Ants in the pants

The colony of ants who (which?)
were happy up until recently
eating away at the gatepost
have braved it up the path to
the doorstep where
the four a.m. milkman deposits
the milk and bottled juice; it must have been
an exciting discovery, the bottles all dewy, cool,
in the early mist of dawn and
a promising ring of sweet liquid
just below the aluminium caps of some

so as I pick up the bottles, bleary-eyed,
some bold mountaineers
hitch a hike to foreign lands
which they regret. The first one such
finished up on the steel sink-top –
a pathetic sight out of Kafka or Orwell,
the worker out of work scurrying
more and more hysterically,
up and down in search of company, of work,
disorientated, frantic; I brushed him,
her, or it, onto the floor in the vague belief
that ants and floors had more in common and
could sort it out between them.

The second put a cap on schoolboy jokes,
making its presence known just as
I lowered my pants upon the toilet seat…
black trousers at that – I was as frantic
in my antics, as that first ant on the draining-board.
Perhaps some kind of retribution.

The third turned up on my arm, as I sat like this
at the computer..this time I was in care-for-all-things mood
and hoped to tray it on a piece of paper
back to its team – it wasn’t having any,
skedaddled, almost jumped I’ll swear,
off to this foreign floor that is not ever antland..

Maybe it was the same one which just now
turned up on my arm again here, three times
resisting brushing off until I, ungraciously, succeeded. And then
I felt guilty, repentant,

An old man on creaky knees,
searching in the poorest light
on a dark gray carpet
for a small, reddish-brown ant.

My sacred ant

The milk bottles were resting amidst geraniums
on the doorstep this morning,
to be picked up with half-open eyes

but then, put down in the alien land
of steel sink’s draining board,
two ants caught in their morning explorations
who had inadvertently hitched a ride, jumped off;
and now, bade fair to steal my heart;

two chaps who lived to work,
they presented the soul of agitation –
backwards and forwards on the steel sink they scurried,
seeking orientation, seeking to continue their allotted work
in an alien land where the sun
had spun a cartwheel in the sky

how to return such swift and now so agile movers
to their colony which lurks around the wooden gatepost
as if around some benevolent totem,
giving itself to its devotees, to be eaten totally away?

I took a sheet of A4 paper, trapped the one
against the steel; the other refused to join its fellow;
both evidently suspicious of my kind.

I started back to the front door with my precious cargo
which was becoming more precious by the second;
but in its agitation, it dropped off, to find
some path to life’s purpose on the floor;

I with some indefinable sin
to expiate on behalf of mankind
which cares more for large things than for small

Worker Ants

Worker Ants

Parallel along the path I followed an ant track.
I joined the ants, there were many all carrying
bits of straw so I picked up a piece of dry straw,
and man was it heavy. The other ants laughed
said will get the hang of it in time, soon you’ll
be able to carry two. Maybe four too, I rashly
said. No, that will break your back.

I kept falling behind as I timidly scanned the air
for predatory sparrows and wondered if rabbits
eat ants. Where their track ends by a hole, their
home, I threw my burden to the ground and
jumped back on to my own path. Hard work kills
the soul, and all you get at the end of it is cheap
pocket watch.

Of Ants and Life

…guess me correct
of ants and life they connect
causing a traffic jam on their trails I cannot forget
of ants as they swam from tree barks to get
a source of existence cannot let
the ants in drought to starve
for food is what they have once collected
and stored;
that which none has never rejected
nor objected
of ants and life

the futuristic species
that know when to pick up the pieces
of anything,
and the guard ants making sure nothing misses
from whence it were piled and stored
of ants and life ‘am never bored
as I observed how they nod
in respect and honor on board
as they pass each other a hustle they accord

of ants and life as they seek to conform
to a life in all its form

if ants can manage their own
why can’t we not of our own?

Gratitude dawning

Alarm clock. The sun rises.
The buses, railways, flights are running.
There’s a bottle of milk on the doorstep.

Facts of life. Except when they’re not there.
Who lives a life of continual gratitude for life?
Hey guys, the sun which disappeared last night
has turned up again today! Wow! Relief! Let’s get down
on our knees, raise hands, voices… and
while we’re about it, put your hands together for
all morning milkmen, where they still deliver milk…

Except – no milk this morning.
Shall you telephone – politely,
with a subtext of unpractised gratitude?

I only saw the current milkman once;
said to him, this is the first time I met you…
he said, well, you’re not around at 4 ay em are you?

So you telephone. A foreignish voice from
the land of holy cows replies from
a script I guess, …your previous milkman…
left the company… late…on his way…

Morning gratitude. The cow who gives you
the love for her calves, in liquid form;
yielding too, the butter for your toast;
the pig who gave her life for your bacon rasher;
the hen who parted with her offspring for you
to kill its life in sizzling frying pan…
they’re all female, you’ve just noticed; how about
the oranges whose liquid praise of the morning sun you drink?
tomatoes, mushrooms, anybody?

maybe you should write a note to the dairy,
say, please convey to the milkman
who has now left the company for
pastures new, hur hur, and we hope
a creamy, frothing future,
our gratitude for services rendered
which we would not ourselves
be easily persuaded to take on…
yes, maybe you should.

Man Or Machine

Auto, bus, walking and sweating dermis,
somehow on time I reach my office.

work needs to be finished on time so I sit infront of computer.

breakfast time, toast, butter and tea glass,
hurriedly I eat, unaware it may appear boorish and crass.

work needs to be finished on time so I sit infront of computer.

lunch time, dosa containing rice, dal and yeast,
the way I eat can put to shame any wild beast.

work needs to be finished on time so I sit infront of computer.

till evening, I am tired, drowsy and dozy
but I skip the plan to go outside to have some tea.

work needs to be finished on time so I sit infront of computer.

My head aches, my eye burns
but I continue work amidst yawns.

work needs to be finished on time so I sit infront of computer.

Just before logout, I work with great pace,
with time I contest, compete and race.

work needs to be finished on time so a computer sits infront of computer.

Warrior Red-Ants

I crushed some warrior-ants to death,
And wondered what, others would do;
And very promptly, came more ants
To investigate scene of crime!

These ants build nests upon the trees,
By gluing leaves with strange substance;
Their nests look like army barracks,
With sentry-ants guarding smartly!

The dead ants lay all strewn about;
A few of them were moving still;
And very soon, they too lay dead,
Like soldiers killed in battle-field!

The scout ants went from ant to ant,
Perhaps in search of ones alive;
Some went back fast to convey news
About the tragedy they saw!

And very soon, arrived more ants
To check if dead were truly dead;
Somehow, these ants smelt death itself;
They did it so effortlessly!

Each one of them lifted the dead,
By proboscis and sped back home;
Each ant with carcass upon mouth,
Ran back as fast as legs carried.

And in a trice, the dead were cleared;
The scene of crime was clean by now;
The work was finished in moments;
Yes, ants are truly busiest!

Oh, what respect ants show their dead!
How fast they rescue comrades hurt!
They proved they respected their dead;
Do human beings do like-wise?

No Beer, No Work

The shades of night was fallin’ slow
As through New York a guy did go
And nail on ev’ry barroom door
A card that this here motter bore:
'No beer, no work.'

His brow was sad, his mouth was dry;
It was the first day of July,
And where, all parched and scorched it hung,
These words was stenciled on his tongue:
'No beer, no work.'

'Oh, stay,' the maiden said, 'and sup
This malted milk from this here cup.'
A shudder passed through that there guy,
But with a moan he made reply:
'No beer, no work.'

At break of day, as through the town
The milkman put milk bottles down,
Onto one stoop a sort of snore
Was heard, and then was heard no more—
'No beer, no work.'

The poor old guy plumb dead was found
And planted in the buryin’ ground,
Still graspin’ in his hand of ice
Them placards with this sad device:
'No beer, no work.'

Hitch Hike

I'm going to Chicago that's the last place my baby stayed
I'm packing up my bags I'm gonna leave this town right away
I'm gonna find that girl if I have to hitch hike around the world

"Chicago City" that's what the sign on the freeway read
I'm gonna keep on going 'til I get to that street's called 6th and Main
I've gotta find that girl if i have to hitch hike around the world

C'mon hitch hike
Hitch hike children
Hitch hike
Hitch hike baby
Hitch hike
Hitch hike baby
C'mon hitch hike
Hitch hike darling

The Hook Up

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oooh.......
He was lookin' said he wanna hook up
But she don't wanna hook up
Told him, just go (Go!)
And now she lookin' said she wanna hook up
He really wanna hook up
Told her, let's go (Go!)
Baby, I can't believe everything
Your body make me wanna do,
From the way that you move on the floor,
Now I think I'm in love with you
Grab my waist
Wanna get with the rhythm of the move ya' do, do
Switch my hips on the floor,
do it slow, to keep up with you
Back it up now
Bump your rump now
Grab my waist now
Work it out now
Grab my shoulder
Pick it up now
Take it lower
To the floor now
Watch out, baby
I'm a drop a little somethin'
Ride it, baby
We can do a little somethin'
And check out baby
When I do a little somethin
You know, baby
Let's hook up a little somethin'
Baby, I can't believe everything
That I feel when I dance with you
From the small of my back to the breath on my neck
To the move you do
Put your body
Gotta get my body up right next to you
Move the party
Gotta rock the party until they're over you
Back it up now
Bump your rump now
Grab my waist now
Work up now
Grab my shoulder
Pick it up now
Take it lower
To the floor (x2)
Boy, I can't explain
What you do to me
My whole world has changed
Im living a fantasy
Tonight, I'm in the mood
Please take me by your hand
I wanna get in your groove
oh, baby, take me there
The bodies are shakin
Wanna get my body, keep shakin
Better get your butt out here baby
Cmon lets go...
So do how you do it
Drop it down, bend over, get to it
Make it pop back down to the ground
Pick it up, let's go... (x2)
Don't stop
Just get, get on the floor
Butt drops
Hips pop, poppin' for sure
Who's got, got it
Get it some more
One time, two times, three times we go
Back it up now
Bump your rump now
Grab my waist now
Work it up now
Grab my shoulder
Pick it up now
Take it lower
To the floor
Back it up now
Bump your rump now
Grab my waist now
Work it up now
Grab my shoulder
Pick it up now
Take it lower
To the floor
Watch out, baby
I'm a drop a little somethin'
Ride it, baby
We can do a little somethin'
And check out baby
When I get a little somethin
You know, baby
Let's hook up a little somethin'
Back it up now
bump your rump now
Grab my waist now
Work it up now

I couldnt sleep at all last night
Just a-thinkin bout you
Baby, things werent right
cause I was
Tossin and turnin, turnin and tossin
Tossin and turnin, tossin and turnin all night
I kicked the blankets on the floor
Turned my pillow upside down
I never felt this way before
cause I was
Tossin and turnin, turnin and tossin
Tossin and turnin, tossin and turnin all night
Jumped out of bed, turned on the lights
Pulled down the shade, went to the kitchen for a bite
Rolled up the shade, turned down the lights
I jumped back in the bed, was the middle of the night
The clock downstairs was strikin three
Couldnt get you off my mind
I heard the milkman on the street
cause I was
Tossin and turnin, turnin and tossin
Tossin and turnin, tossin and turnin all night
Jumped out of bed, turned on the lights
Pulled down the shade, went to the kitchen for a bite
Rolled up the shade, turned down the lights
Jumped back in the bed, was the middle of the night

Out Of Work

8 a.m. Im up and my feet beating on the sidewalk
Down at the unemployment agency, all I get is talk
I check the want ads but there just aint nobody hiring
Whats a man supposed to do when hes down and hes
Out of work
I need a job, Im out of work
Im unemployed, Im out of work
I need a job, Im out of work
I go to pick my girl up
Her name is linda brown
Her dad invites me in
He tells me to sit down
The small talk that were making
Is going pretty smooth
But then he drops a bomb
Son, what dya do ?
Im out of work
I need a job, Im out of work
Im unemployed, Im out of work
I need a job, Im out of work
Hey mr president I know you got your plans
Youre doing all you can now to aid the little man
We got to do our best to whip that inflation down
Maybe you got a job for me just driving you around
Im out of work
These hard times, theyre enough
To make a man lose his mind
Im out of work
Up there you got a job but down here below
Im out of work
I need a job, Im out of work
Im unemployed, Im out of work
I need a job, Im out of work
Im out of work
Im out of work
Im out of work
Im out of work

The City Of London

Introduction:

I wrote this in the middle of the night, many years ago.
My mind went back to when I was a little girl
and my brother and I went to visit my Grandfather.
We stopped that day to walk through the City, there was a mist that morning and a fine rain, the sort that makes your hair frizz.
The tranquillity of the early morning streets was rudely broken
by people coming into the City to work and so here is my memory:

----

Early morning after a thunderous night
I can breathe easy.
If I'm quiet I may hear the sound of birdsong.
Sometimes there is a mist.
It hangs over London like a veil.
Soon dawn's empty streets
will heave with massing crowds.
but until then all London is at peace.

The gentle tinkling of milk bottles
breaks the quiet
and the smell of bacon and fried bread
waft through the chill morning air.
Sounds of sirens fill my head and
concrete rises heavenward, filling my eyes,
crushing their foundations through my soul.
A sickness seeps through me,
everything beautiful is gone.

'Morning paper, read all about it! '
Girls hurry buy in tight blue jeans,
men in suits, some in Mac's,
high-heeled ladies, clicky, click, clack.
Poor old tramp, fingernails black,
stirs on the floor beside a closed door,
‘Got the price of a cuppa luv', he calls.
The girl quickens her pace.
A couple kiss in tender bliss
A young man sighs, a baby cries,
an old lady dies on the streets of London.

Early morning after a thunderous night
you can breathe easy.
You may hear the sound of birdsong
Sometimes there is a mist.
It hangs over London like a veil

Layover

Making love in the sun, in the morning sun
in a hotel room
above the alley
where poor men poke for bottles;
making love in the sun
making love by a carpet redder than our blood,
making love while the boys sell headlines
and Cadillacs,
making love by a photograph of Paris
and an open pack of Chesterfields,
making love while other men- poor folks-
work.
That moment- to this. . .
may be years in the way they measure,
but it's only one sentence back in my mind-
there are so many days
when living stops and pulls up and sits
and waits like a train on the rails.
I pass the hotel at 8
and at 5; there are cats in the alleys
and bottles and bums,
and I look up at the window and think,
I no longer know where you are,
and I walk on and wonder where
the living goes
when it stops.

Inside A Crowded Room

inside a crowded room
are litters
waste papers, mongol pencils
on the floor,
crumpled sheets of bond paper
paper glasses, and used plastic spoons
a chicken bone
dried catchup and
morsels of bread that the ants
start to take away

light has entered the slits
of the walls
this early morning
it is humid and dark
and i am bringing this white
porcelain vase
put it some water
not filling it to the brim

i have this red rose
that i pick from the garden
i put it there
i open the window

what is it? my friend
i let delight enter the crowded room
and i want it to stay there for a while.

Wild Nights

Nights Fueled by the jungle temperament of the all night drum,
and our furtive flask of liquid music.
laughter overflowing
from the moist, wry lips
of sexy glasses, and
the rogue brims of
dancing bottles,
our communal table flooded
with red waves of convivial juice!
No one bother keeping count
of the Marlboros.
Sit down,
No need to fetch us
any shot glasses.
Feel free to chainsmoke and
slug-straight-shots from the bottle.
Jack's whiskey waxing our whimsey,
As we polish the fifth,
alcohol mingling with
cool blue night and
warm red blood,
Sitting across from each other,
twisted grimaces and howling guffaws,
making our silly grotesque faces,
In turn we crack jokes,
wince and hysterically snap.

Cat in bed (real expirience)

It was vaccation time and
I was very happy.
I played all day picking,
dolls on their noses and throwing them
Just like a strong man.
And the computer
it got the fever and I got the scoldings!
My parents send me early to bed.
Just when it was 8
I resisted the most to my parents
But then lost resisting to them
I went to bed with a long face
Determined not to sleep,
My brother looked me with a sly smile
My parents switched off the light
And said good night.
It was dark in the room and I
Saw a dark figure having looks of a cat
Just beside me on.
My very own bed
I was puzzled as
there was no cat in the house
And when I touched it,
Oh! It felt like fur,
Coward me screamed like anything
And my parents came rushing along,
And they put on the lights and I saw
Lying beside me on my bed
Was a cat-like doll
And there was my brother on the floor
Purring just like a cat!

Sickness

THE toughest carcass in the town
Fell sick at last and took to bed,
And on that bed God waited him
With cool, cool hands for his frantic head,
And while the fever did its dance
They talked, and a good thing was said:
'See, I am not that Scriptural!
A lesser, kinder God instead.'

Fever must run its course, and God
Could not do much for the countryman.
At least he saved him certain dreams:
'I die! O save me if you can,
I am a bruised, a beaten slave,
I march in a blistering caravan,
They dash a stone upon my head--
Ah no, but that is God's white hand.'

God plucked him back, and plucked him back,
And did his best to smoothe the pain.
The sick man said it was good to know
That God was true, if prayer was vain.

'O God, I weary of this night,
When will you bring the dawn again?'
The night must run its course, but God
Was weary too with watching-strain.

A cluck of tuneless silly birds,
A guilty gray, and it was dawn.
The sick man thumped across the floor
And slid the curtain that was drawn:
'O pale wet dawn! O let it shine
Lustrous and gold on the good green lawn!
The lustre, Lord!' Alas, God knows
When sad conclusions are foregone.

The sick man leant upon his Lord,
On that imperfect break of day,
'Now, Lord, I die: is there no word,
No countervail that God can say?'
No word. But tight upon his arm,
Was God, and drew not once away
Until his punctual destiny.
To whom could God repair to pray?

Now God be thanked by dying men
Who comrades them in times like these,
Who dreads to see the doom come down
On these black midnight canopies
And on this poisonous glare of dawns.
The whole world crumples in disease,
But God is pitying to the end,
And gives an office to my knees.

About Last Night.....

i finally went to bed at
1: 30 a.m. and when i undress myself
as i usually do,
when i turned off the light
you turned it on
in a little while you while naked
went up bed
and walked towards the door
opened it and then closed it again
as though darkness
when the lights were turned off again
was a big mouth
eating the whole of your naked body
and then
gone

i wished i were asleep.
but it wasn't
because the following morning
the whole room was as silent as
clothes on the floor
without a body.

On Automanic

On automanic!
People in a panic.
Looking for a switch...
That stops the twitching,
And the itch.

We're standing frantic,
In the midst of antics...
Trying to find,
Reality
Somewhere in our minds!

On automanic!
People in a panic.
Looking for a switch...
That stops the twitching,
And the itch.

We're standing frantic,
In the midst of antics...
Hoping in time,
Darkness
Doesn't leave us blind!

It seems we have been,
Too busy being dizzy.
Taking the wrong medication!
We've come to deadends,
Thinking turning back was easy.
But we hid inside...
Behind lies,
That fight us!

We market...
Rascism!
We market...
Disrespect and fast rejection!
We market...
Fear!
We market...
Peace to tease in pieces!

Trying to find...
A few kind reminders!

On automanic!
Psychomanic panic.
Looking for a fix and quick!
To stop this mental fit that's sick!

We're standing frantic!
In the midst of antics...
Trying to find,
Someone who hasn't lost their mind!

On automanic!
People in a panic.
Looking for a switch...
That stops the twitching,
And the itch!

We're standing frantic,
In the midst of antics...
Hoping in time,
Darkness
Doesn't leave us blind!
