every word
That she said...
Baby fools pay the price of a whisper in the night in casa dega
Time rolls by, night is only night, can I save you?
Yeah more than just a night...

Man Gave Names To All The Animals

Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, in the beginning.
Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, long time ago.
He saw an animal that liked to growl,
Big furry paws and he liked to howl,
Great big furry back and furry hair.
Ah, think Ill call it a bear.
Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, in the beginning.
Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, long time ago.
He saw an animal up on a hill
Chewing up so much grass until she was filled.
He saw milk comin out but he didnt know how.
Ah, think Ill call it a cow.
Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, in the beginning.
Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, long time ago.
He saw an animal that liked to snort,
Horns on his head and they werent too short.
It looked like there wasnt nothin that he couldnt pull.
Ah, think Ill call it a bull.
Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, in the beginning.
Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, long time ago.
He saw an animal leavin a muddy trail,
Real dirty face and a curly tail.
He wasnt too small and he wasnt too big.
Ah, think Ill call it a pig.
Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, in the beginning.
Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, long time ago.
Next animal that he did meet
Had wool on his back and hooves on his feet,
Eating grass on a mountainside so steep.
Ah, think Ill call it a sheep.
Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, in the beginning.
Man gave names to all the animals
In the beginning, long time ago.
He saw an animal as smooth as glass
Slithering his way through the grass.
Saw him disappear by a tree near a lake . . .

The Boa

The boa is a darling snake,
I find him in North Africa as a lake.
I find him in Australia to spend an arrow.
He is the concise constrictor,
Feeling hind limbs is busy of payment.
Their young are ignorant of youth,
Youth is a barrier to crawl under
To constrict, to allow heavenly favours
To the seeds and deeds.
He is a South American anaconda.

Kool-Aid

I was sitting all by myself just thinking
And as I lye awake in bed
I can't forget about what you said
Tell myself hey man you should know better
You've got to act like nothings wrong
And you've got to stand up and be strong
Don't blame me for butting in
(Don't blame me for butting in)
These F'in walls are closing in
(These F'in walls are closing in)
And if everything does not seem cool
(Everything does not seem cool)
It's cause I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do
But everything's fine
And I don't know why I do this to myself
I've got this thing for losing my mind
I wish I could tell you all the things I want to say
Somehow I think I will this time
I don't suppose I feel like we are sinking
It's not as bad as yesterday
And you can make everything OK
If you start to feel like we are nowhere
I'll have my memories of you
And you can think about me too
Don't blame me for butting in
(Don't blame me for butting in)
These F'in walls are closing in
(These F'in walls are closing in)
And if everything does not seem cool
(Everything does not seem cool)
Not sure what I'm supposed to do
But everything's fine
And I don't know why I do this to myself
I've got this thing for losing my mind
I wish I could tell you all the things I want to say yea
So now I think I will this time
And everything's fine
And I don't know why I do this to myself
I've got this thing for losing my mind
I wish I could tell you all the things I want to say
So now I think I will this time
And everything's fine
And I don't know why I do this to myself
I've got this

Silence Is...

Silence is an absence
Silence is profound
Silence is a conversation
Being had without sound
Silence is an expression
One that cannot be heard
Silence cannot be spoken
Although it is a word
Silence is a presence
Of great nothingness
Silence can be something
And yet cease to exist
Silence can fill a room
And have no mass at all
Silence cannot be dropped, yet it can fall
Silence is a mystery
That will forever go unsolved
Silence is how every sound can swiftly be dissolved
Silence is the sound of rest
The only sound that can sound best
While other sounds can cause great pain
Silence is not the sound to blame
For Silence is what silence is
Something that is nothing
Nothing that exists

Little Village

(Van Morrison)
Little village baby, ain't large enough to be a town
From a little village baby, ain't large enough to be a town
Gotta get away from the city
It's gonna bring you down
Heard the voice of the silence, in the evening
In the long cool summer nights
Heard the voice of the silence, in the evening
In the long cool summer nights
Telling me not to worry
Everything's gonna be all right
There's only two kinds of truth
Baby let's get it straight from the start
There's only two kinds of truth
Let's get it straight from the start
It's all what you believe
Baby in your head and your heart
Heard the bells ringing
Voices singing soft and low
Heard the bells ringing
Voices are singing soft and low
Way up in the mountain, little village in the snow
Raining in the forest
Just enough to magnetise the leaves
Raining in the forest
Just enough to magnetise the leaves
We'll go walking baby with the moonlight shining down through the trees
Little village, way up on the mountainside
Little village baby, way up on the mountainside
Way across the ocean with you by my side

a Poem Of Silence

Silence is a beautiful thing.
no other sound is as great as silence.

Silence is the sound of nothing,
but it is still a sound.
even if a sound is great and amazing,
nothing can top the blissfulness of silence.

not the sound of wind on grass,
not the sound of laughter,
nothing is as beautiful as silence.

silence is a sound, but it is so much
better than any other sound.
What created such a far-off winner?

I love silence, silence is the best.
Never there will be a time that there
will be
a greater sound
than silence.

Darkness

Blue come over
Born a joneser
And the cops roll out the radar
And shoot devious grins
Another day begins
I want someone to know me
Maybe tell me who I am
Cause Ive faced down my demons
And cried out to a god
A God Ive never seen
Lights
And the world darkens around me
Strange friends all surround me
New ideas in my head start to burn
Dropped out of schools cause of things I never learned
And the world darkens around me
World darkens around me
I want you to love me
Like you did before you knew me
And I never thought thered be any help
For somebody like me
A vacancy
Sing
And the world darkens around me
Strange friends all surround me
New ideas in my head start to burn
Trust no one is the one thing that I learned
And the world darkens around me
World darkens around me
Bring me the sun
Slide off the moon
Yeah you better get home soon
Slide off the moon

Tarzan (A Song)

Deep in the jungle you can hear a yell
Over in the jungle an air plane fell
All the apes came gathered around
To come see this thing that fell to the ground

All inside, none survived
Until the apes heard an infant cry
Aug aug ooga no child for mama Toga
A child for you it fell from the blue

Now the apes they took it home
Mama ape Toga raised it on her own
It grew up, it didn’t take long
Now swinging from the trees it big and strong

Aug aug ooga no child for mama Toga
A child for you it fell from the blue

Some they say, call him Tarzan
Some say half ape, some say half man
Swinging tree to tree not wearing any briefs
Some they say a white chimpanzee

Aug aug ooga no child for mama Toga
A child for you it fell from the blue

Now deep in the jungle and I’ve heard it well
Not to far from where that air plane fell
Some they tried to hunt him but didn’t live to tell
He is the king of the jungle you can hear his yell

All inside, none survived
Until the apes heard an infant cry
Aug aug ooga no child for mama Toga
A child for you it fell from the blue.
